It's just...not a zamboni.

[–]Stefunni[S] 21 points22 points ago

I know - they had shovels and snowblowers... I was like.. don't they have some sort of big ass zamboni type thing to do this?

[–]hangers_on 47 points48 points ago

You mean like a snow plow...

[–]sleepybrown84 35 points36 points ago

Call Mr. Plow, that's my name. That name again is Mr. Plow

[–]matty323 17 points18 points ago

Senor plow no es macho, es solamente un borracho.

[–]xiic 6 points7 points ago

I would think that a snowplow would damage the field. But I could be wrong.

[–]hangers_on 3 points4 points ago

Oh, of course.

It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. Zamboni-sized shovel/snowblower = snow plow. :)

[–]angrystoic 1 point2 points ago

I don't wanna be that guy, but a Zamboni-sized snowblower would not be a snow plow...

[–]hangers_on 3 points4 points ago

Well you are that guy. Obviously a shovel and snowblower are not identical devices but they can perform the same function. ie. remove snow from a particular surface.

A snow plow is simply a "zamboni-sized" snow removal apparatus.

[–]north97 2 points3 points ago

That's kinda like saying an airplane and a car are the same because they both transport people from one place to another.

Nothing against your original comment, just pointing out flimsy reasoning.

[–]Inferno 1 point2 points ago

A snow plow is simply a "zamboni-sized" snow removal apparatus.

It's a "zamboni-sized" shovel.

[–]hafetysazard 6 points7 points ago

They only need to clear the yard lines. It snowed pretty badly before one of my high school games, so they cleared just the yard lines. It caused the surface to freeze pretty quickly, so every yard would be a line of ice across the field to slip on. It was quite hilarious.

[–]somecleverusername62 -5 points-4 points ago

why the hell would they need to resurface ice on a football field? do you even know what a zamboni is?

[–]LTxDuke 1 point2 points ago

whooosh

[–]MrMo0o 47 points48 points ago

That was a great game too. Gotta love when cold beer keeps you warm.

[–]M12Domino 24 points25 points ago

Truly a Canadian thing to say.

[–]mmss 22 points23 points ago

You know you're Canadian when you've played baseball in the snow.

[–]Helmer86 16 points17 points ago

+1 for snow pitch

[–]jhra 1 point2 points ago

Played a league game of Softball in the snow this year. Took a one hopper to the thigh at the pitchers pad and that shit hurt like hell.

[–]mmss 1 point2 points ago

I took a grounder just behind second base that hit the edge of the turf and bounced straight into my nose; I was lucky it didn't break it, like the poor girl standing at home plate when a fielder uncorked a wicked relay trying to catch a runner scoring, instead catching her directly in the face.

[–]aspartam 5 points6 points ago

I once saw a girl's nose unhinge at one side when she got hit laterally by a softball. Years later, a girl was sitting next to me in school and I noticed she had a scar running down the side crease of her nose. Turns out it was her and she didn't like to talk about it...

[–]jhra 1 point2 points ago

Softball makes me bleed. I pitch and I'm not afraid of sliding so I usually limp away from the diamond.

[–]JJTropea 31 points32 points ago

I get great pleasure in my province not looking like this (yet).

Sincerely,

Manitoba

[–]Infrarad 40 points41 points ago

Something something weather.

Sincerely,

Vancouver

[–]Alaunocara 17 points18 points ago

Rain?

[–]mtled 5 points6 points ago

Agreed.

Regards, Québec

[–]DontPokeThatPlease 4 points5 points ago

Hi Manitoba, I'm moving there in 5 weeks. I was wondering if you fancied having an abnormally warm winter this year?

[–]JJTropea 1 point2 points ago

Last winter was actually not too bad at all, minimal snow and fairly mild temperatures (compared to the usual -50 for weeks on end).

As long as it continues that trend for this year I will be a happy camper. Just curious, where are you coming from?

