Who's the girl on the left?

[–]Chucklay 35 points36 points ago

Could someone give me the tl;dr version of this whole saga? I missed the beginning of it, and now it's everywhere and I'm a bit lost.

[–]yakityyakblah 137 points138 points ago

Seventh grader is convinced by some guy on the internet to show him her tits on webcam, he takes the photos and posts them online. Everyone at school bullies her over it, she moves schools, new school kids find the pictures. Cops for some reason do fuck all to help her. The girl makes a video on youtube about the whole thing. Later on she kills herself. Due to the video she goes viral and people share it around to raise awareness against bullying.

[–]LetMeGetThisStr8 87 points88 points ago

Seriously...7th grader. Thats 12-13 yrs old. WTF.

[–]yakityyakblah 101 points102 points ago

Exactly, I've been asking it from the start, what the fuck were the police doing? 4chan found this guy (allegedly) in like a week, and the cops accomplished nothing after having like a 2 year head start.

[–]LukaCola 25 points26 points ago

And yet we'd be so quick to jump on this guy, an innocent who could've potentially been ruined.

This is why you don't trust vigilantes.

[–]argues_too_much 11 points12 points ago

Yep. In a related thread in /r/vancouver some guy said he's "not afraid to say this guy should be killed". I replied saying he should get a trial like everyone else. He got downvoted until he deleted his comment. I guess he was afraid to say it when karma became involved.

[–]SuperSaiyanVigoda 3 points4 points ago

Yup, that guy was a douche.

Hopefully he realized how wrong he was and that is why he deleted his comment, but probably not.

[–]facaDe577 3 points4 points ago

well, the guy is still linked heavily to pedophile sites. a miss, yes, but not by much.

[–]jookie123 8 points9 points ago

just to save you the pain...the police don't actually do anything. If the perp isn't standing right there with the evidence in their hands nothing gets done. It took a couple of teenagers on 4 chan less than 10 minutes to find the guy but the police were dumbfounded.

One of my old jobs...guy breaks in and steals a checkbook. Cashes dozens of checks. Uses his driver's license to cash the checks. Guy is actually a former employee. Stores write the DL numbers on many of the checks. Would have taken a cop 15 minutes to make a phone call to the bank and then looked the DL# up to see an id. nope too hard.

[–]LukaCola 8 points9 points ago

RCMP say anonymous didn't get the right person. http://www.theprovince.com/technology/Amanda+Todd+case+Police+distracted+false+information/7399759/story.html

-argues_too_much

I really wouldn't jump on the guy. You can't trust vigilantes to get the right guy. You could be ruining an innocent's life.

[–]llcbdavis 7 points8 points ago

you have to tell your daughters very early: dont show your tits. dont let boys take pictures of you. if he really liked you he wouldnt ask that. and a whole lot more but dont wait til they're in jr high to tell them. hang up your goddamn cell phones and talk to your kids.

[–]BlaydeRunner 9 points10 points ago

Even worse is that this guy is apparently 32 years old.

[–]sin_eater82 19 points20 points ago

Just for the sake of getting things as accurate as possible; The suicide came several years later (she was in high school when she killed herself). And as of the last article I read, there was no indication that the new instances of bullying were related to the photo incident. The article said that the new round of bullying started "after an encounter with another girl's boyfriend" -- more news may have been released about that since I last read anything though. Other than that, good tl;dr.

Edit: "several years later" was not the best verbiage. The pictures were taking a couple of years ago, and the guy posted the FB page sometime a year or so ago. None the less, she said she got over that and things got better (although she had to transfer schools). And then a separate round of bullying started. -- I've yet to seen anything that sheds light on whether it was due to the same topic or something else.

[–]omgcrackers 4 points5 points ago

it's worthwhile to think of the negative consequences that can occur from a rather ubiquitous internet request of women to show us their tits. it can completely destroy their lives just to give us that short lived thrill. maybe we should stop asking?

[–]yakityyakblah 11 points12 points ago

At the very least stop screen capping or recording it.

[–]ASupertramp 5 points6 points ago

She was bullied a lot, put a sad video on YouTube about it , and then killed herself.

[–]zmjjmz 443 points444 points ago

Wait, so knowing who a major victim of bullying is and not who a 90s rockstar is makes you 'everything that's wrong with the world'?

[–]mehtorite 209 points210 points ago

you follow current events? you can't enjoy good music!

[–]JackassPenguinass 47 points48 points ago

Especially since Kurt died before many of these teenagers were born...

[–]BroncosRN19 5 points6 points ago

You don't know what was good when I was your age!? YOU ARE WHATS WRONG WITH THE WORLD!!!!!

[–]thomaswagner_91 11 points12 points ago

I think the problem is she is wearing a Nirvana shirt in her profile picture and she doesn't know who Kurt Cobain is.

