Eh, that's just /b/. /co/ is alright, /vg/ is awesome, /ck/ is pretty great, /tg/'s not my thing but it's very civilized.

It just matters where you go. I go on both, Reddit can be pretty awful too, especially /r/politics and /r/atheism.

Well, sometimes. I'm a pretty big /traditional gamer/, and I enjoy the board, but don't fool yourself. You're still on 4chan. That place is like the Arakkis of websites. Lots of great stuff comes from there, but most of it is wasteland, harsh people, shitstorms, and Trollsign.

/vg/ talks video games like r/gaming, If you don't like a game instead of downvotes you get spammed by "TROLL!!!". I wanted to talk about mods that aren't porn in TES General and the replies were variations of "u gay m8?".

I've been on 4chan for quite a while (Day 1), and have never had this kind of moment. I guess you just get used to it after a while. Scat, gore, CP, it's all meaningless now.

Reddit is good for your friends to sit back and laugh at some funny pictures. 4chan, you leave your friends and emotions at the door, and go spelunking in the world's largest pile of shit. The experience for newcomers is depressing, horrible, and downright disgusting. They'll find only a few items worth seeing, and leave.

But those that stick around the caves and meet the communities that spring up will eventually learn to navigate and fill their browsing with tons of great stuff. After a while you can avoid the shit entirely, and find great things worth seeing.

Sure, sometimes the rogue poop-dwelling cave dinosaur comes out, throws some viciously illegal porn your way, but that's fine. That's what it's there for, and you just gotta accept that.

And nearly a decade after having seen Thread #1 and having met the man behind the blood-smeared curtain, people like me have learned to turn 4chan into the greatest source of knowledge and community in the world.

There was a science fiction story I read before that I used to love, and sort of described 4chan. I just spent some time looking, and can't find it on Google, nor can I remember the name.

It was about a teenager who got a job at a burger restaurant in the middle of nowhere, working the night shift. Strange people would come in at night, and the owner explained that they were people from other dimensions, and that while everything in the universe changed per dimension, his restaurant stayed in the same place somehow which made it a frequent meeting point.

These aliens could move through dimensions, but only randomly, as navigation was extremely difficult and so you'd never see the same person twice. Except a few guys in a group, who the owner said either never left or learned to navigate better than anyone else.

The kid wants to join them and see time and space, but the alien guy explains the greatness of Earth, and so the kid decides to stay.

Great story. I'd love to read it again.

I definitely agree on the civilized and mature part. Reddit has a wider variety of people in terms of age, I think. In 4chan's defense, however, /b/ doesn't sum up the site. There are actually a few decent places to browse if you happen to find the right thread. I still go over to 4chan once in a while just to browse. And I have to admit, that I have never laughed harder in my life at some of the things I've found over there.

I know what you mean. When 4chan is good, it is biblically good. Legendarily funny stuff. When it comes to /b/, I just got tired of digging through page after page of porn requests, dead horses being beaten, 12 year olds trying to out offend or out shock value each other, and veiled and not so veiled requests for CP to actually get to anything worthwhile.

Some of the other boards can be quite good, but a lot are over-moderated and bogged down by inane rules (to keep them from turning into /b/).

It's so nice to have the upvote/downvote system acting as a screen for what makes it to the front page.

Yeah but at what cost? No one is ever experimenting with anything here on reddit. The OC created here is at best some guy DOING ONE TYPE OF DRAWING THEN SPAMMING IT ALL OVER THE SITE TO BRING FAME TO HIS IDENTITY. But that's at best, everything else is just some picture on /r/pics with text on it being so lame and boring even my grandma would find it funny.
