[–]thepulloutmethod 18 points19 points ago

What do you think about the fact that you used to be regarded as a ruthless death-dealing machine, but now people are starting to see you as an oversized chicken?

[–]IAMAVelociraptorAMA 18 points19 points ago

I don't get shot at on sight anymore. HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAKES ME FEEL

[–]alienbringer 1 point2 points ago

How many times a day does someone say to you "Clever Girl"?

[–]thepulloutmethod 0 points1 point ago

Excellent point.

[–]vellyr 7 points8 points ago

Damn that kitten is fast. The dog barely gets his head off the ground before the kitten starts booping him.

[–]ky321 603 points604 points ago

Repost or not, this is the first time i've seen a dog pet a cat.

[–]MoparDog 149 points150 points ago

My dogs pet each other. It's hilarious.

[–]fiz1point5 46 points47 points ago

This is like the opposite of a situation in which I had a Maine Coon (big breed) cat, and my girlfriend had a chihuahua. The cat was actually larger and when the rodent/dog would come inside, she'd jump up and down in front of my cat, but Hannah would just gently push the dog's head down with her paw. It was the cutest thing ever.

[–]Himynameis444 36 points37 points ago

rodent/dog

haha

[–]catasaurus_rex 6 points7 points ago

My big cat does that to my little cat when she annoys him...which is often.

[–]pharaoh_bob 2 points3 points ago

I want a Maine coon so bad man.

[–]fiz1point5 2 points3 points ago

If you didn't know, I feel compelled to warn you: they are extremely talkative and affectionate. This is usually a good thing, but they can make it a bit difficult to leave the house at times.

[–]xXNickelbackRulezXx 8 points9 points ago

My dog pets me.

[–]cupaloop 8 points9 points ago

How is life in Soviet Russia?

[–]SkepticalGerm 5 points6 points ago

So does my lab. He has claws and it hurts...he's not a very good petter. It's cute when they try, though.

[–]GovmentTookMaBaby 37 points38 points ago

It's also the first time I've seen a dog say with one look "Nope not doin it, this shit was not in my contract"

[–]dontgiveadamn 16 points17 points ago

It looks like he shakes his head as he walks away.

[–]Awesomeade 24 points25 points ago

My dog tries to pet our cats, but he has horrible balance and just ends up stepping on them. The cats do not take kindly.

[–]McPantaloons 13 points14 points ago

Maybe your dog has excellent balance and hates cats.

[–]fishingoneuropa 9 points10 points ago

Such a sweet dog, he finally gave up.

[–]uptwolait 8 points9 points ago

Repost or not, this is the first time I've seen a dog shake his head saying "nope!" as he walks away.

[–]robvas 0 points1 point ago

That means 'Hey, do that again' in dog.

[–]bigred326 1 point2 points ago

I wish my dog knew how to make my other pets feel inferior.

[–]OsamaMKH 1 point2 points ago

Hence the "That bitch is crazy, man"

[–]gigglestick 1 point2 points ago

I saw it more as a pat than a pet. Like he was giving the cat an "aww, isn't that cute, it thinks it's tough."

[–]squarewulf 0 points1 point ago

Its the first time I've seen a gif mascaraing as a jpg.

[–]interbreddit 135 points136 points ago

"I'M BITING YOUR NECK. YOUR NECK!"

"yeah, alright sport."

[–]Izwe 269 points270 points ago

Did that dog just shake his head before walking off-camera?

[–]Cocomaan 69 points70 points ago

I saw that too, fucking hilarious.

[–]SureSignOfAGoodRhyme 35 points36 points ago

This slightly confirms my belief that dogs are humans that have gone through training.. and every once in a while, they slip up and show a little human side

[–]andybobz 10 points11 points ago

I had that thought too.. Until I saw my dog eating cat poop. Then I realized she has never been a human. Ever.

[–]Aratar2011 1 point2 points ago

But that's part of the training. Nearly everything now tastes delicious!

[–]Izwe 7 points8 points ago

You should read Fluke by James Herbert

[–]ShuffleandTruffle 1 point2 points ago

And The Rats... just because its good.

[–]EnlightenedNarwhal 0 points1 point ago

If you look below there's an explanation as to why this happens.

