[–]Roont 10 points11 points ago

Conjunction junction, what's your function? (sorry, could not stop my fingers from typing that)

[–]twist3d7 3 points4 points ago

I understand and agree, form or shape one eye signals and so forth.

Did it work? I'm not so sure.

[–]FuckOffMightBe2Kind 5 points6 points ago

As a psychology major, let me help you out: You can't get intimidated by the long words, if you know one of them you can use it and context clues to understand the whole term. So the first thing that pops out of me is gestalt (form of psychology that's fundamental idea is that partial information can be used to make a full picture in our minds), monocular (I don't remember what this exactly pertains to but I know it has to do with the eyes and the way they work), depth cues (pretty much the way it sounds), and what not (added for humor).

So what we have is that the theory of gestalt psychology says that the brighter building must be closer because that's how the context cues of the sun and your position to the building should work. The fact of the matter is that we aren't there, we can't know for certain which is closer but the brain works in a way that tells us that 'bright things must be in front'.

TLDR:

[–]megiston 13 points14 points ago

This gestalt cue was observed by Leonardo da Vinci who said that

Among bodies equal in size and distance, that which shines the more brightly seems to the eye nearer.

Later psychologists verified this more rigorously in human subject experiments.

As it turns out, in nature, nearer parts of an image actually are slightly more likely to be brighter. The reason is thought to be due to the effects of shadows in complex 3D scenes.

Recently, a plausible neurophysicological basis was found in the early primate visual system: neurons that prefer bright stimuli tend to also prefer near stimuli.

[–]helloryan 7 points8 points ago

Mm indeed.

[–]doesntakethehighroad 21 points22 points ago

It's also dependent on hue in addition to luminosity. Warm colors in front and cool colors in back. Orange is a warm color and blue is a cool color.

[–]Yummybearr 94 points95 points ago

Go home brain , you're drunk

[–]SolidBlues 26 points27 points ago

I didn't have a problem seeing that the building on the left was the one closest in the picture. Does that mean I don't have a human brain?

[–]StevieSmiley 36 points37 points ago

Not at all. It means your brain is explicitly of monkey origin.

[–]megiston 22 points23 points ago

Nope. Monkeys are thought to see the same illusion. His brain is more likely to be from something subterranean, like a mole or a gopher, or some creature that looks out at bright things from inside dark places. Hope that is helpful.

[–]StevieSmiley 12 points13 points ago

It only takes a moment of observation to figure out which is in front. However our brain tells us that lighter objects belong in front.

[–]ailish 3 points4 points ago

That's what I saw first. Then I wondered if that was the correct one, so I convinced my brain that the building on the right is in front. Now I just have a headache.

[–]Gizank 2 points3 points ago

Just a little attention to detail, at the edge where the buildings overlap in particular, makes it clear which building is in front. However, if you squint your eyes a bit and sorta let go of your attention to the shapes in that edge, the illusion that the farther building is actually closer becomes much more apparent. Drawing well kind of relies on getting a grip on this effect.

As an aside, I don't know if it does it for other people, but I get a kind of sensory reaction to illusions like this and switching back and forth between the two perspectives. It's something like an extremely mild case of vertigo for just a second and is one of the primary reasons I love representational art.

[–]danceinmyundies 6 points7 points ago

You can actually practice doing this and it becomes second nature real quick. Pre-dental students sit and do this all the time in preparation for the DAT exam to apply for school.

Here's another one. Try to get the ballarina to spin both ways!

[–]Mrmooncraft 2 points3 points ago

[–]adamgram 49 points50 points ago

That actually looks totally believable as a row of identical buildings. That makes me want to play Sim City.

[–]ailish 10 points11 points ago

Ha! Once or twice a year I get a bug up my ass to play Sim City. I go hardcore for a week or two, then lose interest. Now I want to play it, too.

[–]Jman513 67 points68 points ago

/r/illusionporn would love this

[–]imdwalrus 212 points213 points ago

Why does reddit feel the need to add "porn" to every subtitle name?

[–]lazugod 185 points186 points ago

  1. It's a convenient self-aware way to label subreddits dedicated to wasting time looking at pretty pictures.

  2. It gradually makes the word "pornography" okay to say in public by disassociating it with sexuality.

  3. It's still a shocking enough word to grab people's attention, and karma.

  4. People like being copycats and repeating tired phrases.

[–]heyguyscomeon 96 points97 points ago

I like the slow rise of contempt in this post's tone.

[–]SynthDark 27 points28 points ago

I thought I was viewing this on /r/mildlyinteresting...

[–]Damadawf 80 points81 points ago

Why did you feel the need to edit that comment and insist that the subreddit you suggested was real? Did someone send you a hate filled private message promising to cut off your penis for lying or something?

[–]getchar 45 points46 points ago

Ha, no. Somebody said it belonged on /r/veryinteresting, which technically exists but just barely. And I didn't want OP to think I was having a go, because it is a cool picture. I also don't want anyone to think I'm trying to sound British but "having a go" is really the most appropriate phrase. I just don't know what to do anymore!

[–]webby_mc_webberson 9 points10 points ago

[–]StormXMX 17 points18 points ago

Just a little insight into the..questionable...design of these buildings:

In Egypt, there are hundreds of these apartments. They were introduced following the 1952 revolution where Egypt's President Gamal Abdel Nasser decided to implement a Nasserist approach - heavily influenced by communism. The lack of any decent visual design, and the huge amount of apartments is a staple of Nasserism/Communism in Egypt.

Following his death, Former President Anwar al Sadat tried to reverse such communist measures, but hundreds of these buildings had already been built.

Regarding the air conditioning, very few buildings in Egypt have a central system, and so it is not uncommon to see air conditioners and also satellites (for TV) hanging out in balconies or on the sides of these buildings.

