[–]mrpotatoman3 2 points3 points ago

[–]Fantasysage 2 points3 points ago

One of my favorite places I have visited was Istanbul; it's an incredibly beautiful city. Most people speak English and we had people go out of their way to help us many times. The best is the food though; WONDERFUL!

[–]Ftumsh 6 points7 points ago

Favourite food memory of Istanbul: boats moored down at the Galata Bridge. Each boat has a barbecue on it. Other boats are supplying them with fresh mackerel. They get the mackerel from the fisherman, fillet them, straight onto the barbecue then slap them into fresh home-made pita with salad and lemon juice. Only about $2 each and one of the loveliest things I have ever tasted in my life.

[–]Bad_Karma21 2 points3 points ago

I'm in Istanbul right now, and I want to know where they got this shot. Lovely city, but there's SO MANY DAMN PEOPLE. I liked it at first, but after three or four days, fighting a crowd everywhere you go just starts to wear on you. Wherever this photo was taken looks so quiet and peaceful... I must find it.

You can find a few cheap roof-top hookah cafe's with astounding views around the Süleymaniye Mosque. You could see from Pierre Loti to Kadıköy (almost 180 degree view) from the last one I've been to.

Edit: also try the traditionally cooked beans at the restaurants right next to the mosque.

[–]Boobiesmakesiteasier 1 point2 points ago

Spoiler, There's a book in the roof.

[–]Lazigold 2 points3 points ago

Actually a shot of Hagia Sofia, with Istanbul in the background, judging by the framing and focus.

[–]frilink 1 point2 points ago

This is Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque), which is next to Hagia Sofia.....

[–]VeniVidiUpVoti 0 points1 point ago

[–]Danjak 1 point2 points ago

I'd like to take a leap of faith off of that.

[–]Sir_Meowsalot -1 points0 points ago

I feel like if someone removed the birds from the picture it would really kick it up a notch.

[–]DannyHero 0 points1 point ago

Someone stayed at the Ritz! My hostel had the same view for 17$ a night.

Did Augie's Great Munipal Band (end of SW: Phantom Menace) start playing for anyone else when they saw the thumbnail for this image?

You're thinking of the Hagia Sophia. The mosque in the picture is the Sultan Ahmed (Blue) mosque.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Butcher ???

[–]Gabenisafatasshole -4 points-3 points ago

Looks beautiful, smells like shit.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I guess, you smell like rose. It is more than 1000 years old city.

[–]dirtywork102 -2 points-1 points ago

Isn't this Constantinople?

[–]Moonj64 2 points3 points ago

Istanbul and Constantinople are the same city. Originally it was Constantinople while it was the capital of the Western Roman Empire (after the empire split in two). This is also when the Hagia Sophia (the building in the picture) was constructed. Later when it was captured by the Ottomans they renamed it to Istanbul and converted the Hagia Sophia to a mosque (adding the towers, aka Minarets, alongside other changes).

Edit: Apparently I was mistaken about which building is in the picture (see this comment) , I must admit it looks very similar though.

[–]dirtywork102 -1 points0 points ago

I know this, I was being facetious but apparently people didn't get it. Thanks for the history though!

[–]z1ggy 0 points1 point ago

this image makes me want to throw some grenades haphazardly without regard for human life

[–]ChrisVolkoff -1 points0 points ago

I remember when I was still called Constantinople. Good memories about killing people.

[–]sje46 -1 points0 points ago

Pffft. I remember when it was still called Byzantium.
