I don't have friends in my classes.

[–]plazmamuffin 0 points1 point ago

I'm with ya there.

[–]saxaroo 44 points45 points ago

Yep. That's about right. Especially when the teacher has a weird accent...

[–]jrhoffa 17 points18 points ago

"Sinusoidal steady state" in a thick Iranian accent

[–]SgtOddball 46 points47 points ago

"Theta double dot" in an Indian accent = "dedadubuldut"

[–]St-Moustache 11 points12 points ago

I've taken several "carcurus" classes with asian teachers and it always takes a couple weeks to get used to it, it's like they're using a whole new technical vocabulary that you have to pick up.

[–]CamoAnimal 1 point2 points ago

LOL!!! So I take it you've also notice the way they write symbols and letters looks strangely similar Asian characters? Every time my Calc I professor would write f(x) I saw an upside-down version of the Japanese symbols "トヤは"

[–]cgdiaz 0 points1 point ago

Ughh.. nightmares of SDSU circuit analysis in chinese/english. My gpa will never forget.

[–]StockBandit 2 points3 points ago

Asian version fyi is "Dobbler dat"

[–]longboardingerrday 0 points1 point ago

My calc 1 professor last year would say theta as "taaayta"

[–]thisguy9 -1 points0 points ago

scheta double dot

FTFY

[–]fullnelson13 4 points5 points ago

fuck, I hate that shit.

[–]statusisnotquo 4 points5 points ago

You have to respect what they've gone through to get there, though. I mean, s/he probably came to the US to get their Ph.D., so they had to learn how to be masters of their field while becoming fluent in a foreign language.

So, yeah, I get your frustration, but give credit where it's due. Because seriously, could you do that? I know I couldn't.

[–]colemorris 12 points13 points ago

Yeah, that's an entirely different thing than paying large sums of money to learn material. And when you're a consumer in an education market, it's extremely frustrating when the medium of teaching is presented in a difficult to understand manner (and not for lack of trying.)

[–]statusisnotquo 0 points1 point ago

True, I can definitely relate, as many of my professors have thick accents as well. But as a grad student in a science field, I currently call many of those people friend. So I sympathize with their struggles.

[–]colemorris 1 point2 points ago

It's really just about your perspective. You can't blame either party, because it's unfair to both.

[–]fullnelson13 3 points4 points ago

I mostly just hate studying electronics when I am an M.E. undergrad.

[–]elzorrodorito -2 points-1 points ago

I hate learning programming. THANKS FOR TEACHING ME ROUNDABOUT WAYS TO SOLVE ALL THESE PROBLEMS IN MATLAB WHEN I COULD DO IT IN 30 SEC ON MY TI-89. YOU GUYS TOTALLY READ MY MIND WHEN I CHOSE M.E. I REALLY JUST WANTED TO WASTE ALL MY TIME LEARNING TO PROGRAM

[–]fullnelson13 1 point2 points ago

Right, CISC was the most pointless class my freshmen year. Haven't had to look at programming again in three more years of undergrad.

[–]tarheel91 1 point2 points ago

You haven't been doing it right, then. I've had at least one programming based assignment every semester. You never learn anything beyond 2D in class hardly because the only way to do 3D is with computers and large matrices. Of course, you can't do that on a test and it doesn't teach you the principles behind what you're doing, so you're not going to see it in every day class.

However, if you haven't used programming at all, I'm amazed you're a senior without having done any sort of finite element analysis or looked at any sort of complicated 3D system.

[–]fullnelson13 0 points1 point ago

Don't tell me I haven't been doing it right. Have I needed to utilize the programming, as in coding hello world,I learned in the one intro to CISC course required? No, not in the slightest, but obviously solving complex systems of matrices is done every single day.

[–]tarheel91 1 point2 points ago

So you've never had to run a loop to numerically solve a vibrational system or analyze the heat transfer in an object over time?

[–]Trust_an_Engineer 0 points1 point ago

"Seedy State

[–]applecore84 3 points4 points ago

The best: we had a guy who would constantly pronounce 'Boeing' as 'boing' - made me snicker non-stop.