[–]DontPokeThatPlease 0 points1 point ago

I'm a Brit, moving over to Winnipeg which I have been told has beautiful hot sunny beaches, palm trees and a disappointing road network!

[–]JJTropea 1 point2 points ago

You have been terribly misinformed! Turn around while you can! Oh, except for the disappointing road network, we live up to that in full.

Edit: Okay fine, I guess on a good day we do have a few hot sunny beaches here and there.

[–]DontPokeThatPlease 0 points1 point ago

Haha I'm luckily not completely oblivious to your wondrously wintery weather! I'm moving there to be with my girlfriend so I'm quite happy to put up with a blizzard or two :)

(I will be having words with her about the lack of palm trees though!)

[–]JJTropea 1 point2 points ago

Well that's good, at least you are mentally prepared. You will definitely be in store for a few blizzards.

Haha she must have just mistaken our lovely spruce tree's for palms, after all they are oh-so similar.

[–]DontPokeThatPlease 0 points1 point ago

In fairness I do suspect a trap, but it's too late to turn back now - I've already bought thermal underwear!

[–]JJTropea 0 points1 point ago

Well shit, now you're officially committed.

[–]GarMc 8 points9 points ago

Are you aware there is a northern Manitoba?

[–]pegasister1557 10 points11 points ago

im in the northen part... still no snow

[–]bobintime 1 point2 points ago

This, plus we've had 6 inches of snow in southeast Manitoba already. It's gone now of course, that was a couple of weeks ago.

[–]Norse_of_60 6 points7 points ago

I gave your mom 6 inches last night.

[–]bobintime 8 points9 points ago

She's been dead for 35 years.

Edit: You're proud of 6 inches?

[–]jackster999 8 points9 points ago

Well it is above average...

[–]Norse_of_60 3 points4 points ago

6 inches wide.

[–]Fedcom 0 points1 point ago

Probably more proud of the whole "he fucked your mom" thing

[–]Dancingtoes16 2 points3 points ago

It was 16 degrees in Newfoundland today. As a former AB resident, I am liking this as well.

[–]ILOVECAT 1 point2 points ago

FTFY - As a former Fort McMurray resident, I am liking this as well.

[–]Gyrant 1 point2 points ago

Enjoy it while it lasts. Whether systems only move in one direction in this part of the country.

East.

[–]ThatCanuck 31 points32 points ago

I'd recognize McMahon Stadium anywhere.

[–]joetromboni 5 points6 points ago

I'm surprised it has been called McMahon stadium for ...what 30 years or more???

Seems like all the stadiums get sponsored and change the name. Wonder why McMahon has never done this?

[–]platypus_bear 5 points6 points ago

Probably has something to do with the University.

I'm not 100% sure if the University owns the land or the stadium or both but iirc the university has a lot to do with it

[–]BCTripster 1 point2 points ago

Likely the reason, they still own/operate it.

[–]Vinzafy 0 points1 point ago

I park there for school and the passes are issued by the U of C, so there definitely is a strong link between the two.

[–]tooblu 1 point2 points ago

The stadium is owned by the University of Calgary and operated by the McMahon Stadium Society.

[–]ThatCanuck 3 points4 points ago

I hate to say it but it's not the best looking stadium....they're probably hard pressed to find someone willing to put their company name on it. Didn't the Saddledome only get changed a few years ago? Same with Lindsay Park?

[–]xiic 2 points3 points ago

Hell, the skydome was still the skydome in '05.

[–]hangers_on 8 points9 points ago

It's still the Skydome.

Fuck Rogers. Any normal citizen* who refers to it as anything but the Skydome should be summarily punched in the face. We musn't let Rogers win.

*I understand the obligations of Sportsnet announcers

[–]superbad 8 points9 points ago

Ahem, SkyDome. Without the "the", and with a big D, unlike the Argos.

[–]Eso 0 points1 point ago

Burn! I love it.

Edit: Lions fan here, but on the topic of SkyDome, also a Jays fan.

