Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Submission Rules

Is your post not showing up? Do not delete it. Wait 5 minutes to give AutoModerator a chance to look at it; it approves most submissions automatically. If it hasn't shown up after more than 5 minutes, simply message the moderators and ask us to let it through.

The only thing I've been able to confirm by playing QWOP is that contacting the track with your taint is a disqualification in track and field.

[–]ThatGuyYouKindaKnow 2 points3 points ago

As a frequenter of /r/nocontext, I approve this post.

contacting the track with your taint is a disqualification in track and field.

...is a suitable submission!

[–]dentinacar 2 points3 points ago

This is stupid, the context is right in the damn comment. It says hes talking about QWOP.

[–]Effthebitch 3 points4 points ago

Well fine. Sorry. But I have to ask, don't you see partial comments in r/nocontext frequently? That's often what makes it funny. Part of a comment taken out of context. That's the whole point. If you posted the entirety of the comment in context, then it would just be r/context.

What I don't understand is why everyone thinks he is so angry, saying "What the fuck," when all he is doing is reciting lovely Shakespeare.

[–]hoopopotamus 7 points8 points ago

Shakespeare would use "what the fuck" if he were around today. He wasn't writing for fancy people.

[–]GeneralWarts 4 points5 points ago

I should just follow this gif around plugging reactiongifsarchive.

From what I remember the audio with the original video for this is amazing. If anyone has the original video I would love a link. (Looking for it now.)

Well that was easy... (Enters, "Boy can't kick ball" on youtube.)

Kid Can't Kick Ball

[–]goal2004 181 points182 points ago

You wouldn't mind me hijacking your comment to explain what's happening here, would you?

As you can see there is one player that gets knocked down with his legs flying up and his body getting twisted sideways and lands on the ground. Once that player is down and starts his getting up animation other characters seem to bump into him like he's a solid rock, whereas players that experience collisions with other players both transfer the forces equally and react appropriately to the simulation.

So it's really just that the simulation was turned off on the player getting up, possibly because they couldn't get it to work right in 100% of cases when it was enabled.

[–]JakalDX 23 points24 points ago

I really can't fathom why you're in the negative. Informative reply!

[–]goal2004 55 points56 points ago

Some people think that if you're not trying to be funny you're some kind of a troll.

I don't care about that, though. I'm just hoping other game developers here (be it programmers or even QA guys) who didn't see this and were scratching their heads trying to figure out why would something like this happen.

The thing is that to non-developers a lot of bugs seem trivial because a lot of how a game works is magical to them. To me, as a programmer, it's fun to try and identify bugs in other people's work. There's a lot to gain from honing those "bug hunting" skills for people in this industry.

[–]DinosaurierSindCool 3 points4 points ago

If there was a subreddit or some kind of website about bugs like these I would read the crap out of it.

[–]goal2004 5 points6 points ago

[–]d0105950 135 points136 points ago

Honest question: how are the FIFA games? I'm not a huge fan of football, but I love good games no matter the sport.

[–]PhoneDojo[S] 263 points264 points ago

It's pretty fantastic, and they manage to make it better every year.

[–]seventhaxis 45 points46 points ago

Are incidents like this isolated? Rare? This (and all the others I see from EA titles) does not really have me wanting to buy FIFA again.

Edit: Great responses; much appreciated.

[–]rodut 158 points159 points ago

I've been playing FIFA for almost 20 years (since FIFA'94 I believe). The last ~3 FIFA games are excellent and seem to only get better each year.

While this kind of incident, in FIFA13 for example, seems to occur more frequently than in FIFA12 (I assume it's because of the new physics system), they're definitely rare and not game-breaking. Just spontaneously hilarious.

PS: I play FIFA on PC/PS3, no idea how it works on xbox and others.

[–]mdrelich90 73 points74 points ago

I've also never seen it happen on this scale which is what makes it so funny. The most that has ever happened to me was a third player fell down from the first two involved in the tackle.

[–]rodut 39 points40 points ago

Same here. I love these glitches so much, I kinda envy folks who get 3+ players involved in this type of hilarity.

[–]BardtheBowman 28 points29 points ago

I swing between tickled and infuriated with a referee causes/gets involved in a glitch like this. On the one hand, the referee is getting dogpiled, which is amusing and satisfying. On the other hand, DON'T FUCKING LIE THERE GET UP THEY NOW HAVE A CHANCE ON GOAL YOU FUCKMUNCHES.

[–]edude45 6 points7 points ago

The ref can get knocked down? That man is a brick wall for me. He always gets in my way when I'm trying to run for a ball. Especially when he's jogging. You havr to stop and just go around him.

[–]BardtheBowman 10 points11 points ago

If he gets hit with enough players, sometimes he clips into the floor. Technically, he's not "knocked down," but half his body is under the grass.

