No, he was not sent to a camp, because he tried to marry a Jewish woman. He made the Nazi-party believe that neither Irene Eckler nor him knew about Irene Eckler's Jewish background, so he got out free in a first trial. He only later was sent to a camp, because they continued to lead the relationship in a second trial.

August Landmesser a worker at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, who refused to perform the Nazi salute at the launch of the naval training vessel Horst Wessel on 13 June 1936. While he eventually did die in a military penal unit, it was not due to this incident.

Is there any proof for this sort of thing ever actually happening?

I mean, of course I have heard the story many times like everyone else "you could be shot just for not saluting at a rally", but, it does sound like propaganda, or at least the kind of thing the Allies would say back home just as an extreme example of the fact that free thought was actively stifled in Nazi Germany.

I mean, I have heard that similar story of "The first one to stop applauding got shot!" applied to Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini, Hitler and Mao over the course of my life, all of whom happen to have been enemies of my country - so I suspect it might be a bit of a myth. (I'm sure I have most recently heard it in relation to Kim Jong Il/Un too)

Does anyone have any information on this ever actually happening, that's not just clear propaganda? Or someone being killed for not saluting at a rally? I'd be interested to see it. I'm sure there are LOTS of instances recorded of protesters being killed, people being killed for actually speaking out, shouting out, trying to disrupt speeches or rallies, things like that; people are occasionally thrown out and roughed up a bit (or tazered) by OUR governments today for that sort of thing still, so I'm sure it happened a lot more in a militaristic dictatorship. But I mean specifically about someone being killed for just not saluting at a rally? Or any proof of the old 'dont stop clapping first' story?

I've never imagined Hitler's home rule to be particularly brutal. We all that 1984 starises Stalin's USSR; the hate speech, the propaganda, manipulation, faux-communism and the killing of God so you could 'elect' a new one.

But Hitler doesn't seem to have that: the German people weren't tortured, maimed, brutalised, sent on-mass to gulags. No, I think he saw those of who weren't 'defective' as part of the master race.
