Someone could put out an eye!

[–]liebkartoffel 9 points10 points ago

Precisely. My first thought was "where the hell are their masks?" Definitely not sending my daughter to that school.

[–]Godtiermasturbator 53 points54 points ago

Dem ankles

Seeing this old abandoned school reminds me of the old Dallas High School. The building is right in the middle of downtown, was abandoned decades ago, and always looks kind of surreal to me, like a Hollywood set for a horror film. I've always wanted to break in and check out the inside.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/150/417921697_1deba041ea.jpg

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Pearl+Station,+Dallas,+TX&hl=en&ll=32.786564,-96.794208&spn=0.000501,0.000551&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=45.197878,72.246094&oq=pearl+station,+Dal&t=h&hnear=Pearl%2FArts+District+Station&z=21&layer=c&cbll=32.786564,-96.794208&panoid=AR1zkW88-EiNtDng2uAW5Q&cbp=12,148.44,,0,-19.65

It will be gone soon. A builder has been approved to turn it into an apartment complex.

[–]AdaptiveMesh 8 points9 points ago

I understood that Dallas High School was to be developed for condominiums but the building would be preserved. The high school is a protected historic landmark and any development on site would have to include the restoration of the high school.

[–]b8b 8 points9 points ago

Well good to hear the building will still remain, but am a little sad it won't be all surreal and creepy looking anymore.

[–]SHIT_ON_THEIR_DICKS 3 points4 points ago

I'm always impressed by it when I switch trains at the Pearl Street station.

[–]Krystalpantss 73 points74 points ago

Makes me angry that they are trying to demolish it to put in condominiums. I bet they could really make that place into something amazing.

[–]daneinthecity 101 points102 points ago

ive squatted there for a while very creepy place to take a shit

[–]iamNebula 70 points71 points ago

There's two meanings for squatting; both are appropriate.

[–]EddieVolcano 6 points7 points ago

What is it about abandoned buildings that makes me want to take a shit? Weird.

[–]colonel_chapstick 4 points5 points ago

If you don't mind, could you answer a couple of questions I have? Is it legal to go into abandoned places such as this mansion, or is it trespassing? Also, assuming the doors and windows are locked/boarded up, how does one enter a place such as this?

[–]mental_loss 69 points70 points ago

I actually worked for a company that did the plans for those condominiums.
The infrastructure needed to rehab it, along with the repairs, were way beyond feasible. It was truly sad.

A lot of people shared the idea that it could be saved though.
The locals wanted to crucify Blumenthal Brickman (the developers) at most of the town meetings for proposing to tear it down and develop the property, including hazmat removal of all the lead/asbestos and filling underground infrastructure. (there are a number of buildings not shown in the pictures that are also at the same level of disrepair)

But sadly, the developers were stymied, and the money for development tends to disappear when the locals put a lot of road blocks up.

There was no one else that would touch the property, which is even more of a travesty considering how wealthy the locals are in Millbrook, NY.

Looks like they got what they wanted, a creepy decrepit building leaching cancerous materials, and serving as a local deathtrap for adventurous youths, all while welcoming travelers to the richest town north of Chappaqua.

Not that we thought they were insane for trying to protect their landmark, just irrational.

[–]matcauthon 10 points11 points ago

I'm curious, I grew up near Millbrook and have been to this building. My not-in-any-way professional recollection is that this place has been beyond the point of "rehab" for years. The floors that haven't caved yet are sagging in every direction. What could be done to restore it short of tearing it down? Is the stonework salvageable?

[–]mental_loss 6 points7 points ago

Yes, the bottom two stories of foundation were salvageable. They were worked into the plan as retaining walls for a pavilion area for the rehab. Good call.

[–]Mattisfaction 4 points5 points ago

This place in Bedford PA had a very similar situation. Granted it wasn't closed as long, but the place was in an absolute sad state. Here's the website and the history: http://www.omnihotels.com/FindAHotel/BedfordSprings/OurHistory.aspx

The place was a disaster when it was closed, just left to rot and fall apart, but now it is UNREAL.