[–]S_F_A 9 points10 points ago

I've had Goldens and Labs my whole life. They sometimes wave their heads back and forth in excitement. Still funny though.

[–]ThunderingNuisance 25 points26 points ago

That was the point of the title.

[–]PayphonesareObsolete 4 points5 points ago

He even looked into the camera as he did it. Genius!

[–]cantthinkofusername2 -1 points0 points ago

actually he was about to shake his whole body because his ear was itchy

[–]heroman44 96 points97 points ago

I love this gif. I like at the end how the dog kinda shakes his head like "Thats just unbelievable"

[–]Paid_for_WinRar 244 points245 points ago

[–]Daibhead 10 points11 points ago

There was a golden retriever in my neighbourhood when I was a kid, he'd show up at the soccer field every so often. That was when you'd have to get up on a wall or somewhere safe. He'd basically get a hold of whoever he could and dry hump the fuck out of them. I saw him get a guy on all fours once, it was awkward to watch.

[–]Team_Khalifa 44 points45 points ago

My chocolate labs beg to differ.

[–]bstampl1 43 points44 points ago

Chocolate labs are delicious, but my meth lab is orgasmic

[–]seitgeist 7 points8 points ago

So does our Irish Setter.

[–]biggbuckz 6 points7 points ago

So does our Old English Sheepdog.

[–]Wimblestill 8 points9 points ago

Someone already did it.

[–]random_potatoes 2 points3 points ago

I prefer Old Spice, myself.

[–]Dave_the_Adventurer 2 points3 points ago

So does my elastic battle-hound.

[–]Buhnanah 1 point2 points ago

My dog, that I have no idea what breed it is even though I've had her for 8 years, begs to differ.

[–]dog_hair_dinner 21 points22 points ago

Everyone I've known who's had a golden has spent thousands to tens of thousands on surgeries and their dogs die super-early. This is the only reason I cannot allow myself to have one. The heartbreak would be devastating.

[–]complex_reduction 44 points45 points ago

This can be said about MANY popular breeds of dog.

I mean I don't know jack shit about dogs, but every fucking comment I see about (insert dog breed here) is like "They are so cute, too bad their breeding has completely fucked them physically and they will die screaming and you will cry forever".

Really puts me off getting a dog.

[–]brawr 75 points76 points ago

Get a mutt. They're just as loveable, and they don't have any of the crippling genetic abnormalities that purebreds have!

Plus mutts have that adorable scruffy factor.

[–]Im_being_harassed 29 points30 points ago

This, please. People focus so much on the breed, but there's tons of cute lovable dogs in shelters or in the streets who are intelligent, kind and loyal. Please adopt.

Having said that, TIL the word mutt, thanks :)

[–]Mocorn 2 points3 points ago

Sure, but please, don't pick an older dog unless you know what you're doing. We tried that and out of the blue it bit my brother in the face. He's fine, got a cool scar etc but please be careful.

[–]ShorttStuff 7 points8 points ago

You mean don't get ANY dog unless you know what you're doing. Right? :)

[–]Mocorn 3 points4 points ago

Ah, indeed!

[–]manlaw6 4 points5 points ago

THE EARS!

[–]ScotchforBreakfast 2 points3 points ago

Get a Mutt.

You mean a pitt-bull mix? Because that's all I see on my local shelters rescue page.

[–]Lereas 4 points5 points ago

I got a mutt.

My wife wanted an expensive purebred golden, but we rescued a mutt that looked a bit like a black lab.

She was my baby. I never had a dog growing up and I loved her so much.

She cost us 7000 dollars over 2 years with a huge variety of random health problems, and died of bloat before she was 2.

I'd do it all again to have her back, but I no longer have the strong opinion that mutts mean you have less vet issues to deal with.

edit: fixed how long we had her, no idea why I had 4 initially.

[–]Dreadgoat 3 points4 points ago

four years

died of bloat before she was 2

What?

[–]Synackaon 2 points3 points ago

Purebreeds are, on average, more prone to genetic diseases and faults.

That said, it sounds like you got the ass end of statistics. Sorry to hear that.

[–]zBodude 0 points1 point ago

My heart just exploded. <3

[–]muttmonster 0 points1 point ago

Yes get a mutt...

