I like how clear the snow line is on the mountains. That's really cool!

[–]ChickaloonCharlie 21 points22 points ago

"Termination dust"

As winter approaches, the snow line works it way down the mountains until every fucking thing around is buried in snow...

[–]aaron416 5 points6 points ago

Can't wait. I love snow!

[–]poptartsandbutter 1 point2 points ago

We call it the same thing in Alaska. :)

[–]ChickaloonCharlie 1 point2 points ago

Valley Trash representing :)

My picture was taken at Eklutna Lake in Chugach Park

[–]12finemullets 1 point2 points ago

Six hours from Whitehorse, yesterday.

Imgur

[–]imkindacool 7 points8 points ago

Always wanted to check out the yukon!

[–]Orangemongoose1 3 points4 points ago

Please do, it's so incredible. The drive from Skagway, Alaska to Whitehorse is seriously the most beautiful drive I have ever been on. I would recommend it to anyone.

[–]zombiemullet 4 points5 points ago

Dawson creek?

[–]tango_41 3 points4 points ago

Close enough

[–]esquilax 0 points1 point ago

A real man would be making that snow yellow.

[–]nicmos 18 points19 points ago

nice to see an awesome pic of a place that hasn't been earthporned to death already. way to go OP.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

I love how the snowline is visible on the mountain almost exactly horizontal. Great shot!

[–]monacelli 2 points3 points ago

I had to look again because I thought that was a shadow at first. That's awesome.

[–]Yak_Yowns 8 points9 points ago

I want to be in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.

[–]Fitzhume 4 points5 points ago

I've been there. It's a great to be an alcoholic with like-minded people.

When we were staying at a hotel there, one night this guy drives a Harley into the lobby. Gets off, stumbles towards rooms, hotel staff non-chalant about it. Apparently it was the owner who goes out drinking regularly and does that when he gets too sauced to head all the way home.

[–]Codicosica 2 points3 points ago

I spent a year there going to school and planning on living there when I am done my degree. It is the most beautiful place and has some of the greatest people

[–]NilCealum 1 point2 points ago

My friend lives up there and it's beautiful.

[–]jimstr[S] 8 points9 points ago

Thanks for the comments gents and gals.

Please note that I am not the author of the photograph. I just sent an email to the authors so we can get more details/specifics about this shot.

The persons I know (a couple) that went there did the trip for a scientific studies of certain species/habitats, the shot was taken less about two or three weeks ago. They stayed around Whitehorse and went toward and in Alaska.

Maybe they have other shots worth showing here, I'll update you the best I can.. Sorry for my english.

edit precision

[–]jesset77 2 points3 points ago

Photo is good. Clear, great lighting, abundant resolution.

Congrats, sir. :D

[–]jimstr[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad you like it! But I did not take it myself, a friend of mine is back from a study/science trip.. He was between some city in Alaska and Whitehorse for about a month... I wish I was there!

e Sorry I didn't know where I was replying - it seems you already knew that I wasn't the author :)

[–]esquilax 1 point2 points ago

Your English is fine!

[–]kylewilky 6 points7 points ago

DUDE I LIVE IN WHITEHORSE :D

[–]jimstr[S] 3 points4 points ago

SWEET

[–]kylewilky 0 points1 point ago

i actually live in PC but thats close enough.

[–]FusRoDahMa 9 points10 points ago

I am going to build a cabin right there and make sure that I have internet access. Then I'm never leaving. Never.

[–]ZineZ 15 points16 points ago

good luck with Winter. Whitehorse is Northern Canada. Like. Way far north.

[–]FusRoDahMa 7 points8 points ago

I lived in Bettles Alaska before. That's 300 miles above the Arctic Circle. I can handle it! (Again as long as I have internet. *giggle)

[–]MangoCats 2 points3 points ago

Eating dried bundles of grass will get old, though. I don't think Amazon Prime includes free delivery that far afield.

