I have good news for you then, because plants don't actually grow in the way that this picture implies. They don't grow from the bottom up, they grow from the top and the sides, with some additional very tiny amounts of growth as existing live cells expand.

Watch this and you'll see that nothing new comes out from the bottom. The lower leaves are pushed up, but not much. Growth down at the oldest part of the plant is almost all lateral growth, to provide better support for the new stuff coming out the top.

As a result, the mechanics of this picture are deeply flawed, and perhaps that is what is sad about it. For all his patience this man won't achieve his goal. All he will have is a noose tied to the bottom of a tree.

Perhaps, or maybe, as a realist it's an awakening. Maybe what you see (instead of the depressing image), is that the choices we make in our lives water habits. Those habits, could get us some good, or get us our inevitable death. I find the symbolism in the picture quite revealing. Water what you will, and maybe it'll be in some shape or formed attached to an inevitable downfall. Or water habits elsewhere, and you may live to see the beauty you nourished...

Trees don't grow by adding cells to the bottom to push all the other cells upwards. That would be silly and inefficient. And in a organism with a nervous system it would be very painful.

Which is why growing pains suck so hard. Seriously, being a tree would be chill.

I'm not too sure if I've ever looked at an oak sprout up close before, but I'm guessing they are premature branches that allow for photosynthesis but won't develop into full branches. As the tree matures they might fall off.

I'm looking it up on Wikipedia as I type this, but all I've found is that the Order, Family, and Genus of oak trees all seem suspiciously homophobic (Fagales, Fagaceae, Quercus)

Though it looks like depending on growing conditions, certain oaks can be either a tree or a shrub.

Apparently a shrub is a short stubby tree with all those bunches of branches still there.

Also, now I know what a shrubbery is.

And another name for a bush is a 'subshrub'.

Wikipedia is awesome...Even though I still have no answers.
