[–]chicknsammich 4 points5 points ago

What's up with the lady growing a hand on the left side?

[–]OceanHamster 0 points1 point ago

Thank you so much for pointing that out!

[–]Oppfinnar-Jocke 0 points1 point ago

"Yesh!"

[–]hateswomen 0 points1 point ago

Is that not Sean Connery?

[–]Link_to_spacedicks 41 points42 points ago

All he needs is a neat trenchcoat and he'll look just like the kid at my school that nobody talks to.

[–]jesusinabottle 71 points72 points ago

There's a guy that wears a fedora at my University. And he has two cards stuck in it. Like he's this hard ass anime character that throws cards and shits and kills people. But he's not a hard ass anime character, at all. He's just some socially awkward fat guy.

Also, he wears a keychain that has AT LEAST 50 keys on it. You can here him jingling from a mile away, and I'm not exaggerating, AT LEAST 50 GODDAMN KEYS. They take up the majority of his thigh space (which is quite large) and extend slightly below the knee. Who needs that many keys dude?

He's also in anime club.

Great, now I feel like a judgmental asshole.

[–]Sy87 51 points52 points ago

Great, now I feel like a judgmental asshole.

Upvote for admitting we have a problem.

[–]thisiszackary 20 points21 points ago

Wait...do you go to UL? If so, I've seen that dude everywhere!

[–]jesusinabottle 19 points20 points ago

UL BRO!

[–]5-Panel-Hype-Beast 7 points8 points ago

Wait. University of Louisville? Or do I have the wrong UL?

[–]jesusinabottle 7 points8 points ago

Wrong UL. University of Louisiana at Lafayette. They just like to call it "University of Louisiana", because they have an inferiority complex about LSU.

[–]Wbran 4 points5 points ago

And here I thought I found someone from the University of Limerick, Ireland.

[–]5-Panel-Hype-Beast 3 points4 points ago

:( I'm kind of disappointed now. I wanted to see this guy hahaha

[–]99TA 5 points6 points ago

Maybe he is a superintendent or janitor.

[–]jesusinabottle 6 points7 points ago

Why is the superintendent or janitor in anime club?

[–]99TA 4 points5 points ago

I mean outside of the school. He gets off of work, puts on his tacky hat and goes to further his education.

[–]jesusinabottle 1 point2 points ago

Perhaps.

[–]hockal00gy 2 points3 points ago

Because they like anime.

[–]KampfyChair 1 point2 points ago

Because he likes anime?

[–]HunterDreadnought 3 points4 points ago

He may have murdered a janitor.

[–]jesusinabottle 8 points9 points ago

...with the cards in his hat. Shit, I've underestimated him.

[–]teaprincess 2 points3 points ago

In sixth form college (I guess that's like senior high) there was a dude who wore a tight-fitting black t-shirt (not the type that's supposed to be tight-fitting) with a nerdy slogan on, and baggy jeans with a wolf tail pinned to the back.

I began actively avoiding him after he asked if I'd rather fuck a werewolf or a vampire, before adding that he'd prefer the werewolf no matter what form it was in. Yup.

[–]four_arms 0 points1 point ago

I've seen a fedora wearing fat guy at my university too. He always has sunglasses on because he means business.

[–]roidsrus 22 points23 points ago

[–]jeremyrs 9 points10 points ago

No really, ask your grandpa, can I have his hand me downs?

[–]JeremyJustin 7 points8 points ago

sigh Okay. I'll watch it again. No escape.

[–]gyro12 105 points106 points ago

Still reeling from that post you made to /r/malefasionadvice a month ago?

It was just a vest, man ...

[–]professor_derpy 46 points47 points ago

Neigh

[–]Damaband41 107 points108 points ago

In MFA's defense, that vest didn't look that good, and he responded to everything with "Neigh."

[–]Basmustquitatart 114 points115 points ago

Seems like they gave you actual advice instead of jerking you off.

Fuck them right?

[–]ByJiminy 11 points12 points ago

What part of OP's post indicates an attitude of "Fuck you"? The part where he self-deprecatingly cited his grandma as a good source of fashion advice, or the part with SpongeBob making a face?

