During the Soviet era

Few people know that Stalin had to block out the sun to defeat Hitler's solar powered hunter-killer bots.

[–]rnrigfts 258 points259 points ago

History is fucking awesome.

[–]kingof69ng 85 points86 points ago

Why'd I google this?

[–]Nickdanger3rdEye 84 points85 points ago

Hope.

Hope is a powerful thing.

[–]SpamFilterHatesMe 29 points30 points ago

I read that as "Hitler is fucking awesome".

[–]anidnmeno 6 points7 points ago

well he DID kill Hitler

[–]ThatDutchLad 67 points68 points ago

Stalin was so powerful, he could turn off the sun.

But then Russia got too cold, so the sun created another sun.

GLOBAL WARMING!!!

[–]105Hummel 11 points12 points ago

EXPLOSIOOOOONNNNNSSS

[–]Osmodius 3 points4 points ago

I... uh.

[–]Vassago81 13 points14 points ago

He just used their preset kill limit against them.

[–]Chowder350 3 points4 points ago

He fought like his love, hard and fast.

[–]vonShang 7 points8 points ago

Actually there were NAZI Vampires, and they blocked the sun.

[–]105Hummel 2 points3 points ago

Nazi doesn't have to be capitalized like that.

[–]orthag 26 points27 points ago

NAZIS are different from Nazis. They're bigger.

[–]gjhgjh 4 points5 points ago

This doesn't surprise me. According to Wikipedia at the age of seven Stalin contracted smallpox. He must have been a bad ass even at that age to not to have died from it.

[–]RelaxedChap 5 points6 points ago

Castle Wolfenstein was apparently based on real events.

[–]Catch_twenty-two 4 points5 points ago

Someone do us a favor and put this in /r/nocontext

[–]Authenticait 2 points3 points ago

It is done

[–]shellsonthefloor 692 points693 points ago

This still occurs. The lack of sunlight at high latitudes is not unique to the Soviet era.

[–]idefix24 152 points153 points ago

Yep, SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a problem at high latitudes. It's common to spend all of the sunlight hours inside (at work or school) in winter and that can lead to depression.

[–]kchan810 115 points116 points ago

Can lead to depression? Well that's kind of sad :(

[–]chewp911 82 points83 points ago

Yeah, come up to the North sometime, and you'll see why addiction and depression are so rampant.

[–]aku42 58 points59 points ago

I'm in Ireland, up until today I hadn't seen the sun in 3 days.

[–]chewp911 50 points51 points ago

I'm in the Yukon, I've got you beat north-wise.

[–]aku42 16 points17 points ago

You win.

[–]Peaceblaster86 40 points41 points ago

You kon

[–]CryoGuy 18 points19 points ago

You kont

[–]Pravusmentis 8 points9 points ago

Sun lamps for everykon!

[–]hi_i_am_new 5 points6 points ago

I'm in Latin America and up until today I hadn't seen the sun in 2 weeks.

[–]djwink 16 points17 points ago

You should turn off your computer and get outside more.

[–]BipolarBear0 7 points8 points ago

I'm in Colorado, and we get an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. I feel bad for you.

[–]Cantfindafuckinusern 21 points22 points ago

One of the reasons Canada's suicide rates go way up in winter I believe. I work in a shop with no windows, just two bay doors, in summer it's nice because the bay doors are wide open, with a warm breeze, but in winter I get there before the sun shows and leave after it sets, too cold to open the doors. Only time I see the sun is on the weekends if the clouds ever disperse.

[–]atheist4jesus 13 points14 points ago

And Alaska, huge rates of alcohol and drug abuse.

[–]zgardner44 12 points13 points ago

Vitamin D deficiency. It can be brutal. But luckily, we have solutions such as the Happy Light, or you can buy Vitamin D in pill form.

[–]D4rkw1nt3r 5 points6 points ago

You still need UV light for your body to be able to make the bioactive form of it.

[–]Rizzlamuerte 1 point2 points ago

Or build a giant mirror

[–]sparklingbluelight 1 point2 points ago

Yep, welcome to New England when the sun comes up in the winter at 7:30 and goes down at around 4. So, literally, during the winter the entire time the sun is out I am inside. Not good with S.A.D.