[–]rasputine 2 points3 points ago

I spent three hours confused as shit by a text i'd received because I read "doing" to rhyme with "boing" and couldn't figure out what the fuck was happening.

[–]RainDancingChief 5 points6 points ago

My circuit analysis class is worth 7 credits this term and our prof is East Indian. So hard to follow him.

[–]CamoAnimal 0 points1 point ago

As an engineering student at the second most culturally diverse school in the country, I empathize. At least every other teacher here is from either the Middle East, India, or southern Asia. Forget the accent, half the time I can't ever hear them in the back of a 50+ person class.

[–]WorkingMouse 0 points1 point ago

That's what I loved most about my physics prof. Great guy; good teacher. But he had a very, very strong Indian accent, and after scribbling four pages worth of notes on the board he would turn to the class and say, "Let me put that in plain English for you."

[–]Bugbeard 9 points10 points ago

... Organic motherfucking chemistry. The entire class except for the front-row kids.

[–]speedstix 6 points7 points ago

in a bunch of my electrical engineering classes the front row kids (mostly international students from various asian countries) would get into class early to get the front row. I decided to come in even earlier than them and reserve seats for all my friends. Hilarity ensued.

[–]ohyah 2 points3 points ago

i do this.

[–]Miggaletoe 4 points5 points ago

What's so crazy about OChem? The subject is kind of ridiculous(to much shitty memorization imo) but the lectures/books are easy to follow. Electrons move and here is why. Repeat that 100 times and you can pass the test.

The best part of OChem is how the teachers probably can't answer a lot of questions correctly. There are so many exceptions and shit that isn't completely understood you can easily trip them up. Or they give you "No the book is wrong" lol

[–]claudesoph 86 points87 points ago

*me

[–]snipsnip 10 points11 points ago

Yes! You could split the statement up to make this more clear. I'm also adding a verb to make it even clearer what's going on.

(Look at) my friends and (look at) me.

There are two objects in this sentence, both "my friends" and "me." When you're using the first-person personal pronoun in the object position you should always use the form "me." Now you're probably wondering what the subject of this sentence is since there aren't any more nouns, what could it be? Well, my dear friend, there is no real subject, but an understood one. Can you guess what it is? That's right! It's you! Isn't this exciting?

[–]surjizzle 3 points4 points ago

Guess that's why OP's not in english class

[–]bad_religion 1 point2 points ago

Am I the subject because I am implicitly being commanded to look?

[–]snipsnip 3 points4 points ago

I have no idea. I just made that shit up.

[–]bad_religion 0 points1 point ago

Sounded legit.

[–]snipsnip 0 points1 point ago

Thanks.

[–]bad_religion 0 points1 point ago

You're welcome.

[–]JCJen7 0 points1 point ago

Please?

[–]somkun 0 points1 point ago

or another interpretation:

(This is a picture of) My friends and I, in our engineering class

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]bad_religion 3 points4 points ago

I hardly think making a simple mistake implies a lack of understanding of basic grammar.

[–]alexunderwater -2 points-1 points ago

Because grammar is so crucial to being an engineer.

Spoiler: I'ts not

[–]ski-tibet 1 point2 points ago

I would say that when you're writing a paper or some kind of report that grammar is very important. It helps you look smart and professional.

[–]i_am_a_potato 0 points1 point ago

I just spent tonight with four horrible, horrible grant proposals (written by four fellow engineers), a red pen and a handle of bourbon. If you were correct, I would be much less belligerently drunk right now.

[–]buttaids 0 points1 point ago

(explain why)

[–]Strudel_Cutie_4427 11 points12 points ago

One wouldn't say "I in my engineering class" one would say "me in my engineering class..." Thus the correct phrasing should be "me and my friends in engineering class."

[–]buttaids 6 points7 points ago

So:

Me and my friends in our engineering classes. (Acceptable sentence fragment.)

My friends and I are in our engineering classes. (Acceptable as 'my friends and I' due to insertion of the form of 'to be.')