[–]cornfrontation 7 points8 points ago

Yes, but the thing she was replying to was saying it's a problem to know who Amanda Todd is and not Kurt Cobain.

[–]dragoncore74 25 points26 points ago

Ask /r/imgoingtohellforthis, they love her

[–]MattShea 5 points6 points ago

That's one thing I just couldn't upvote. A young girl killing herself because of bullying is just not funny.

[–]ipoopedinmyshorts 4 points5 points ago

haha this is the only reason I looked at the comments, to see who she was

[–]ahnakel 2 points3 points ago

Kind of curious myself

One is a 15 year old girl, one has been dead for 18 years. He had already been dead 3 years by the time she or people her age were born so this is just stupid.

Also they are both people who were likely depressed, and then killed themselves.

The girl wearing a Nirvana shirt and not knowing who he is, is unbeliably stupid though of course.

[–]speakstupor 562 points563 points ago

I don't think she's stupid for not recognizing a picture of him. But if she is wearing a Nirvana shirt, she should at least recognize the fucking name Cobain.

[–]Chumkil 14 points15 points ago

I am dating myself here, but:

I loved the song "Tall Cool One" by Robert Plant on the Radio. Bought the tape.

Later on the "top 1000 songs of all time" came on the radio. I started taping the top 20 songs. The top song had a bunch of flutes and stuff.

I told my friend that this top song called "Stairway to Heaven" was stupid because it had flutes and that Robert Plant would never sing a song as dumb as that.

Additional, to make it even worse: (For those who don't know, Tall Cool One also has Led Zeppelin samples at the end of it.)

Edit: Fixed the department of redundancy department errors.

[–]Sevsquad 163 points164 points ago

To be honest I didn't know who he was for a long time either, despite liking and actively listening to the band. I just never really looked into them beyond listening to the music, I probably still wouldn't know who he wasn't if I didn't get really into the bands behind the music in high school. I guess what I'm trying to say is not everybody looks too far into the music they're listening to, for me it was because I just borrowed CDs from my dad but now I think it's that you can just get the song on Itunes and not have to think twice about the band itself.

[–]ridik_ulass 83 points84 points ago

"I just never really looked into them beyond listening to the music"

I think he would have appriciated that.

[–]silentnoodles 57 points58 points ago

Goddamn it. Get off my lawn.

[–]Kodyak 33 points34 points ago

It's because some people listen to music, they think, "Oh hey, I really like this song, I want to get more songs like this" So they look up the band and listen to them. I don't think a person should be called stupid or ignorant because they don't know who someone is but enjoys their band's music..

Fucking redditors are always jumping at people even though they're being close-minded assholes who will attack anyone who isn't just like them yet they act superior to the others who do the exact same thing.

[–]SexualPie 3 points4 points ago

Yea exatly this. I listen to and enjoy a lot of bands. But I don't know even 10% of the people in them or even have a chance at recognizing them in real life.

op

[–]ironneko 22 points23 points ago

If you like a band enough to buy a t-shirt, you'd probably know the name of the lead singer at least.

[–]zeppelinfromled 14 points15 points ago

Apparently you have pretty high standards for what's required before you'll drop $5 for a shirt at Target.

[–]_deffer_ 2 points3 points ago

Exactly - she probably bought it for the smiley face, and just thought Nirvana was a state of mind...

[–]cowtow 4 points5 points ago

I don't know - I've seen Nirvana shirts being sold at H&M. It's possible she could've picked the shirt out because she liked the design, and not even known Nirvana from Tommy Hilfiger.

[–]leex0 3 points4 points ago

I own many band shirts, and a lot of them i don't know the names of their members or i wouldn't even recognize them. I think that's ok for a lot of small bands, but for a band as big as Nirvana, you almost have to actively avoid information about Kurt Cobain and his life.

[–]PlethoPappus 129 points130 points ago

So neither she nor you are stupid, just ignorant. Got it.

[–]ProtonMurphy 119 points120 points ago

But let's be real, there are far worse subjects to be ignorant of...

[–]Alexandur 55 points56 points ago

No. Grunge music is literally the epitome of human excellence.

[–]Hounmlayn 20 points21 points ago

How is that ignorant? I knew the name, but never associated it with the face or the band, and same for the other two nouns. They were a triangle that never touches faces in my head for a long time. I liked the band, but hell, some of my favourite bands now, I just don't know the band members names, or what they look like.

In fact, even in the sports I like, they're just people playing it, I don't have a clue who anyone is.

[–]Doshibu 27 points28 points ago

Ignorance is simply a lack of understanding or lack of knowledge.