[–]shiken 5 points6 points ago

Read OP's other posts in the comments section. Came trolling, got actual help, talks shit about /r/MFA. Real class act.

[–]foetusofexcellence 6 points7 points ago

So much lol.

[–]roidsrus 0 points1 point ago

Well, to the OP, I suggest you go with a black or gray horse since it matches the vest better

[–]roidsrus 85 points86 points ago

jdbee is awesome, and there's a few others, but a lot of folks on /r/malefashionadvice have no idea of what they're talking about, and a lot of them are complete assholes (and these two qualities are not mutually exclusive). And then there's that whole thing with a huge subset of the subreddit looking the same. Take everything you hear on there, like every other subreddit, with a grain of salt.

[–]Behindtheline 11 points12 points ago

Disby adds a nice view for younger MFA'ers

[–]Swagasaki 8 points9 points ago

He's so hot.

[–]Behindtheline 3 points4 points ago

Most guys on MFA are pretty good looking.

[–]avksx 12 points13 points ago

I'm uglier than Medusa fucking the Minotaur.

[–]Sypike 23 points24 points ago

I went on that subbreddit ready to transform into a new man, but I left a cold shell, resigned to never be fashionable...

[–]roidsrus 52 points53 points ago

You can still be fashionable. The most important thing is to get clothes that fit. Most men think they're a size or two more than they are. I did. You can measure yourself and compare with sizes listed by retailers. A t-shirt and jeans can be fashionable if they fit properly. That and avoid short-sleeve button-up shirts and light-wash blue jeans (these are two things with which MFA will agree), and you'll be fucking fine.

[–]klinesmoker 4 points5 points ago

The advice on short sleeves here is pretty good. A simple fashion tip for any man wanting to have nearly the same effect and still look good:

Roll up your fucking long sleeve button-up. You'll feel more badass and look far better for it.

[–]theEndisBlah 3 points4 points ago

as a tailor, I can confirm this is true... skinny people sound surprised when you tell them their chest measure thinking they are bigger than that, and fat folk don't like hearing they have a 44" waist. they delude themselves into thinking they have a 40" waist (although they do have 40" trousers. few people actually wear their trousers on their waistline.

[–]NeedAWittyName 7 points8 points ago

But I love short-sleeve button ups :(

[–]foetusofexcellence 56 points57 points ago

Wear long sleeves and roll them up.

[–]farmthis 3 points4 points ago

Yes. This.

damn. I didn't think I'd have an opinion on this stuff, but there it is.

[–]NeedAWittyName 3 points4 points ago

Noted...

[–]roidsrus 22 points23 points ago

Then make sure they fit.

[–]avksx 12 points13 points ago

I'm going to disagree with roidsrus. whenever you hear anyone say "Don't do this", it should be read as "Don't do this unless you actually know what you're doing."

It is possible to look good in short sleeves, but it's not easy.

[–]roidsrus 10 points11 points ago

I said don't do it because the guy admitted he didn't know what he was doing. When he knows enough to pull it off, he'll know what to wear. With that said, if short-sleeve button-up shirts were eliminated from existence, it wouldn't be much of a loss.

[–]Stankia 3 points4 points ago

Are you Charlie Sheen? Hold on a second, are you the crazy actor in two and a half men? Oh, Ok, in that case you got no right to wear short-sleeve button ups EVER again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39n3veMkuxM

[–]NeoxGG 2 points3 points ago

Go ahead and wear them.. I, for myself, won't judge you and people with enough self esteem won't either.

You don't have to be a trendsetter. If you feel comfortable, you'll look comfortable and that's good.

[–]factoid_ 1 point2 points ago

Then wear them and don't give a fuck what other people think. The main problem with short sleeve button-ups is that the sleeves are usually baggy and poof out. Get a smaller size or one with a narrower cut of sleeve.

[–]ihatewomen1925 3 points4 points ago

Why not short sleeve button ups when it's hot out?

[–]foetusofexcellence 41 points42 points ago

Because you'll look like the pedo IT guy who works at the middle school.

[–]ihatewomen1925 2 points3 points ago

Well, that's specific. Did someone in a short sleeved button up do something to you? Show me on this doll where he touched you.