[–]Mush5 8 points9 points ago

The "my friends" part of the sentence needs to go first regardless of whether me or I is being used. The grammatically correct version of this title would be "My friends and me in our engineering class.".

[–]digitalchris 1 point2 points ago

3 downvoters don't know grammar.

[–]digitalchris 1 point2 points ago

My friends and I are in our engineering classes.

No, you're changing the meaning of the sentence. First of all, it's not true. He was not saying that he and his friends ARE in their engineering class.

The actual meaning contains an implication of the picture that is attached:

[This is a picture of] my friends and me in our engineering classes.

Me and my friends in our engineering classes.

Is also correct, but politeness dictates listing the others before yourself.

[–]buttaids 1 point2 points ago

I realize each sentence has different meanings, I was just trying to provide an example wherein "my friends and I" is the correct way to start the sentence.

[–]surjizzle -2 points-1 points ago

I was just about to type this too...

[–]Papadragon89 6 points7 points ago

Is it just me, or is everyone and their mom an engineer on reddit?

[–]SittingDuckNZ 17 points18 points ago

No, Engineers just feel like they need to tell everyone.

[–]esmith24 14 points15 points ago

i'm an engineering major and engineering is hard. not everyone can graduate with an engineering degree. engineering.

[–]Haruhi_Fujioka 5 points6 points ago

*engineering degree in engineering

[–]MrWonderland18 3 points4 points ago

*with a minor in engineering

[–]Edword23 0 points1 point ago

I can attest to this. I was going to be an EE but I couldn't deal with the work load, as well as I thought there would be more programming in it. Happily working on CS now.

[–]Evermist 2 points3 points ago

No but I imagine a large percentage of engineers are redditors. Also must people know at least one, they make good drinking buddies.

[–]RedAero 4 points5 points ago

It's the only way to cope. Don't judge me.

[–]Evermist 4 points5 points ago

As a premed student I am certainly not judging, I am right there with you.

[–]Angercrank 1 point2 points ago

As a surveyor pot is the only way to deal with engineers. The fuckers don't even know the earth is round.

[–]RedAero 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I'm a surveyor!

[–]Angercrank 1 point2 points ago

surveyor high five

Isn't it great being the interpreter between the pathetic garbage they call plans and the real world? Without us they might have to actually be right once in a while.

[–]RedAero 1 point2 points ago

I just enjoy the fact that when I'm asked "What do you do?" I can answer "I answer the question of "Where", although it sounds a bit dumb in English (I'm Hungarian).

[–]Angercrank 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't sound dumb at all.

It is just crazy that in order to answer that question you got to do half the job of the site forman, the field engineer, the civil engineer, and the drafters for free or the projects screech to a halt.

[–]iLuVtiffany 6 points7 points ago

Teacher: Does everyone understand?

Class: Yes.

[–]RedAero 5 points6 points ago

Here it's usually just stunned silence.

[–]x1n30 4 points5 points ago

Followed by a whispered 'What the fuck?' from up the back.

[–]girldinosaurs 2 points3 points ago

"Alright then, everyone's got it! Let's have a quiz."

[–]m00t_vdb 57 points58 points ago

Wrong, can't be an engineering class if there's a female.

[–]azimir 8 points9 points ago

My school's civil and mechanical engineering courses are well situated with females. At least 25%, and likely 40% of the students are women. Of course my CompSci department...

[–]Nintentard 4 points5 points ago

I'm a female and I am in my university's Computer Science department. I'm not the only one either, there are usually 7-8 girls in a class of 40. Although the men tend to treat us like we don't belong there. It can be rather discouraging sometimes.

[–]azimir 5 points6 points ago

That's encouraging to hear (the 7-8 in 40 number, not the cold shoulder). Industry-wide the US runs about 12% women in CS, so 17 to 20% is pretty good.

I don't know what to tell you about the behavior of the men, though. Sadly, some of it is definitely a sense that 'women don't belong.' I'd put more of it on a 'don't know how to be around women' skill set among the men. Good luck with it, either way.

