Gah, that can be a really awful way to go too. I've heard it's not uncommon for there to be huge gouge marks and chunks out of the persons neck after they die. I guess from them desperately trying to get the noose off as they slowly strangle to death. It's not a clean way to go if your neck doesn't automatically snap.

Makes me shudder just thinking about it.

If they're not discovered quickly, their face generally turns black as the blood rush to their face dries and darkens. The tongue also swells quite horrifically. Sometimes their eyes swell and their lids can't cover them.