[–]splineReticulator 6 points7 points ago

I'm not a big fan of sports or sports games, but it seems like the latest fifa games seem to be doing actual rag-doll physics such that players are realistically colliding with other players and the ball?

Which fifa did they start this with?

[–]fedex09 16 points17 points ago

Fifa 12 if I'm not mistaken.

[–]isthat_edward_towers 4 points5 points ago

confirmed. They called it impact engine or collision engine if I'm not mistaken.

[–]butth0lez 12 points13 points ago

I did a pass play where the player runs up right after he passes and he ran straight into the goalie knocking him down. Easy goal. My opponent rage quit.

[–]cqdemal 24 points25 points ago

Hmm, personally I haven't seen any major physics cock-ups in FIFA 13 at all. However, there are a lot more game-changing incidents caused by - for the lack of a better word - the game's sheer randomness, which is a very good thing. A bad first touch can turn a routine backpass into a goal for the opposition. I've had my AI keeper hack the ball into the head of an onrushing striker and back into the net. I've had super-lucky multi-deflection goals. I've seen a one-on-one shot stopped by both posts because my striker was just the tiniest bit off balance.

It's a little too fast to be called genuinely realistic, but it's the best approximation of how a pulsating 90-minute game feels like when compressed into 12 minutes.

[–]Laxman259 13 points14 points ago

this is one of the best descriptions of the game ive seen in a while

[–]rodut 2 points3 points ago

I agree with everything you said, except I have a (sort of) solution for the last part, about the game's pace:

User and CPU custom sliders. This might not make the game perfectly realistic, but if you like modding your games, this is pretty much like that. After playing around with the settings for a while, I managed to make the game much more random (shot and pass accuracy, first touch control, etc.), realistic (I think the vanilla speed is ridiculous, it feels like none of the teams have or use their midfielders) and enjoyable.

Now that you've mentioned it, I think I'm going to try to make the game realistic (while still fun) for the full half time periods (20 min per half, right? I don't think 13 allows 45min). As a Barca fan, I'd love to be able to keep possession and play tiki taka for that long vs. a World Class CPU.

[–]throwaway689908 2 points3 points ago

FIFA soccer blog has a list of slider settings to make it more realistic, you should check it out.

And change gameplay settings to slow, too.

[–]Spheniscus 5 points6 points ago

That's a bit longer than 10 years :)

[–]ironmenon 8 points9 points ago

The funny thing is, these kinds of incidents do happen IRL and are even more hilarious.

[–]dexmonic 8 points9 points ago

I've been wanting to get FIFA for awhile, the look of it is (without joking) pretty realistic from the videos/trailers I've seen. I just don't know jack shit about soccer.

[–]jotsone 20 points21 points ago

if you want to learn about soccer, FIFA is a great way to do it. you get to know the players and teams very well, in addition to the rules too. fair warning, you'll be absolutely terrible at first but once you get the hang of it it's an amazing game.

[–]bob_blah_bob 9 points10 points ago

If you play against someone else who is also absolutely terrible it's a great time.

[–]Shishakli 0 points1 point ago

Make it a drinking game and you have yourself a whole new sport

[–]VTJP 19 points20 points ago

After having no clue how soccer offenses work and playing about 4 games of fifa with my friends i actually kind of understand what soccer teams offenses are doing when i watch a real game.

[–]rick2882 37 points38 points ago

how soccer offenses work

God your post is so quintessentially American, you have no idea.

[–]VTJP 7 points8 points ago

Futbol offences?

[–]rick2882 16 points17 points ago

The term "offense" itself seems very American football-esque. In football (soccer), the term attack is more commonly used. Also, unlike in American football, where offense and defense are made up of different players, because the same 11 players play in soccer, it's rare for someone to wonder about how the "offense works". An attack can originate deep in midfield, or via the wings, or even from the goalkeeper or a mistake from the opposing team. There's no formal "attacking play".

Also, unless you're speaking Spanish or talking about football in Spain/Mexico/South America, I wouldn't use the term futbol. Personally, I find it quite condescending. Stick to soccer ;)

[–]dadirabyt 7 points8 points ago

It's a lot of fun and doesn't require any knowledge about soccer. Either fifa or NHL are really great games and are much faster paced than madden or NCAA which is nice when you've got a group wanting to play.

[–]oanda 2 points3 points ago

Paly a few games. it takes a while to get the hang of it but the time you put into it is worht it. You will get hours of fun and you will learn alot about soccer with this game.

In addition I higly recommend the be a pro mode online where you only control one player that you create. This helps you learn immensely about real world soccer.

