It looks like Ricky Gervais didn't tweet this. At least, there isn't any record of him having tweeted this on his twitter account.

[–]ROELtja 99 points100 points ago

[–]imbapwnn00b 58 points59 points ago

[–]RedTrauma 7 points8 points ago

not only did he not, its a gross generalization that promotes stupidity in our already retarded world.

[–]crystalgeiser 0 points1 point ago

If there were only more people like you, RedTrauma.

[–]sweep99 1 point2 points ago

Agreed. Our world sits at the front of the bus and cleans the window with its tongue.

[–]Spindax 0 points1 point ago

Those two images don't even have the same font..

Just use a web-browser debugging tool to alter the source code on the go. Firebug works for Firefox. I'm not sure what to use with other browsers.

EDIT: I see you've changed your image! They're still not the same, however!

[–]imbapwnn00b -1 points0 points ago

What do you mean not the same font?

[–]Spindax -1 points0 points ago

The text in ROELtja's and imbapwnn00b's forgeries don't share the same font.

However, imbapwnn00b has since my time of posting edited his post to contain an image with a more similar text. Formerly they'd used a sans-serif font akin to Callibri.

EDIT: I didn't realise you were the same person...... Facepalm

Here's the old image, by the way. http://i.imgur.com/VIBo6.png

[–]imbapwnn00b -1 points0 points ago

Nice work! Yes I did edit the link, kinda as a joke to see if you'd spot it... Allthough we are not the same person , if that's what you think.

EDIT: Oh i thought you meant me and ROELtja, not me and me.

Btw, how could you see my "edit history"?

[–]Aiyon -1 points0 points ago

Cached copy of the page, maybe?

[–]Aperfectmoment -1 points0 points ago

fucking nerds, says i from behind my LCD monitor

[–]Dr_ButtToucher_PhD -1 points0 points ago

Not being the same font makes it that much more funny.

[–]plutos_kiss 22 points23 points ago

People have been posting a lot of these lately, and none show up on the person's Twitter. Here is a Zach Braff one from last week: http://i.imgur.com/zQbl6.jpg

[–]Z0idberg_MD 27 points28 points ago

Why do people even bother to do this? What do I do with my karma? it just sits there. Doing nothing. Leeching off the state. I am never going to win its vote.

[–]Piratiko 19 points20 points ago

47% of karma is worthless.

[–]noksky 3 points4 points ago

This may be true, but 100% of the prayers from friends and family is what brought him back to earth safely. This is backed through scientific evidence on prayers.

[–]batigoal 0 points1 point ago

Yes but at least the other 53% is useless.

[–]ignorant_prick 0 points1 point ago

what about the other 53%?

[–]Piratiko 7 points8 points ago

Job creators.

[–]I_Hate_Reddit_ 0 points1 point ago

It's not about karma, it's about attention

[–]ranimchaya 3 points4 points ago

I'm pretty sure I saw that one on twitter. He might've deleted it afterwards

[–]ribslargemeat 0 points1 point ago

I definitely saw him post this. Must have deleted it.

[–]mamamuse -1 points0 points ago

You must have seen it on the front page, because he never posted it. Right when it was posted on here I went to retweet it, and just a few minutes after this 'screen shot' it wasn't there. While anything is possible, I doubt the timing was that good.

[–]ribslargemeat 2 points3 points ago

No. I saw he posted it, came on reddit awhile later, saw there was a Zach Braff tweet on the frontpage and had zero doubt which tweet it was.

Edit: I retweeted it. http://i.imgur.com/LnIlM.jpg

[–]raihan42 5 points6 points ago

It was deleted. I replied to it saying I saw it on Reddit earlier. Looking back at the reply just gets me a "not found" error.

Tumblr image? > facebook > reddit > @RickyGervais' twitter > Reddit > and now the screen of the tweet is on fb and tumblr. Crazypants.

http://i.imgur.com/LKTgN.jpg

[–]larg3-p3nis 1 point2 points ago

Well, had he not put a picture of Ricky Gervais he wouldn't have got all the karma.

[–]SkySilver 2 points3 points ago

Maybe he deleted it because he realized that it's actually quite silly.

[–]ErenVae 4 points5 points ago

I agree it is quite silly, but I wouldn't expect /r/atheism to understand why. Thought I'd ride the downvote train with you.

