Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Guy in the sweater did not dress for the task.

[–]Hitno 1 point2 points ago

Believe me, he's dressed more than good enough for the task. How I know this? I'm from the Faroes, and it is quite normal to see people in jeans and a sweatshirt wading into the sea when we kill them whales.

but why? What's up with that? What did the whales do to you?

[–]Hitno 1 point2 points ago

they represent a great free food source that swims past the window?

Do you have any type of regulations in place when catching the whales to ensure that a healthy population is maintained?

[–]Hitno 0 points1 point ago

Nothing really set in stone as such, but there are records of every single whale being killed, what sex, weight etc and where. So if one region has recently killed lets say 100 whales, and then two weeks later the same region spots a new pod of whales, then the authorities will step in and say there will be no killing of whales, cause that region already has plenty of whale meat.

That's pretty much the only regulation, and of course the weather, and despite new modern engines etc, the number of killed whales has been more or less the same through out the ages (since records started).

And to anyone claiming that we are hunting them to extinction, that would be like saying deer hunters in Maine are hunting all deer in North America to extinction, just not possible for people in such a tiny area to kill off an entire species which covers an area several thousand times larger than that of the hunters.

And by all estimates, then we do kill in the area of 0.5% or lower of the entire population of whales, and I know of no one who would claim that's unsustainable.

I had read that there are some health concerns with eating whale meat/blubber, high levels of mercury and other toxins, which is pretty much true of all sea life or so it seems. Is that a concern, or just overblown?

[–]Hitno 0 points1 point ago

I consider it overblown, but still most if not all pregnant women stay away from eating it, as well as many children.

yakyakyak you can get all kinds of mental disorders and what have you, I don't know anyone with any such disorders, my great grand mother is 101 and is clear in hte head still despite having eaten lots of whale meat through the years.