[–]dog_hair_dinner 14 points15 points ago

Really puts me off getting a dog.

I picked up a border collie/lab at a shelter. He was my first foster failure. This guy is a machine. I swear he's the perfect picture of a healthy, athletic dog. He's almost 7 and I swear he'll never slow down. He just seems to get into better and better shape.

He survived adult parvo and was just out of the hosipital when I began fostering, so I saw him at his worst. I've had him a year and a half now and the physical shape this beast has attained in that time is insane. We go biking, but also when he plays in the back yard, he hops on his back legs trying to get the birds in the trees. When he started doing that, he got ABS. When we go biking he does NOT slow down.

I've gone biking with other dogs and they like to take a break once in awhile and chill, then continue, or slow the pace. This guy....full on power speed no matter how far I go. When we get home, he just wants more.

Sure, I'll cry forever at the end, but I don't see this guy suffering for a long time to come.

[–]Lonelobo 11 points12 points ago

When he started doing that, he got ABS.

An anti-lock braking system?

[–]Wimblestill 15 points16 points ago

[–]pnwgirl 3 points4 points ago

Foster failure as in you couldn't let him go? :)

[–]dreamendDischarger 3 points4 points ago

I have a Border/??? (vet thinks she's part golden but we're not sure) mix and she's great! She's around 12 years old now and I'm just not sure what's going to happen with her because she's still as hyper as she was years ago. She has started to experience some joint pain, but we put her on medicine for it and she's feeling a lot better now. She can't run as long as she used to or jump as high for the frisbee, but she's still going strong. We have a fear that her heart will just give out on her while running someday, but no one knows what the future will hold.

This is her, Madison

[–]swagtech 9 points10 points ago

smaller dogs live longer.

[–]cattreeinyoursoul 46 points47 points ago

No. It just seems like longer because they are so annoying.

[–]enjo13 19 points20 points ago

Get a mutt... you can never be sure that a dog will live a long and happy life, but you have a better shot with a mutt:)

[–]MikeRowPhone 36 points37 points ago

We have a mutt but we refer to her as a "limited edition".

[–]Beximus 16 points17 points ago

Mutts the way to go, fuck the pedigree bullshit, its just making our dogs sick.

[–]jonnnyc 6 points7 points ago

FWIW, my golden is going on 14 and has never had serious health problems, other than his joints which are finally starting to fail him.

[–]Steviebee123 5 points6 points ago

I had a golden retriever when I was young that lived to similar age. He was healthy and active even when he got older and had no major problems. Mind you, he was as stupid as a bag of hammers.

[–]jonnnyc 2 points3 points ago

Sounds just like mine. I think stupidity might be the key to longevity.

[–]scumis 0 points1 point ago

i hate this. sorry :( I can not imagine the agony i will go through when i put my best friends down. i tear up just thinking about it. take him for a walk :)

[–]joelseph 5 points6 points ago

People do anything for a pet, regardless of breed.

[–]dog_hair_dinner 6 points7 points ago

It's not so much a question of what I'm willing to do for my pets. One of my pets recently had a costly procedure. I was prepared for the cost. I had saved the money well in advance. I have no regrets.

However the issue is moreso the conscious decision to subject myself to a high risk of suffering by choosing a dog I know will have a high risk of early death or suffering due to poor genetics. This is not something I feel I could go through with where the benefit would be this dog's companionship. I'd rather gamble on a dog that I can have a similar bond with with less a chance of early death.

[–]nerfedpanda 3 points4 points ago

As someone who owns a golden retreiver puppy, this terrifies me and makes me very sad :(

[–]namegoeswhere 4 points5 points ago

My buddy lived to the ripe old age of 15. Even when he developed a tumor on his jaw (that eventually lead to his passing) our vet was amazed at how healthy he was otherwise. No surgeries, and aside from heartworm and later in life, joint health pills, he wasn't ever on medication. God damn, he was the best damn dog for which a boy could ask.

But you're right, otherwise. The heartbreak is pretty intense. It's been over a year and I still forget that he won't be standing in the doorway with a pillow in his mouth when I get home.

[–]MyPackage 2 points3 points ago

I had two goldens growing up. They lived to be 12 and 13 neither one ever needed surgery for anything.