[–]holyice7 3 points4 points ago

Beyond feasible doesn't mean impossible, though. It would be a total loss to someone to attempt a restoration, certainly, but what kind of numbers were thrown around, for the sake of curiosity?

[–]pgrily 22 points23 points ago

From the looks of just this picture, I imagine you'd have to pretty much tear down the whole thing and rebuild a replica. Just looks like it's wreaking of rotted wood, foundation damage, mold, and out of date building code.

[–]AngryGnosis 10 points11 points ago

I've been inside many places like this and have meaning to go to this one. I good friend of mine went in and it's basically un-explorable. Which is satin a lot because I have made my way through some pretty dilapidated places. His place is beyond repair. Nothing is even remotely close to structurally sound so it would have to be demolished and rebuilt all together. Much more than a 3 million dollar endeavor. Especially when you consider the clean up costs involving asbestos removal.

[–]No_Stairway_Denied 5 points6 points ago

What is the coolest place like this you have been in?

[–]AngryGnosis 7 points8 points ago

Norwich state hospital. It's a massive state asylum that rests on about 500 acres and is comprised of about 50 buildings, most of which are connected by underground tunnels. The tunnel system was pitch black and had many turns and and hallways. Very easy to get lost in and creepy as fuck. Sadly they are finally beginning to knock many of the buildings down and most of he tunnels have been collapsed over the last couple of years. This is heart breaking to me since it was my first exploration and I have been there many times. I don't think any other place that is easily accessible to me will ever measure up to that place.

[–]Jakobud 5 points6 points ago

It looks like it would cost a fortune to make livable again.

[–]Krystalpantss 4 points5 points ago

I'm sure it would cost a hell of a lot to restore it back to a habitable structure, still doesn't change the fact that it's mildly upsetting :/

[–]Subduction 2 points3 points ago

Many, many years ago perhaps, but now it's a collapsed building that just hasn't quite collapsed yet.

[–]unclezeke 2 points3 points ago

It's a complete dump. It probably hasn't had any real maintenance in 45 years, including the last 35 years of abandonment. It can't be saved.

[–]mardob 5 points6 points ago

I think it would take Evel Knievel on a Ducati to jump on that sailed ship.

[–]bonjourdan 2 points3 points ago

PLEASE tell me it still exists...looks like I have a trip to make.

[–]bagels666 7 points8 points ago

It does. It's in Millbrook, NY, right on the corner of 82 and 343.

[–]BillScum89 4 points5 points ago

Great, now i'm gonna be on that site for hours.

[–]Oznog99 1 point2 points ago

Wasn't "Bennett School For Girls" an 80's coming-of-age sex comedy or something?

[–]Montinovich 139 points140 points ago

A great concept artist named Jonas De Ro has actually made an awesome piece based on this image http://jonasdero.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d524cz4

Just thought I'd throw that in :)

[–]thewormauger 30 points31 points ago

Nice, awesome artwork, and credit to the artist.. you, you're alright.

[–]CalculonisEgyptian 121 points122 points ago

Here in Detroit we have whole neighborhoods of these.

[–]bobrocks 21 points22 points ago

Robocop was a documentary that fell into the time vortex and landed on Paul Verhoeven's desk.

[–]CalculonisEgyptian 5 points6 points ago

Seems like that more and more these days.

edit-Or maybe not... Im finding conflicting info.. it was scheduled to be torn down, but it may not have been yet.

[–]MrMartinotti 21 points22 points ago

We should all chip in and turn it into a bitchen Internet café.

[–]xddm 5 points6 points ago

Not torn down. Passed by it on Saturday.

[–]Iwouldbangyou 4 points5 points ago

Maybe it was torn down on Monday

Looks a bit like the mansion in Tumbleweed from Red Dead Redemption.

[–]pale_red_dot 5 points6 points ago

"Hey, that looks a lot like that mansion in Red Dead Redemption! Better check first though. Can't be too careful...."

