Prior to this I have never heard of this Artist. I did not encounter him in any of my studies. Perhaps if this is assumed known references you might feel free to share with us how this is an assumed reference. What makes this so mainstream as to be a known reference?

The mere fact alone that Scarlett Johansson played The Girl with a pearl earring in a very well promoted movie makes it that all Redditors know about the painting.

But all kidding aside, if you did not encounter Vermeer in "any of your (supposedly many, many) studies", you must not have a very broad interest, nor a very keen mind. But you're forgiven, a little Google revealed The Girl with a Pearl Earring is only the 6th most famous painting in the world. Realistically, you could not have known about it.