[–]silenttd 21 points22 points ago

Agreed, I'm 30 and am a big fan of Nirvana. I know what Kurt Cobain looks like because I followed the band and remember when he died. That girl is probably, what, 15-16? There's a lot of bands whose music I like and couldn't tell you a thing about. Kurt died before she was born. He's not exactly an icon to today's teenager's. Plus, its a cool shirt.

[–]Bucket58 12 points13 points ago

A lot of people who are our age (i'm 33) know who John Bonham, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, or Bon Scott were, but they were all dead before most of us were born.

[–]partanimal 2 points3 points ago

Bonham and Bon Scott didn't die until '80; also, just because you (and probably most of your friends because you hang out with similar people) know these musicians, doesn't mean everyone our age does.

I'm 36, and I know everyone you mentioned. My husband, who is 38, would recognize the names Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, but would only recognize certain pictures of them. It just depends on your upbringing, musical preferences, and whether or not we take our music seriously enough to really learn about the musicians we listen to.

Also, and this is really I think the biggest difference ... our generation's parents played music in the house ALL the time. So we heard their music. My peers don't really do that, so their kids don't hear the music their parents like (other than in the car with the ipod hooked up).

[–]Beetso 8 points9 points ago

Bullshit! I was 15 in 1991, and grew up with Nirvana. I sure as fuck knew what Robert Plant, Mick Jagger and the Beatles looked like. If you like a band enough to wear their shirt, you should know at least a minimal amount about them. That girl is a poser. I have no clue who the girl in the picture is...Demi Lovato?

[–]Enchilada_McMustang 5 points6 points ago

You ignored that that person belonged to that band, that makes you ignorant in that matter...

[–]NoCount 3 points4 points ago

Yes, but saying "You're ignorant." and "You're ignorant of this specific fact." are two very different things. It's not like he didn't know that water was wet.

Edit: Fixed typo.

[–]Sevsquad 3 points4 points ago

yeah people learn about what their interested in, if he had been a type of mental illness or a major figure in WWII I would have most certainly known his name and probably how many pairs of socks he owned by the time I was 10. But I didn't get interested in music until I was about 16.

[–]ImSmores 4 points5 points ago

I know I'm not the only one who falls I love with a band puts their albums on shuffle and you couldn't name all the songs but when you hear the beginning you know what's happening. Usually there will be a song that I feel the need to look up the lyrics and that leads to intense research of all things revolving around that band. However I wouldn't be surprised if that girl is wearing that shirt jut to look cool.

[–]BoringUsername1 4 points5 points ago

I find this pretty incredible. As someone who doesn't listen too, nor really has to any serious extent, I don't know how the name Kurt Cobain just wouldn't be recognized. I understand....MAYBE...not recognizing the picture, but the name? Especially since such a big name, Courtney Love, was married to him, and is still alive.

[–]dont_press_ctrl-W 24 points25 points ago

Not necessarily. She may have bought the shirt thinking it was a reference to the yogic concept, unaware that it was a band. She probably wasn't wearing something about Kurt Cobain on purpose.

[–]SollyBoy 6 points7 points ago

This is very yogic. (safe link)

[–]VaginalMeshPatch 8 points9 points ago

are we sure she wasn't trolling that girl who asked who he was?

[–]Confucius_says 9 points10 points ago

not really. a lot of us just listen to music and don't start to follow the band is if it were some kind of religious movement where the singer is some kind of prophet or something...

Getting high and playing guitar doesn't make you a great philosopher or some shit. youre just a stoned guy playing guitar.

[–]Edword23 4 points5 points ago

All I can imagine is Confucius actually saying that last bit...

[–]GabenOnCageAction 6 points7 points ago

It's just that with Nirvana the lead singer is particularly well known and associated with the band, but you're right that it doesn't really matter, but it is a bit out of the ordinary to listen to Nirvana and not know about Cobain.

[–]Katana622 0 points1 point ago

I like music for the way it sounds. I do not care for the names of the artists that make up the band. Now before you down vote that, remember that this was the first reason music was made. To listen to. I don't like it when people think I'm not "worthy" of the music because I don't know the peoples names. The same way I don't like when people dislike music when their only reason is the artists.

For example, I enjoy electronic and dubstep music. My friend thinks dubstep is dumb because it takes no skill to make or a computer can do it. I just like it because I like the drop and wub (the sound.)

[–]bitwize01 2 points3 points ago

well, yes and no. Nirvana was one of those bands that ended up bringing an entirely new genre to vast numbers of people. They vastly affected the music scene of the time, and for years to come. If you're wearing that shirt, you should know the minimum amount of history related, or you're just vapid.

That said, ain't nothin' wrong with liking music for music. But I'm guessing that when you hear a few songs from a band, you don't rush out to buy their apparel, right? I would be surprised if the girl from the pic has even heard a Nirvana song.

