  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It makes me sad seeing people cut down such an ancient and gorgeous tree. That tree would probably still be thriving today if they hadn't killed it.

Said the man typing on a computer or smartphone filled with toxic metals that required invasive strip mining which destroyed entire ecosystems. Also, while sitting at a desk made of wood in a building made of wood with various sheets of wood-pulp paper surrounding him.

As long as a new tree is planted in its place and the amount of new growth vs cut growth is kept equal, there's nothing wrong with logging and it's how society functions.

I think I should have been more specific. I don't really mind logging at all, so long as its done in an environmentally sound way.

I just get bummed when I see people go into old growth forests and cut down those massive redwoods that are centuries old.

[–]barryicide 1 point2 points ago

You're acting like they deliberately went into these forests and said "FUCK TREES, WOOOOO!!!" and started ripping them all down with mechanized "tree raping" machines. The redwood forests were massive forests:

In 1850, old-growth redwood forest covered more than 2,000,000 acres (8,100 km2) of the California coast.

The cities needed wood for the rapidly expanding world thanks to industrialization. They went to the closest wood source - the massive redwood forests. This was before a "conservation" mindset existed; natural resources were thought of as "limitless". They likely thought "there's no way we'll ever cut down all these trees" - and after several decades of doing so, they had put a good dent in the forest. In the early 1900's they worked on conservation efforts and most of the redwood forests became protected. There was no malice behind this and these men were just feeding their families and harvesting wood used by everyone in society.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

[–]barryicide 1 point2 points ago

Agreed. The gift of foresight is rare.

You just reminded me of this awesome YouTube video. Kinda random but if you got about 15 minutes to spare its really good.

Minnesota was basically destroyed by logging. The ecosystem left up north is a pathetic shell of what it was before this happened.

The logging was orchestrated by people such as JP Morgan to make a profit. Yes, the people doing the logging were uneducated Scandinavian immigrants feeding their families. So what?

[–]louky 0 points1 point ago

I'm a homeless old man typing on a recycled solar powered phone (check my history) and they fucked the fucking hell out of those woods.

A multimillion acre monocrop treefarm is not a fucking forest.

As long as a new tree is planted in its place and the amount of new growth vs cut growth is kept equal, there's nothing wrong with logging and it's how society functions.

Which is something that has never happened in human history and will never happen. So what's your point there?

[–]antibread -3 points-2 points ago

lol, this is great. just because its how 'society functions' and mustardmcguff is existing within this cultural occupation doesnt mean that it isnt a sad picture. its a sad picture.

Fuck yeah, that place I'm from.

I'm probably related to one of those old-timey idiots.

[–]areneir 0 points1 point ago

this photo used up all my computer pixels

[–]joelav 0 points1 point ago

some of those chips are big enough to square um and make boxes out of

[–]cloral 0 points1 point ago

What's crazy is, as far as redwoods go, those are the small trees. Anybody who has been up to the Sequoias will know what I mean.

[–]pacoliketaco 1 point2 points ago

Lumberjacks. Dressing better than the majority of american teenagers since the 1900's.

[–]CletusHemingway 0 points1 point ago

These guys are fucking lumberjacks and they're dressed better than half of the guys I work in an office with.