Ctrl+F "Red Dead"

I'm a unique snowflake. I'm a unique snowflake. I'm a unique snowflake.

[–]diggy64 11 points12 points ago

I've been inside this place - very creepy. I have pics but would need to be scanned. Just inside the main door was an old voting booth that always looked like someone was using it. Apparently back then (some 10 years ago) the library was gorgeously left untouched with everything intact including leather bound books, etc. (although locked up pretty tight). I wonder how it stands today.

Link to historic pics. More recent photos. More pics, not mine

[–]KiXpiX 17 points18 points ago

How cool wouldn't it be to buy that house and fix it up?

[–]ChiefBromden 135 points136 points ago

probably this cool http://i.imgur.com/ZS8S0.png

[–]sweetgreggo 3 points4 points ago

I was wondering how far down I'd have to scroll to find a Money Pit post. Now I'm gonna have to find the scene where the tub falls through the floor.

[–]asimovfan1 2 points3 points ago

Sometimes I find GREAT comments. Like this one.

[–]MariiSama 15 points16 points ago

I LOVE this place! Here's my best attempt at it in MineCraft.

[–]kwizzle 7 points8 points ago

Looks like the one from fight club.

There really is a sub reddit for everything.

[–]DoctorJynx 12 points13 points ago

This place almost reminds me of the house from the Casper movie.

[–]dean2k 6 points7 points ago

Reminds me of all those old cartoons where: "And in order to receive your inheritance, you'll have to spend the night in the old Smith House"

[–]tmassey110 5 points6 points ago

If I were an eccentric millionaire, I think this place would be mine.

[–]neodiogenes 6 points7 points ago

When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls. Whenever candlelights flicker ... Where the air is deathly still. That is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror ... with ghoulish delight...

Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion! I am your host -- your ghost host. Kindly step this way? There's no turning back now!

You will not be harmed ... but you will not be released. Until you have taken a tour of my home. We have so few visitors ...

Live ones, that is! [cue goulish laughter]

[–]StoneColdNaked 2 points3 points ago

My friends and I went in and explored one day. It's pretty creepy on the lower levels.

[–]SolidLikeIraq 26 points27 points ago

One of the most frightening nights of my life was spent exploring the Bennett School.

I lived in upstate NY, and it was kind of a right of passage to go to the Bennett School, climb in through the white boarded up window on the lower left hand corner, and explore. Just to give you perspective, that window is probably 15 feet above ground, and the only way to get in is to climb up a set of rotting stairs that are nearly impossible to see at night.

When you made your way in there was an unfortunate amount of graffiti that greeted you along the way. We would go to the theatre and take pictures of the group sitting in random chairs. After that, we would explore the building further.

I know it sounds corny and ridiculous, but one night when we were exploring, we decided it would be a good idea to bring a camcorder along to record the experience. At one point my buddy Tim was talking nonsense into the camera, which was on some sort of "Night time recording mode" that made everything green, and all of a sudden his eyes started to glow bright green for about 30 seconds. During that time his nonsense really turned into ridiculous rambling, and after the 30 or so seconds were up, his eyes went back to a normal color, and he continued chatting in a normal maner. -- While watching the tape later Tim told us that he had no recollection of the things he said when his eyes turned bright green.

Later that night, my buddy was walking with the camera and we entered a bathroom that had running water, that was already running when we entered. He had the camera recording, but for some reason it was at his side. On the camera, a 12-18 inch glowing rod was sitting in the tub, and none of us saw anything in the tub when we went in.

In another room, we opened the door, and were all hit with an intense amount of wind. When we left that room and continued to walk down the hall, we could hear strange noises coming from the depths of the building.

There is a large staircase in the middle of the building which is rumored to be a spot where several girls hung themselves back when it was a girl's school. While walking up that staircase, and quickly deciding to stop and retreat, one of my friends swore that she saw a rope dangling, that no one else could see.

