Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

when i was a child, i was in lisbon with my mother and some friends of the family, and so they decided we should or rather to take me to the zoo, all i remember is this elephant they had there, people were petting and feeding it with their hands etc, i remember petting it and it had this hard rubbery skin, and its eyes were so sad and watery, it was very gentle, and i remember thinking to myself "if its so sad and miserable, why dont it just escape" and i looked down and saw that it was chained up by this skinny old chain that would absolutely not hold it, probably couldnt even hold me, and ever since i always wondered why, was it scared, would they beat it or harm it, and it wasnt till i got on reddit the last two years that it was explained to me that those chains are placed on it when it is very very young and cannot escape them, and so they grow up thinking that they cannot escape the chain, so for the rest of its life it just seems futile, i dont think ive ever been to another zoo after that, and i dated a chick for over 5 years that literally lives across the street from the bronx zoo....once or twice ive walked by the central park petting zoo, going to or coming from somewhere, ive stopped up on the sidewalk, but ive never go down or in...so sad how humans treat animals

yes exactly its all in the head, they dont try to break the chain anymore because they remember that when they tried it didnt work

it was so sad, ive never forgotten the experience, the skin felt like wrinkled rubber, like thick tire rubber, i fed it too

and btw i totally understand what you mean about not wanting to go back to the zoo, i worked in petstores and since i did i dont want petstores to exist anymore