[–]ojoil 2 points3 points ago

Saddledome changed a couple years back, to the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Talisman Centre has been that way for close to 10 years, AFAIK.

[–]BCTripster 3 points4 points ago

It as Pengrowth Saddledome before that. Too bad it didn't remain Olympic Saddledome though :-(

[–]ohfuddleduddle 2 points3 points ago

And a long time before that it was the Canadian Airlines Saddledome. Remember the hubub about them writing Canadian Airlines on the roof?

[–]joetromboni 0 points1 point ago

It's a much better looking stadium than the riders play in...they got a sponsor - Mosaic. But none of the CFL stadiums compare to NFL, that's for sure.

[–]WNJohnnyM 0 points1 point ago

And then there's the fiasco in Winnipeg this year. New stadium. No. Old stadium. No wait, we can play in the new one later in the year. No way. Maybe. No. Next year, we play in the new stadium: Investors Group Field. Bleh.

[–]acid_jazz 0 points1 point ago

Your new stadium has to be in the worst location possible. One road going in, one road going out. Going to be a clusterfuck after the game.

[–]ramblerj 1 point2 points ago

Was going to say, I was 99% sure this was McMahon. Only been to one game and it was last season. Got shit faced drunk and had a great time.

[–]djbriandamage 1 point2 points ago

I saw the opening ceremonies of the 88 Olympics there! Some Stampeders games too.

[–]ThatCanuck 1 point2 points ago

For fun I youtubed the '88 Olympic Opening Ceremonies after seeing London's this year, you know, just to see how far we've come. Yah...we had a float on the back of a truck with a Dinosaur on it! Sweeeeeet.

[–]djbriandamage 0 points1 point ago

I think Calgary spent its whole budget on having the Snowbirds fly overhead in F14s.

[–]ThatCanuck 1 point2 points ago

Money well spent, I'd say.

[–]Norse_of_60 -1 points0 points ago

You are correct sir. Heyyyyyyooooo.

[–]Reeonimus 27 points28 points ago

I was at this game! I can see myself in the pic too! We brought a blanket to sit on, a blanket to cover our legs and the ladies also each had a snuggie. Oh and the quart of spiced rum we smuggled in helped as well.

[–]tanstone 10 points11 points ago

sailing with jerry

[–]creamteam17 7 points8 points ago

It was my hockey team who was clearing the snow off every five yards! It was actually pretty hard. I was unfortunately just out of the picture behind the band when it happened

[–]CatSplat 2 points3 points ago

I was there as well! Great game to watch as long as you dressed for the weather.

[–]grant0 9 points10 points ago

Just want to say that I adore that we have over 80K subscribers in /r/canada and over 34M people in Canada and yet when someone posts a photo of a football game in Calgary, no less than four people chime in to say they were there.

[–]DontPokeThatPlease 3 points4 points ago

In fairness i'm neither a Canadian nor currently living in Canada but I subscribe to this subreddit just to learn the secrets of how you all stay warm!

[–]Eso 2 points3 points ago

Good wool clothing, keeping active, and a steady supply of booze.

[–]DontPokeThatPlease 2 points3 points ago

Now you have told me the secret, what's to stop me now stealing all the maple syrup and coffee crunch?

[–]WNJohnnyM 1 point2 points ago

I can say, unequivocally, that I was not at that game.

[–]Nutwagon 1 point2 points ago

I'm still waiting for hockey

[–]gfpd 1 point2 points ago

Wow, I was in the section too! Also with some spiced...

SAY SORRY, FELLOW CANADIAN!

[–]antoinewalker8 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry, please forgive me. I live in New Brunswick, we will be blanketed soon enough.

[–]MouthR0t 7 points8 points ago

For a split second, I thought I was looking at a hockey rink.

[–]Norse_of_60 -5 points-4 points ago

Rink implies hockey. Don't say hockey rink.

[–]MouthR0t 2 points3 points ago

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/rink

Actually, it doesn't imply anything.

[–]maricc 2 points3 points ago

LACES OUT ANDY!

