Nope, generally when painting with light you take a flash first, then about 30 seconds of exposure. Note: don't use a flare.

Many cameras have this option on long exposures. It's called front curtain sync or rear curtain sync. Different cameras call it different things though so maybe a look on google or your manual will help you. On my canon point and shoot it's called slow synchro i think.

To add to this, some other names, depending on your camera model include:

  • First Curtain Sync (flash at start of exposure) vs Second Curtain Sync (flash at end of exposure)
  • Curtain A Sync (flash at start of exposure) vs Curtain B Sync (flash at end of exposure)

You can also multi-pop with a second flash for multiple versions of people in the same photo, or highlighting one spot with more light.

I've only done this a couple of years ago with a stranger, what I remember was the following:

one single flash when you want the persons to show (usually in the start or the end of the photo?)

Of course a LOONG exposure time.

Seperate flash is not needed, the built in one will do just fine. Most cameras will automatically do all this when you set a long exposure with flash on. Obviously you'll need a tripod or something to put the camera on. It doesn't need to be 100% steady, but it shouldn't shake too much.

If you have a few strobe lights, and some cheap color filters, set your exposure at max--usually about 30 seconds--and then run in front of the strobes and jump in the air. Each strobe flash with add one version of you to the finished exposure for interesting effects.

There are plenty of different techniques; it's all about experimentation with exposure. I usually use manual settings on my DSLR and set up the exposure time myself and set the auto flash to go off in the same manner you would with a regular photo. You don't need to use an external flash (although using a manual flash would give you more options) and most point and shoot cameras have manual exposure or long exposure settings that will work. It's a fun technique to play with!

If you search for "light painting", "light photography", "long-exposure photography" you'll find some stuff and be able to get the gist of it.

Wiring? Nah. Get a camera that can do a long shutter speed. Wait until it's dark, set the shutter to a long speed... say 10 to 30 seconds. Press the shutter, and then "paint" with your light facing the camera. If you use a flash and a very dark place, you can get an image of the people in the shot being still like this. If there's a little ambient light, the people will look blurred due to their motion during the exposure.

It's an experimental process, so do it a few times until you like it!

                                I found it relatively funny. The unoriginal title certainly detracted from its overall quality, but I found the picture itself entertaining.                                     Yeah, the guy in the photo is my brother. Here is the gizmodo link. He told me the whole story of his "15 minutes of internet fame" So he took this as a joke. He is a hilarious guy, glad he got some sort of recognition for once. So anyways, he posts it to reddit. Gets nothing. Like maybe 3 or 4 upvotes. He leaves it at that, and goes to work. Comes home from work and is amazed to find it exploded out of no where. Multiple websites are asking him questions about it, and it just becomes an internet sensation for a couple days. Needless to say, he was ecstatic about it and called me immediately. We still talk about it to this day. Ill have to give him a call sometime soon and tell him its back on the front page.

                                      On some cameras, there is a shooting mode that allows you to keep the shutter open for longer than usual. If you use a tripod, the picture doesn't get blurry, and you can "paint" with a glowstick or flashlight.

                                      All these photobombs just remind me about my mother's birthday like two years ago. We were celebrating at a restaurant near downtown Houston and were just leaving, when my aunts and mom's friends wanted to take a picture together.

                                      My dad has them all bunch up together and snaps the picture with his camera. We didn't think to check the picture right on the spot, and all went home. Later, upon checking the picture we noticed some random woman snuck in on the pic and made the craziest grin I've ever seen. Everybody was like, who the heck is that?! And what kind of person does this?!

                                      Everyone looked at my dad...he was clueless.
