[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 42 points43 points ago

Glad you guys like it! I'm one of the folks that did this (my co-founder said he would comment as well) -- if you have any questions about pricing or the process, throw them my way.

[–]dharmabum3 7 points8 points ago

About how much did that epic rim of power cost?

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 12 points13 points ago

We gave stotle52 a pretty hefty discount because it was such a cool idea -- we'd charge about $350 for a cut that covers that much of the rim on both sides.

[–]asad1372012 CAAD10-4 9 points10 points ago

That's kinda backwards from how it should be, isn't it? The first person pays more for the shop having to do all the upfront custom work, but after that the program is done and the process is known so it should be cheaper after the prototype phase.

How much machine time does that job take?

[–]Antranik1969 Raleigh Rapier Fixie (52/17) & 1998 Softride Century 8 points9 points ago

well no, prototypes can go wrong.

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, exactly -- he's also taking a risk with the first one. It took an hour per side iirc.

[–]VDuBivore 0 points1 point ago

Is it leaf? That is way to long to be vinyl.

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 3 points4 points ago

It's neither-- it's laser-etched! The rim was solid black when he brought it in, we just etched away the dye.

[–]sixtysevensouth2010 Mercier Kilo TT Pro 3 points4 points ago

Does this do anything to the structural integrity of the rim?

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 3 points4 points ago

No, the dye layer is super thin (think microns).

[–]VDuBivore 0 points1 point ago

Oh, now the timeframe makes sense.

[–]yirimyah 0 points1 point ago

And the cost.

[–]complexery 3 points4 points ago

Yes, but this probably helps them marketing wise which might be why they gave him some discount.

I mean, it made me want that.

[–]asad1372012 CAAD10-4 6 points7 points ago

Actually I realize why -- OP came to the shop with an idea for a product for the shop to sell -- so the shop is investing in producing a product for itself. In my comment, I was thinking more of the model where a person has a shop produce a product for the person to sell, in which case the prototype costs a lot but subsequent pieces cost less to the person.

[–]mecax 7 points8 points ago

Bad idea, the shop will get sued by the Tolkien Trust if they put these on the market. They have zero sense of humor about this stuff and are REALLY litigious.

Their lawyers are ordered to fire at will on anything that looks slightly like it might be a Tolkien product, and (as it's in their financial intests to do so), these lawyers are constantly trawling the internet looking for exactly this kind of thing.

[–]Antranik1969 Raleigh Rapier Fixie (52/17) & 1998 Softride Century 0 points1 point ago

damn, he has a point.

[–]complexery 1 point2 points ago

shit, we better start downvoting.. HIDE IT FROM THE BAD MEN!

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 3 points4 points ago

Yeesh, that's some scary stuff. What I can say is that the OP risked his rim, and we were just risking our time and wear on our machines. It seemed fair to give him a good discount at the time and I'm glad we got to help with the project... it's kind of why we opened the shop in the first place. We want to see people make beautiful, interesting things.

[–]dharmabum3 1 point2 points ago

Wow, thats less than I had imagined and totally worth it!

[–]khafra 4 points5 points ago

Does it make the bicycle and rider invisible, or just the rider?

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 4 points5 points ago

Neither; if you've ever driven a car, you'll know that cyclists and their bikes are already invisible.

[–]dragonnovsvd2009 TREK FUEL EX7 6 points7 points ago

I don't want to be an idiot, but I must know, what's so special about the rims? Is it the writing? I can't really make out what it says.

[–]TheRobberDotCom 4 points5 points ago

Someone who expects everyone to know everything downvoted you, but I'll be nice:

It's the engraving from the ring in the Lord of the Rings movies (I'm not sure if it appears like this in illustrations for the original books as well).

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 1 point2 points ago

Kinda wishing the OP had mentioned this :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Ring#Inscription

[–]thebayisinthearea 1 point2 points ago

What did you use to make the machined brake surface black? I'm building a DT Swiss RR 585 hoop to a disc hub and would like to do something about the silver braking surface of the rim.

What you guys did looks pretty good. I have limited knowledge of anodizing, so I'm not sure if it can be applied selectively. I also figured the powder coating process may damage the finish of the rest of the wheel.

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 4 points5 points ago

The rim that he brought in was already anodized black -- we actually etched away part of the dye that's trapped under the anodization layer to get the white parts. I understand that spot anodization is possible, but it's not something I've experimented with. I have played around with powder-coating small areas, but haven't had much success with that yet.

[–]thebayisinthearea 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the reply, I'll look into spot anodizing.

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 1 point2 points ago

Np, good luck!

[–]TheKingOfPoon 3 points4 points ago

dont know.

[–]enaim254 102 points103 points ago

My gut reaction was an audible gasp and saying "Oh my god" out loud. I want that.

[–]citylikeAMradio 23 points24 points ago

If only the writing was glow in the dark..

[–]KamikazeSexPilot 16 points17 points ago

Or you could get the script done in Photochromatic paint like this bike but not pink.

[–]TofonEnter bike & year 7 points8 points ago

For this idea I think it'd be cooler with the words appearing only in the dark rather than in the light, but holy crap that's sick. I want to find this paint now.

[–]KamikazeSexPilot 5 points6 points ago

The problem with glow in the dark paint is for most purposes you never see it unless you specifically go and sit your bike under a light for half an hour and then go ride it for 15 minutes. 99% of the time you're riding around at sunset and by the time the sun has set enough to see glow in the dark paint, the glow in the dark paint hasn't had enough light to stay glowy and you see nothing.

My mate had a glow in the dark frame and I only ever saw it glow once when he let it sit under a light for ages.

