This news is actually great. At this rate, I think the CBA will be agreed by Monday. NHL offers contract, NHLPA tweaks it, NHL agrees or tweaks it just a bit, and we're done.

[–]SylarFox 19 points20 points ago

God, I hope it happens that easily.

[–]FullSharkAlligator 6 points7 points ago

Well that is the glass 150% full take on it.

Is it wrong to be optimistic for once? I'm so fucking sick of the constant pessimism. Let the guy be excited, being a downer helps no one.

[–]admiralwaffles 0 points1 point ago

I'm preferring to remain at an even keel. Assume the status quo until something actually changes.

[–]freelhockey29 7 points8 points ago

but your spelling could be

[–]Zamboniman 9 points10 points ago

It ain't over yet, but deep in the bowels of NHL arenas you gotta know that someone is checking the stock of beer kegs and stale popcorn, and that zamboni drivers are frantically looking under arena maintenance-shack couches for their keys.

Let's hope...

[–]ismellburnttoast 4 points5 points ago

Your post brought back, the like... the smell of the arena and the feel of the chill coming off of the ice.

Let's hope.

Lets just hope that the NHLPA realizes this is the best offer the NHL is going to give them. If they ask for too much change, it'll be shot down immediately and we'll be back to square one.

I realize that this is how negotiations work, but I just really, really hope the NHLPA knows that the entire season rests on the next seven days.

[–]NAMBLA2012[S] 4 points5 points ago

For the first time since July, there appears to be some positive reactions. The NHL put alot of pressure on nhlpa by rolling out details of season start dates and how the games are to be made up that have been lost. The nhlpa counter offer will at least be in the same ball park as the NHL offer, nobody is walking away from the table this time. Too much at stake, too much public appeal on the line. We will be wstching hockey nov 2nd. Mark my words.

[–]FrankReynolds 1 point2 points ago

I totally agree that we will be watching hockey on November 2nd. There's no way that an offer this public will be completely shot down. I expect counteroffers and negotiations over the next 3-5 days, but by this time next week I fully expect to be adding the new Wild game schedule to my Google Calendar.

[–]minecrafterambesten 1 point2 points ago

adding the new Wild game schedule to my Google Calendar.

Is there some easy way to do this? Seems like a lot of work

[–]FrankReynolds 1 point2 points ago

You can download the iCalendar or CSV version of the schedule and import it directly into Google Calendar.

Just don't make the same mistake I did and import the calendar before the season starts, or you have to go in and delete 82 calendar items when there's a lockout.

[–]minecrafterambesten 1 point2 points ago

thanks! hopefully I get to do that soon.

[–]bilateralchicken 1 point2 points ago

I have cautious optimism that the NHLPA is dumb enough to outright decline this offer and say it's "preposterous."

Anything but a positive or cautious positive from the NHLPA is a bad sign.

[–]CakeEater 0 points1 point ago

The biggest concern that I have is changes to the semantics in the CBA, such as how is HRR defined? If the owners didn't change what HRR consists of then the NHLPA shouldn't have much issue with the offer.

[–]FullSharkAlligator 0 points1 point ago

Lets just hope that the NHLPA realizes this is the best offer the NHL is going to give them

It's not and they don't think that. This is just the NHL's first reasonable offer. NHLPA can still get a better one.

[–]xSupernaut 7 points8 points ago

The puck is sliding.

[–]Explosion2 6 points7 points ago

counter-proposal... so does that mean they're not good with the offer?

[–]ray_MAN 22 points23 points ago

They have to make a counter-proposal.

When you negotiate, you don't just lay down and take the first thing that comes your way. You have to try to squeeze every last bit out of the other side that you can.

There's a 10 day negotiating window for this deal to be accepted. Expect a lot of counter-proposals from both sides between now and then.

[–]NAMBLA2012[S] 5 points6 points ago

Exactly! NHL wants a max 5 year contract length. Players want at least 9. Age of UFA needs to be discussed, and many other things. The hardest part is over, players will take the 50/50, the rest will be sorted. Lookin good ppl

[–]leafssuck 3 points4 points ago

I agree that 5 years is the best. 9 years is way too long.

[–]ray_MAN 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't even say they'll take 50/50. They might try to push for a more tiered plan to decrease it over time starting at 52/50 or 53/50.

The hard part was just getting these idiots talking about the issues at hand. I'm glad that this proposal can start that and hopefully save the season.

[–]lord_of_the_deers 8 points9 points ago

They might try to push for a more tiered plan to decrease it over time starting at 52/50 or 53/50.

not sure if you're joking. "50/50" is 50% to both sides.

[–]ray_MAN 6 points7 points ago

I should have been more clear. I meant that it would start at 53 or 52 and gradually go down to 50.