[–]foetusofexcellence 7 points8 points ago

Na, there was just a creepy IT guy at my middle school that wore yellow short sleeve shirts and had a Freddy Mercury moustache.

It's never a good look.

[–]roidsrus 15 points16 points ago

To me they're kind of like this bastard shirt. They're by no means professional--I think wearing them in a professional setting makes you look like a used-car dealer. They can be worn casually, maybe, if they fit and you have a slim athletic build. That's the key. And finding ones that fit can be difficult.

When it's hot out and you're dressing casually, I prefer to wear a plain t-shirt, polo shirt, henley, or a long sleeve button-up and roll the sleeves. In a business setting, roll the sleeves, and properly. Here's a video on how to do it. While I was looking for that video, I came across one done by a man who works at a menswear shop. His tie length was awful. Make sure your tie ends at around the middle of your belt. AskAndyAboutClothes is a great resource for menswear and high quality shoes.

[–]ihatewomen1925 5 points6 points ago

Thanks for actually answering the question (not sarcastic). So in a business setting or at least semiformal setting, you'd still wear a long sleeved button up even of it's 115o out? I am actually asking because my husband is like my personal Ken doll (he likes it) and I don't want to send him off in the world looking badly.

[–]roidsrus 6 points7 points ago

I would absolutely still wear long sleeves. You can get different weaves for the shirt that are suitable for different temperatures.

Since you mention the heat, I'm going to assume you live in a warmer climate. One of the best things I've done with regard to clothes is to start buying wool socks. For the summer they're incredible because they're way better at absorbing moisture and wicking it away than cotton is. If you get a thin wool dress sock, it can be very cool, and you'll avoid blisters because your feet stay dry.

[–]ihatewomen1925 2 points3 points ago

Interesting tip, seems very counterintuitive

[–]roidsrus 0 points1 point ago

Here's some more information on wool. You can google around and find more, I'm sure, but I'd never go back to cotton.

[–]workingalot 8 points9 points ago

Because you'll look like Dwight.

[–]Rustysporkman 7 points8 points ago

Because you can get a long-sleeve one and roll up the sleeves on it. Looks so much better.

[–]ihatewomen1925 1 point2 points ago

I don't understand the difference.

[–]Rustysporkman 7 points8 points ago

With short-sleeve button ups, oftentimes you'll have the sleeves really big and poofy, which serves to make your arms appear smaller. There's also a stigma against them because it's associated with IT guys and the like.

Long-sleeve button ups with the sleeves rolled up, on the other hand, will invariably conform to the size of your arm. This helps make your arm appear, if not bigger, then just more proportioned to the rest of your body. It also adds a level of uniqueness to your look, since there are a few different methods for rolling sleeves, and it's usually never perfectly mirrored on each arm.

Hope this helps!

[–]ihatewomen1925 1 point2 points ago

That makes sense, thanks

[–]KnightBlue 1 point2 points ago

Then wear a T-Shirt?

[–]ihatewomen1925 -1 points0 points ago

*To work or a job interview

[–]roidsrus 4 points5 points ago

They're absolutely not appropriate for job interviews. If it's a casual enough interview for a short sleeve button up shirt, then it's casual enough for a polo shirt. If you're not confident that it is, then you shouldn't be wearing the short sleeve button up shirt.

[–]ihatewomen1925 0 points1 point ago

But why are they bad is what I'm asking? It looks immature I guess? Like school uniforms? I'm very confused.

[–]cake_in_the_rain 0 points1 point ago

In the magical land of mfa short sleeve button ups are a big no-no. In the real world however, they can be pulled off easily. A "street wear" look might work, however you run the risk of looking childish.

[–]mrfogg 1 point2 points ago

In theory there isn't anything wrong with them, but in real life they almost never look right. You can pull it off if it fits well and you have an athletic build (ie: Daniel Craig), but for the vast majority of situations a long-sleeved button up with the sleeves rolled up looks much better.

[–]el_guapo_taco 0 points1 point ago

Oh god.. short sleeve button-ups are all I wear... I... I never knew!

To be clear, are we talking about short-sleeve dress shirts, in which case I would agree, or are we talking about all short-sleeve button-ups..? If the latter, it seems I am ridiculously non-fashionable.