[–]forshow 7 points8 points ago

Pure breeds tend to have more health problems. Edit: This isn't the best Source. , but purebreds are more than likely to have inbreeding which eventually leads to more health problems. Look, I have a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and I love that thing to death but I know it has potential health problems because it is a purebred and also because it is a CKCS. If you want to deny this feel free, but it is true.

[–]heeh 4 points5 points ago

Good breeders try to breed OUT the health problems, though... hence why there's health screenings for things like their hips and other genetic issues. But popular breeds like Golden Retrievers have a lot of backyard breeders that don't test their dogs, that don't have them involved in athletics or showing to prove their worth as a breeding specimen, that will breed their pet store puppy because hey, this is a purebred, the guy down the street has another purebred he got from a newspaper ad, let's get some easy puppies. It really does depend on the lineage. Popular breeds seem to have more health problems because they have their histories tracked, and people backyard breed them willy-nilly. Mutts can have just as many health problems as purebreds, it's just a matter of what the parents will pass down.

[–]biggbuckz 4 points5 points ago

Source? Pure breeds just have statistics behind their problems, because, you know, they have a lot of history. With a mixed, half the time you don't even know what it is, so you can very well say, "Oh... he has a chance of having hip problems when he gets older!"

I know a lot of mutts that have had everything from breathing problems, to skin conditions, to arthritis.

[–]Abedeus 3 points4 points ago

Exactly. You can't really "track" mutts, because you'd have to have a category for every single breed combo. And if a mutt has 4 different breeds in its history or more, it's almost impossible.

[–]Undoxxable 4 points5 points ago

Inbreeding, its a matter of genetics.

Mutts usually are not inbred. Meaning that they have a less chance of having the recessive genetical diseases.

Seriously, there are breeds where its almost 100% guaranteed that all dogs will have a certain genetic disease, like german sheperds with arthritis.

[–]x15percent 3 points4 points ago

Seriously, there are breeds where its almost 100% guaranteed that all dogs will have a certain genetic disease, like german sheperds with arthritis.

I looked up arthritis statistics for GSDs, because that percentage didn't sound right to me. From what I've read, it's closer to 20%. I'm not disagreeing that some breeds are nearly guaranteed to have certain problems, but I don't think German Shepherds was the perfect example.

[–]acconartist 1 point2 points ago

I am a little disturbed at the username in this conversation...

[–]ZaeronS 1 point2 points ago

I'll add our golden to the list. He cost us thousands of dollars in ear surgeries.

That said, he lived to 14 - very, VERY long for a golden. We kept him for a year longer than we should have, though. He was patient, and kind, and never complained - but he was in a ton of pain and had a lot of trouble walking for the last year.

That said, best dog in the world for a family. He bonded with my sister and I, was nothing but gentle to us. The only bad thing was that he had trouble when we would rough-house with our friends - the only time he ever acted aggressive was when we were playing with friends.

I would recommend a golden to anyone with enough money to afford a vet bill and a young family. The golden will put up with ANYTHING from his family, and protect y'all from whatever.

[–]medusozoan 1 point2 points ago

If you ever want a Golden but this is turning you off, and you have the space and patience, look into a field line bred for working, not show lines bred for the ring. Working lines tend to be healthier, because you can't have a working dog with trumped up hips and knees and hearts that give out in a few years. Some of the more plagued breeds have some of the largest gene pools, like Goldens; it's easy to find healthy field-bred Goldens from responsible breeders. And, personally, I think they're much better looking, too.

[–]feenfader 0 points1 point ago

Get a cat. 50% of them have no soul. Look it up!

[–]wskrs 2 points3 points ago

My Bernese Mountain Dog might have something to say about that...

[–]uptwolait 1 point2 points ago

Shadow!

He was just too old.

[–]r0b0c0d 1 point2 points ago

We used to have one around the office. I think the deal is that they're fine for their owners, but this thing didn't give a shit about anyone unless you had food.

Typical dog behavior, I suppose one might say, but I mean.. most dogs I've met eventually get friendly when they see you almost every day. I'm not really a fan of the breed. Maybe it's an intelligence thing? Dunno..

/settling in to weather the storm due to golden hate.

