Why is this disparity a big deal? Our society is shallow. DEAL WITH IT. Either story is tragic because someone was badgered into suicide. I was a rejected "geek" as a teen too. I'm 42 now and you know what, IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER ANYMORE. Grow a pair and get on with your life if you were rejected for being "ugly" or "nerdy". Anyone criticizing this girl's story should realize that it doesn't hurt her parents any less because she was considered attractive. This isn't super closely related, but I think they both point towards the same kind of attitude.

Has anyone noticed that the pictures (presumably taken w/o consent) of fat people eating blocks of cheese, or generally funny looking or ugly people hit the front page of /r/wtf and /r/funny all the time, this is a picture on the front page right now, and nobody really thinks twice about it.

But then we've got that whole creepshots thing and there's massive outrage over protecting their privacy, not posting pictures without their consent, etc. Is the difference in reaction because of the intent? I don't see how taking a picture without consent to laugh at it is any better than to masturbate to it.

I think these are both just cases of society holding attractive people in a higher regard than ugly people.

Why does this always happen? Two people kill themselves, but because one gets more attention than the other, the internet comes to the conclusion that the one with more attention is a cunt while the unheard one is a saint. Everyone says "one suicide shouldn't be considered more important than the other", then go on to make the lesser known suicide out to be more important. No matter what she did, and regardless of whether or not she 'deserved' it, in the end all that's happened is that two people in pain have taken their lives; two people that could have done great things are gone. That's a fucking tragedy. People need to stop comparing suicide. The fact that somebody felt the need to make this, essentially brushing off somebody fucking killing themselves because they got more attention than someone else that killed themselves, is the real WTF part of this.

What I like most is how everyone and their mom has an opinion about this girl, and if it deviates from "omg what a tragedy, this sucks, everyone stop bullying!! -There, I did my online part to passive-aggressively stop bullying, I'm a great person", then you're gonna get attacked. Like god forbid you should ask why she was bullied, or where her parents were at, or why the school(s) did/didn't do anything, etc.. God forbid you have a discussion about the subject: no, you're only allowed to feel bad that some pretty white girl ~~with self-made issues~~ killed herself. Right. That'll solve all future instances.

EDIT: People who proclaim loudest to stop bullying and feel sad for the victim are often the ones bullying others who deviate from that singleminded opinion.

People obviously give a shit dummy, just because something didn't receive the same amount of attention doesn't mean people don't give a shit. 1) the guy was norwegian, you obviously are not going to get the same level of news coverage in NA as when someone from NA kills themselves as opposed to europe. 2) Social media. I have a strong feeling the young girl was much more active on social media (as would be everyone in her demographic/age range) thus a huge social media presence, thus, news coverage.

I think bullying is part of growing up. At one time we were either bullied or the bully. I've been both.

If kids never ever had to deal with any kind of adversity growing up then they would literally fall to pieces the first time anything bad happens to them.

Shielding children from the natural selection of their peers is just raising a generation too weak to even begin to know how to stand up for themselves. You are raising a generation of victims.

Instead of blaming the bully you need to put the focus straight on the parents. Where were they? Why didn't they talk to her? She had obviously had previous attempts and felt comfortable telling the entire internet about how she was being bullied, what did her parents do for her?

Did they ever talk to her? Teach her how to defend herself? Did they help with her self esteem? Did they guide her not to do stupid shit like flash your tits to everyone or have sex with someone elses boyfriend?

Or should they have been parents at all? It sounds like they shouldn't have.

Your job as a parent isn't to shield your children from all the bad in the world, it is to equip them to deal with it. Because the world isn't a very nice place. I use this approach with my children, if they pick a fight and lose I don't call the school demanding they kick out the other student or call their parents and complain about them beating up my kid. That's horseshit I tell them 'hey you made your bed now sleep in it' If you ever feel froggy enough to throw the first punch you better damned well be ready to deal with the consiquences of your actions.

I did the same for my little brother when he was in school. If he picked a fight I wouldn't jump in I would let him get his ass kicked. It stopped him from being bully because he used to actually pick on kids and provoke them into attacking him so that I would jump in and whip their ass. I got wise to it when he threatened to have me beat some kid up and I'm like 'wait right there buddy, you are fighting your own battles from now on' and guess what? He stopped being a bully.