[–]Chicken-n-Waffles 3 points4 points ago

Yes. You can get SAD lights to alleviate the depression.

[–]byleth 13 points14 points ago

Life can lead to depression.

[–]Jniede 6 points7 points ago

I work night shift and barely see the light of day especially in winter. Should I be doing something like this?

[–]mossling 3 points4 points ago

if you feel depressed or lethargic, it can help. i suffer from (among other things) severe depression, and while we lived in alaska, we used full spectrum light bulbs throughout the house. the helped me handle the long winter nights.

[–]ti_ni-po_ni 3 points4 points ago

In some places they don't even have sunlight in the winter.

[–]wdejr 1 point2 points ago

My mom always told me to eat almonds during the winter because it makes up for the lost vitamin D. It really works! Pacific North West resident.

[–]sassifrassilassi 9 points10 points ago

Almonds actually don't have any vitamin D. Perhaps you're thinking of vitamin E? Eggs And fish are good vitamin D sources, though.

[–]Groty 75 points76 points ago

Yup. Theories also attribute the lack of sunlight to the prevalence of M.S. in New England and Canada. Vitamin D folks, have your kids take vitamin D.

[–]sup3rmark 120 points121 points ago

Theories also attribute the lack of sunlight to the prevalence of M.S. in New England and Canada.

I think you got the wording backwards. They attribute the prevalence of MS to the lack of sunlight. I don't think multiple sclerosis makes it dark outside (though I could be mistaken).

[–]RekodeGallo 11 points12 points ago

Or substitute the word "credit". Theories also -credit- the lack of sunlight -for- the prevalence of M.S. in New England and Canada.

[–]sup3rmark 9 points10 points ago

Blame is probably the best choice if we're changing the word anyway :P

[–]rawbamatic 6 points7 points ago

This doesn't make sense to me. I live in Northern Ontario and all of the UK is further North than we are. New England is further south than most of Europe.

[–]redmercuryvendor 15 points16 points ago

Here in the UK, we have very little sun and being miserable is a national passtime. I'm not sure what the issue is.

[–]ItsTyrrellYo 4 points5 points ago

Here in Ireland, we get very little sun, more rain than the UK due to the Atlantic, and all we do is complain about the weather and the price of petrol.

[–]crisissweet 3 points4 points ago

Came here to say just that, it's for vitamin D deficiencies ..

[–]silent_p 15 points16 points ago

They still do the same thing, but with significantly less Lenin.

[–]neverlaid 22 points23 points ago

Thanks for this. The title sounds like the communists were so against anyone enjoying themselves that they rationed the sunlight. "No comrade, you have used your allotment of sun for the week return to your home".

[–]Zelcron 7 points8 points ago

TIL that communism literally forces the sun out of the sky.

[–]anusface 5 points6 points ago

I'm pretty sure continental drift moved Russia north during the Soviet era and back south when communism fell.

[–]Xorg_Xalargsky 8 points9 points ago

Are you sure it's not because communists are evil? You know...communists and all...

[–]SociallyAwkwardPony 3 points4 points ago

I can attest to doing this in pre-school in the 90's. It was a rather normal occurance so it being in /r/wtf seems wrong. We even had someone play piano during the procedure to keep us from getting too bored (it was done in the music/activity hall to accomodate all 30 or so of us).

[–]hastasiempre 1 point2 points ago

Come on, man, you are killing it. Everyone knows how people "had to" do things during the Soviet era, even if they were good for you, and how ppl got shot for not doing these things or sent to Siberia where the sun shines 24/7. It wasn't like in a free society where you go to the tanning salon on your own and get skin cancer 'cause that's your free will. I mean, as David Cross says, you "literally" don't get it.

[–]Syn_Splendidus 2 points3 points ago

Well I feel less witty after coming here to say "oh really, did capitalism brighten their days that much?"...