[–]jaydee_says 0 points1 point ago

Maybe take a look at Ben Sherman and reconsider your short-sleeve stigma.

http://www.bensherman.com/us/shirts?cat=311

[–]roidsrus 0 points1 point ago

I take back everything I said before. Those look GORGEOUS.

[–]bluejayguy26 1 point2 points ago

What if I'm fat?

[–]roidsrus 1 point2 points ago

Having clothes that don't fit will make you seem fatter.

[–]upturn 24 points25 points ago

You don't go to /r/malefashionadvice for the advice. You go to /r/malefashionadvice because you enjoy the idea of reading American Psycho as a serial.

[–]boot20 5 points6 points ago

Holy shit, you just blew my fucking mind...that is EXACTLY what I've always thought....

Is that bone?

[–]virtu333 2 points3 points ago

Where's he get such god damn good taste?

[–]Negro_Napoleon 5 points6 points ago

Fit > everything else

[–]OrangeAppeal 2 points3 points ago

dappered.com

[–]bornes 1 point2 points ago

Might I suggest /r/frugalmalefasion ?

[–]FluffyLion 0 points1 point ago

They don't provide fashion advice, they just post good deals or how to save money on fashion.

[–]Poop_Land_420 16 points17 points ago

A lot of the basics of how to dress are on MFA for people who have no idea where to start. Other than that, MFA is extremely entry level fashion.

[–]Swagasaki 58 points59 points ago

That's the fucking point.

[–]avksx 14 points15 points ago

The problem is, a lot of people who come seeking advice aren't willing to compromise or step outside their comfort zone. That's fine, but then outsiders come see it and interpret it as something that it isn't. The uniform isn't suggested because we want you to look like a clone. It's suggested because it's not a far cry from what most men already wear, and it's really hard to fuck up.

Every time I give advice it's me saying "this is what will make you look great", and then slowly downgrading it to accomodate their budget and their desires, AND THATS FINE. Most people who come to us don't want to be designer models, they want to spend a couple hundred bucks and not look like stacked shit. Saying "MFA is low level fashion" ignores the whole premise of it.

[–]roidsrus 1 point2 points ago

I agree. I think if people can take away how things should fit, and some quality brands, that's fine, but then you've got the hivemind telling you precisely how to dress, and some assclowns on there dressing up as goth-ninjas and calling it high-fashion---it can distort your perspective some.

[–]Poop_Land_420 7 points8 points ago

I have seen maybe 1-2 goth-ninjas on MFA, all of which were shitty attempts. The thing I can't stand about MFA is how it leans toward dad-core.

[–]shiken 2 points3 points ago

Dad-core... that's my new favorite fashion word.

[–]suubz 1 point2 points ago

What exactly is your definition of dad-core? Look at the top of WAYWT for last month, and tell me there's more than 3 or 4 people who fit into "dad-core." And /u/sultanblender doesn't count, he's our resident dad-core pro.

[–]i_did_not_enjoy_that 31 points32 points ago

And then after realizing you posted on /r/malefashionadvice, you only cried for 20 minutes

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]DustyShane 29 points30 points ago

Looks like someone has never seen an actual hipster.

[–]RUPTURED_ASSHOLE 8 points9 points ago

Hipster has varying meaning these days.

[–]DustyShane 13 points14 points ago

I've seen people use that word instead of "original", I think it has lost it's meaning like "faggot" and "retard".

[–]RUPTURED_ASSHOLE 5 points6 points ago

That's literally ironic.

[–]DustyShane 1 point2 points ago

Yes.

[–]Poop_Land_420 0 points1 point ago

You probably dress like shit.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]is_actually_a_doctor 0 points1 point ago

Me too. It seems like the whole motif is "wear something that looks questionably tacky but be totally serious about it".

[–]owlrafter 4 points5 points ago

Well in their defense they tend to find masks tacky

[–]Arjofski 31 points32 points ago

I'll have you know you are using this meme wrong and you should have been crying for 20 minutes.

[–]BaconCanada 16 points17 points ago

I actually like this use a lot better. It's still in the spirit of the meme and allows for much more diverse situations with less time/humor decay.

[–]i_play_trombone 17 points18 points ago

ITT: A lot of people who don't understand the point of MFA.