[–]Your_socks 17 points18 points ago

This building is actually in Dokki - tahrir street - and was built in the 80s I believe along with the rest of the towers in this block.

Also, communism isn't responsible for what clients demanded from contractors, Egypt was always slow to adapt to new concepts such as the importance of a sound architectural design back in the day or with the trend we are fighting right now which is introducing the importance of construction management engineers to the market.

[–]fetus_eater_skywalka 3 points4 points ago

Yeah i live in a place like this but its in Maadi (you know the place near family cinema) it's so depressing seeing it everyday! so hopefully we'll be moving to a villa in tagamo3 soon.

[–]WeaponsGradeHumanity 5 points6 points ago

[–]MasterAqua 2 points3 points ago

Odd, I saw the correct overlap in the image until I read the title. Then I had to question it and look closely at the overlapping area before confirming my brain's original decision. The left building is in front of the right, correct? I came to this final conclusion after closely examining the portions that would have to be jutting out from the building on the right for it to be in front: they are inconsistent. In addition, there is a satellite clearly attached to the left building that is covering up the right building.

The reasons our brains might initially see the left being in the background are: 1. the overlapping "balconies" seen from afar, and 2. the fact that the left building is a colder, darker and less saturated color than the right. Our brains perceive cooler colors (i.e. bluer) as farther away; same with low saturation. Combine this with darker and you get the perception of shadow, which would lead to the more sensible conclusion that the light source is behind/between the objects, but perhaps a lot of people's brains just jumped the gun...?

Protip: Zoom in on the picture

RL tip: LOOK AT THE STREETS.

[–]Retawtrams 1 point2 points ago

We would also appreciate this over in /r/woahdude

[–]tag0006 1 point2 points ago

Our brain perceives brighter, more clear objects as closer. Thus, this illusion.

[–]knome 2 points3 points ago

Those look like window units. How often do those things come barreling down to the street below?

[–]swagcat 2 points3 points ago

God dammit OP, just tell us what building is the one in the front

[–]JangSaverem 2 points3 points ago

Wait...was I supposed to see the one on the right as being in front of the one on the left? I saw the one on the left in front? Is that good or bad? Am I going to die?

[–]JerFlip 3 points4 points ago

It's not very difficult to see that the left building is in front

[–]oodelay 3 points4 points ago

I love Cairo. Craziest city ever.

[–]thecomicbookvillain 0 points1 point ago

That's because light advances and dark recedes :) a clever little trick from our brain.

[–]ztkraptor 2 points3 points ago

One on left is in front, one on right is in back, pretty easy to see that...

[–]theRageAtron 0 points1 point ago

You just wrinkled my brain man

[–]TheCheesemongere 0 points1 point ago

This image makes me unnecessarily angry.

[–]TearHugger -1 points0 points ago

This would go quite well in /r/mildlyinteresting.

[–]aimpointcx4 -1 points0 points ago

Everyone has a Mr.Slim by Mitsubishi electronics !

[–]Biggrodd 0 points1 point ago

I'd say left is in front because there is no light hitting it, whereas if the right building was I'm front light would be hitting the left hand building.. I think.. :/

[–]GotGasOn 0 points1 point ago

But which one did you think was in front?! It's too late for this shit.

[–]nusmesa -1 points0 points ago

Kinda obvious because if the one on the right would be in front the light would have be seen on the left building too.

[–]naboofighter93 -2 points-1 points ago

Buildception!

[–]whynotboidzerg 0 points1 point ago

Oouuuuch my head.......

[–]beastslayer65 -1 points0 points ago

not playable

[–]titansballs 0 points1 point ago

WHICH IS WHICH!?!?!

[–]emuelcz -1 points0 points ago

Oh my god, I didn't know light could do this!

Can we please have someone from the MIT Harvard Carl Sagan Institute of Science explain this?

[–]imperialxcereal 0 points1 point ago

Once my brain figured out the building on the left was in front, I'm having an incredibly hard time seeing the picture how I did before I figured it out. Is there a scientific explanation for that? Why is it that once you figure out an illusion, your brain won't allow you to see it the way you did prior to figuring the illusion out?

[–]Keegles12 -1 points0 points ago

Well this is a mind fuck.

[–]Rab_Legend -1 points0 points ago

In the thumbnail it looks like one building

[–]xyroclast 0 points1 point ago

Ahh, if I look at the dividing line long enough, my stomach starts to twitch

[–]Sharain 0 points1 point ago

My brain, it hurts...

Excellent illusion right there.

[–]parannoyedandroid 0 points1 point ago

This is mind-fucky.

[–]sulemankhaled -1 points0 points ago

I know where these buildings are , i see em everyday in my mirror, right one is in the front.

[–]zoltanps -1 points0 points ago

It's an optical contusion!

[–]sighbourbon 0 points1 point ago

beautiful ambiguity

[–]pomegranatelover 0 points1 point ago

This picture hurts my head

[–]alyy -2 points-1 points ago

Wait.. isn't this in Somouha Alexandria?

[–]Owan 0 points1 point ago

Hmm.. looking at it, I can't really see the building on the right as the one in the front unless I sort of block out the overlap portion

[–]gandilf -1 points0 points ago

Damn these double negatives!

[–]Stevy_o 0 points1 point ago

Stop playing with my mind!

[–]glyphlilirin -1 points0 points ago

It's a lot like that photo of Tiger Woods that everyone thought was photoshopped.

[–]ibrokeitthrice -1 points0 points ago

O_o... o_O

[–]theoutlet 1 point2 points ago

I think you brained my damage.

[–]cyanineblue 0 points1 point ago

The conflict between my mind and my eyes is painful.

[–]tristontriston 0 points1 point ago

This is driving me crazy