[–]UTC_Hellgate 329 points330 points ago

I like that this title seems to suggest that the Soviets somehow blocked out the sun. Perhaps the Iron Curtain was more literal than I've been led to believe.

[–]Leninist_Troll 55 points56 points ago

Red Alert

[–]MayorEmanuel 4 points5 points ago

[–]Ironhorn 3 points4 points ago

I fully believe that everyone that could plausibly happen has probably happened at least once, or will happen in the future. That being said, when you think of all the silly-sounding misconceptions people tend to have, I'm sure at least one person has traveled to Europe to go see first the Berlin Wall, and then the Iron Curtain.

[–]kingdamek 234 points235 points ago

These are actually just kids that live so far North that they don't receive enough sunlight during the winter. It still happens, and it has nothing to do with the Soviets.

[–]lasyke3 16 points17 points ago

Yeah but that Lenin picture in the background gives it a nice Soviet Sci-Fi feel.

[–]kabbinet 39 points40 points ago

"Light therapy" Really common in Scandinavia!

[–]OvidNaso 2 points3 points ago

I know we need Vitamin D, but how did people who lived up there do it before electricity?

[–]Darth_Cunt 2 points3 points ago

The same way we dealt with appendicitis before appendectomies.

[–]benderson 2 points3 points ago

With rickets.

[–]mper100 5 points6 points ago

But American redditors man, we have to fuck with them.

[–]tenkei 12 points13 points ago

It has nothing to do with american redditors, just stupid redditors.

[–]Ironhorn 16 points17 points ago

I'd say "ignorant redditors". I wouldn't consider someone stupid for not knowing about ultraviolent treatment.

[–]Pull_your_socks_up 70 points71 points ago

I have seen this picture in a Soviet magazine in the 80s.

The original does not have the Lenin portrait, i guess someone shopped it to make the picture look "more communist".

[–]fennekeg 10 points11 points ago

similar pictures (the same?) were in national geographic

[–]catchthewheel 114 points115 points ago

Once the USSR collapsed, Novosibirsk started getting 15 hours of sunlight a day, of course.

[–]Calibas 21 points22 points ago

Don't be ridiculous, everybody knows this is because communism leads to vitamin D deficiency.

[–]Nickdanger3rdEye 2 points3 points ago

Some say there is no such thing as coincidence, but that was a huge coincidence.

[–]Bunchofbees 31 points32 points ago

We did that in kingergarten around 1994-95, in Russia.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]HerrUggla 2 points3 points ago

I too had to do this in kindergarten. It wasn't very long, about 20 minutes once or twice a week. This was in St Petersburg which isn't very far up north I don't think this is that common in the rest of the world as people in this thread suggest. I've lived for the past 15 years in northern Sweden and no one even heard about this. So it is not common in Scandinavia at least.

[–]teeohdeedee123 91 points92 points ago

How has this not been the cover for a prog-rock concept album yet?

[–]homergonerson 89 points90 points ago

[–]imaketrollfaces 21 points22 points ago

How did you find it so quickly?

[–]homergonerson 27 points28 points ago

Tineye reverse image search brought it up.

[–]jjbowman12 5 points6 points ago

Any good?

[–]homergonerson 4 points5 points ago

Pretty bitchin in my mind, preview of the songs can be found here

[–]jjbowman12 2 points3 points ago

I'll check em out

[–]Rollingsound514 15 points16 points ago

Vitamin D from UVB rays is critical in kids to help them from developing rickets. This type of exposure and or vitamin D supplementation should be done TODAY in northern latitudes. We've been conditioned by dermatologists to fear the sun but we need exposure to produce this essential hormone. If you live in Canada and you don't supplement there's a good chance you're deficient. The jury is still out but I'm slowly becoming convinced that this deficiency can be linked to auto immune disease like MS.

IF YOU LIVE IN CANADA GET YOUR VIT D LEVELS TESTED. YOU'RE MORE THAN LIKELY DEFICIENT AND NEED TO SUPPLEMENT.

[–]Mrs_Queequeg 2 points3 points ago

How much do you need? Could you take it in pill form, or does it have to be from the sun?