[–]SkySilver 0 points1 point ago

I actually did expect that.

[–]deyur 0 points1 point ago

Nuh uh. Everything bad is religion. Everything good is science.

Yay, /r/atheism!

[–]trolloc1 -1 points0 points ago

Thank goodness somebody on reddit actually uses twitter so can check on this.

[–]gakkgakk 0 points1 point ago

Yes, he tweeted it. But he has deleted it due to complaints for not giving credit to author, even i author is "unknown".

I know cause i was one of the ones replying to complain for not giving credit

[–]VickBear 47 points48 points ago

Atheism = -1*Science

[–]Spudgunhimself 52 points53 points ago

I seriously thought we were better than this. A child getting shot over religion shouldn't be a trophy, it's a tragedy.

[–]VinTheRighteous 47 points48 points ago

Really? You thought /r/atheism was better than this? Do you spend much time here?

[–]thefran -2 points-1 points ago

She was religious after all.

If you have spent any time in this subreddit, you should know that religious people don't deserve compassion: their deaths can, however, be used as material for cheap jokes.

Science flies you into space. Religion flies you into buildings. HAHAHAHA HAHAHA thousands of people died and I don't give a shit. Science is great. DAE science?

[–]MutusCarnifex 6 points7 points ago

Just looked and it looks like this wasn't tweeted.

[–]harabanaz 2 points3 points ago

I'm an atheist and prefer science as a method by which to understand the Universe, but I will not put a moral judgement on it. It is an efficient method for making our technology work - for good and evil. The people who condemn children to death because of religion are no more evidence that religion is evil than using trial-and-error to improve guns and using electronic media to advance their evil is evidence that science is.

Religion was used to justify slavery, and still is - the freaks who shot the young lady seem to want a society with slaves and owners, not wives and husbands; and as Frederick Douglass discovered, education of slaves is a threat to slaveholders. Religion was also used to condemn slavery.

[–]Jorsne 124 points125 points ago

Yeah we get it now. A man jumped and a girl got shot. This is the 5th time I have seen this sentence today on reddit.

[–]accountiberius1 166 points167 points ago

Welcome to reddit. Now shut the fuck up and keep scrolling.

[–]gnovos 33 points34 points ago

This is the first time I've seen it. It is pretty fucking rude of you not to tell me about it when you first saw it, long long ago, especially since you're now trying to suppress it. What, this joke only belongs to you? I don't get to see it? What the fuck, man?

[–]runner64 20 points21 points ago

Ive never seen it before either. If you're sick of seeing the same thing too many times, maybe don't spend all day clicking every link on reddit? Go outside or something. Give the world a little time to refresh its content. I guarantee that if you visit once a week, we will be discussing different things every time you show up.

[–]Dr_ButtToucher_PhD 1 point2 points ago

This exact post need to be in pretty much every thread. Seeing people bitch about reposts is 1000x more annoying than any actual repost could ever be.

[–]gnovos 6 points7 points ago

I'm not sick of it, I think you're replying to the wrong person.

[–]Kealper 8 points9 points ago

I think runner64 meant that to be a follow-up comment to yours, directed at Jorsne, not directed at you... At least, that's the vibe I'm getting from it.

[–]Bluemoon_333 1 point2 points ago

Long long ago? The man just jumped 2 days ago! I've seen it multiple times since then.

[–]death_by_karma 0 points1 point ago

Joke? There's a joke here somewhere?

[–]Muntberg -1 points0 points ago

Really? The same fucking quote as a facebook post was the top post on /r/atheism yesterday. But obviously this one is different because it's our favorite fundie smasher saying it.

[–]gnovos 0 points1 point ago

The same fucking quote as a facebook post was the top post on /r/atheism yesterday.

Why didn't you fucking tell me about it?? Am I supposed to be here 24/7 so I get every single thing the first time it's posted? You gotta tell me about this stuff, man.

[–]Muntberg 0 points1 point ago

So by that logic, we should just repost the same 20 things everyday incase someone missed it the first time.

[–]gnovos 0 points1 point ago

No, I'm saying, unless you plan to tell me about everything that I miss, then stop being upset about reposts.