People need to grow up, face reality and put the blame where it belongs instead of trying to neuter an entire generation. You may live in a perfect world where you never will ever have to defend yourself but the rest of us don't and should not be handicapped by your idealism.

Are you seriously implying that it isn't tragic that a girl was bullied to the point where she committed suicide because she flashed a stranger once when she was in 12 or 13? It is pretty terrible to insinuate that when a girl makes one (or even more than one) poor choice of a sexual nature that her life or death is somehow worth less than that of someone who happens to be unattractive. Kids do dumb shit, I know I did.

It is sad for anyone to be bullied to the point where they feel like they have nothing to live for, but it doesn't make any sense for someone who lives in MD to complain about seeing more coverage about the suicide of a girl who lived in North America than for a Swedish guy.

Especially since it appears that the Swedish guy, rather than being bullied to death for being ugly, has gotten married and is still alive.

It is much more likely for a person to hear about the suicide/death of someone on your continent than it is to hear about the suicide/death of someone on a different continent unless there are extenuating circumstances, like celebrity status or international political significance.

Additionally, bullying generally, and especially bullying-related suicides, have been a focus of US national news for a while now. It is entirely possible that in Sweden bullying-related deaths are not considered as newsworthy as they are here and thus would have been less likely to make a widespread news circuit.

Not to mention that the guy is still alive.

In fact, there are pictures of his recent wedding (to a pretty good looking lady, believe it or not) floating around nowadays. I think he went by perra2000 or something. Nothing significant about him, just a goofy looking guy.

And pardon the white-knighting, but what's with all the hate towards Amanda Todd on reddit? What happened to her is really disappointing. Didn't she have to switch schools a few times, only to be isolated and berated by her peers and even beaten up at one point? Cripes, people act like flashing her tits was some unforgivable crime against humanity, and we're on a website with r/gonewild as one of its most popular pages. And I don't know the details about her fooling around with some guy in a relationship, but man, let's just all go ahead and lynch her for being an ignorant teenager. Suicide is a tragedy no matter how it comes about, and in cases like this there's no reason to make her look like a villain just because she made some dumb choices and uploaded a lame video.

My wife is a perfect example of what happens when you were shielded from bullies. She has never been bullied in her life because her parents did not allow her to socialize with people unsupervised. She couldn't go hang out at anyones house, she couldn't take phone calls, she didn't have the internet or anything. She couldn't even leave her yard and had to have her friends come over and play within sight of her Grandma.

Despite all of this she grew up relatively well socialized due to her involvement with marching band and sports and other supervised acitivities. She avoided every single pitfall of youth such as drugs, sex, alcohol, and bullying.

My wife absolutley cannot stand up for herself now. She does not know how and gets taken advantage of by all kinds of people. She is the con mans dream. She has signed pettitions for things she does not support because she felt harrassed outside of a supermarket. Before we met she would get taken advantage of by agressive pan handlers, people asking for donations. Basically anyone acting agressive she would just cave in and give them money and then regret it. I once caught her writing a check to a bill collector who called her and basically bullied her into thinking she had a debt and if she didn't pay it they would arrest her. It turns out the debt wasn't even hers but when she told the guy that he said she couldn't prove it and blah blah blah. She was terrified. A crackhead landlord once tried to charge her twice for rent and threatened to have her evicted because he lost the cashiers check but she had a receipt. He threatened to call the sheriff. This was back when we first met, she called me in tears saying she was going to be homeless. I investigated and since she had the receipt I threw it in her landlords face and told him to fuck off and he wasn't getting shit from her.

This is what happens if no one ever teaches you to take care of yourself and stand up to other people. If you shield children and teenagers from the real world they grow up to be naive timid souls who will be walked over the rest of their lives.

I now have to have my wife run every decision that involves anyone on the outside or anything financial by me to catch shit like that.

She is slowely learning (we've been together for 6 years) that there are people out there that will fuck you over and don't care about you whatsoever. There are people out there who are mean for no reason. It's a rough world outside your door and you need to be equipt to handle it.

You can't shield your children from mean people in the world. You need to teach them to deal with it. You need to talk to them and be involved in their lives. You need to teach them that it's not a good idea to flash your tits online or sleep with someone elses boyfriend or even have sex at the age of 14. You need to teach and guide your children not shield them from everything, otherwise you get a sucker.