[–]urban_hermit 8 points9 points ago

This is from National Geographic. I remember seeing it there.

[–]BrizzleShawini 2 points3 points ago

I have also seen this picture in a National Geographic. Remember to quote sources, people!

[–]Tabdelineated 20 points21 points ago

Add some lasers, some dubstep, and baby, we've got a rave going!

[–]grokins 7 points8 points ago

Pretty sure they are being bombarded with gama radiation in order to create communist superheroes.

[–]Dovesongz 17 points18 points ago

I had to watch a movie in middle school that had a scene like this...the kids lived on Venus or some shit and the sun came out for ten minutes once a year.

[–]ImNotGoodInEnglish 16 points17 points ago

where the sun is only visible for one hour every seven years.

Complete thing here

[–]Dovesongz 2 points3 points ago

Indeed. Sorry, I haven't read it in years.

[–]MastersInDisasters 2 points3 points ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Summer_in_a_Day

TIL Ray Bradbury died during the transit of Venus across the Sun.

[–]thehumannapkin 19 points20 points ago

"All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury. I remember watching it on Laserdisc for some reason in 7th grade. In 2002, mind you.

[–]Dovesongz 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. Does't this remind you of that?

[–]erik718 6 points7 points ago

"I've had it up to HERE with these rickets!!!"

[–]Bro_Hawkins 3 points4 points ago

Have you ever seen the sun set at 3pm?

[–]slimmtl 11 points12 points ago

[–]Oatsoap 6 points7 points ago

Teach me your ways

[–]Unshavenhelga 6 points7 points ago

Or, these are kids in Siberia, who are treating seasonal affective disorder.

[–]Legio_X 3 points4 points ago

I didn't know that the Soviets blocked the sun. Are you sure you're not thinking of the machines from the Matrix?

[–]bitwolfy 3 points4 points ago

I knew that the Soviet weather control machine is real. Either that, or communism causes thick overcast.

[–]cosworth99 3 points4 points ago

I had ultraviolence treatments. Soft Soviets.

[–]KazMcDemon 3 points4 points ago

Fuckin' awesome! Looks like a still to a David Lynch film or something.

[–]JCAPS766 3 points4 points ago

the conditions that make this neccesary have not changed since soviet times...

Russia is still North

[–]smellyboner 1 point2 points ago

Shoveljerk FTW!

[–]I_am_Ivan 3 points4 points ago

Siberia doesn't get much sunlight. This has nothing to do with communism. If anything, it shows that the Soviet government actually managed to do something good once in a while.

[–]akuzin 5 points6 points ago

Well I grew up in the Soviet Union. What can I say, this is just retarded. Good title you little karma seeker.

[–]MT_Flesch 8 points9 points ago

and today in the USA, we pay for the priviledge

[–]Cheesejaguar 9 points10 points ago

Or in California we can just go outside

[–]MT_Flesch 0 points1 point ago

hence the reason for these

[–]Cheesejaguar 3 points4 points ago

Those are for people who want to be orange, not for people who want vitamin D or a light tan.

[–]DiogenesHoSinopeus 5 points6 points ago

I've lived further up north than most of Russia (above the Arctic circle) and most of my family still lives there. I currently live at an latitude of 61º and I've never heard of this. :o

Not saying it isn't real...but it certainly isn't necessary from where I come from. Black people need/should take supplements of D up here though...

That light looks scary...

[–]krokee64 2 points3 points ago

Because those were dark times indeed . . .

[–]Spoon_With_Wizard 2 points3 points ago

Damn, The good old days in kindergarden..

[–]lkj309 2 points3 points ago

Plenty of places in Northern Europe that do this.

[–]Go0s3 0 points1 point ago

As someone that was born in the USSR, I can honestly say this is the first I've heard of this.

[–]shumilli 0 points1 point ago

The reason we had those, is that when child gets sick all the bacteria had to be liquidated, so other children won't get sick too and this light was supposed to do the trick. These were only applied in the the institutions where people had to share one room, like hospitals or child camps. So basically grown ups sometimes had to go through this procedure as well.