[–]UserNumber42 10 points11 points ago

So the first time you saw it it was really cool and new. Now it's old and stupid. Who cares if this is the first time others saw it or when you saw it it probably wasn't the first time it was posted. You are it, the cream of the crop, things are only relevant and cool if you say they are. Thank you. We all owe you so much for your tireless work.

[–]anume 0 points1 point ago

Tuskegee syphilis experiment. Dr. Mengele.

We all have our moments.

[–]PoisoCaine -3 points-2 points ago

Get over it.

[–]textanddrive 19 points20 points ago

Dear Science,

This week I fed some poor people and you designed better weapons systems to kill them.

   Yours, Religion.

lololololol

[–]Osiris47 3 points4 points ago

More so engineers than scientists. And this comparison is retarded.

[–]nickfromredcliff 1 point2 points ago

And this comparison is retarded.

Yes.

More so engineers than scientists.

Science isn't a profession, it's a method.

[–]Osiris47 -1 points0 points ago

But there really wasn't all that much science since most of the stuff had already been tested and done almost 60 years ago.

[–]Rawrski87 7 points8 points ago

The meaning is great. However, people are truly looking at this space diving thing as an innovation of modern science. We've been doing this since the 60s. How has nobody heard about it until now?

[–]yahabouthat 18 points19 points ago

Listen, we can all agree that science is what built the capsule, the parachute, and every other mechanical component of that jump. Maybe you all missed the part where he prayed before jumping out of the capsule. So lets get one thing straight. Atheists did not drop that man from the stratosphere. Religious men did. Congratulations to all the atheist redditors sitting around laughing at religion, keeping patting yourself on the back and telling yourself that not believing something is an accomplishment in and of itself. Anyone who thinks that they are inherently good or intelligent for not believing in God is just as ignorant as a religious zealot.

[–]Bigbuddhabelly -1 points0 points ago

Id rather believe I am inherently good than be told I was born of sin and need to spend the rest of my life seeking forgiveness.

[–]thefran -1 points0 points ago

I'd rather know who I really am than believe I am inherently good.

[–]Bigbuddhabelly 0 points1 point ago

I'd also like to know what happens when I die but guess what?....we dont.

[–]thefran 0 points1 point ago

We do have evidence that we have to struggle with evil, rather than being inherently good. Being bad to people is out first nature, our animal nature.

But you can believe to the contrary, as a rational skeptic.

[–]Bigbuddhabelly 0 points1 point ago

Good and bad are societal terms. They have no baring in nature.

[–]thefran 0 points1 point ago

First off: society is a part of nature.

Second: are you kidding me? Altruism and egoism are objective terms.

[–]Bigbuddhabelly 0 points1 point ago

society is a part of nature

A society is a system with a distinctive culture and institutions. Institutions do not exist in nature.

[–]thefran 0 points1 point ago

Everything exists in nature.

[–]Bigbuddhabelly 0 points1 point ago

Communism exists in nature?

[–]xdzgor 17 points18 points ago

Honestly, if you believe that it was purely "religion" that was the background to the shooting of the girl, then you'd better think again.

[–]MachShot 13 points14 points ago

Yes, the Taliban is a complex sociology-economic political ideology independent of it's interpretation of the Koran.

[–]AFewSecondsAgoDouche 1 point2 points ago

Hey hey hey now, don't you be bringing your rationality in here with you. /r/atheism may not know much about Islam, but it knows it's baaaddd and that everyone and anyone who follows it is an extremist and potential terrorist, or at least that's what it has been told and FUCK YOU if you're going to try and mess with its beliefs.

You accept the words of these 15 year old rejects who spend their time pasting quotes over pictures of authors whose books they're too lazy to actually read or you fuck off and die you oppressive fundamentalist neo-nazi.

[–]xdzgor 1 point2 points ago

Sorry.

[–]runner64 0 points1 point ago

No one said that all religious people are extremists and terrorists. Just that this weeks instance of terrorism was perpetrated by religious folks. Sorry if thats not sarcastic enough for you.

[–]David1337 14 points15 points ago

Why do people always think that Science and Religion are comparable, when they cearly arent? What about the Catholics and Jews that invest heavily in Science and promote its progress (for the most part). Are they against science as well? No because thats a contradiction. We need to separate Religion and Idiots, because they are clearly two different things. Religion isnt against science, idiots are. Anyone who thinks that they in some way have anything to do with each other is a fucking moron.