[–]maddecentparty 9 points10 points ago

GO STAMPS!

[–]Ricekrisper 8 points9 points ago

Fantuz is an under cover rider who wants to destroy the ticats from within. /r/Conspiracy spread the truth! And nicely played last game!

[–]rlrl 7 points8 points ago

Luca Congi, too!

[–]Ricekrisper 8 points9 points ago

My god you're right... THE 13TH MAN curse follows these two around like the plaque. Quarantine them; Luca COngi is a sleeper agent, did amazing all season and when Sasketchewan needed us to lose he became self aware! WAKE UP PEOPLE! COKE AND PEPSI ARE THE SAME THING!

EDIT: KEVIN GLENN = EX- HAMILTON PLAYER, he threw SO MANY PICKS THAT GAME, KEVIN GLENN = UNDER COVER TICAT!

EDIT2: BURRIS STILL WORKS FOR THE STAMPS!

EDIT3: COUBOURNE = EX MONTREAL PLAYER- Ok now I'll stop.

[–]M12Domino 1 point2 points ago

It really is the only plausible reasoning behind why he would leave.

[–]consumeradvocacy 3 points4 points ago

Where is it snowing already? Here in Southern Ontario it hasn't snowed yet at all.

[–]rainman_104 3 points4 points ago

Yes clearly southern ontario is the be-all-end-all of Canada right? Couldn't be Edmonton or Regina or Winnipeg; must be Hamilton right?

[–]consumeradvocacy 3 points4 points ago

I've never been out West, it's a different world out there. A much colder world I imagine.

[–]rainman_104 0 points1 point ago

No it's not that cold here in BC...

[–]consumeradvocacy 0 points1 point ago

I was referring to the Prairies, not BC.

[–]rainman_104 -1 points0 points ago

West is BC. Pairies are prairies. We don't measure everything from Toronto.

[–]consumeradvocacy 3 points4 points ago

You have to consider how far even Manitoba is from Toronto. Florida is closer.

[–]sequentious 5 points6 points ago

Looking at the ads, I couldn't help myself:

Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers. football football.

Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers Rogers ahh snow! oh snow. It's some snow.

[–]kennilicious 2 points3 points ago

Is this in Calgary? I heard they have a snowfall warning for today

[–]jimmy982 2 points3 points ago

Indeed. Supposed to be between 10-20cms overnight tonight. It hasn't started where I am, but its meant to get ugly!

[–]splagelouf 2 points3 points ago

that happens late in the nfl season all the time...

[–]RagingIce 2 points3 points ago

that's because the NFL season goes into february... Regular season CFL snow games are rare since the last game is at the end of october/beginning of november.

[–]DedRok 3 points4 points ago

I sat near where this photo was taken at the grey cup in 2009 when the Riders lost. The "13 man sign" that I always see when the incident is shown as a flashback is near that spot too...

[–]mtled -2 points-1 points ago

Good times, good times.

[–]platypus_bear 5 points6 points ago

I played a game on that field when I was in high school. That turf is really rough and painful

[–]superflyer 5 points6 points ago

How long ago was that? This is McMahon in Calgary and they replaced the field about 3-4 years ago I believe and it is awesome.

[–]platypus_bear 8 points9 points ago

It was about 6-7 years ago. I would hope they've changed things because the turf was terrible.

And I know it's McMahon since I did just say I played on it in high school. My school was the closest high school to it in the city and there was a pretty new and rich high school that wanted a game so they rented the stadium and since we were closest they asked us to play against them

[–]yunolisten 3 points4 points ago

I played city finals on McMahon twice for Bowness high school.

Lost once, won once.

[–]platypus_bear 5 points6 points ago

Bowness sucks.

I remember kicking their ass in basketball. Good times

[–]yunolisten 3 points4 points ago

Ya we were better at full contact sports.