[–]clothes_are_optional 16 points17 points ago

yes. the game is fun as shit even if youre not really into soccer

[–]logancook44 5 points6 points ago

I play the game all the time, Fifa 10-13, and I've never had something like this or anything close to it happen. The game isn't glitchy at all.

[–]MogusMaximus 3 points4 points ago

For me, the only place where the physics engine / character movement is annoying is in the dribbling skill game. You're supposed to flick it under a bar and jump over, but if you mess up and knock over the bar, the ball may sit right next to the bar on the ground and the character just can't seem to figure out how to get the ball away from the bar. He just continues to jump over the ball and bar every time you get near. But that's a very minor complaint, the game is great overall. Online issues are ridiculous though. I play the online pro part of the game, and I get disconnected/frozen/frustrated ALL THE FUCKING TIME.

[–]sobe86 8 points9 points ago

How does it compare to pro-evo now? I remember back in the mid-2000s Fifa used to get flack for being much easier, and less deep than pro-evo, but I haven't owned a football game since then.

[–]VodkaSurprise 11 points12 points ago

In their latest version Pro Evo has caught up to FIFA in so far as how it plays. But they lost so much goodwill with their first few releases for the current gen (even if they got decent reviews Pro Evolution 2007 and 2008 are abominations imo) that FIFA was able to re-establish itself as the best football game out there.

[–]SenorFappy 3 points4 points ago

PES 12 was the best football game ever imo. Haven't played the new one yet but hearing good things.

[–]batnuna 2 points3 points ago

I used to be a really big PES fan, but in the past few years FIFA has been much better. It's much more realistic, compared to Pro Evo's arcade-y feel. The new PES is much better than the previous ones, but I still think FIFA is the better overall game, especially if you play online

[–]Burdisso 0 points1 point ago

Except for the all the game breaking crashes, disconnections, loss of items/credits that have so far plagued this years FIFA.

[–]not_a_troll_for_real 12 points13 points ago

Fifa 13 is amazing IMO. They've been very good for the past few years.

[–]Cumulonimbus2000 11 points12 points ago

Great game. Anyone can play and have a chance to win and it's easy to get good. Playing while stoned or drunk only makes it better. One on one matches with friends are so competitive and induce a lot of screaming. One of the few games where two on two is just as fun (as opposed to madden where 2v2 blows). My favorite game.

[–]Staarfish 21 points22 points ago

Great with friends.

[–]HebrewHammer16 7 points8 points ago

They're amazing. I used to play the NCAA football series a lot, and it wasn't until I played FIFA that I realized what a steaming pile of shit that franchise is. FIFA is legitimately realistic, and every year they make a dozen individual improvements that would headline a list of NCAA's so called yearly improvements. There have been times in FIFA 13 where I've watched a replay on some play just because I was so impressed with how realistic it is, and (in FIFA 13 at least) there are absolutely no game breaking bugs (the physics engine in 12 was a bit of a bummer, but was almost completely fixed for 13).

[–]salemgeneral13 5 points6 points ago

Phenomenal... so many people love to play and like other users have mentioned it actually gets better every year. If you weren't a fan of soccer before trying FIFA, you will be after, it's just great.

[–]king_m1k3 4 points5 points ago

I'm not a "huge" fan either, but I'll watch a game if it's on. I find FIFA fun though. Good if you just want to burn like 15 minutes. If you haven't played FIFA before though, everyone will kick your ass online for a WHILE before you get decent. And you'll probably keep kicking the ball miles over the net until you realize you basically just tap the shoot button... But once you get good, your friends wont ever want to play you because you'll just kick their ass.

[–]ChuckNorrisBakesPie 6 points7 points ago

Great games, I know a wholeeeee lot of people who hate soccer (football), but are obsessed.

[–]beergoggles69 2 points3 points ago

You 'love' sports video games, and you're asking "how's FIFA"? aka the original sport simulation video game? That everyone has played at least once in their lives? It's like asking what bread is like. It's fucking FIFA.

[–]LollipopScientist 2 points3 points ago

Here's my list of the good and bad things about the FIFA games.

The Good:

  • Tactical defending is realistic and rewarding when timed right.
  • Pretty solid career mode.
  • You know where you are in terms of skill when you're progressing through divisions online.
  • Fifa Ultimate Team has a nice card game element to it although rich kids would always end up with the most hax players (but it doesn't mean they're good with said players).
  • Skill games are fun to mess around with when bored.
  • Doing skills is intuitive with the trigger and right analog stick.

