regardless if he wants the title or not, he fits my (and i would think most peoples) definition of an agnostic atheist.
[–]Battlesheep 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago
He is, he just doesn't want to say it because he knows he'll literally get lynched by fundies
[–]DiogenesHoSinopeus -1 points0 points1 point 24 days ago
He explains it the best
[–]bebobli -1 points0 points1 point 25 days ago
He doesn't believe in any deities. Makes him an atheist to me and most others. His reason for not taking the label is purely political.

Agnostic?
[–]farhannibal 4 points5 points6 points 25 days ago*
According to him, he doesn't like labels because everyone can have different opinion / values. When you're labeled it's easy for people to assign all the properties and beliefs of that label to you. That being said, if anything, he identifies the most with agnosticism.
EDIT: spelling

Maybe we could just have a 'bot to post "What does this have to with atheism?" to every post in r/atheism just to get it out of the way.
[–]Unrelated_To_Atheism 25 points26 points27 points 25 days ago
You can always rely on me, sometimes.
[–]augystyle 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago
you are the hero reddit deserves, just not the one /r/atheism wants right now. keep up the good work
[–]GMNightmare 12 points13 points14 points 25 days ago
But think of all that karma wasted on a bot...
[–]UnholyDemigod 8 points9 points10 points 25 days ago
Or maybe the mods could get off their fucken arses and remove posts that are unrelated.
[–]GMNightmare 5 points6 points7 points 25 days ago
They did that for /r/onlyatheism. That subreddit is going places! Only posts that strictly deal with atheism.
[–]JonnyRichter 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago
The top mod of /r/atheism has already made it very clear that it won't happen. He wants this sub to be completely democratic with its posts, which means mods are not the deciders of what does and doesn't fit; because technically speaking, the only thing that actually does relate to atheism is "I don't believe in God."
[–]dirice87 6 points7 points8 points 25 days ago
even if it did have something to do with atheism, isn't a bit hyperbolic to use an asteroid as a reason to explore space?
[–]Kai_Daigoji 19 points20 points21 points 25 days ago
I'm starting to think I was wrong - atheism just means science themed circle jerk. Neil Degrasse Tyson Carl Sagan Bill Nye Richard Dawkins.
[–]TheActualAWdeV 16 points17 points18 points 25 days ago

Normally I'm on the side of the lax (making fun of God? Sure, why the hell not. Christians being dicks to gays? I'll allow it). However, NASA's budgetary concerns aren't even because of religion. They're because Mars doesn't fight back. This isn't even a little related.
[–]RobotBuddha[] 19 points20 points21 points 25 days ago
Honestly, when the only point of it being posted is because of name recognition from a man who DOSN'T WANT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH US? It's a pretty important question to ask.
[–]Kai_Daigoji 6 points7 points8 points 25 days ago

Maybe because none of these posts are about atheism?
[–]G8r 7 points8 points9 points 25 days ago*
If you think the Earth was created six thousand years ago, that it is the divinely-protected center of the universe, and that it will be blown away by its creator Real Soon Now, then long-term stuff like asteroid impacts and global extinction events are just science fiction to you. You'll never vote for someone who will spend your money on programs to study it, you'll never choose a career path that will make any difference about it, and you'll never teach your kids to accept any responsibility for it.
Atheists don't believe in deus ex machina evacuation plans, so we tend to take such things a little more seriously.
Now, if God told an angel to tell the Pope that an asteroid were about to destroy Heaven, well, Christians might see the situation a bit differently.
[–]farangiyeparsi 4 points5 points6 points 25 days ago
Those imminent apocalypse theories are a product of Anglo-American evangelical Christianity. The Vatican has an astronomy program ffs.