[–]Nintentard 6 points7 points ago

Thank you. The girls tend to sit together and program together as well so it doesn't get too lonely. However, often times when one of us asks a question, there is always a hum of aggravated sighs from around the room. I think there will be more women in computing very soon though. There seem to be more and more every year. :)

[–]m00t_vdb 0 points1 point ago

Don't be discouraged, it is just social incompetence. And if you'll get to work as an engineer, you'll be whipping guys ass very quickly. (source: life)

[–]RedAero 0 points1 point ago

Weird... Where I live the worst ratio is specifically in Mechanical, then Electrical, then probable CompSci. Civil is about 1 to 5, but god-damn are the girls ugly.

[–]RainDancingChief 5 points6 points ago

Same. But I'm in electrical...Damn it...

[–]m00t_vdb 3 points4 points ago

Physics classes are the worst that I've seen, and I'm an electrical engineer...

[–]RainDancingChief 2 points3 points ago

That's okay, we just go hang out in the building where all the nurses have lectures. Sometimes there will be a biology class before one of out lectures and all these SMOKIN' hot chicks walk out of the lecture hall we're in and it makes us sad cause they're going the wrong way.

[–]JCJen7 0 points1 point ago

I cry evry tyme.

[–]bread_buddy 3 points4 points ago

Can confirm. Physics undergrad, NukeE grad; number of women increased.

[–]rumckle 0 points1 point ago

In my experience most of the women are in medical physics.

[–]safjx 1 point2 points ago

Wait until you get to quantum physics and signal analysis :-D

[–]m00t_vdb 0 points1 point ago

Been there, done that and forever alone...

[–]wanderer11 0 points1 point ago

Intermediate Mechanics of Deformable Solids. The only class I took without a girl.

[–]m00t_vdb 0 points1 point ago

Strange for a class about boobies.

[–]speedstix 0 points1 point ago

yea.. good luck bud. Start looking for females in other disciplines, seriously.

[–]RainDancingChief 0 points1 point ago

My buddies and I just go to the nursing buildings hahaha

[–]whisk3rs 4 points5 points ago

You must be a freshmen. The women drop out after the first year.

[–]azimir 4 points5 points ago

I wish I was a freshman once again (at least age-wise). Instead, I'm an over-educated geezer these days.

No, the women do just fine past freshman year.

Edit: spelling/grammar

[–]SuperSane 1 point2 points ago

Did you mean the women do just as fine as men past freshman year?

[–]azimir 0 points1 point ago

Yes, the dropout rates are just about equivalent every year in the engineering program for both men and women. It might be more visible with the women due to their smaller overall numbers, though.

[–]AWayOut 1 point2 points ago

My Biomedical Engineering class is about 1/6 Female

[–]Typical_Henchmen 1 point2 points ago

false your Biomedical Engineering class is 5/6 non Female... and that has been noted.

[–]speedstix -1 points0 points ago

Always funny to see an attractive woman wearing full makeup, high heels shoes, and nice clothes accidentally walk into an electrical engineering lecture. The waft of BO probably knocks her right out.

[–]gobberpooper 0 points1 point ago

In my school biomed and chem engineering is majority female even though our school is 70-30. Which doesn't matter for me because I'm in electrical engineering where I think there's about 5 females per class.

[–]westdonkeykong 0 points1 point ago

I have 1. So don't you ever dare complain. Ever!

[–]gobberpooper 0 points1 point ago

When I said 5 per class I meant per graduating class. In a classroom there'll be 1, 2 tops.

[–]snipsnip -4 points-3 points ago

Welcome to the 21st century. We're not really glad to have you here with your outdated views, but you'll catch up eventually. Good luck!

[–]gosteelers1 5 points6 points ago

That was my exact face in my accounting classes this morning.

[–]tripstuff 4 points5 points ago

[–]RedAero 0 points1 point ago

At least I can related engineering stuff to the real world... By contrast everything business-y just seems to be entirely made up and theoretical. Plus, I have no idea what the words mean... To me, a bond is a suave secret agent. Or a chemical tie.

