Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Behold the consequences of post-haste.

The story and more awesome pics.

[–]harrydickinson 2 points3 points ago

Wow, very cool. Good contribution

Actually, IUPAC adopted "sulfur" in 1990 as did RSC in 1992. Presently, the spelling of sulphur is technically incorrect.

[–]CMcG14 1 point2 points ago

A rare opportunity for OP - two possible correct spellings and they messed it all up.

I read condensed butthole surfer. I was wondering why the pic didnt make sense.

[–]gizzledos 12 points13 points ago

What are these?. Maybe I'm dumb, but it looks like a pipe and a 55-gallon drum.

[–]shakerLife 11 points12 points ago

Slag barrel

[–]mnnmnmnnm 8 points9 points ago

Volcano plumbing. The inside of the world is a series of tubes which move all the lava around. How else would it get up the volcanoes?

[–]gizzledos 3 points4 points ago

Ok, other comments were making it seem like this was a natural occurrence.

[–]N0IDED 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, a days worth of work mining that shit only warrants $13 US?

[–]dirt410 0 points1 point ago

You must be smarter than I am. At first glance I though "is that a pirate ship"?

[–]joebooty 6 points7 points ago

If unprocessed, that is one of the eeriest nature shots I have ever seen.

[–]Diatom67 3 points4 points ago

Imagine a world soaked in the stuff.

It is unprocessed. It actually looks like that. There was a National Geographic article on it a while ago, iirc.

I work at a sulphur handling facility at a sour gas plant in Alberta. Sulphur does burn blue just like that (though sulphur fires are something we try very hard to avoid) and it emits SO2, which is very toxic, smells terrible, and burns your nose/eyes. You actually usually taste it before you smell it. When sulphur is in it's molten form (melts at about 110 C) it is reddish, but gets darker when it gets really hot (above 170 C). It's neat stuff and there is a lot of it. We produce 1200 tonnes a day.

[–]diccface 3 points4 points ago

reminds me of iridium blight in BL2 !

[–]ElAccountoDeBasura 2 points3 points ago

Really thought this said "condensed surfer burns blue" and was all WTF

[–]deti 2 points3 points ago

it's kawah ijen, not Ljen

[–]Rossoccer44 0 points1 point ago

I read "condescending sulfer" at first. I thought, "yeah, sulfer is an asshole, it deserves to burn in a volcano."

[–]goldenrod 0 points1 point ago

That looks amazing. I'd love to see that in person.

[–]Th3P4tm4n 0 points1 point ago

Wow - that would be a sight to see.

[–]benbus 0 points1 point ago

probably smelled like super poo getting that shot but holy hell that is beautiful

[–]JimJimmery 0 points1 point ago

Must smell great up in that piece.

[–]jzzanthapuss 1 point2 points ago

i bet that smells terrible. really pretty shot, though

[–]TerdSandwich 0 points1 point ago

It looks like a cosmic storm or some crazy intergalactic space jizz.

[–]Anticonn 0 points1 point ago

I bet that smells just delightful.

[–]Emblematic 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who saw Australia?

[–]barfretchpuke 0 points1 point ago

Brimstone is an alternative name for sulfur.

[–]Ripper62 0 points1 point ago

Source?

[–]aderpgio 1 point2 points ago

It's Kawah Ijen. :)

[–]Pangael 0 points1 point ago

Whew. I first read that as 'surfer'. I wondered how they had condensed him. It had to be a him because it burned blue, right?

[–]cassancellor 0 points1 point ago

and smells like a huge fart.

[–]xkleenexk 0 points1 point ago

Man, humans that chanced upon this kind of shit must have been in awe. Probably generated some pretty crazy creation stories seeing shit like this happen.

[–]trashacount12345 0 points1 point ago

The fallen star!

[–]papayukero 0 points1 point ago

oh indonesia my country

[–]xSt0nedxwaLrusx 0 points1 point ago

did you fast travel to the eridium blight?

[–]PixelPizza -1 points0 points ago

slag deals extra damage to enemies.

[–]Relph 0 points1 point ago

I visited Kawah Ijen last year, it was a beautiful place, but the stench was almost unbearable and what these guys go through for such little money is amazing.

Twice a day men from the local village walk about 3km up the volcano where they then climb down the dodgiest steep path.. its not a pathway its more like rubble.. they then add about 80kg to 2 baskets strapped to a piece of wood which they balance on their shoulders. They all had raw scars on each shoulder.

After this they climb back up the rubbly path and down the volcano.. all for minimal money. A lot of them were wearing flipflops and weren't wearing masks to protect them from the fumes or stench.

I still wonder how much money the guy who pays them gets for selling the sulphur on.