[–]jonneyboy45 -3 points-2 points ago

They both claim to know how our universe came to be, how is this not comparable?

[–]guysimseriously 2 points3 points ago

Dear r/atheism,

Posting the same thing in different styles doesn't make it original. We have seen this quote with screenshots from FB, Twitter, Instagram, on pictures, and everything else. Stop fucking posting it and upvoting it.

Yours, Everybody else

[–]MIKEoxinurface 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. I was thinking I seen this quote the other day... but it certainly wasn't Ricky Gervais who said it. A lot of hypocrisy going around on Reddit it would seem.

[–]wait-for-it-dary 0 points1 point ago

Why does he (and r/atheism) think religion and science rule out each other? If not most, at least many religious people don't have any kind of problem with science.

[–]donaldrc3 0 points1 point ago

Whoa this again I'm surpised to see the same material in r/atheism time and time again... not.

[–]AFewSecondsAgoDouche 0 points1 point ago

Fair play to /r/atheism for upvoting this to the front page without actually checking that it was posted by Gervais in the first place.

For a bunch of people so insistent on calling themselves intellectuals and scientists who live in the world of facts, you don't do very well to back it up.

[–]LocalMadman 0 points1 point ago

BOOM HEADSHOT!

Wait...

[–]c64glen 0 points1 point ago

So when a child is killed by an unmanned drone, who gets the blame for that? Religion or Science?

[–]frog_avenger 0 points1 point ago

Today i saw a repost of a rpost.

[–]notsurewhatiam 0 points1 point ago

I'm a religious guy, and I love science.

Fuck me right?

[–]alectheman 0 points1 point ago

Dear science, you killed millions of people with a bomb and we get killed for no reason ,

                         Yours Religions

[–]digestif 0 points1 point ago

39km above ground is still not space. Not even close.

[–]roobosh 2 points3 points ago

Shit like this just pisses me off. What is basically being said is 'Humanity did this and another part of humanity did this'. People are people, religion isn't the supernatural corrupting force a lot of you, somewhat ironically, seem to believe it is.

[–]Mitchel1497 0 points1 point ago

I finally realized I don't care about religion or athiesm

[–]Aitamen 0 points1 point ago

So you're going to explain why so many religious parents are authoritarian, then, if not for religion? About the fact that religious people are generally happier despite achieving less on average? The fact that said authoritarian parenting causes gay kids to be homophobes because they were told, essentially, that they were terrible people?

And that's just in the secular US... how about the beheadings, executions, and public beatings in islamic countries because of their governments being based on outdated moral code, and their inability (or possibly lack of desire) to advance in science in certain fields therefrom?

[–]leighahall -1 points0 points ago

I'm not sure what's going on with this here. He definitely did tweet this using his account because I saw it this morning and retweeted it. I was talking to someone about it and tried to find it again, but it had disappeared. Even my retweet has disappeared. I don't really know how this would happen.

[–]barrypickles 3 points4 points ago

same people who did 9-11 bro. be afraid.

[–]Jungle_Bob -1 points0 points ago

umbrella?

[–]Davedz -1 points0 points ago

He realised it was a bullshit comment and deleted it

[–]skeletor100[!] 6 points7 points ago

And then again the Nazi Eugenics program was done in the name of science. How about we stop with the apples to oranges comparisons?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]TechSgtChen 4 points5 points ago

"Science" describes a particular decision-making tree that can be used for anything. Everyone exhibiting non-random decision-making uses a form a science. The guy who shot the girl used "science" to learn how to aim and shoot his gun through trial, observation of error, and repeated retrial with adjusted parameters.

The fact that "science" is used should not be an automatic basis for praise; the motivations and outcome of a person's actions are a better means of judgement.

[–]Jungle_Bob 0 points1 point ago

but did science aim the gun or did a person compelled by religion simply utilizing a small niche of science aim it?