[–]commongiga 84 points85 points ago

Meh. No worse than the gaggle of dudes who probably have worn Zeppelin t-shirts who couldn't identify Robert Plant or Jimmy Page by sight.

[–]jumpiz 65 points66 points ago

Or the idiots with the Che Guevara t-shirts when I just tell them I am from the same country as him (Argentina), and they don't even know what I'm talking about or they'll tell me I'm Cuban...

[–]darkpaladin 89 points90 points ago

I always find the commercialization of Che Guevara amusing.

[–]Sevsquad 46 points47 points ago

yeah, not to mention that he's popular among the humanists despite being kind of a horrible person.

[–]JoseFernandes 5 points6 points ago

He had a cool motorcycle though.

[–]woundedgod 5 points6 points ago

Horrible person is incredibly objective. We can talk about Che running a prison and executing political prisoners then we can talk about Batista ordering the execution of political prisoners with American support. Its all on the end of which barrel you stand.

[–]Sevsquad 2 points3 points ago

People executing prisoners without trial is horrible regardless of who backs them.

[–]woundedgod 2 points3 points ago

Che gave them trials, but they were quick military tribunals with no appeals. Which is more than the Batista government gave. Some folks have become brainwashed by Che the revolutionary, others have been brainwashed by Bastista supporting exiles in the US.

Civil war is nasty affair.

[–]zero_hour 4 points5 points ago

That and the way anonymous has adopted Guy Fawkes as their mascot. Has no one read his history?

[–]thatmediaguy 5 points6 points ago

They adopted V as their mascot, most of anonymous is to stupid to know who Guy Fawkes is or that he was a religious nut job trying to overthrow England for the baby Jesus.

*edited for letters and stuff

[–]worksafeharry 5 points6 points ago

Same thing with misfits t-shirts

[–]hopefulharry 12 points13 points ago

I once thought Led Zeppelin was the name of the lead singer, not the band.

[–]guenther_ 18 points19 points ago

Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd were two pretty awesome dudes.

[–]StewieNZ 14 points15 points ago

By the way, which one's Pink?

[–]partanimal 2 points3 points ago

Not sure, but I can tell you the name of the game, boy.

[–]borkborkbork99 3 points4 points ago

He's the one with shaved eyebrows and bloody nipples.

[–]GarnetandBlack 8 points9 points ago

Decent point, but still... it's Cobain. A lot more video/pop references/pictures of Cobain than Page and Plant. Also, she still doesn't know who he is AFTER the name has been said.

[–]Chet_Awesomelad 54 points55 points ago

I wouldn't recognise the members of most bands I enjoy listening to, mainly because I listen to the band for the music, not the people playing it.

[–]Katana622 5 points6 points ago

doh, you said exactly what I said in a comment up there ^ but way shorter.

[–]pezisdead 14 points15 points ago

There's always the chance that she's heard of the concept Nirvana and just liked the image on the shirt...

[–]sheerheartattack 23 points24 points ago

Or it's not her shirt. Or it's a hand-me-down. Or it's a gift. Or it's a shirt she bought for no other reason than she wanted/needed a shirt. Of course, on reddit, a shirt is not an article of clothing, it's apparently a goddamn statement of who you are.

[–]DesireMyFire 11 points12 points ago

Or she likes the band and so bought the shirt... I like a lot of bands and own their shirts but can't name most of the lead singers... Like Daughtry, Meatloaf, Cher, Madonna...

[–]sheerheartattack 10 points11 points ago

but can't name most of the lead singers... Like Daughtry, Meatloaf, Cher, Madonna...

I think I could take a stab at some of those...

[–]krispwnsu 6 points7 points ago

UNBELIABLY!

[–]publius4 31 points32 points ago

Why is she stupid?

I can only name the lead singer of maybe a quarter of the bands I regularly listen to.

[–]YOU_FUCK 45 points46 points ago

Here at reddit we make generalized statements at whim about people we know nothing about based on their knowledge of obscure facts that everyone should know

[–]dirice87 2 points3 points ago

IDK man, i wear a ramones t shirt for a long time as a kid and thought they were just some dirty homeless people.

then again i was poor and wore hand me downs

[–]OmnipotentBagel 2 points3 points ago

You know what's really sad though? She is literally, at that very moment, connected to a device and a service that can identify in mere seconds who that is (particularly once the name was given) and she still doesn't know who he is. That's what irritates me. I don't fault someone for not knowing things, even things that seem like they should be obvious. But when there is ample and easy opportunity to learn the answer to a question and people choose to remain ignorant, that's just plain ridiculous.