Later as we walked down in the administration area, there were a few broken windows on doors, and one of the doors had in large red paint the words: "School's out!!" written on it. My buddy specifically focused in on that door with his camera and said out loud "That's right, School's out mother fucker!" -- Later when we were watching the film, the words were not on the door at all, although other graffiti, including red paint graffiti was clearly visible on the walls.

with regards to the theatre I mentioned, while looking at the pictures from us in the theatre, there were several seats that were filled with fog, or blurry smoke, which was pretty strange.

At the end of this night, we tried to go further into the building than we had gone before, and one of the girls we were with just started crying uncontrollably and we finally decided to leave. As we were leaving, the care taker who lives next door came outside with a flashlight and we all took off running faster than i have ever run before.

This place used to be a School for girls that rivaled the likes of Vassar. Once they shut that down, Timothy Leary occupied it for some time.

It was a creep show.

[–]mudduck454 3 points4 points ago

There was a place like that here in Orlando,fl. it was called Sunnyland, and it was an old abandoned mental institute. It was on the Same property as the place were you would go to get food stamps, in an area called pine hills. Every Halloween we would sneak into the place as a test of courage. now there were some strange things that happened there, like the elevator doors would open and close when you were near it, but other than that, the other things that people would say happened there, was just caused by teenagers.

One time we went, we had one person go before us and hide, as we would walk around the place, that person would make noise, and bang things to scare the girls. The best thing we did was one time my friend quietly grabbed on of the girls in the back of the group, and covering her mouth, he dragged her backwards whispering crazy things into her ear. lets just say she didn't trust us anymore. but it was funny to see her reaction when we started laughing about it. Man we were dicks when we were little.

But that building no longer stands, years ago a dumb ass teen fell down the elevator shaft, so they tore down the building. there went a great place for a test of courage, well there was also the Minute Maid Manson, but that is for another time.

[–]pgrily 8 points9 points ago

Lies. Lies everywhere.

[–]ADVrider 4 points5 points ago

That's exactly how I picture the evil hotel from the end of Stephen King/Peter Straub's book, The Talisman. It just needs to back up against the Pacific ocean.

Perfect!

[–]ThatSpuds 4 points5 points ago

This is how I picture the "haunted" house Jake has to go into in order to get to the other world in "Drawing of the Three" (Dark Tower novels) but secondarily, I agree with you.

[–]mysteriouswire 3 points4 points ago

Let's see Extreme Makeover - Home Edition tackle this one.

[–]spankclown 4 points5 points ago

When I'm old I want to live in a house like this, regardless of how dangerous it is. Just so kids who walk by will go "Don't go in there, that's old man Dan's house! Some say kids who go in there, never come out."

[–]Alexdoh 3 points4 points ago

Youuuu rannnnggg?

I smell an Indian Burial Ground!!!

[–]hobowillie 2 points3 points ago

YOU LEFT THE BODIES AND ONLY MOVED THE HEADSTONES!

[–]scottvr4 0 points1 point ago

It's old and it's creepy. I'm surprised nobody has called it "haunted" yet, since it clearly fits all of the criteria.

[–]Biochemicallynodiff 2 points3 points ago

This looks like something out of a Lovecraft story. Would it be near Dunwich, Innsmouth, Miscatonic......

[–]Allther 0 points1 point ago

buy it and repair it, if you put 1 million in you can surely get 4 million out. In sweden a house like this would go for that kind of money, even though we got close to no old abandoned buildings or fixer upper.

even though all of us know what happens to american rednecks trying to repair a fixer upper...

[–]2makealongstoryshort 0 points1 point ago

Yepp that's Bennett college, used to be an all girls school. In the process of selling it hopefully To be used. Much is run down like this but a few buildings behind this one are in great shape. I and a few other people are the only ones legaly aloud to go on the property.. Timothy leery didn't live that far away from this place.

[–]bobbybalboa12 0 points1 point ago

the mansion from MW2 special ops anyone??

[–]selfsatisfiedgarbage 2 points3 points ago

If you play the piano keys in the right order you'll unlock Vincent.