[–]madplayshd 0 points1 point ago

Big Danes.. The first time I saw one I was walking through the park and spotted this enourmous, pony like thing from a distance, almost reaching a girls shoulder. Then I came closer and realized that the dog was standing in a ditch.

"Oh man! This passive as hell dog is doing absolutely nothing and is like 5x my size, BETTER FUCK SHIT UP." -Cat logic.

[–]dog_hair_dinner 36 points37 points ago

Some cats just need to make sure everyone is put in place. They are masters of mental intimidation in the animal world.

For example, last night, my lab/boder collie seemed to have his prey drive triggered by my flighty cat and he bolted after her. Out of nowhere, my other cat, Mme.LeBitchCat flies in and appears in front of my dog. She backs him into the bathroom with her menacing "imma fuck you up" bitch stance. The dog immediately reverse-walks into the bathroom and sits there. He doesn't get up for a few minutes even after she leaves.

This cat doesn't even have front claws and can't balance for shit when she's walking on things. She keeps falling off. But somehow she can intimidate any animal she wants.

[–]heeh 13 points14 points ago

Yep. I've got a 90lb Pitbull mix and a 120lb sheepdog... both are terrified of my 10lb cat. The dogs will be happy and having fun and playing in the backyard, cat's sitting in the bush and decides they're having too much fun, so he takes off after the sheepdog, claws out, poor dog's fur goes everywhere. Cat randomly decides he doesn't like that the dog walks by him in the kitchen, he takes a swipe of fur off the dog's butt. I'll feed the dogs dinner, the cat will just sit beside the bowl and groom himself so they won't come near it. Sometimes he'll be laying by the dogs and start playing with their paw, and they'll poke him back, but you can see they're anxious about whether or not they're going to get beat up.. cat moves too fast and they bolt.

Those poor, stupid dogs have such a complex.

[–]scumis 5 points6 points ago

70+lb doberman 150ish lb great dane vs my 8 lb cat. guess who is the winner.

no guessing is needed, we all know

[–]wskrs 9 points10 points ago

Yeah, agreed. I have one cat, Oliver, that will wake up from a sound sleep, walk across the room where the dog is laying down, and smack him across the face... just because. It's the way of the animal kingdom (ever notice how cats boss people around too?) Bastards.

[–]cattreeinyoursoul 10 points11 points ago

It's the attitude.

[–]reddit_chaos 4 points5 points ago

it's the cattitude.

[–]Apokalyps 10 points11 points ago

Well, dog's weapon of choice is a bite which van be lethal and a cat's weapon of choice is claws which can do harm but not kill. Ofcourse you don't want to kill your roommate so the cat is in the advantage here.

[–]deadpxl 1 point2 points ago

Patronising Dog is patronising.

[–]tombone66 5 points6 points ago

Wait, are "patronizing" and "patronising" the same word?

[–]Deslyn 52 points53 points ago

I think "patronising" has a slightly stronger air of condescension because it's British.

[–]Stiggy1605 12 points13 points ago

Patronizing is the Americanised spelling of patronising. It's like color and colour.

[–]keepclearofdoors 22 points23 points ago

[–]rumbledethumps6 5 points6 points ago

This is why I'm not a cat person.

[–]WillowLeaf 4 points5 points ago

The cat was trying to assert his/her dominance by biting the dog's neck. I guess he saw the dog patting his head as a threat after that.

Not sure how many people know this, but one of the main reason cats and dogs ended up not liking one another is when a dog wags his tail it means he is in a happy, playful mood, most likely wants to play. However when a cat wags his tail, it means he is very pissed and shit is about to go down. So when a dog walks up, tail wagging, like "Hey little kitty! Let's play!", the cat is already seeing the wagging tail and going into, "Bitch you don't want none!" mode.

But in this video, it appears the cat is trying to play with the dog, when cats play, they like to pretend they are hunting and going for the throat. Once that position is achieved by either cat in a play session, the losing cat usually just submits ad stops moving. You can test this with your own cat by using your hand to simulate a claw, ( cats don't like when you do the claw move in front of their face, they will either attack it or know you are trying to play, caution here )then when they play try to gently, but quickly go for his throat with the area between your thumb and first finger. If you gain this position without giving up from all the scratches the cat might give you, you'll see he stops moving, at least until you remove your hand from that area.

EDIT - to emphasize gently