[–]Hippokrates 8 points9 points ago

Thermodynamics is the worst :(

[–]wanderer11 4 points5 points ago

I thoroughly enjoyed thermo, heat transfer, and heat transfer lab. They were also some of the most difficult classes I had. I was a TA for 2 semesters in thermo. I don't understand how people can be engineers and not like that stuff.

[–]Miggaletoe 0 points1 point ago

Its the teacher and book. If the teacher is good and the book doesn't suck I think every class is enjoyable. If one is bad it can completely turn you off of the topic. I like the material we are covering(ChemE Thermo) but the book is horrible and the class lectures don't help to much.

[–]sewkewlman 1 point2 points ago

Are you chem e? Thermo was the worst. Maybe it was the professor/book combo but that Koretsky book is horrid.

Edit: not sure why downvote. Go play with fugacity and non ideal fluids then we'll talk.

[–]wanderer11 5 points6 points ago

Mechanical. I heard it's different for you guys. It's too bad though. I really enjoyed my class/teacher/book.

[–]iz2 1 point2 points ago

That book is fine if you have things explained well along with it. I was dreading fugacity, but when it came up, it was not that difficult when done with some proper examples.

[–]islandloner 0 points1 point ago

:O had koretsky too!

[–]Ferrarity 2 points3 points ago

I love Thermodynamics - it's my favourite module this term. Signals and Systems on the other hand...........

[–]artard 3 points4 points ago

You watch what you say about signals and systems!

[–]UZUMATI-JAMESON 2 points3 points ago

I sat in my friends engineering class one day and understood like two things.

[–]checkraptor 3 points4 points ago

So did your friend. depending on the professor's accent, I usually zone out and end up teaching myself everything.

[–]UZUMATI-JAMESON 0 points1 point ago

Valid point

[–]speedstix -1 points0 points ago

the stuff engineers talk about is always funny. I always try to imagine if I didn't know anything about electrical systems when my colleagues talk about designs. Shit would probably blow people's minds.

[–]UZUMATI-JAMESON 1 point2 points ago

It is! My dad works at Williams oil and gas, he's an IT, but he hangs out with the engineers and they are always talking about crazy stuff that goes over my head, especially the petroleum engineers.

[–]kamodan 2 points3 points ago

It doesn't get better with time, either.

[–]bread_buddy 0 points1 point ago

Why are liberal arts majors in engineering classes?

[–]fekasaurus 1 point2 points ago

This is every physics class I have ever taken.

Source: I am a physics major.

[–]bfitz2 0 points1 point ago

I have the same exact reaction with my partner in engineering

[–]letmelaughfirst 0 points1 point ago

Comprehending Dynamics if you never took physics*

[–]davidt0504 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, me in my physics classes :/ I'm looking forward to changing to engineering classes.

[–]moshulu 1 point2 points ago

You all think YOUR engineering classes have no women? Bitch please I'm a computer engineer. There are no girls in my entire major!

[–]Tera_Lizard 0 points1 point ago

Yup and the midterms looks even worse... ugh... can't wait for this quarter to be over with thermodynamics and fluid dynamics...

[–]Mashiba 1 point2 points ago

Ah Nala the only animal I have ever wanted to have sex with.

[–]tripstuff 0 points1 point ago

One of my CS teachers talks exactly like Borat. Took him like 5 tries to say "trapezoid" today.

[–]redditrocks1972 0 points1 point ago

Another good title for this could be: "my friends and I in 7th grade just learning about sex for the first time..." :p oh this were the days....

[–]GallopingGeese 0 points1 point ago

Standard deviation, boys. Get to work.

[–]Rc591323 0 points1 point ago

*My friends and me

[–]Translocater 0 points1 point ago

Simba: Pumba said I looked like Beyonce in her countdown video

Nala: Damn...He's right!

http://youtu.be/2XY3AvVgDns?t=21s

[–]elosoloco 1 point2 points ago

Heat and Mass transfer professor looks exactly like Leonard Nimoy in the most recent Star Trek movie

[–]cappnplanet 0 points1 point ago

Now kiss.