Although I hear the football team hasn't won a championship since moving to a division 1 school, which should be almost 10 years ago now, so that is saddening. However I think a lot of that has to do with the kid that died in practice a few years ago and losing their head coach of like 30 years, the football program hasn't really had the same edge since.

Also.... FUCK BASKETBALL!

[–]platypus_bear 2 points3 points ago

Basketball is awesome.

I even got to go to provincials one year. Sucked that it was in Cardston tho. That place is sooo boring.

[–]Center60 2 points3 points ago

You got something against the Mormons? haha

[–]iggyman12 3 points4 points ago

I also played a game on that field in high school in November, granted it was approximately 8 years ago. When there is any sort of moisture on that field it becomes extremely slippery and the closest description I can give is the rough side of velcro, if you fall and slide on a part of your skin that isn't covered it is the worst road rash you could ask for.

Side note I was also at this game on Saturday and I am pretty sure McMahon stadium is the only place that it snowed, everywhere else in the city has like 1cm, McMahon seemed like it got 5 cm.

[–]Killericon 1 point2 points ago

I played on McMahon 7 years ago in the summer. Fucking blood all down my shins.

[–]jchecko 1 point2 points ago

This was probably on saturday

[–]yunolisten 0 points1 point ago

The new stuff is much better. Still astroturf though.

I can't place the exact year, sometime early 2000's but I played on that field pre and post astroturf upgrade. The original stuff was a god damn nightmare, your flesh would be oozing for days after a game from the turf burn. The new stuff causes some turf burn but is a significant improvement over the the 1970's style stuff they originally had.

Also the new stuff is suppose to help with impact injuries, when you fall on it it is taller and squishier so its more like falling on natural dirt and grass compared to falling on a slab on concrete with a half inch of basically carpet on it.

old stuff (pic) : [http://www.astroturfusa.com/AstroTurf-12.aspx]

new stuff (pic) : http://www.astroturfusa.com/GameDay-Grass.aspx

Go Stamps!

[–]Tothebillyoh 1 point2 points ago

There is plenty of room for you all down here in Australia, many places with temperatures that rarely fall below 70f or above 85f. Leave the skates at home but.

[–]rainman_104 4 points5 points ago

There is plenty of room for you all down here in Australia,

There's no CFL or decent Hockey in Australia...

[–]Tothebillyoh 1 point2 points ago

... and that's a bad thing? (Joking Joyce).

[–]Harbltron 3 points4 points ago

I'll keep my snow and ice thank you very much... nothing like bundling up, grabbing some friends and beers and riding a few snowmobiles out into the forest to start a fire on a frozen lake and stare at the stars.

Also, skiing/snowboarding.

[–]smokedfish 2 points3 points ago

Makes me wonder how Josh Bartel felt playing this game. Had he ever even seen snow before?

[–]graphictruth 2 points3 points ago

we like snow. It kills the giant spiders.

[–]hottestdayoftheyear 1 point2 points ago

depending on what latitude this was taken, i may have a witty retort.

[–]antonvowl 1 point2 points ago

Is that safe? I've played rugby before on frozen ground (70% of the pitch was in sunlight, my wing was in the shade) and it hurts like HELL getting tackled (obviously I mean more so than usual, which is only a moderate amount).

[–]rainman_104 3 points4 points ago

Safe? Considering kids grow up playing Football and Soccer outdoors in the winter in Canada, this is fine.

Sucks? Yes. But it's a way of life in Canada for Football or Soccer.

[–]antonvowl 0 points1 point ago

I'm just surprised, frozen ground would definitely get a football or a rugby match called off in england.

[–]rainman_104 0 points1 point ago

Dunno about nowadays, but growing up as a kid I played plenty of footy in the snow. It sucked yes, but it was character building for sure.

Some parts of the country it would be impossible to play soccer outdoors if we called every game on account of snow.

[–]ScousePie2 0 points1 point ago

I can only imagine how cold it was there.

