Doesn't seem creepy. Seems pretty cool, actually.

[–]QueueNX 10 points11 points ago

misuse of the word "creepy" is really getting me down :\

[–]The_Painted_Man 0 points1 point ago

What are you talking about? It is a perfectly cromulent word.

[–]bonkus 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure you mean cromulent...

[–]The_Painted_Man 1 point2 points ago

thanks.

[–]happycrabeatsthefish 1 point2 points ago

Yeah. It really passes the test of time. Still is beautiful.

[–]t_F_ 0 points1 point ago

Creepy=deserted.

for those of you that is wondering, this is Craco, italy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craco

it was situated on the side of a hilltop for defensive reasons (apparently there was some sort of large militaristic nation in italy?)

but, because of earthquakes, which for some unknown reason, doesn't play well with towns made on the edge of hills, caused the population to abandon it in the early 1900s

Most Italian small towns were built on elevated terrain for defensive reasons during the middle age. There are still hundreds of them, all well preserved and still inhabited. This is my favourite: pic1, pic2

I can only imagine that when a rumor gets started in Calcata, everyone has heard it in 30 minutes.

[–]inkursive 13 points14 points ago

See also: Star Forts.

Italian examples: Palmonova, Sarzana.

Actually, the tradition of building cities like that in Italy goes even further back than the middle ages. It goes back even further than the Romans, for that matter!

The Etruscans were building cities surrounded by cliffs like Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto before there was a Rome!

They were so successful as defensive structures, that places like Orvieto were even used as a fortress for the Pope nearly 2000 years after their founding, when Rome was sacked.

[–]twentyfumble 1 point2 points ago

Yes it's amazing :)

The etruscan Orvieto was destroyed by the Romans in one of their early wars. A new city was rebuilt on the original spot on the top of the hill surrounded by cliffs after the collapse of the Roman Empire.

During the Roman empire Italy was unified and protected by the legions, there was little need for defensive strongholds. In the middle ages most cities were independent and there was no central authority to enforce peace, therefore population moved on hilltops and built walls.

You're still awesome in the purest sense of the word. You're my new background.

[–]hokiepride 1 point2 points ago

Right in the article you linked it states that the town is not currently abandoned.

[–]T-rex_with_a_gun[S] 1 point2 points ago

[–]juliovega914 13 points14 points ago

This thing looks like it can be minecraft'd very effectively

[–]BluShine 4 points5 points ago

Now I know what I'm doing this weekend...

[–]ladiamante 6 points7 points ago

I wonder if you could live there now or if there are still too many earthquakes.

[–]T-rex_with_a_gun[S] 6 points7 points ago

i think the earthquakes have damaged the land structurally. dont quote me.

[–]fernandizzel 2 points3 points ago

i think the earthquakes have damaged the land structurally

You can't tell me what to do, /r/firstworldanarchists

[–]T-rex_with_a_gun[S] 15 points16 points ago

[–]Andrewticus04 -1 points0 points ago

Yes, earthquakes are slowly taking their toll on cities like this, particularly Civita di Bagnoregio.

Doesn't stop people from being able to live there - it's the lack of work and 0 population growth that's keeping people from living there.

[–]xaplexus 4 points5 points ago

... and exactly where?

[–]Satanscock 4 points5 points ago

[–]lobstercombine 11 points12 points ago

I looked at this and immediately thought of Assassin's Creed. ...which I guess makes me a loser

[–]brick-geek 6 points7 points ago

I thought of the 'Lost Coast' add-on for Half Life 2. I suppose we can be losers together, heh.

[–]knowses 2 points3 points ago

Actually reminded me of Torquemada in Red Dead Redemption.

[–]lloudermilk 2 points3 points ago

Samesies. I'd climb that so hard.

[–]Machinax 0 points1 point ago

I...kinda...thought of Counter-Strike.

[–]oh_creationists 0 points1 point ago

I thought of the Godfather.

[–]bonkus 0 points1 point ago

No, that makes you a Lahoo-Zahurrr. I'm totally putting my right hand to my forehead in a backwards "L" shape so that when you see it in your mind's eye it's a perfect "L".

[–]roflbbq 0 points1 point ago

Masyaf..

[–]CupBeEmpty 3 points4 points ago

If you go there you have to fight a whole mess of annoying Drauger and then a Vampire boss.

[–]RaileneOnyx 0 points1 point ago

In which I'll stomp through shooting arrows at them. >.o

[–]aklovemynuts 3 points4 points ago

They should have had the location of Rohan be filmed in this place.

[–]Atin321 0 points1 point ago

My first thought was that this was a picture of Rohan.

[–]k1dnamedcudi 0 points1 point ago

Must.... explore....

[–]TeaIsForMugs -1 points0 points ago

I wonder why it's abandoned... No threat of flooding, etc.

[–]TheMadMule 1 point2 points ago

I would explore that so hard.

[–]loosh1988 0 points1 point ago

I'll take it! Where do I sign?

[–]tall_person 1 point2 points ago

Dibs.

[–]lloudermilk 1 point2 points ago

$10 says at the bottom of that tower there's a conveniently placed bale of hay.

[–]Cubix__ 0 points1 point ago

It looks like Corleone in The Godfather.

[–]PuffMasterJ 0 points1 point ago

I wonder who the last person was to leave this place.

[–]the_mighty_skeetadon 1 point2 points ago

There are lots of little places like this in Italy -- we were there for our honeymoon a couple weeks back, and wandered through a half-inhabited, half-crumbling ghost-feeling town in Le Marche. It was amazing -- and you see more of them dotting the hillsides everywhere...

[–]HotbutteryToast 0 points1 point ago

This is why I love this subreddit.

[–]Adan714 0 points1 point ago

Why creepy? Nice!

[–]bobsagetfullhouse 1 point2 points ago

I just love everything about Italy. I really wanna go there one day.

[–]cicla 0 points1 point ago

Im wondering what about if some one moves there and start living there? Would the goverment take him out or the cops? Is it possible?

[–]IArgueWithAtheists 0 points1 point ago

[–]smakusdod 0 points1 point ago

Where are all the men?

They've all died from vendettas....

[–]darkplumb90 1 point2 points ago

For some reason I think I saw that town in a movie at one point.

[–]Thedevilinsidemne 1 point2 points ago

i wouldn't call it abandoned if the Wikipedia article about it is right there is actually 773 people living there (or around it)

[–]I_FISTED_MY_GRANDMA 1 point2 points ago

Ooo, dark souls, anyone?

[–]SnortingBoar 0 points1 point ago

Do you know some places like this in Piemonte or Liguria?

[–]drepoupon 0 points1 point ago