[–]RoaEdgrr 2 points3 points ago

This pic would make a badass album cover.

[–]Sommerfaq 0 points1 point ago

My entire ancestry lived in the Soviet Union, this is bullshit.

[–]gargantuan 3 points4 points ago

Bullshit. This is only for remote Arctic areas not for the whole Soviet Union.

[–]imaketrollfaces 7 points8 points ago

This is a photograph from Pedobear's treasury.

[–]jeaton[S] 39 points40 points ago

[–]imaketrollfaces 3 points4 points ago

You're awesome. Thanks.

[–]Jesusthecarpenter 3 points4 points ago

Wtf is that you think sovietsblocked the sun.

[–]CJRYAN1212 3 points4 points ago

Am I the only one who's seen this on here before? Like, a hella long time ago?

[–]vengeful_hamster 4 points5 points ago

I saw this one earlier today off a link from another post

[–]DeadStillWalk 3 points4 points ago

There have been other versions of this, but not this specific one. Still pretty cool though.

[–]CJRYAN1212 1 point2 points ago

I saw this specific one. Whatever, being on the front page means more people who haven't seen it have now.

[–]thecityboy 2 points3 points ago

During the Soviet Reddit era, children had to undergo ultraviolet treatment to make up for the lack of sunlight.

[–]mrharmony 1 point2 points ago

During the Soviet Era?

This post should be deleted and the submitter banned for being a fucking retard.

[–]thisguynamedjoe 1 point2 points ago

Six different kinds of creepy.

[–]AliasUndercover 1 point2 points ago

The best picture of Soviet-era children I have ever seen.

[–]z3bruh 0 points1 point ago

OG tanning salons

[–]Big_Daddy_Diarrhea 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure this picture is from a movie..

[–]digger_ex_pat 2 points3 points ago

The was a scifi short story about this. I don't remember the name, but it involved people who live on an other planet where is rained every day except one day a year and the children had to be exposed to sunlamps to avoid weak bones.

[–]pig_killer 2 points3 points ago

"All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury.

[–]IAMAPhotographer 1 point2 points ago

That picture would make an awesome glow in the dark T-shirt.

[–]niekdejong 0 points1 point ago

snookie loook-alike

[–]SirPlus 1 point2 points ago

They also did this to kids in the UK in the 60s. I should know - I was one of them.

[–]Dunking_Machine 0 points1 point ago

Onward, warriors of the Monolith. Avenge your fallen brothers. Blessed, as they are in their eternal union with the Monolith. Bring death to those who spurn the holy power of the Monolith.

[–]jtylerroth -1 points0 points ago

In Soviet Russia, sun hide from you!

[–]southfloridajoe -1 points0 points ago

Damn commies blocked out the sun!

[–]ML4 0 points1 point ago

Omg I just had a very disturbing flashback.

[–]TheMediumPanda -1 points0 points ago

Poor wording dude. So, the sun didn't appear so often over Russia back then?

[–]Genuinefake1 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of insidious

[–]juma606 0 points1 point ago

And the treatment only works in the dark?

[–]Layze 1 point2 points ago

It's to prevent rickets

[–]uncanned2na 0 points1 point ago

Sad.... Same thing at University of Colorado...

[–]YouSmellOfButterfly 1 point2 points ago

They still do this today, this is a modern procedure.

[–]NoMoreFinalsPlease -2 points-1 points ago

Yes! But in the Soviet Union it was free! Imagine how much it would cost in the US

[–]catfaise 0 points1 point ago

I like how they're in their skivvies but still wearing shoes..

are the girls wearing fascinators?

[–]KirillM 1 point2 points ago

I've had this done. But I don't remember it looking so green and creepy. Propaganda I guess.

[–]Oznog99 0 points1 point ago

That's not a sunlamp, that's the Loc-Nar!

[–]H_war 0 points1 point ago

Come to Norway in the autumn. 20 days of constant rain, one day of sun, and here we go again.

[–]Joedang100 1 point2 points ago

This is to make up for a lack of vitamin D. They don't get enough sunlight up there, which your body needs to make vitamin D. It's a pretty reasonable solution.

