It's worth looking it up a bit more. Turns out the "binder of women" was assembled by someone else, I think an advocacy group. It was assembled before he came to power, and then handed to him. But the phrase, oh, the phrase is hanging him from a tree.

personally i think it is being over used but just the way he phrased his thought made it sound like women are objects. i dont know if he feels that way but he is against lily ledbetter act (or i think he is he wont come out and say it) and anti contraception so maybe he does think of women as objects and this phrase is just easy to make fun of.

as a woman watching the debate it made me cringe, the whole 'can we get some women in here'. my view might be biased but i think it would have been better if he went with 'were no women qualified enough to make it on this panel?'

i dont think it is fair to choose a woman for a job just because she is a woman, its not fair to men. it just seemed like he was more concerned with how his all men panel looked rather making sure all qualified applicants were reviewed.

Nothing in itself, but the question he was answering was asking how they're going to deal with pay inequality for women...

And he responded with a weird story about how he noticed no women were applying for his office, so he had his recruiters go find some (when, actually it was an outside party that came to them about the issue, but anyway...) at which point he had a binder full of women he could choose from.

Basically, he gave one story about his own office seeking out women because none had applied, without any plan for enforcing pay equality with employers other than himself. And then brought up the notion that employers need to be more flexible with women employees, so, for instance, they can be home in time to take their kids to school (because dads don't need flexibility in their workplaces for such things, only women)... but again, gave no plan for seeing that employers become more flexible in any way.

There was a runner named Fox (can't recall his first name) from Canada; he was a single-leg amputee from the hip who did a cross-country run for cancer awareness/research because he had cancer himself and during the treatment process learned there was almost no funding for research, and was a bit upsetting the issue wasn't really that widely considered; everyone just kinda thought "it's being handled" and he helped shine the light on the fact that there could be some much more.

So, he did a run across Canada and despite the odds not only did he keep running as long as he physically could, he raised millions of dollars in pledges and donations to research groups. The "one legged fox joke" goes like this:

How do you kill a one-legged fox?

You make it run across Canada.

The cancer caught up with him about 2/3 of the way through the journey and despite his will to go on, it wasn't enough and he died due to complications with his lungs from his cancer. He's practically a national hero for Canada.

I'd say it's almost more fair to rip on this than say, his healthcare plan. For healthcare, he seems to be saying that he would rather see every state champion their own Romneycare, rather than centralize it into one big Obamacare for everybody.

In this case though - it's not directly the words that make it a powerful clip, it's the undertones. It comes across as a fundamental misunderstanding of women in the country. It bring out his traditional upbringing, and his Mormon roots where women are the home-makers and men are the breadwinners, and that he really never understood the feminist movement (and doesn't care to). It's a bit abstract, but he comes across as saying "Men and Women should be equal, but it seems that men are a little more equal than women".

The other part of the problem is by saying "binders full of women", he is talking about something very similar to affirmative action - something generally the GOP has been against. If he were to say "90% out of people who interviewed and are qualified were men, so I hired 9 men and 1 woman" would have spoken to "I hire qualified people, regardless of gender/race/sexuality". Instead, he said "I hired a bunch of men, but then thought 'man, this will look really crappy if they're all men - I better hire some women for appearances'"