[–]FusRoDahMa 1 point2 points ago

lol

[–]miles5459 0 points1 point ago

How cold does it get on winter? I'm Australian and today it maxed out to 22c and I was wearing a jumper. I honestly can't comprehend living through a canadian winter.

[–]ZineZ 3 points4 points ago

Yukon can get upto -30 - -35 Celsius + windchill - which is frightening. Add a buttfuck of snow too.

I'm from Toronto- here it goes up to -20c on the worst days + winchill which makes it feel like -25ish but that's rare. Honestly, though...you rarely feel it. Canada has adopted very well to the weather - so in the major cities you have heated busses, subways etc and very warm building. Our homes are well insulated and stay toasty. The only real problem is driving - especially during a snow storm. But depending on the severity of the snowstorm they may shut down schools etc

Plus winter clothing is awesome. I love winter; skiing etc makes me happy.

Honestly I'd hate it if it was hot all year.

[–]lolpete 1 point2 points ago

I'm with you on everything, especially winter clothing! I absolutely love toque weather :D

[–]miles5459 1 point2 points ago

Sounds cold. Wouldn't mind working in a resort in canada for a ski season.

[–]jimstr[S] 0 points1 point ago

Western Canada for that, east only has bumps! (there's a couple exceptions but it's nothing like the west...)

[–]musubk 6 points7 points ago

Looks a heck of a lot like the mountains just east of Kluane Lake on the Alaska Highway - I'm guessing that's where it is. I've been through there a few times, got a few pictures myself: 1. 2. 3.

[–]jimstr[S] 0 points1 point ago

Incredible views.. thanks for sharing

[–]lux_operon 3 points4 points ago

Wish there were places like this where I live...

[–]Kiyano 3 points4 points ago

How new is that pic or how lucky are you to have no snow I'm 5 hours from Whitehorse and we are buried in it D:

[–]jimstr[S] 1 point2 points ago

It's been taken about 2-3 weeks ago by a friend that has the opportunity to go there for studies on some wild animals and their habitats (I don't have much more details at the moment).

[–]cozmonut 2 points3 points ago

I was wondering why my bitizens always want to go to Whitehorse. Now, I know. TY OP.

[–]jimstr[S] 4 points5 points ago

You should still let them know about those..! You're welcome.

[–]sirprizes 2 points3 points ago

Bitizens?

[–]cozmonut 1 point2 points ago

[–]PotentialApathy 1 point2 points ago

Where exactly is this? Towards Carmacks or HJ?

[–]jimstr[S] 0 points1 point ago

I couldn't tell exactly but this picture has been taken between HJ (Haines Junction) and Kluane Lake..

[–]docid 2 points3 points ago

that up the road towards Dawson? beautiful before winter hits (and after the bugs are mostly gone), try driving it in January, lol.

[–]serpentjaguar 3 points4 points ago

My understanding is that travel in the far north is actually easier in the dead of winter since that's when everything is frozen solid as opposed to knee-deep (or more) in mud. This is especially true of Siberia since all of the major rivers flow north which means that their headwaters melt months in advance of their mouths, with the result that much of Siberia floods and turns into a continent-sized swamp that's virtually impassable. I don't think it's quite so severe in Canada and Alaska, due to different geography, but I have a friend who's a Tanana Indian from Tanana Alaska (they claim to be the best dog mushers in the world), and he says that while you can get places via bush-plane and boat in the summer months, you're basically not going to be driving anywhere very far and that if you want to get out into "the country" (his term), you have to do it during the winter with either snowmobiles, or better yet, dogs.

[–]docid 2 points3 points ago

Aye, there are many remote communities north of whitehorse, up the dempster, that are only reachable by land in the winter, but, along that way are some nasty passes when there are blizzards.

[–]jimstr[S] 1 point2 points ago

You reminded me of that tv series/documentary Ewan McGregor participated in, where they crossed some part of Russia/Siberia... Those mud roads looked like hell on earth.

[–]farmthis 1 point2 points ago

It's not toward Skagway, I know that much.