[–]imasexykitteh 0 points1 point ago

I had a horrible calc 3 professor.... every time he said "factor" it sounded like "fuck herrrr"

[–]speedstix 0 points1 point ago

wait until microwave theory. Real men make it through that class.

[–]CamWin -1 points0 points ago

I'm glad to see you are enthusiastic in your chosen major.

[–]fungixl 0 points1 point ago

That feel. That feel is why I'm on reddit and not studying for epistemology.

[–]lurkinglikeabauce 0 points1 point ago

I know that feel...

[–]iLOLatAll 0 points1 point ago

i don't understand. there's a girl in your class??!?

[–]Bezulba 0 points1 point ago

My feelings during the Match classes in engineering.. goddamn those were a bitch..

How the fuck can you do calculation with an imaginary number? IT DOESN'T FUCKING EXIST!

[–]oakhoof 0 points1 point ago

you have a girl in your class?

[–]Kr0nos 0 points1 point ago

Me and twin me looking at each other at age 8 after seeing my first vagina. An 80s porn hairy bush vagina.

[–]Kr0nos 0 points1 point ago

PS: I love pussy.

[–]RoaringHawk 0 points1 point ago

"Charasterstics"...

Mixing 'B's and 'P's; "boint", "beoble", "lablace"...

[–]EvilPhd666 0 points1 point ago

Yeah , you can throw common sense out of your life now. I've worked over a decade with these folk - their grip on reality is... well you have to calculate the force of the grip. Is it mechanical or hydrological? What location did they use to source said grip device?

Is it better to make it out of what? That's NOT IN THE BOOK GTFO! I don't care if you can prove if it's a better grip, it's not in the freaking book, therefore it is not an option!

Now what is the crystalline structure of the material? Is it more ductile or brittle? What is the stress limit of your grip on reality? Now lets make math.

Engineering... fun times.

[–]Trewq343 0 points1 point ago

MY FRIEND AND ME!!!

[–]QTsexkitten 0 points1 point ago

That, except there probably isn't a girl there.

[–]Cornroll -1 points0 points ago

Be sure to let us know when you finally bang your friend

[–]ThBlkBlzr -2 points-1 points ago

Do you and your friends grow up and have a baby together....?

[–]snipsnip -2 points-1 points ago

I don't get it. How are "my friends and I" just two individuals? Are you lion to me?

[–]Hyperian 0 points1 point ago

oh so you noticed how there are no girls in class. welcome to your new world.

[–]polite_fox -1 points0 points ago

I knew that feel. Then I switched to art. Same fucking thing every now and again, especially with modern art.

[–]westdonkeykong 4 points5 points ago

Not sure if trolling... Or serious.

[–]polite_fox 0 points1 point ago

Not trollin'. I was engineering, but did photography passionately. You know your major isn't for you when you don't care about the classes and you cheat whenever you can because you don't care to learn the material. So I switched to photography to work as a commercial photographer, which is in the art department. And because it's in the art department, they make you take the artsy-fartsy classes which I didn't give a flying fuck about either. So I know that feel, and every know and then feel the same damn way not understanding how the fuck people sell what they do and make bank. Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist's_shit

[–]speedstix 3 points4 points ago

they teach art in universities now?

[–]polite_fox 1 point2 points ago

You'd be surprised what they teach in universities now.

[–]tripstuff 0 points1 point ago

"Meat Judging" is a popular elective at my school. >_>

[–]yvan369 0 points1 point ago

That looks like me in my evidence class.

[–]elzorrodorito 0 points1 point ago

My thermo prof is absolutely not consistent with her notation and makes a huge amount of errors. I never have any idea what she is writing on the board. Then her grad student TA does a 1 hour study session and I understand everything my prof with a PhD couldn't explain over 4 weeks of class. I think about how much my prof gets paid compared to the person who is actually teaching me and it doesn't seem fair.