[–]me_and_batman 3 points4 points ago

Why is she stupid? Because she didn't recognize the face of the singer from the band on her shirt? Just because you listen to their music doesn't mean you have to know everything about the band man, lighten up. Plus all she did was ask who he is. She can't even ask a damn question without being stupid?

Not everyone is an idiot just for not knowing something.

[–]entent 292 points293 points ago

That's what we used to call a poser.

[–]_______walrus 126 points127 points ago

I haven't heard poser since like sixth grade. We spelled it 'poseur' because we were super fucking cool. /not

[–]havestronaut 51 points52 points ago

That shit was fuckin' French, bro.

Edit: seriously.

[–]manbearpig1204 13 points14 points ago

What a French hipster.

[–]theodrixx 47 points48 points ago

hipsteur

[–]Reesch 4 points5 points ago

niggeur

[–]GrayPenguin 3 points4 points ago

Didn't THPS use poseur? I know there was some game or show that did and thus caused me to spell it that way.

[–]HitlerDidNothingBad 13 points14 points ago

"Oh that shirt? I got it 'cause of the cute smiley face!"

[–]korkyshadow 14 points15 points ago

Haha my favorite past time of high school was to go up to people wearing band t's and ask them to name three of that bands songs (70% of them couldn't).

[–]Doctorderper 78 points79 points ago

I did that too. In hindsight, I looked like a douchebag.

[–]hooplah 16 points17 points ago

When I think about wearing band shirts now as an adult, I'm terrified people will do that to me. There are artists that I love whose albums I always listen to straight through--I wouldn't be able to tell you the names of the songs. I could sing the lyrics or hum the tune, but if you asked me for actual names, I'd be lost.

[–]Doctorderper 3 points4 points ago

I think the reason I went around calling people out on it was because they were acting like Musically Oblivious 8th Grader. They would lie about liking a band, buy their t-shirt from Hot Topic or a similar store, lie and say they have seen the band live several times, and just act like they were better than everyone else about it.

They were being douche bags too. I highly doubt a random stranger will walk up to you on the street, point at your shirt, and demand you name 5 songs. The only way I would ever think someone would do that is if you were to act like a tool.

[–]DeathToPennies 2 points3 points ago

That's because you were.

[–]gaunten 7 points8 points ago

Just an FYI, it's pastime.

[–]Falcorsc2 17 points18 points ago

I know fuck those faggots for wearing a shirt becuase they liked the look of it.

[–]maximumutility 3 points4 points ago

Someone did that to me in highschool. I named three songs and walked away thinking he was a fucking asshole.

[–]Kinch_ 2 points3 points ago

You were that guy...

[–]gracefulzaz 32 points33 points ago

To me it seems that being more concerned about a dead musician than teenage suicide is everything that is wrong with the world...

[–]calllllllback 7 points8 points ago

Yeah, I don't understand the comparison of the main player in a recent news story to Kurt Cobain.

[–]Not_a_blimp 2 points3 points ago

Seriously. How are you "what's wrong with the world" if you don't know who a musician is, but know someone who's been all over the news lately?

[–]scrimsims 19 points20 points ago

I would say people who post photos of people online to mock them are more of a symptom of "everything that's wrong with the world".

She's a fucking kid. Kid's are goofy at that age. She sure as fuck doesn't need to be mocked by thousands of strangers.

[–]filthysize 83 points84 points ago

That original picture is fucking asinine. I would applaud teenagers who know more about current social issues than 90s pop culture icons. They are not what's wrong with this world. Fuck yourself.

[–]10eighty 6 points7 points ago

Well fucking said, have an upvote.

[–]DingoScallion 39 points40 points ago

I'm everything wrong with the world. I am Jack's sarcastic colon.

[–]wahhagoogoo 16 points17 points ago

To be honest I think The OP was stupider than the girls comment, how does not knowing what Kurt Cobain looks like make you "everything wrong with the wold"

[–]Thelazychild 7 points8 points ago

Who is the first one. I actually don't have any idea.

[–]leash1991 13 points14 points ago

can someone please explain to me why so many people continue to put down or make a mockery of amanda todd? yes, shes in the news right now, how does that make you "something wrong with the world" if she is more recent and talked about that kurt?

I dont mean just this post,i mean how people make bleach jokes, call her names, joke about how they are happy she's dead and continue to make fun of her while this poor girl is dead because of bullying

[–]chiodos 2 points3 points ago

Because people are sick and cruel, and fail to see the irony.

[–]johnnynutman 2 points3 points ago

because she made a mistake and then killed herself. everyone else is perfect, therefore they can make fun of her. duh.

who gives a fuck?