[–]Mrs_Queequeg 0 points1 point ago

Everyone knows they blocked out the sun, that's how Mr. Burns got the idea!

[–]gattofila 0 points1 point ago

Grow lamps for kids.

[–]StimmeAusDemKissen 0 points1 point ago

That's right. We don't need you capitalist sun. Our children survive on artificial UV light and Lenin.

[–]brobt1 1 point2 points ago

reminds me of "All Summer In a Day" they never see the sun so all the kids have to go by these sun lamps before school. sorry but this is the best pic i could find.

[–]Sw1tch0 1 point2 points ago

Hah. I think all of reddit needs this

[–]lexissopro 0 points1 point ago

[–]isawwhatyoudid 0 points1 point ago

I remember when this was in National Geographic... I'm still haunted by it

[–]LBORBAH 1 point2 points ago

That was because of the Iron curtain it stopped all the sunlight.

[–]needmorebooks 0 points1 point ago

The Earth King has invited you to Lake Laogai

[–]ThresherGDI 1 point2 points ago

Well, that's just creepy as fuck.

[–]Boatkicker 0 points1 point ago

Seems odd to just have them standing there staring at the sun-substitute. Can't they play while receiving their vitamin D?

[–]pdmcmahon 0 points1 point ago

They also had to wear some fucked up underwear.

[–]uhrovaltter 1 point2 points ago

Alaskan here. I sit in front of a sunbox in the mornings during the winter.

[–]mrBigBoi 0 points1 point ago

I had the ultraviolet treatment - it was just sitting infront of this lamp that beamed you with heat for 30 mins.

[–]supercarpathian 0 points1 point ago

Douchebag sun can't angle itself towards those kids ? That fuck.

[–]djcuisine 0 points1 point ago

wait, is this pic real?

[–]surename 0 points1 point ago

that picture of lenin on the wall.... wow, just wow. Sick.

[–]thefourthhouse 0 points1 point ago

I'm gonna need this.

[–]ThomasTShiftlet 0 points1 point ago

Lots of NatGeo posts today

[–]dahhpoiii 0 points1 point ago

It's sunny, bloody warm and humid all year round where I live. It sure is fucking depressing.

[–]UCFirefly 0 points1 point ago

In Soviet Russia, the tanning salon comes after you!

[–]Notherland 0 points1 point ago

yep, they still do make you walk around a uv lamp in the winter.

[–]pietro187 0 points1 point ago

I have the national geographic this photo comes from. Now I feel really old.

[–]IdidpoopedYOUrpants 0 points1 point ago

Cancer.

[–]fuzzylynx 0 points1 point ago

For those of us that live in the Pacific Northwest ... we still do that :|

I have a sunlamp that I use every day, even in the summer. Never enough sunlight.

[–]Britannica 0 points1 point ago

We need this in Portland, Oregon.

[–]diphiminaids 0 points1 point ago

Please explain how the "Soviet Era" affected the sun.

[–]kingofworms86 0 points1 point ago

I'm in Miami. Still depressed.

[–]NeonPringles 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of a Ray Bradbury (R.I.P) story. All Summer in a Day was the title if I'm not mistaken.

[–]b_runt 0 points1 point ago

That's why federal law dictates Canadian milk is enriched with vitamin D.

[–]awesomeme99 1 point2 points ago

Here, want to borrow some of Texas' sunlight? THERE'S PLENTY OF HEATSTROKES TO GO AROUND

[–]gmitio 1 point2 points ago

Guess they've never heard of vitamin D supplements...

[–]Iamadinocopter 0 points1 point ago

This post again?

[–]Siberian_644 1 point2 points ago

Im in Omsk, Siberia and here around 250 sunny days in year

[–]oculairus 0 points1 point ago

Isn't this part of an Aphex Twin advertisement?

[–]aussiegreenie 0 points1 point ago

Even in Australia it is fairly common for new babies.

[–]Pull_your_socks_up 1 point2 points ago

Do not let yourselves be fooled, this is a picture from MIB training grounds.