[–]jimstr[S] 1 point2 points ago

This picture has been taken between HJ (Haines Junction) and Kluane Lake, I think this helps you put a location on it.

[–]stuntaneous 2 points3 points ago

I wonder, at what point would such a scene outside your home become ordinary? Would it ever?

[–]jimstr[S] 1 point2 points ago

Never, in my opinion.. :)

[–]stevethemule 1 point2 points ago

awesome pic, i spent the summer up near whitehorse and its an unbelievable place.

[–]HNW 1 point2 points ago

Amazing. Simply amazing.

You've won the prestigious award of being my new background, so come on down!

[–]dgd765 1 point2 points ago

Winter is coming

[–]latenightcabdriving 1 point2 points ago

One of the simplest yet most beautiful pictures I've seen on this subreddit for a while. Kudos.

[–]jaykayzee 0 points1 point ago

East or West?

[–]jimstr[S] 4 points5 points ago

It's west of Whitehorse (somewhere between the Haines junction and Kluane Lake)!

[–]jaykayzee 1 point2 points ago

Cool it is really beautiful there, I thought it was closer to Destruction Bay...

[–]jimstr[S] 2 points3 points ago

Destruction bay?

The name is derived from the wind blowing down structures erected by the military during highway construction in 1942-43.

Had to google it, that's a mean name! It still looks hospitable

[–]jaykayzee 1 point2 points ago

Yeah it is gorgeous there. I was through in early Nov standing on the ice by the river, and saw some sort of monster in the water. It was an amazing day.

[–]haleyjaye 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for posting this, it makes for a lovely background.

[–]blargblargityblarg 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful! I love how you have measured in time not distance.

[–]pinkstars 0 points1 point ago

I hate the Yukon, but I love Whitehorse. Closest place with Tim Horton's.

[–]account7667 1 point2 points ago

That's how I use to draw mountains when I was a kid. Minus any artistic ability what so ever

[–]sebashole 1 point2 points ago

Mountains Gandalf, mountains!

[–]chamax15 1 point2 points ago

There's a great sled dog ranch right near there. Fantastic place to volunteer or visit!

[–]flownmuse 1 point2 points ago

That takes me back! A friend and I drove the Alcan on our way to Kodiak in '92. God's country!

[–]grecy 1 point2 points ago

I live in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.

I've posted up some photos recently to theroadchoseme.com and there are a lot more to come

[–]Chughug 1 point2 points ago

[–]shteamboatwilly 1 point2 points ago

Did anybody else think, "Grizzly Bear"?

[–]jimstr[S] 1 point2 points ago

they're there

[–]poobahlette 0 points1 point ago

For those that play the game: WHITE HORSE!

[–]smasters908 1 point2 points ago

Beautiful, eh?

[–]joshuajargon 1 point2 points ago

Is that a farm field? Are people farming only two hours outside Whitehorse?

[–]Akarik 1 point2 points ago

There are a number of farms around Whitehorse, great farmers market in the summer. I don't think that's one of them.

[–]joshuajargon 0 points1 point ago

Good to know. I'm guessing that land has to be pretty cheap?

[–]silent_p 1 point2 points ago

There's gold in them hills! GOOOOOOOOLD!

[–]biscuitball 1 point2 points ago

Well now I understand why Calvin wanted to run away to there.

What time of year is this?

[–]brockwhittaker 1 point2 points ago

Awesome photo, and yay for OC!

[–]jimstr[S] 0 points1 point ago

[–]mmarieb 1 point2 points ago

Lovely shot!

[–]jimstr[S] 0 points1 point ago

glad you liked it. I am not the author, but there might be more to come in a distant future...

[–]yeropinionman 0 points1 point ago

This photo has put "America the Beautiful" in my head. (I understand that Canada is not part of the USA.)

[–]jimstr[S] 1 point2 points ago

eh, it's still north-america! (and it's pretty near Alaska)

[–]pizzatime 0 points1 point ago

Like a bowl of nature soup.