The younger generation isn't gonna know all the stuff you know, and they're gonna care about shit you hate, and it's gonna be like that for all of us, ever, from now until the end of humanity. Get used to it, duder.

pic related you're whats wrong with the world http://i.imgur.com/VwPaP.png

[–]IBoldlySayTheObvious 14 points15 points ago

I am apparently everything wrong with the world, according to this.

No, but seriously, I have no fucking clue who that guy is.

[–]theodrixx 11 points12 points ago

Come join me at the tiny plastic table. We have sippy cups.

[–]FIawLess 20 points21 points ago

I think it's more about her wearing a Nirvana shirt and not knowing who Kurt Cobain is, rather than the actual pic posted on fb.

[–]buffalosoldier221 4 points5 points ago

Fuck yeah beefheart.

[–]funyun2 3 points4 points ago

Oh my god. I am just like the girl in the Nirvana shirt. I saw that picture and was like "who the fuck is that guy?" and I'm currently listening to Trout Mask Replica. Granted, I've only been listening to him for a few days now, and I probably would have recognized a different picture of him, but damn...

[–]Zephyrianr 5 points6 points ago

Not knowing who a dead musician is does not make one 'what's wrong with society'. Neither does knowing who an internet-famous girl is.

I'm all for judging people, but this is just stupid.

[–]thebakerman 10 points11 points ago

what a terrible facebook post though. People should be VERY aware of Amanda Todd's death, and I wouldn't expect people that were even her age to know who Kurt Cobain was..

[–]kyerussell 15 points16 points ago

Guys, not only does she not know who he is, but she still doesn't recognise the name after the other girl tells her.

[–]StreakFreeShine 17 points18 points ago

There are some bands a listen to and I don't know the members names.

[–]yrtteterte 12 points13 points ago

And you buy T-Shirts of these bands?

[–]Rain_Seven 14 points15 points ago

I've got a Journey shirt, couldn't tell you a single name of someone from Journey. And I couldn't care less.

[–]Tagichatn 160 points161 points ago

Who gives a shit what band members look like? I don't want to fuck them, I just want to listen to their music.

I have a Gap t-shirt, how come no-one gives me shit for not knowing who the CEO of Gap is?

[–]HopefullyIllRunOutOf 250 points251 points ago

Dawg, you don't know Glenn?

[–]nikkukun 59 points60 points ago

He played bass in Gap, right?

[–]Matt_McSteezy 31 points32 points ago

He's the lead singer! OHMYGOD PEOPLE LIKE YOU FRUSTRATE ME!

[–]GadTheCreator 20 points21 points ago

imho, his work in Banana Republic was the only thing worth listening to.

[–]timothyrds 4 points5 points ago

They totally sold out once he joined though. They were so much better without him.

[–]thrawnie 3 points4 points ago

Pretty much this. Knowing the music makes you a music lover. Knowing the musicians makes you a lover of Trivial Pursuit.

If I admit that I didn't know either person in OP's picture, can I feel superior to them both ? :p

[–]Oneironaut2 16 points17 points ago

I like Nirvana's music, but I wouldn't recognize a picture of Kurt Cobain if you showed it to me.

There are plenty of bands where I don't' even know any of the members' names, yet would still be willing to wear one of their T-shirts.

[–]conspiracy_thug 31 points32 points ago

BUT WHOS THAT GUY!?

[–]ProDrug 28 points29 points ago

  • Went to a show this weekend, saw them, went "Holy shit. It's a band. I thought it was one person!?."

  • Went to see Purity Ring like a month ago. Started talking to the girl working the merch booth about random shit. Later on, see Merch Girl walk on stage and start singing. Merch Girl was 1/2 of Purity Ring....

God, I'm stupid.

[–]AverageToaster 18 points19 points ago

try working security and never knowing whose in the band, boy do they like to let you know who they are despite not having passes. Sorry all you metal heads look the same.

[–]ProDrug 11 points12 points ago

"DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM!? WHO I'M WITH!?"

"No....that's kind of why I'm asking to see your pass...Actually, I feel like we both recognize the constraining factor here but you're really not helping me remedy the matter..."

[–]gemcitytiffany 4 points5 points ago

This happens to me every fucking weekend. And I work at a local bar where there's no reason or way I can know everyone who's going to be playing.

"Hi it's $5 tonight!"

"I'm in the band..."

ಠ_ಠ

[–]mrostate78 3 points4 points ago

I went to a show and the opening act was one guy who later worked the merch booth. I got him to sign the album I bought.

[–]ProDrug 4 points5 points ago

At least you knew who was when he signed it. I spent like 15 minutes shooting the shit with her...and I didn't even buy anything(note this was like pre-show so there wasn't anyone else in line). Thank god I didn't talk about music or god forbid, the band itself.

[–]Doomsayer189 3 points4 points ago

"Yeah, my friend convinced me to come. I don't actually even like this band that much, but he's really into them so whatever, they're not that bad."