If you use it for obtaining knowledge on the basics and how clothes are supposed to fit, you will dress better. Fashionably. In any style. I don't even get where the MFA hate comes from. The point of it is to look fashionable. Cargo shorts are not. White socks are not.

Of course you have to lurk a bit and see who actually knows their stuff - that comes with every subreddit i think.

And the style that is promoted most in MFA will always be the most popular there because it looks the best fashionably.

[–]Pantzzzzless 7 points8 points ago

If you post horse masks, your gonna have a bad time.

http://www.reddit.com/user/chutupandtakemykarma/submitted/

[–]SwellFellow 6 points7 points ago

I love that nobody even mentioned the horse mask

[–]maycut 2 points3 points ago

They probably just assumed that he was wearing the horse mask to mask his identity, I have seen it before from people who weren't trolling.

[–]roidsrus 0 points1 point ago

If I could have things my way, the whole place would be wearing them.

[–]LazierThanYOU 3 points4 points ago

My grandma always called me a movie star. I wish she had more influence

[–]mrspacepanda 3 points4 points ago

Take my upvotes. All of 'em. My grandfather was almost my father (metaphorically)

[–]borisroson 6 points7 points ago

CAN SOMEONE USE THIS CUNTING MEME PROPERLY !?!??!????

[–]Gikidari 10 points11 points ago

Today I learned vagina is now a verb.

[–]jrh1196 9 points10 points ago

It's a participial adjective.

edit: possibly just an adjective, not sure.

[–]Gikidari 1 point2 points ago

Dammit you're right.

[–]Simba7 0 points1 point ago

Can you cunt about it already? Sheesh!

[–]borisroson 3 points4 points ago

sometimes fucking just doesn't cut it.

[–]Jingr 2 points3 points ago

Sometimes fucking just doesn't cunt it.

[–]MissDana 16 points17 points ago

that subreddit is a terrible place

[–]link_yourself_smart 16 points17 points ago

MFA got me off white socks and living has been a richer experience.

[–]OliveDrabCup 35 points36 points ago

That subreddit has the friendliest, most helpful people on Reddit in my opinion. I think the only reason a lot of reddior's say it's bad is because they don't agree with the style they show there. Or they can't take even the slightest amount of criticism.

I don't see how someone could say its terrible. It's by far the best subreddit I have ever seen, in my opinion.

[–]Metal_Lyrics 2 points3 points ago

I agree. MFA is the most enjoyable I visit on a day-to-day basis.

[–]Tesro -2 points-1 points ago

I agree to a point. In the random posts there can be quite a few snobs who think any deviation from their ideas of what looks good is a travesty. I saw one guy rant and rave about how the poster's jeans had two breaks in them. Other people were saying it wasn't a big deal, but he was hell bent on convincing people it was an extreme fashion crime. However, two things I took from MFA that I believe is their intent are to always buy clothes that fit properly, to include getting them tailored if needed, and to stick with classic styles that always look good.

[–]jdbee 0 points1 point ago

two things I took from MFA that I believe is their intent are to always buy clothes that fit properly, to include getting them tailored if needed, and to stick with classic styles that always look good.

If you took those two things away (and know how to apply them - e.g., what a good fit looks like, and what classic styles work for you), then you're an MFA success story. There's a lot of other stuff on MFA, but those two things are the absolute core.

[–]roidsrus 0 points1 point ago

Commenting on the break in pants isn't what I'd consider snobbery, since it's an easy fix. Was he telling him that they were too long and to cuff them or tailor them to fix the break? To me that's a part of fit.

[–]OliveDrabCup 0 points1 point ago

Right, I totally agree with you here. Some people dont know really what they are talking about but insist that they are correct.

[–]new_to_the_game 0 points1 point ago

friendly, but they try to make everyone look like a douche

[–]OliveDrabCup 0 points1 point ago

I disagree, its a fashion forum, so you may think being fashionable ties in with being douchey, but I don't think so :)

[–]Broken_S_Key 0 points1 point ago

I wouldnt go as far as to say the nicest, sometimes you get a dickbag or two.

/r/longboarding now theres a place where people say 'fuck it, youre having fun. spread the stoke and stay steezy' along with some advice or whatever. until someone posts something about helmets, then everyone flips shit.

