Popeye is indeed a bad ass. Went to a Primus show last weekend and in-between sets they played old Popeye episodes on a massive screen. They were weird as hell, but I want to see all of them! Cartoons ain't like they used to be!! My favorite of the ones they played.

Sailors forearms and calves actually really got that way from days spent climbing and swinging up in the rigging. Their hands were so calloused they could slide down ropes without gloves. "Skylarking" means playing grab ass up among the masts where they could literally jump and swing like monkeys.

Live near Allen's canning and they have a statue of Popeye out front. They put fence up around it now to keep people from messing with it. I don't have any pictures at hand, but the next time I drive by I will make sure to take a few. I have told my little boy that Popeye was a local and the statue was put up in his honor.

I can't find any proof but my dad (a sailor in the navy) always claimed that Popeye was based on a real diver in the 20s or something who was hugely muscular but came up too quickly from a dive and got the bends which is why his body is so weirdly shaped.