"I'm in the band."

...

Just imagine the embarrassment you avoided.

[–]ProDrug 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, that would've been horrible. Actually, I really do like their music(and they're getting big now. I hear them being played in a lot of stores) and I was the one who bought the tickets for my friends. If anything, I would've been that creepy gushy fan who just happens to also be completely oblivious. Basically I would have been the overly attached girlfriend meeting her internet boyfriend for the first time but not realizing it....

It's just that I don't do a lot of research on bands and I don't memorize like album titles, band names or song names or anything like that. Really, I probably wouldn't even remember their name if it wasn't for this incident and the fact I saw the Promise Ring the day before I saw Purity Ring.

[–]infanticide_holiday 2 points3 points ago

Clearly you don't understand, this is a thread where people old enough to remember when Kurt Cobain was culturally relevant act all superior to people not old enough to remember when Kurt Cobain was culturally relevant.

[–]arisasdf 6 points7 points ago

First of all, that Gap metaphor is lame. Second, Kurt Cobain is not just a "band member", he went on to become an icon of pop culture, and I don't even like their music. Third, she didn't even react to the name, forget the looks.

It's a matter of being in touch with the world you live in. If you're going to identify yourself with the name of such an iconic band, you should at least recognize that name, or else you're just being superficial by wearing the shirt for it's design or "coolness" and not its meaning. When people stop being authentic, society starts to suck dick.

[–]DrMonocle 1 point2 points ago

In my mind, people who berate others about what kind of music they like are just as bad as people who get agitated about what type of computer/cell phone/car/video game system other people use. Sure, those are consumer products and this is art, but it boils down to some people feeling a need to believe the choices they've made are the correct ones and people who make other choices are wrong.

Some people like different music for different reasons. Who gives a shit?

[–]333kyary -4 points-3 points ago

Wow, you're so going against the hivemind. Man I wish I had your courage.

No more seriously, I can't believe one would be stupid enough not to see why this situation is stupid. But let me explain, since you seem to be genuinely oblivious.

Listening to music is one thing, but buying a T-Shirt to show your support for a band is another. Unless you just want to fit in a certain group that is superficial enough to judge on the clothes, you would expect someone like this girl to know at least the lead singer of the band. Not to mention this is Nirvana, and that Kurt Cobain's suicide is quite famous, not only amongst fans.

That and the fact that she didn't bother googling Kurt Cobain after getting his name.

[–]monkeyjay 6 points7 points ago

but buying a T-Shirt to show your support for a band is another.

A completely unfounded assertion that renders everything you said completely irrelevant if it isn't true.

It could be a hand-me-down from her older brother, it could be a random t-shirt she found in a second-hand store, it could be she just liked the colour and didn't care what was on it, she might even like the band's music and not give a shit about the people behind it. In fact given he facts all of these are more likely than your assertion.

[–]BlakeFromFinance 2 points3 points ago

At least know what you are wearing. If I wore a shirt that said "Abortions are the bees' knees," and I had no idea what abortions were, don't you think people would be pretty pissed off about that? Kurt Cobain might as well be synonymous with Nirvana as abortion is with killing fetuses. Know what you are wearing before you walk around in public like a poser.

[–]FatKidThuggin 4 points5 points ago

It's a fucking shirt, who gives a shit? I thought you were against being "superficial enough to judge on the clothes"

[–]cosmicsparrow 3 points4 points ago

this whole conversation is so high school. Grow up, who really gives two shits what someone wears.

[–]bitwolfy 2 points3 points ago

Who actually is the chick on the left? Anyone?

[–]kewliomajor 6 points7 points ago

There are plenty of bands in my library that I couldn't name you a single member or pick out a face from. Usually only see them when they perform at concerts and obviously nirvana has not performed in some time...

[–]Xyncx 5 points6 points ago

This thread is one giant circlejerk.

[–]jacq_willow 6 points7 points ago

I never wear an item of clothing if I don't know the reference of it. Needed a hat for work so I borrowed my brother's hat he got from Bali. I found out the meaning to "Jiggy Jig" the hard way. Makes me think twice now.

[–]SirRuto 11 points12 points ago

Mostly why I don't wear Band shirts. I may like their music, but I don't "follow" music, if you know what I mean. If a more enthusiastic fan tries to talk to me t length about the band, I really can't relate and feel like a disingenuous poser.

[–]Lawd_of_Spoons 5 points6 points ago

Maybe she's just a confused Buddhist?

[–]WolfManJohn 7 points8 points ago

I don't know the band members and what they look like for 90% of bands I like.

[–]jumpiz 16 points17 points ago

Let's just play devil's advocate in here:

Maybe she like to use the T-shirt because of the meaning of the word NIRVANA.

