I love the abandoned stations of the NYC subway system. here is a good resource if you want to start poking around them. mind, it's very illegal.

[–]nizo505 2 points3 points ago

I wonder how much electricity is wasted in abandoned parts of the subway system??

[–]soviet1924 0 points1 point ago

electrifying the tracks isn't going to use any electricity unless a train goes over them, and I would assume the lights are kept off, but I could be wrong.

[–]cargobroombroom 1 point2 points ago

I read an article from Philly not too long ago that they are planning to build power stations near some of the subway stations that grabs the power when trains brake and puts that power to the train, the station, and the power station for the neighborhood. I'm a little fuzzy on it, but here's the article. It's 2 years old, and I think it's still in planning.

[–]soviet1924 0 points1 point ago

That's the same idea hybrids use for braking.

Zactly

[–]khar432 1 point2 points ago

How illegal is "very illegal"?

[–]soviet1924 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure its just a fine/trespassing charge

[–]jaydid 22 points23 points ago

Hope I'm not the only one who immediately thought of the Ninja Turtles movies.

[–]Paddywhacker 13 points14 points ago

Ghostbusters two, river of slime.

[–]s0uled0ut 0 points1 point ago

River of slime is actually based on the Beach Pneumatic Transit built in NYC in 1870.

Unfortunately nothing exists of that line any longer; it would be amazing to be able to explore it.

[–]Billbeachwood -4 points-3 points ago

Exfuckinactly this.

[–]threeninjas 2 points3 points ago

It ain't the Hilton.

[–]grink 8 points9 points ago

It is still used as a turn around track the 6 local and you can get tours of it.

Wow, i love watching stuff like this. Any similar "Urban Exploration" videos worth checking out?

[–]Mayniac182 2 points3 points ago

Check out Crack the Surface. A friend of mine was involved with them, showed me a few videos on his phone one time after an explore.

I really want to move into doing underground sites, but in London there's just so much fucking CCTV that you can't just walk onto the tracks.

[–]QueueNX 0 points1 point ago

You can. It's not like they're monitoring every single camera all the time.

[–]XXCoreIII 0 points1 point ago

Check with other groups in your area, but as I understand Britain's trespass laws are such that the cops let urban explorers go pretty fast due to lack of criminal intent.

[–]Mayniac182 0 points1 point ago

For private properties yeah, they don't care so long as you're not breaking or stealing anything. That said, government owned property (e.g. transport infrastructure) is another matter from what I remember.

[–]thisisnotnikki 2 points3 points ago

'Dark Days' if you haven't seen it.

[–]thewindandrain 1 point2 points ago

AWESOME movie. One of the things that prompted me to become homeless by choice.

[–]morganpartee 1 point2 points ago

That's Damn near too stressful to watch, I sure wouldn't want to do it haha.

[–]DamnSpamFilter 0 points1 point ago

undercity is my favourite thing i've ever seen, i watch it every couple months and still love it

[–]badgrafxghost 0 points1 point ago

That is one of my favorite videos on the internet... glad to see it was posted here.

[–]richertai 0 points1 point ago

Came here to post this.

[–]Billbeachwood 0 points1 point ago

I'm now 30 minutes behind schedule. But thank you. That was awesome.

[–]JackBauerSaidSo 1 point2 points ago

I wonder how difficult this would be by a novice.

[–]gezana 1 point2 points ago

That's what I was thinking. If only I had an expert friend to tag along with, it would be amazing to do this sorta stuff.

[–]S1R 6 points7 points ago

Just be smart and Urban Exploration is one of the most amazing things you can experience.

[–]penneh 4 points5 points ago

Well said.

[–]JackBauerSaidSo 3 points4 points ago

right. I mean, the beauty of some of the abandoned stuff in this world is worth the slight risk of getting caught. As long as it's not a felony charge. Or, in some countries, a stoning.

I'm not a complete invalid, I can keep my head down. I can't claim to be a great friend of heights, though. The bridge scene at the end of the video is disconcerting.

[–]cjdaniel 0 points1 point ago

All you can do about a fear of heights is keep climbing higher things than you are entirely comfortable with. It will eventually subside to a healthy respect.

[–]KayBeeToys 1 point2 points ago

OP's link describes a 100% legal method to see the station.

[–]edwinhere 5 points6 points ago

The real platform 9¾

[–]Kanuck88 3 points4 points ago

The platform 93/4's actually exists.

[–]bobsagetfullhouse 7 points8 points ago

Looks like they left the lights on since they abandoned the place all those years ago.

[–]David35207 2 points3 points ago

Abandoned but the lights are on?

[–]boredop 5 points6 points ago

The station has been closed to customers since 1945, but it's still used by trains to turn around at the end of the line and head back uptown. Plus there are occasional tours and movie/tv shoots. So yeah, the lights stay on. The station is not abandoned in the strictest sense but it's still pretty cool.

[–]David35207 1 point2 points ago

Oh it is absolutely gorgeous, I was only curious is all.

[–]nicosuave9987 5 points6 points ago

AKA The lair of the Ninjas Turtles: Secret of the Ooze

[–]EastenNinja 2 points3 points ago

The blue parts make it look like there really is a window there

[–]mc1215 4 points5 points ago

I couldn't figure out where these shots originally came from, but here is the posted photo in much greater resolution and with much less jpeg degradation (although it's grainier and has had annoying vignetting + too much contrast added). (Still better though.)

[–]ashtonpar 1 point2 points ago

Love the Guastavino Tiling

[–]Tbird555 1 point2 points ago

Now I need to go back and play The Darkness again.

[–]kingbadger 1 point2 points ago

are those windows? Are they visible from the outside?

[–]FreddieFreelance[S] 0 points1 point ago

No, they're skylights with thick, flat glass tiles set in a concrete slab above.

[–]sicarim 1 point2 points ago

Ride the downtown 6 train right back around after Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall and you can see it for yourself.

A very common repost, but still a great image.

[–]smokeymctokerson 0 points1 point ago

I can agree with that

[–]theshallowdrowned -2 points-1 points ago

Oh, this again.

[–]Eat_sandwiches 0 points1 point ago

Is this in that scene from The Day After Tomorrow where it's all flooded and hes looking for a phone?

[–]deathtopumpkins 2 points3 points ago

No, that was in the Library. It looked nothing like this.