[–]foresthillian 43 points44 points ago

Why?

[–]IrishPrime 1 point2 points ago

Because they have terrible taste and try to make other people match it.

[–]waffels 62 points63 points ago

Try to make others...? They only critique people that post their wardobe and ask for opinions. Most of the time the opinions vary enough and work with what the person is trying to achieve.

On top of that, the people on that subreddit are pretty helpful and will give alternatives based on price and location.

If your beef is that they try to push people to mold into a specific look... then failed to realize the key word in the subreddits name, 'fashion' They are judging based on what is in fashion currently.

[–]hooplah 36 points37 points ago

More like, MFA suggests staples that will nearly always look universally flattering on a beginner who is just learning the ropes. It may look "safe," but it's important to have a good foundation/understanding before venturing out and experimenting with other looks.

[–]Quaxi 9 points10 points ago

Exactly. People like to humor MFA over the OCBD, the 511's and the CDB, but recommendations like that is to create a safe wardrobe for most people that you can work from. You can't nail the goth ninja, the pink bow tie or whatever if you know shit about fashion.

People also need to understand that critique isn't personal. "You look good!" is completely worthless advice, because you havn't learned anything. If they say that it's too big, the wrong color or whatever, it's because they want to help you, not because they hate you.

[–]Tesro 1 point2 points ago

I think it is funny people latch on to the Clarks Desert Boot thing. There is a reason they are so widely recommended on MFA. They are an inexpensive way to help your look grow out of the high school and college frat phase. I wear the other MFA favorite, Wolverine 1,000 Mile boots, but those are nearly $400. Clarks are $60, look good and will last a long time if taken care of properly.

[–]jdbee 2 points3 points ago

What's always funny to me is that I actually see them honestly recommended about once every two weeks. The number of stupid desert boot inside jokes outnumbers the actual recommendations about 40:1.

[–]suubz 0 points1 point ago

I feel like all the jokes (annoying as they are) are what made the number of CDB recommendations subside.

When I started lurking around the time Veroz left, they were getting mentioned in every thread.

[–]Pokesteve 11 points12 points ago

Can you provide specific examples?

[–]BornOn4thOfJuly 13 points14 points ago

Eager to see how you dress, or what you consider well dressed for everyday wear (no models please).

[–]CBoidy 8 points9 points ago

You know not of what you speak.

[–]red788 2 points3 points ago

It's an advice forum. They're giving advice. You may not agree with the advice they give, but its intention is to help the people who want to help themselves. And the taste of most MFAers is the most basic male fashion there is...if you think they have terrible taste then I'd really like to see what you consider to be good taste.

[–]DeckersDelight -2 points-1 points ago

Not true at all.

[–]plazmamuffin -3 points-2 points ago

Post a pic of yourself in your everyday clothes and ask how you look. A good amount of the commenters will be snooty losers who wish for everyone to look like a banker.

[–]BrendanTheNavigator 27 points28 points ago

Some of them, maybe. Before I read MFA I used to wear t shirts, jeans, and sneakers. Now I wear t shirts, jeans, and sneakers. The difference being that I wear ones that actually fit me and look good on me.

You don't have to change your style, just make sure that the clothes you do wear fit you. That, more than anything, is what will make you look good.

[–]foresthillian 49 points50 points ago

The problem with that is that ever since I subscribed to it, my everyday clothes are more akin to what you see there. While I've never posted there myself, I enjoy their tips and feel like my wardrobe has greatly improved since I started browsing it. Honestly, most people who post there are looking for advice and I feel like people there are helpful and offer good tips.

[–]waffels 32 points33 points ago

I've been reading the subreddit for the past week and I agree with you. There is the occasional circlejerk about how American Eagle is for children, or why boot cut jeans are the devil, but for the most part they offer great advice, tips, and will usually give newbies ideas in a price range.

"I see you mentioned JCPenny in your post, here are some shirts from them which are solid"

I think people get pissed when they suddenly realize a huge majority of their wardrobe isn't in fashion (baggie jeans, sneakers, graphic t-shirt, hoodie) and take it personally.