Per Wikipedia: NIRVANA is an ancient Sanskrit term used in Indian religions to describe the profound peace of mind that is acquired with moksha (liberation).

After all, it doesn't look like a name because it's all in caps...

I was still laughing thought...

[–]nstomper 13 points14 points ago

Keanue Reeves played a better devil's advocate imo

[–]sheerheartattack 4 points5 points ago

Or it's not her shirt. Or it's a hand-me-down. Or it's a gift. Or it's a shirt she bought for no other reason than she wanted/needed a shirt. Of course, on reddit, a shirt is not an article of clothing, it's apparently a goddamn statement of who you are.

[–]iamslm22 1 point2 points ago

It's her facebook profile picture

[–]ericishere 1 point2 points ago

Are you fucking serious? Reposted within an hour.

[–]ndchristie 2 points3 points ago

first pic :

"If you've seen this week's biggest non-political story, but don't recognize a non-iconic photograph of a musician who died almost 20 years ago..."

I like Nirvana and had a bunch of posters of them when I was younger, but I still had to check the comments to know for sure. I would have flipped a coin between Kurt Cobain and a young Mitch Hedberg - who would have been equally relevant and much more recent.

second pic :

She should know his name by now, but there are plenty of bands I listen to where I couldn't name the lead, and barely a handful of bands I like where I could tell you the whole lineup.

[–]mooncougar13 2 points3 points ago

She's probably just trolling.

[–]rynownd 2 points3 points ago

I think Kurt Cobain would prefer she not know what he looked like, but instead simply enjoyed the music Nirvana made. Let's hope she actually likes their music and, like many people here, just doesn't know/care what he looks like.

Nah... she's just a poser.

[–]and_of_four 0 points1 point ago

The one good thing about getting older is the growing sense of self-righteousness that develops as you look down on younger generations with disdain.

Damn kids, how dare they not know about the musicians of my generation!

One would think that she'd know who Kurt Cobain is if she's wearing a Nirvana shirt though.

[–]ModernAlias 2 points3 points ago

That's not fair. Knowing someone from current events, and not knowing a junkie from an old rock band doesn't mean anything bad about you. And I was 16 when they dropped those albums. Kids these days are being too hard on their own generation.

[–]Greyletter 2 points3 points ago

Because you can't appreciate a band without knowing what their lead singer looks like?

[–]thewalkingfred 0 points1 point ago

Why the fuck does anyone care? I listen to shit tons of music but I sure as hell couldn't tell you the names of every artist in each band and I especially couldn't pick them out just by pictures. I don't have to know who each and every member is to enjoy their music or think their album covers are cool. Fuck.

[–]WompaONE 2 points3 points ago

Killing yourself over being picked on just proves Darwin's theory right. Only the strongest survive, apparently someone was pretty weak...

[–]CrashRiot 2 points3 points ago

The caption is bullshit anyways. Amanda Todd was a young girl who had her entire life ahead of her and then made a poor decision and took it because she was taken advantage of by a grown ass pervert of a man. Kurt Cobain was a dude who had everything; money, wife and kid, but killed himself because he "he couldn't cope with the fame." Don't get me wrong, I love Nirvana and I think Cobain made some of the greatest contributions to music, but I can't stand this whole "tortured artist" reputation thing anymore. People put him on a pedestal that he has no business being on. If more people know about Amanda Todd than Kurt Cobain, then I think the world is headed in the right direction. I'll probably get down voted for this, but fuck it.

[–]ID10T_er 3 points4 points ago

I remember my sophmore year in high school this cheerleader came to school wearing a pink nirvana smiley face hoodie. My english teacher was trying to crack a joke and when she walked by he went "sniff hmm sure does smell like teen spirit." she goes huh? He explains to her "its the name of one of nirvana's more popular songs." she goes "oh I don't listen to them, just thought it was a cute shirt." half the class sat there with their jaw dropped while the other half (especially me and my football buddies) laughed our asses off.

[–]KiwiParade 4 points5 points ago

You were just the coolest kid in your high school.

[–]RickBamf 1 point2 points ago

I don't even know who the girl opposite Kurt is....

[–]blastedt 4 points5 points ago

One can listen to a band and not give a bloody fuck the name of the members. (Going out on a limb here and guessing this Cobain guy is a member of Nirvana. Context clues, bitches.)

Source: I know very few actors' and musicians' names.

[–]virtualoutcast 1 point2 points ago

I'm more surprised that someone seems to think Kurt Cobain is worth knowing about.

[–]ImSofaKingWeToddit 0 points1 point ago

She's just a big PHONEY!!!

[–]speculiar 2 points3 points ago

Mother of god, I have never felt older than I do at this moment.