[–]TechSgtChen 5 points6 points ago

People here personify and idolize this abstract idea of "Science" a lot. Science didn't aim the gun and neither did religion. A man influenced by religion and using the tenets of science aimed the gun. Science is any non-random decision-making algorithm. Religion is a set of beliefs or assumptions. The two [religion and science] aren't the same type of thing. The opposite of science here would be random behavior. So if the guy wasn't using science or personal knowledge gained through science, he would have randomly poked at the gun, perhaps discharging it, perhaps not. Using scientific reasoning, he predicted that he could achieve his aim - killing the girl - by shooting her with a gun. He predicted that he could do this by pulling the trigger.

[–]barrypickles -3 points-2 points ago

This is the most ignorant convoluted nonsensical piece of doublethink shit I have ever read. Go fuck yourself.

[–]poor_username 0 points1 point ago

This the 4th version of this I've seen today.

[–]tombiship 2 points3 points ago

Dear Science,

I rescued children from slavery, fed hungry people, cared for the old and lonely, helped people to let go of their pasts and forgive themselves. You spent millions of dollars on a stunt. Yours, Religion

[–]swire -1 points0 points ago

Only Reddit you see someone repost a repost on another site...

Either way that isn't the Twitter font...

[–]Jake_91_420 -1 points0 points ago

How many times is this same sentence going to be posted? I mean FUCKING HELL.

[–]ecstaticMedium -1 points0 points ago

I don't even care about a guy falling from space. Is there ANY practical use to this?

[–]Gaolbreaker -1 points0 points ago

Hey, my religion wants people to go to school too ... I think. I don't check in that often so I could be wrong.

[–]Water_Resistant -1 points0 points ago

Dear science, how many people did you kill in Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Or in the German concentration camps? On in any of the many many other wars?

Don't get me wrong I love science. But this claim is just a little too silly.

[–]hellakevin -1 points0 points ago

if religion can somehow manifest hands and a gun, and then use them to shoot people, I think that would be more incentive to become a follower.

[–]jonneyboy45 -1 points0 points ago

Since when does an extreme sport become science? yes he broke the sound barrier but nothing scientific at all came from it

[–]Evis03 0 points1 point ago

Things like this just don't happen. It's trying new 'extreme' things like this, the moon landing and so forth that tend to lead to the biggest jumps in knowledge and techniques.

[–]jonneyboy45 -1 points0 points ago

I'm not saying this isn't one of the coolest things i've ever seen (Because it defiantly is), its just that he went up in a balloon wearing a flight suit. Nothing of scientific merit came from what he did. Landing a man on the moon took years of research, invention and study. That had scientific merit

[–]supasteve013 -1 points0 points ago

Repost x5

[–]gibson_ -1 points0 points ago

Was it science that was also responsible for unit 731 or are we not claiming that one in the same way that Catholics wouldn't claim shooting a girl in the head as part of their "thing"?

[–]braumeister -1 points0 points ago

A) The Kármán line, the commonly used boundary between Earth and space, is located a full 38 miles above where Baumgartner jumped. He jumped from the middle of the stratosphere. Remarkable, yes. Space, no.

B) "Religion" and "Science" are not anthropomorphized entities that you can haphazardly assign man's responsibilities or actions to.

C) Ricky Gervais didn't tweet this.

I get the feeling that there's a massive slew of trolls out there posting this stuff just to see what you guys will upvote.

[–]fegd -1 points0 points ago

Seriously, we got it. It's probably the tenth time I see that fucking post here in two days, in different interpretations.

[–]madeinttown -1 points0 points ago

So a joke on reddit gets posted on Ricky's twitter and then posted back onto reddit. Does that count as recycling?

[–]XxGirxX 0 points1 point ago

The term you're looking for is Repost.

[–]ibought_theapp -1 points0 points ago

Skydiving is science now? Ok

[–]st4irway2kevin -1 points0 points ago

Science helped create guns in the first place.

[–]Snagdooku -1 points0 points ago

Let's take a really cool day for science, and a really terrible day for religion, and compare them to each other!

[–]ofmouseandman -1 points0 points ago

This is a reddit bomerang. I saw this on reddit, then Ricky Gervais tweeted it. Of course then I saw it on Faceook. And now it's ack on reddit.

[–]Zai_shanghai -1 points0 points ago

Am I the only one reading this on a phone who pushed the upper-left-hand corner "home" button (in the PICTURE) more than once trying to go back? I'll see myself out.