[–]Basmustquitatart 17 points18 points ago

They will criticize but they wont insult. If you came to MFA expecting everyone to fall in love with your quirky sense of style (Neckbeard, Graphic T, Fedora, and everything else high fashion) then you are mistaken.

MFA is great if you're willing to give it a chance.

[–]cheesehelmet 1 point2 points ago

If you don't want advice then you shouldn't ask for advice on a forum such as malefashionadvice.

[–]athrix -5 points-4 points ago

There's nothing wrong with learning how to dress for certain situations. Being critiqued on my shorts and t-shirts is a little much.

[–]murphylawson 23 points24 points ago

If you post shorts and a T-shirt there expecting praise, what are you doing? That's like posting a ham sandwich to foodporn.

[–]Ninjabattyshogun -1 points0 points ago

Well, generally speaking shorts and a t-shirt look bad... Most tshirts are graphic, which is childish and most shorts are overlong cargo shorts that do nothing for you.

[–]slazar4 3 points4 points ago

If you aren't wearing CDBs, GTFO

[–]Accidentus 3 points4 points ago

Strands yo

[–]Jayross -1 points0 points ago

strands, yolo

[–]Damaband41 8 points9 points ago

I'm actually wearing them right now. And in MFA's defense, they are damn good-looking boots (that go well with practically anything).

[–]famblycat33 11 points12 points ago

They're good quality. They're cheap. They go with anything. They look good (yes, this one is subjective). Fuck MFA for recommending them, right?

They're recommended often, yeah. But mostly it's to n00bs who ask for advice, because they're hard to get wrong. Once you know what you're doing, you can branch out. Everyone has to start somewhere though, and a lot of the so-called hive-mind recommendations are for solid basics which are easy to get right and which can serve as your foundation as you find your style.

I've got a long way to go, but over the past year or so I've gotten great advice on that sub. YMMV.

I think a fundamental mental error people make when criticizing MFA for being "all the same" is forgetting that MFA is a very tiny, tiny, part of the population (of the world) as a whole. Every newbie who says "hey I need shoes for college, what do?" gets told to get CDBs. I have CDBs. I go to a big university in Canada. Want to know how many people I see wearing them (in weather for them)? None. Chukkas as a whole? I've seen like one guy wearing chukkas, and I do look at shoes. What's that mean? It means that no matter how identical MFA users become, they will still be very rare as a whole when outside of MFA (real life). CDBs and Timex Weekenders are actually very rare to see in the wild, despite them being circlejerked and recommended all the time to MFA newbies.

tl;dr Even if everyone on MFA looked alike they'd still all look unique in real life because MFA is a tiny portion of the population at large. In other words, unless you meet another MFA user in real life nobody will recognize you as wearing "the uniform" and nobody will think you look "the same."

[–]StriveMinded 0 points1 point ago

I don't know why you're being downvoted, that is a very true statement. Those are generally the first shoes recommended to everyone.

[–]hooplah 10 points11 points ago

Because they're versatile.

[–]avksx 2 points3 points ago

Because they're cheap, reliable and not terrible looking.

They're not the epitome of class, but it's better than a white sneaker and it doesn't cost $200.

[–]VerneAsimov 2 points3 points ago

I don't even know what the hell those are.

[–]jsoftz 0 points1 point ago

Honestly, most of r/malefashion advice would profit greatly from just watching the videos/following Put This On (www.putthison.com).

Hard Mode: www.styleforum.net. Bespoke bug has bit me bad.

BOO YA GRANDMA

[–]Creepyteacher -3 points-2 points ago

Posted picture once hoping for advice. Got called an ugly prick by multiple neckbeards. Dat feel when forced to delete a post due to how mean people are.

[–]rootb33r 4 points5 points ago

Sorry that happened. I've never seen anyone outright call someone "ugly," but I have seen some mean and pointless posts.

There's also quite a tendency for people to scream "read the sidebar!" whenever someone new posts pictures with obvious problems. I personally don't mind it, but some people feel as though their time is wasted when the OP could have done some reading up front to fix the obvious problems.

Cheers man.

[–]boot20 -1 points0 points ago

Don't feel bad, they are the fashion neck beards and their circlejerk has extended to this thread apparently.

[–]lolDirtyMouth 2 points3 points ago

i read this in kips voice from napoleon dynamite.