This is the most we get in the UK, and that was pretty cold. http://wigan.rlfans.com/fusion_images/salfordaway2006.jpg

[–]WNJohnnyM 1 point2 points ago

It's Calgary in mid-October. I'm guessing the snow was gone a day later, courtesy of a chinook.

[–]Stefunni[S] 2 points3 points ago

Unfortunately... we only got more of it

[–]chandlerxbing -1 points0 points ago

GO STAMPS GO! EH!

[–]Hamm31337[!] 1 point2 points ago

Ugghh was that the Hamilton @ Calgary game, fuck that fumble on the field goal kick pissed me off

[–]yoyoupmy__BUTT -1 points0 points ago

oh, hello calgary! lol

[–]SDM19 -1 points0 points ago

That's a pretty light snowfall for these days OP

[–]bfj420 0 points1 point ago

Sorry

[–]Jumpin_Jack_Flash 0 points1 point ago

We're insane. But in a "no fucks given" kind of way.

[–]JustAPhlook 0 points1 point ago

I miss Calgary sometimes...

[–]MC-Master-Bedroom 0 points1 point ago

Stop laughing! The synchronized snowplow show is actually tremendously entertaining.

[–]BosskPlissken 0 points1 point ago

This makes me want to see football on skates.

[–]db_156 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I was at that game, got some pics too!

[–]BrutusHFX -1 points0 points ago

Pfft, I have no need for such a logical response.

[–]blueschooler 1 point2 points ago

Simply beautiful, I love winter in this country, wish it looked like this in Vancouver more often

[–]Stefunni[S] 5 points6 points ago

Its still Fall... Halloween hasn't even happened yet :@

[–]blueschooler 0 points1 point ago

That's true, makes it even more unbelievable

[–]music_user 3 points4 points ago

As an Ontarian I wish winter here looked more like it does in Vancouver....

That being said after spending a winter in Winnipeg it's a little hard to complain about winter down here.

[–]idspispopd 0 points1 point ago

I never knew anyone liked slush.

[–]WNJohnnyM 2 points3 points ago

Slush? I could use a Slurpee right now.

[–]SimplyQuid 1 point2 points ago

Ontarian? Ontarionan? Ontarionian?

[–]music_user 2 points3 points ago

I've only ever heard the first one.

British Colombian

Albertan

Manitoban

Ontarian

Quebecer

You follow?

[–]rayyychul 5 points6 points ago

British Colombian

Englishman living in Colombia?

[–]Chionophile 3 points4 points ago

BC'er is also acceptable.

[–]idspispopd 2 points3 points ago

Or Cascadian.

[–]hangers_on 2 points3 points ago

For Ontario, it's more like Torontonian or non-Torontonian.

Although non-Torontonian Ontarionian sounds kinda cool.

[–]music_user 1 point2 points ago

I've never understood all the Toronto hate in Canada. It is basically the backbone of the economy ( other than Alberta in recent years)

[–]TalonCompany 2 points3 points ago

I honestly don't think the hate is genuine; it's more like harmless ribbing.

[–]Fedcom 0 points1 point ago

I can't think of a good one for New Brunswick. The standard -er or -an suffixes just don't sound right.

Also Quebecker is a really ugly-sounding word. I much prefer saying Quebecois.

[–]idspispopd 0 points1 point ago

Just look up at the mountains today.

[–]blueschooler 1 point2 points ago

First thing I look up to when I wake up is Mt. Seymour, looks so sweet.

[–]ellifain 0 points1 point ago

I could hear this game from my dorm.

[–]T_I_M_B_A_R -5 points-4 points ago

It snows in Canada? Bacon, Mountie, Poutine, Hockey, Crappy Tire, Tim Hortons and sorry, but go fuck yourself. Piss Off!

[–]TalonCompany 5 points6 points ago

Bad day?

[–]stonecutterunderwear -4 points-3 points ago

Lambeau gets like this too, and they actually play with 4 downs

edit: the downvotes suggest you actually PREFER 3-down football. If you do, then you're fucking tools and you're only doing it out of a skewed sense of "patriotism."