[–]Mentalseppuku 2 points3 points ago

I believe the contract protections were put into place as a balance against not tiering the step-down to 50%.

[–]Yensuji 1 point2 points ago

I believe the NHLPA has made it clear it is not willing to go with any form of progressive salary rollback. The NHL made this proposal very strategically by setting the bar at flat-out 50/50. Any proposal that demands further will be seen by the average observer as ridiculous; this split of revenue is as fair as you can get really on the surface.

It'd be a stupid move on the NHLPA's part to not accept the 50/50 at this point; this proposal is probably the furthest the owners will ever extend on their front. By demanding more, they would stall discussions even further and draw the possibility of cancelling out the regular season completely. Accept the 50/50, start discussing out the inner details on contracts and such. If what the NHL stated was true (in that current contracts will be paid out eventually without reduction or something), there shouldn't reason for the players not to accept the main component of this proposal.

I believe there are be hidden niches within the fine text of the proposal that the players definitely won't like, but the NHL's proposal of today should definitely be treated as the foundation going forth. This will get the ball going, and could potentially save the 2012-13 season. Throwing ideas of 52/48 or 53/47 won't be cutting it for either side.

[–]NAMBLA2012[S] 0 points1 point ago

I can see the players counter specifying a gradual reduction to land at 50/50 over 3-4 years. And I wouldn't blame them for trying, nor do I think the owners will walk away completely. It will be interesting to see how fehr fairs here.

[–]WoozleWuzzle 0 points1 point ago

People are very optimistic.

After going through the last lockout, I very pessimistic that anything will happen. I was optimistic, but not so much anymore.

[–]djf4 2 points3 points ago

I still feel (cautiously) optimistic. Not really a bad sign, I'd say.

[–]pandajungle 0 points1 point ago

If anything I'm kind of hoping they only tweaked it a bit and stuck with the 50/50. The ELC thing would be the biggest issue, I assume. I'm really crossing my fingers that it's something simple that can be ironed out easily so the ball continues to roll, if you can even say that's what's happening now.

[–]hakan_loob44 0 points1 point ago

It's called negotiating. Fehr is in a position of power now. Clearly the owners have buckled under the pressure of NBCSN and the sponsors.

[–]APWTSIS 2 points3 points ago

I'd say they buckled more under a mixture of sponsorship and the fans. Having no sponsors would be terrible for them, but having no fan base to buy the product or see the games would absolutely cripple them. I know, I know, there's always going to be people who go to games and buy the merch but it'd still kill them to lose die-hard fans and season ticket holders

[–]makinganotheraccount 0 points1 point ago

Of course not. Why would they be? 8 years till FA, 50-50 split, and an immediate reduction are all things the players will try to negotiate away.

[–]krucz36 2 points3 points ago

I went out to get a drink today, in 93 degree weather, in my jersey. Please get this done, NHL.

[–]camsterc 1 point2 points ago

they'll counter with a slower cut. but it'll be closer than any other offer because the 50/50 already has a bit of leniency built in cuz it protects current contracts. I'd expect the current deal would really be 52/48 for the players this upcoming year given how the deal has supposedly been offered. they'll counter with 54/46 going down to 52/48 and then maybe they'll get 51 percent in the end.

[–]wykydtron23 0 points1 point ago

Good to hear the conference is over, a full 82 games compressed or not will be awesome. If it's compressed hockey parties every night! Hopefully the NHLPA will accept this offer with some minor tweaks. If they don't accept this offer i fear that we will not have a season this year.

[–]timeofnoreply 1 point2 points ago

I'm a little bit worried the owners will simply reject the PA's proposal and not change their own because a lot of fans have changed their minds to support the owners.

Hopefully we'll see progress though. Remember in September when Bettman said the NHL's offers would only get worse? So much for that.

[–]wr80 0 points1 point ago

We haven't supported anyone but we do support the progress and hopefully they tweak it out and i'm hammered watching hopefully the most amazing Blues season ever.

[–]sauced25 0 points1 point ago

SOOOO CLOSSSSE! I just need a season it would be sweet if they were actually able to fit in all 82 games. I'm not so sure they'll get it done by next week though. But it does seem very very close, which is niiiiiiice.

They are trying to fit in all 82 right?

[–]Atlai 0 points1 point ago

Yes. They want to add in extra game a month and a couple at the end of the season to make up for the lost month.

[–]NAMBLA2012[S] 0 points1 point ago

This offer has a deadline. They're pushing for a Nov 2nd regulAr season start, with preseason starting October 26. The deal must be done by midnight of the 25th, or is back to the drawling board.

[–]brownmagician 0 points1 point ago

If the NHLPA fucks this up, I'm going to get really upset at these spolied brat players.