[–]murdochmoss 2 points3 points ago

Well Reddit, I think this is it. Our communal relationship on the webs can be made into a real life scenario. This place is obviously big enough for most of us and our subreddits to live communally. We should commence to travel to this place, maybe a plan for next summer, and take it over, we know from pictures many of us are handy at many many things and together we can rebuild this place for ourselves! I'm sure the locals would enjoy the influx of people seeing they want condominiums built here. I think this is just right for all of us.

[–]skulash 2 points3 points ago

here's an article on the building with some interior pictures

[–]albatrossSKY 1 point2 points ago

Looks like a new Adams Family is in the works

[–]uptheaffiliates 1 point2 points ago

I live about 15 minutes from this place, used to scare the crap out of me when I drove by it as a little kid. It's right near a small town, not like way out in the woods or anything but it's still quite a sight.

[–]Calquon -1 points0 points ago

Inception.

[–]vangoghgous 1 point2 points ago

spent the summer up in millbrook doing lymes disease research and I would eat my lunches on the lawn and just stare at it..never got the courage to trespass though

[–]ABeautifulLoser13 0 points1 point ago

Didn't this used to be a girl's school? I think I read that somewhere... So beautiful though. I hope I someday get a massive windfall of money so I can buy a place like this and rebuild it. Old buildings are so much lovelier than new ones!

[–]bryanwithawhy 0 points1 point ago

Hell, I'd live there.

[–]BrutalMassacre3 0 points1 point ago

i would love to see an album of you going through the house

It SEEMS like a decent fixer upper, but the fuckin' Paperboy is always smashing up your windows and shit with a barrage of weaponized newspapers.

(Not totally his fault though what with being preoccupied with dodging the breakdancer and that fuckin' kid on his Big Wheel all the time.)

10/10 would explore

[–]gimmeboobs 0 points1 point ago

Kinda reminds me of Jacobstown, New Vegas.

[–]LucasEatWorld 0 points1 point ago

Stuff like this makes me wonder how many people have actually gone in there over the last few decades. I'm not sure even a homeless person would want any part of it.

[–]Bikenutt 0 points1 point ago

Its an old girls school....and this photo isn't very good.

[–]quaglady 1 point2 points ago

Ahh Bennet, northernmost point of the Dutchess County "haunted triangle"

[–]10nix 0 points1 point ago

When I was a teenager some friends and I skateboarded in there. It was creepy and dangerous then. Now I wouldn't even attempt going in there for fear it would collapse on me.

[–]tyh64 0 points1 point ago

TIL dilapidated houses are automatically considered "creepy."

[–]maladroit91913 1 point2 points ago

"Next season of American Horror Story..."

[–]LessLikeYou 0 points1 point ago

Not so much creepy but definitely woefully inadequate and in dire need of immediate improvement.

[–]ThereReallyIsNoHope 0 points1 point ago

$200k or so and I could make that thing shine!

Edit: Lots of red paint and dark floors.

[–]Megustatits 0 points1 point ago

Still nicer than my place

[–]jimbravo 0 points1 point ago

Needs more jpeg

[–]luckystrike6488 0 points1 point ago

Wow! I just passed by this last week on my way to Poughkeepsie, I couldn't believe how creepy this thing is, and you can see it right off of a main road (RT 44 E). I had a hard time believing it wasn't some sort of halloween haunted house or something. So I guess this is my current Baader Meinhof.

[–]ClusterMakeLove 1 point2 points ago

I'd murder someone in that house, just on general principle.

[–]CountMalachi 0 points1 point ago

I feel like a single M-80 through the front window would take the whole place down.

[–]WaltMitty 0 points1 point ago

I sneezed while looking at the image and the building burst into flames.

Sorry.

