I believe it's a reference to a cartoon Curious George. George always wanted to take the dude's hat.

In the comic it looks like he's gonna take the hat, but since he's a monkey and monkeys do this kind of shit, he took his skin—thereby playing with our expectations humourously. (See: all those news headlines where a monkey takes someone's face off in a spontaneous fit of aggression.)