[–]casual_maritime1980s Shogun 300 5 points6 points ago

It seems like you could build some sort of dark box around the rim that has some bright LEDs that activate the glow paint but don't illuminate outside of the box. Then as you spin the wheels the glow paint would light up and then start slowly fading again once you stop spinning.

[–]avo_cado 1 point2 points ago

High intensity UV LEDs on the fork.

[–]casual_maritime1980s Shogun 300 0 points1 point ago

That would definitely be a simpler way of doing it.

[–]BlueberryspiesGlo Peugeot PX-10, Kilo TT, Novara Randonee 1 point2 points ago

As someone who just painted his bike glow in the dark, I agree with this assessment.

[–]Duke_Spanks 2 points3 points ago

If you paint the rim the same color the photocramatic paint is in the sunlight, they would appear in the shade. Like if the rim was painted pink and the paint from the video was painted over it.

[–]dmxgrrbark 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit! I need to find out more about this paint!

[–]stotle52Enter bike & year[S] 0 points1 point ago

not paint ...its the absence of paint

[–]xtc46 1 point2 points ago

[–]reardan 6 points7 points ago

i want it to glow from brake heat

[–]DatBlackStar 4 points5 points ago

[–]BABYEATER1012 0 points1 point ago

Use phosphorescent paint. It glows extremely bright. Typically it takes about 15mins and lasts about 24hrs of glow.

[–]USxMARINE 1 point2 points ago

Dude, I don't even visit or comment in this subreddit, shit I don't own a bike anymore (I should really get one) and I was like this has to be the greatest that can happen to a bicycling subreddit ever.

[–]platnumcy -4 points-3 points ago

[–]Christopha 61 points62 points ago

[–]twowheels 20 points21 points ago

Funny thing is, that would look really out of place on a Rivendell.

[–]iHaveBadIdeasMonster bike 3 points4 points ago

[–]javastripped 77 points78 points ago

[–]guy1138 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, actually, since it doesn't have a machined braking surface, it will likely be the rear wheel on a fixed gear bike.

[–]Leockard 17 points18 points ago

Holy damn. Two of my favorite things in one place. How did you do it?

[–]stotle52Enter bike & year[S] 24 points25 points ago

I got these guys to do the lasering http://dangerawesome.co/ they did a great job

[–]Leockard 8 points9 points ago

How much?

[–]stotle52Enter bike & year[S] 13 points14 points ago

It was their first time so I got it pretty cheap.. in the future i think they will have to charge around $350 for that amount of lasering

[–]nadeemtron 36 points37 points ago

One of the co-founders of danger!awesome here, $350 is probably about right but that's also for both sides. And we're always looking to make deals on high-end equipment and/or novel designs with fellow geeks :)

[–]nadeemtron 6 points7 points ago

[–]MoikeeTrek 1.5t 1 point2 points ago

Are there any you could recommend?

[–]ParrotofDoomRibble winter trainer Commencal Meta 5.5 -1 points0 points ago

I'm afraid not, it isn't something I've ever had cause to pay for.

[–]apteryx_274 1 point2 points ago

Tolkien-loving cyclists? in the UK? who love LOTR? you don't say! The UK would clearly be one of the best places to get this done, after NZ.

[–]XTC-FTW 2 points3 points ago

I WILL PAY FOR THIS SERVICE AND GET MY RIMS DONE LIKE THAT TOO

[–]nadeemtron 0 points1 point ago

Gosh darnit that's all we're asking for. It's important that any type of publicity on the web be conducted at the highest volume possible.

[–]XTC-FTW 0 points1 point ago

Well if you give me two free rims I will ride to Mordor telling everyone where I got the rims.

[–]superkidney 3 points4 points ago

perhaps totally worth it.

[–]mrdmnd2013 Specialized SL4 Tarmac Expert 2 points3 points ago

Do you live in Central Square? I live right on Mass Ave in Central - we should ride sometime so I can see these sweet rims in person.

[–]nadeemtron 4 points5 points ago

And do stop by d!a, we're right on mass ave and prospect and would love to see more bikers!

[–]mrdmnd2013 Specialized SL4 Tarmac Expert 1 point2 points ago

Can you safely laser carbon fiber? I want to get my name on my chainstays and I think that'd be a classy way to do it.

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 3 points4 points ago

I've never done carbon fiber and it looks like it might be a difficult material to work with. If you have a chainstay that you're willing to risk, we'd be happy to try it gratis (in exchange for the knowledge! :).

[–]mrdmnd2013 Specialized SL4 Tarmac Expert 1 point2 points ago

Sorry - not eager to take risks with the new bike! I might bring my cross bike in, which is steel, to check out the work you guys do. I bike past your store most nights, so I'll probably drop in if you're open.

[–]alawibabaSpecialized Daily 1 point2 points ago

That's understandable! :) Be sure to swing by -- I'm new to biking in the city, so I'm eager for advice in that department. A friend already suggested etching a ruler on my seat-post.

[–]nadeemtron 0 points1 point ago

Sadly, my limited experience with carbon fiber and our CO2 laser tells me "no." Not because it's unsafe - simply because our laser doesn't really make a dent in carbon fiber...sowwy :/

[–]Yossarian33Jake the Snake (2012) 8 points9 points ago

Absolutely stunning. Caveat: I would never, ever ride that. I'd just hang it on a wall and stare at it.

This is called The Black Speech, the language of Mordor. It tells of the the One Ring's power to control all the other rings.

[–]senses3 1 point2 points ago

[–]senses3 0 points1 point ago