[–]Librarinox 0 points1 point ago

Richard Branson needs to buy this place and make the world's scariest haunted house

[–]asap_balboa 1 point2 points ago

not that creepy. I fapped

[–]MuffinatorXIII 0 points1 point ago

someone should Photoshop this to have a small child looking directly at the camera from one of the windows

[–]phoenixloop 0 points1 point ago

Looks like Professor Xavier's failed expansion school.

[–]dhorrible 0 points1 point ago

Looks like something from Macheist.

[–]ecto1ajon 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a good DIY project to me.

[–]elegos513 0 points1 point ago

all work and no play make homer something something ...

[–]TeeHowe 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher.

[–]hail2bot 0 points1 point ago

I drive by that all the time. Always wanted to explore it. Don't want to get splinters though.

[–]snafoo972 0 points1 point ago

You and your friends should have gone inside. Then you should split up to cover more ground.

[–]uncooperativecheese 0 points1 point ago

this place was in a dream I had, I got chills when I opened this pic

[–]CGord 1 point2 points ago

Would go over well in /r/abandonedporn.

[–]dansadroidfreak 0 points1 point ago

That is awesome. I would love to explore that.

[–]hereticjones 1 point2 points ago

I hate pictures like that because the internet has taught me that if I dare to look at it for any significant length of time, a scary face or similar is going to suddenly appear accompanied by a loud noise, and give me a fucking heart attack.

[–]m0gul6 0 points1 point ago

I want this building

[–]Mtb-Maniac 1 point2 points ago

I would start a fight club in there.

[–]XavierMendel 0 points1 point ago

It's like someone took my childhood home, made it bigger, and then gave it a yard.

[–]wormjerky 0 points1 point ago

Would be a great haunted house

[–]salsapants27 0 points1 point ago

Would spend the night there just to see if anything was up.

[–]ntgv 0 points1 point ago

This is actually a fully functional frat house.

[–]Zanno1878 0 points1 point ago

I love this...Great stuff!!

[–]Lone-Pilgrim 0 points1 point ago

John Marston fought in that mansion. It should be a historical site just because of that.

[–]Dioptaze 0 points1 point ago

Strangely, this somewhat resembles my mental representation of the hotel Jack Sawyer and his mom stay at in The Talisman. Obviously a bit more delapitated, but that hotel creeps me out...

[–]nickflow 0 points1 point ago

so if is abandoned can anyone take it fix it and live there? i always wonder how that works

[–]Mugman16 0 points1 point ago

Sorta reminded me of my wallpaper. http://imgur.com/5lrTJ

[–]dAddysAyz 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a class war win ;)

[–]pinkylemonade 1 point2 points ago

made me think of the Munster's house.

[–]lenswipe 1 point2 points ago

Looks like the one from The Woman in Black

[–]davep85 0 points1 point ago

That looks like the mansion from the movie The Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy.

[–]Gibbins963 0 points1 point ago

Tumble Weed Mansion, Red Dead Redemption anyone?

[–]TheGeorge 0 points1 point ago

I wonder how this would look photoshopped to look like it did in it's prime.

I reckon fucking stunning is how it would look.

[–]squatch_watcher 0 points1 point ago

Was probay owned by an NFL player who went bankrupt.

[–]FOR_SClENCE 0 points1 point ago

I'm expecting a million Cazadores to come skittering out of some random corner of the picture.

[–]spotterla 0 points1 point ago

Can someone colorize out the creepy?

[–]Cubejam 0 points1 point ago

Is this the same mansion that someone photoshopped a person in the window?

[–]JustaDawg 1 point2 points ago

Very similar to this place in Mineral Wells Texas. Beautiful building, but costs too much to save. One company actually tried, and nearly bankrupted themselves before even starting. http://www.bakerhotel.us/

[–]derpcraftxx 0 points1 point ago

I wanna go there soooo bad!

[–]DoctorDeath 0 points1 point ago

I would totally live there.

[–]AkumaJu 0 points1 point ago

this is so sad, why dont they renovate?

[–]MacFatty 0 points1 point ago

no way... it looks like adventure!

[–]rilly_wut 1 point2 points ago

That's over on Paper Street isn't it?