[–]Ampage86 10 points11 points12 points 25 days ago
Which the ops post qualifies as neither
[–]Chumbolex 3 points4 points5 points 25 days ago
When I see things like this post I think how wonderful the atheists you guys must meet are. I know a few atheists around my way, and they don't really know shit about science. Actually, they don't know shit about shit. We just smoke weed and get drunk together. I don't believe in god, they don't believe in god, but if we were to chart it out, I think together we probably have about enough scientific information to fail 10th grade biology. Why are two always (science and atheism) linked together?
[–]AtlasSCII 15 points16 points17 points 25 days ago
Why do that when we can circlejerk about it not belonging in r/atheism?
[–]FairvalueBonds 5 points6 points7 points 25 days ago

[–]Hibno 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago
Seriously, the number of posts complaining about what shouldn't be included in /r/atheism is making the comment threads on this subreddit a little intolerable.
[–]pornmonger 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago

[–]FantomEx 12 points13 points14 points 25 days ago
An asteroid can wipe out religion quite easily and religion will expect science to save it and thank god if its successful.
[–]DrJesusSingh 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago
An asteroid can also wipe out a brave atheist.
[–]cmilla 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago

Because people need to stop believing in silly fictional gods and thinking they get to go to some magic place when they die. Life is fucking amazing and short-lived. They need to realize that space travel is life on Earth's only chance at continued survival. So I think it has a lot to do with religion.
[–]eat-your-corn-syrup 0 points1 point2 points 24 days ago
dinosaurs were atheists.
[–]RobotBuddha[] 73 points74 points75 points 25 days ago
It sometimes amazes me that I actually used to defend this subreddit. It really is almost entirely just people not in any active scientific research patting themselves on the back for scientific innovation, sucking Neil Degrasse Tyson's dick, posting facebook screenshop of the sick burns people threw at often nice christian friends, and reposting tired memes and quotes.
I'm sticking around for the 1% of content that's worthwhile, but damn. How are more people not outright embarrassed to be associated with this shit? 2200 upvotes, really?
[–]mauser5 9 points10 points11 points 25 days ago

I love the space program and want it to grow by leaps and bounds, but is this really a convincing argument?
Large asteroids impact the Earth about 1 every 10 million years source. We have difficulty retooling industries for global warming and relating that to a world livable by "our children's children", maybe 100-200 years out. How responsible is it to make a hail mary mission to leave Earth for an event with a probability in any given year of 1 x 10-7 ?
[–]BearDown1983 4 points5 points6 points 25 days ago
Welcome to 1999 RQ36: A 500m diameter asteroid with a 1 in 2500 chance of impacting the earth sometime between the years 2150 and 2200.
[–]maxaemilianus 4 points5 points6 points 25 days ago
"Large asteroids impact the Earth about 1 every 10 million years."
That's not like a guaranteed Mean Time Between Asteroids . . . the next one could appear in our telescopes tomorrow. If we're not even somewhat prepared for it, we are SCREWED. There is no backup plan.
If you want to truly experience the horror of such a thing, you should watch the film Melancholia. Talk about an unblinking stare at armageddon.
And speaking of which, using oil drillers to blow up an asteroid will just shower the planet with smaller, equally-destructive asteroids. We actually need a very long-term plan to deal with a potential impact. Something that would move the WHOLE asteroid enough to miss us, and that takes YEARS of pre-planning.
[–]EpicShowery 6 points7 points8 points 25 days ago
the next one could appear in our telescopes tomorrow.
If only there was a way of predicting the trajectory of celestial bodies...
[–]WoollyMittens 12 points13 points14 points 25 days ago
You have to spot them before you can predict their trajectory. Spotting them takes money.
[–]Snapperhead 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
I have faith that an asteroid will impact the Earth too. Not even those so-called Astronomers with their telescopes will know the time and the place of his return. We must prepare now for the second coming of the Dinosaur Killer Asteroid lest all of our scientific knowledge be lost in the darkness to follow.
[–]solidSC 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago
Neil has given convincing arguments that are promptly ignored. Now... Say your son is wearing that shirt... Then you might actually have to talk about it. Which is a nice start.
[–]Reddit-Hivemind 1 point2 points3 points 22 days ago
Can you link me to the more convincing arguments? I know technologies have come from the space program, but I'm looking for studies or other metrics showing how convincing the space program is.
[–]solidSC 0 points1 point2 points 22 days ago
I'm not sure where to start looking to be perfectly honest. The vast majority of the Neil specific videos I find are the few of his most popular ones, obviously. But I can say with certainty that the space program does things for humanity that go unseen in everyday life. It inspires people to be scientists and engineers which sadly is a declining field. Technologies we never would have approached before get funding and ultimately get monetized into products for people including everything from entertainment to transportation and medicine. In my opinion (which isn't worth a lot) the space program improves the quality of life for people on Earth more than anything else it impacts.
But to address your point - I don't really thing this T-shirt has anything to do with Neil other than just his name being a big Upvote sponge on this subreddit. I personally like it just to draw the attention to the conversation in the first place.
I appreciate your reply and I would love to further the conversation in the future.
[–]Bennyboy1337 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
I see your point and can agree with it on many levels, but the fact is a large magnitude impact might be the most convicing argument for some people. Sure there is global warming and a growing population problem that may spiral out of control and causes who knows what type of chaos from war and climate change, but that isn't anywhere near as devastating as a large astroid which has the potential the eradicate the human race.
Yes the probility is extreamly low, but it's the most probable even to cause the extenction of the entire human species, and on some levels is the most convicing argument for space investment.
[–]jcmcbeth 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
Even if it does happen, where are you going to go? Mars? The moon? How big does the asteroid need to be where the conditions and cost are more favorable on Mars than just weathering the storm?
[–]mexicodoug 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago
It would make more sense if we experimented with ways to change the trajectories of asteroids, so if we detected one coming toward Earth we'd simply give it a trajectory change, a routine procedure we had already practiced until perfect.
[–]lisb 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
I agree. Most of the extinction events of the past have been because of global warming, not extinction events. (Reference: Under A Green Sky by Peter Ward) I'm not saying the space program is bad, I think we need more invested in the sciences overall (Which Neil agrees with also). We could probably recover from an asteroid, but not from an extinction event to the scale and duration of the ones in the past due to global warming.
[–]Blindweb 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
Yes. It is well known we are utterly unprepared for the change from an oil based global economy to a sustainable one. (Prepartion had to start 10 years before peak conventional oil, i.e., 1995). Billions will die if nothing is done. The fight over resources will lead to WWIII. The pieces for war have been moving for a decade now with it becoming increasingly obvious in the last couple years.
Neil Degrasse Tyson fits the definition of nerd to a T... Very intelligent with rigorous rational analysis in a certain field, but totally unaware of macroevents and systems and an expert in increasing irrelevant fantasy land escapism garbage.
Come on your basing neil's entire though process on a twitter post.