[–]NegativeGPA -1 points0 points ago

I'm really not a fan of when non scientists like to take credit for scientific discoveries. Hell, imagine if a biologist took credit for something related to quantum gravity. It's just silliness

[–]The_Philosophisor -1 points0 points ago

Religion didn't shoot a little girl. Religious people did. Science didn't make a man jump, but rather the man chose to take the leap.

When will /r/atheism take the leap into not being a circlejerk?

[–]khast 0 points1 point ago

Well, that's not quite a good analogy.

A lot of people depend on science for one thing or another. Do you depend on your car as transportation? How about a bus? Or do you just walk? Well, the first 2 science had played a part...and you chose to use them. Do you do anything dangerous, but know that because of something that the aid of science has made it safe(r)...is this still a "thing" to say.. "Well you chose to do that."

Religion on the other hand is brainwashing weak minded people, who are gullible enough to believe that school is a bad place for children and that the dimwit who actually believes this shoots his child for having a desire to do something that he believes is evil because of something his religion has told him was bad.....I place the blame purely in the hands of religion for filling the mind of this person with bullshit that was coincidentally taken too literal.

We're sorry, this ride is for people THIS tall...keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times. We aren't responsible for any mental illnesses that may occur as a direct result of this ride. Have a nice ride.

[–]dradam168 -1 points0 points ago

Wow, stupid content from Reddit (maybe) [re-]Tweeted by a huge douche. How could you NOT love it?

[–]johnnysbigday -1 points0 points ago

Turns out celebrities are reposters, too.

[–]halotwo2 -1 points0 points ago

Did religion do that, or evil men?

[–]landl0rd -1 points0 points ago

Oh look, Ricky Gervais made a biting comment about religion, while glorifying science. That's a new one.

[–]mitt2012 -1 points0 points ago

I think all the credit goes to Red Bull for this one.

[–]scottphris -1 points0 points ago

Rick Gervais is too smart to say something so ignorant..

[–]SonnyBlack90 0 points1 point ago

Dear Science: Stop polluting the Earth and destroying the biosphere. Stop making bombs to kill people. Stop promoting eugenics and racism. Stop discovering new ways to inflict pain on people

Yours, religion.

This isn't hard. Science and religion are both tools for man, and they both produce great evils. Herp its almost like its the human and not the tool.

[–]captain9 0 points1 point ago

Maybe if ricky spent half the time actually studying science then he does talking about it he could actually accomplish something

[–]FuckYeaALright 0 points1 point ago

Ok Ricky we get it. There is no god. You can stop now

[–]caroline_ 1 point2 points ago

TIL that people will believe and be okay with an offensive statement if they believe it was written by a prominent Atheist Comedian. And then you get upvotes.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]painperdu 0 points1 point ago

Why do religions make such claims as moral authority and absolute adherence? Science makes no such claim. If it did then it wouldn't be science . . ., it would be religion.

Even worse, if an entity makes the claim that it is absolutely good then does something that is bad then that entity is absolutely bad. No way to get around this condition.

[–]tyy365 -1 points0 points ago

Dear Ricky Gervais,

I dont pretend to be a pompous english douche so dont pretend to be a scientist.

Not yours,

Science

[–]ThatCoolBlackGuy 0 points1 point ago

So because the muslims did it...its all of the religions?

[–]Demojen 1 point2 points ago

No way. A comedian ripping off someone elses jokes on the internet?

[–]parko4 -2 points-1 points ago

oh stop it u ignorant people, this is just ridiculous. not every god damn muslim are crazy extremists. this is just outright racist and really offending

[–]toadbearman -3 points-2 points ago

Upvote! Upvote! A million times Upvote!

[–]sprodigy -2 points-1 points ago

Was the shooting even religiously motivated? I did a quick Google and found that it was the result of a practical joke gone wrong. I'm confused.

The wanted an education, she got shot for it because she stood up to them when they told her in the name of Islam she shouldn't go to school

The funny thing is that if you point out that this is actually due to many Middle Eastern countries having a dysfunctional shit-tier culture of little value then left-wingers tend to get upset.

I Cannot wait til Romney and Ryan are running this country and they get rid of all atheists! We need people of strong Faith in control of this beautiful country. GOD is the Answer to all. You are all so lost and I will pray you gain back control of your lives and find God's path for you!