The Bad:

  • Freezing.
  • Not getting accomplishments.
  • EA servers disconnects.
  • Sometimes when you're winning and your opponent disconnects, EA sometimes reports that as your loss.
  • Hacked virtual pros.
  • Teleporting goalkeepers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtZ4bphiHOQ
  • Player impact engine doing shit like this (lol): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_EjgOeOqlM
  • Referees making extremely bad calls
  • Sometimes the offside is called when you're not offside
  • At 90 mins when on the break counter attacking the ref blows the whistle to end the game.
  • Not enough customization of stats on your virtual pro like small people = fast, tall people = slow. Which doesn't make sense when taller people are usually faster runners in real life.
  • Pace kinda rules the game. Extreme speed + lobbed through ball = ez mode sometimes.

[–]the_bacon 4 points5 points ago

so good!

[–]PonytailJesus 87 points88 points ago

It took me way too long to realize this was a video game.

[–]crookedparadigm 13 points14 points ago

Ask them about the 2010 World Cup. He was a hero.

[–]buckeyes75 10 points11 points ago

He did the right thing. You are there to win, not to make friends

[–]PeterLockeWiggin 22 points23 points ago

He's being victimized, yeah he goes down easily, as do most players. Aside from the once incident against stoke, he rarely goes to ground without contact.

[–]giz0ku 14 points15 points ago

Yep. He's being used a scapegoat to a massive degree.

[–]BlazeUp 3 points4 points ago

If you watched him when he played for Ajax. you would know he is best know for his antics.

[–]magicbullets 10 points11 points ago

I just changed from Pro Evo to FIFA (13) for the first time in more than a decade, and it was a great decision. FIFA's gameplay seems to have improved markedly in the last few years and it's fun learning a new game.

While the Pro Evo gameplay is definitely right up there, everything else about the game completely sucks (the lag, the menus, the save options, the lack of multiplayer common sense, etc etc). Konami need some serious help in the user experience department.

[–]Anefor 3 points4 points ago

Well? Did the white team score or not?

[–]superpop 1 point2 points ago

That's just some good old fashioned Swoodilypooper soccer right there.

DFTBA

[–]saffronSpaceship 0 points1 point ago

I laughed really, really hard.

[–]b0wdy 0 points1 point ago

It's just like real football now!

[–]JustZisGuy -1 points0 points ago

It took me to the second loop to realize this was a video game... that's how bad it is in real life. ;)

[–]Yarr527 1 point2 points ago

This is why I love the FIFA games

[–]aronivars 0 points1 point ago

And no penalty? Wow, I usually get the whistle when I stand near a player which goes down inside the box. Lots of times I don't even push buttons, the AI just drops and gets a pen.

So many metatarsals... SO MANY

[–]The_MAZZTer 1 point2 points ago

I actually didn't realize this was CGI until the first body fell on the ball (it was a little uncanny, no bounce to it).

Then it just got too silly to be RL.

[–]funinthehun 1 point2 points ago

Like watching a game of Twister with a ball.

[–]MaceFace2 0 points1 point ago

wow that looks real!!

[–]Raidicus 0 points1 point ago

OHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhh It's a computer game. Why did it take me so long to realize that.... :\

[–]cookies32 1 point2 points ago

If that was me playing I totally would have found some way to give up a goal at the end.

[–]modano_star 0 points1 point ago

Even the keeper is getting in on the act.

[–]scream2207 0 points1 point ago

lmfao at the goalie :D

this game still is pretty realistic, and one of the best sports games

[–]Hieronymus_Bosch 0 points1 point ago

there's just something very wrong with fifa 13. disparity between teams and players is silly and unbalanced. sometimes i thinks its the best fifa, other times i'm surprised they thought it was ready to sell.

[–]dre__ 0 points1 point ago

Wow, the realism is amazing.

[–]Disgustapated 0 points1 point ago

Proper lols

[–]TheSaneMonist 1 point2 points ago

I would award two and a half penalties for that incident.

[–]REDDIT_HARD_MODE -1 points0 points ago

Is there anything more hilarious than physics engines breaking?

[–]calmateguey 0 points1 point ago

Cool, I've never seen soccer on ice before.

[–]3AYATS 1 point2 points ago

could somebody please add "Yackety Sax" to this?

[–]skadefryd 0 points1 point ago

I can't be the only one who assumed this was real and just an extreme example of soccer players trying to fake injuries to get their opponents red-carded.

[–]IrishGuy22 0 points1 point ago

What a cluster fuck

[–]son_of_an_obama 0 points1 point ago

Would have been funnier if they were wearing all-blue uniforms.

[–]magicbullets 0 points1 point ago

In the real world the 'video panel' would find nothing wrong with this.

[–]redpandaeater 1 point2 points ago

My favorite soccer game still has to be Nintendo World Cup. Playing on a rocky surface and having players trip over rocks left and right is something I still remember and laugh at 20 years later.

[–]Anchupom 0 points1 point ago

"Bundleeeeee!"

[–]Fordy40 -1 points0 points ago

Finally, an accurate Fifa game