The biggest threat to humanity is well... humanity. But even though they are able to track all these asteroids eventually something will be missed. I still cant believe how much money and resources are spent to defend ourselves from other human beings, yet objects flying around space that destroyed most of the life on this planet in the past is not a big deal.

Asteroids don't kill you, rogue planets and black holes will. But since I am a numbers guy(don't mistake me for Paul Ryan), I'd say while you and your great great great great grand children will probably will never see it, it will eventually hit anytime from now until it ends.

Also there is no God.
You cut out the key portion of this quote that actually made it relevant here.

Is there a way to donate directly to a space program, namely, the U.S. Space Program?
P.S. - I'm not sure what this post has to do with atheism.
[–]dinofaggot 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
We didn't ignore it, guys. Our space program was coming along fabulously. We just got a little side tracked, is all.
[–]doctorquanta 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
Damn you nature, you cocky bastard.
[–]facaDe577 -1 points0 points1 point 25 days ago
My only regret is that I have but one upvote to give.
[–]TheManOfTomorrow 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
You'd need one hell of a space program to contend with an asteroid of that size. Something like that would melt the Earth. Good thing there's a gargantuan rocket with which to escape.

If only the Federal Government was in charge of things that go into the air, there would only be one airline: Amtrak Air. What's wrong with SpaceX?

I actually know him! he is a great guy, and he LOVES the media attention he gets, and reddit! Do you guys think I should ask him to do a AMA the next time I see him? Oh, and this is completely true. I actually know him
[–]MoonshineDan -1 points0 points1 point 25 days ago
I wonder if there would be religious opposition to mass evacuation? God wants us to end and all that.
[–]vercing3torix 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
Dinosaurs would make terrible astronauts, silly.
[–]houndoftindalos 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
The Big Crunch: Nature's way of saying "You're dead no matter what you do. FUCK YOU!"
[–]Shuaijan 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
Why is this in atheism?
[–]crbowles 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
Because NDT, burden of proof, lgbt, science, logical fallacy, any other generic response on this subreddit!
[–]Shuaijan 0 points1 point2 points 14 days ago
Please look the /r/atheism pg, then repeat.

T-Rex ordered this as a t shirt so he could warn people, but he couldn't use his arms to pull it over his head.
[–]evil_steve 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
Ha, stupid dinosaurs
[–]xsited1 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago
That's blatantly false. Everyone knows evolved dinosaurs left Earth more than 65 million years earlier for the delta quadrant.
[–]golergka 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago
It's sad because there are no way in hell we're going to be able to evacuate humanity out of here, even during several years. Noah's Ark style evacuation yes, but most of us are going to die on this planet one way or another.
[–]Derpybro 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
There would be mass suicides, wars, lots and lots of orgies, honestly, it'd be like Vegas.
[–]Dynamo-Hum 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
We could save at least 40 people! Until the oxygen ran out anyway...
[–]Sinistersmog 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
This guy is a serial re-poster FYI. Check out his post history, not a hint of OC to be found.

To begin with, I personally enjoy space exploration. I really hope the way to make it profitable will be found during my life, and I want to promote it. Otherwise, I'd like to make money and spend it on space just because it's goddamn awesome.
However, let's be honest. Suppose, 1000 dwell permanently on Mars. That's a really unfriendly place. These people need to live in airtight modules. Since the level of ionizing radiation on the Martian surface is around twice higher that that on the orbit of the ISS, the modules must be buried in a few feet below the ground or must be made of thick metal. Walking on the surface without a space suit (remember: almost no atmosphere there) is impossible. The life supporting system of the modules must be fully closed: there's almost no gaseous oxygen; there is no liquid water, and ice is hard to mine; you can probably extract some aluminum by electrolyzing the soil. Oops, your energy supply is also very limited. It is still uncertain if there's uranium ore on Mars; the concentration of uranium in Martian rocks is 5 ppm at most, while uranium ore contains up to 100 ppm. The solar constant on Mars is only one half of that on the Earth, and don't forget about frequent sandstorms impeding the solar flux even more. Thus, solar arrays won't produce an abundance of energy as well. Well, forget about electrolyzing the soil when you need energy to live. If your power supply fails, your life supporting system will die, and so do you. Depressurisation of the module means death as well. With thiner atmosphere and in the absence of heavy Moon, which deflects a lot of asteroids, being stroke by a meteorite is not an improbable scenario.
Now, what exact global disaster on the Earth would leave only 1000 people on the Earth and make them survive in conditions more severe than described above? These conditions must me much more severe. Otherwise, it would be more efficient to build such a base on the Earth. One base probably won't resist a direct hit of an asteroid. However, with all the earthly construction facilities we can build several bases, each of those would resist a hit of any asteroid in any other place. We can do it for much less money and save much more people.

[–]GMBeats95 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
Wasn't this posted about 3 months ago because NDT had tweeted it? Either OP is really behind on his twitter feed or he's reposting things with the same title.

An ideal propaganda poster for our society.
[–]wolfchimneyrock -1 points0 points1 point 25 days ago
What evidence do we have that the dinosaurs didn't invent spacecraft and colonize the planets around epsilon eridani?
[–]dkrypt 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago
The space program is cheap and underfunded and the people who run it signed on to No Nukes In Space so we can't defend against that asteroid.
[–]SubtleMockery -1 points0 points1 point 25 days ago
Nature is not an entity, it can't ask questions.
Except for when Sagan says something about us being the universe experiencing ourselves then it's atheism!
[–]ashmole -1 points0 points1 point 25 days ago
False. Nature is not a singular entity nor is it sentient.
[–]JamoWRage 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago
I don't see how this is relevant to the nonexistence of "godlike" beings...
[–]THE___Doctor___ 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago
The dinosaurs did not ignore the space program. I found some in a space ship not too long ago. However, it WAS a space ship stolen by a time travelling mad man. Oh, but not me. I mean, I am a time travelling mad man, but this man was a different time travelling mad man.
