It's funny, despite the stereotype, a lot of the more "neckbeardy" "hardcore" gamers I know are thin. Not like, "ooh that's sexy" thin but "guy that would break his wrist picking up anything heavier than a controller" thin.

That seems really sad in a way. If it was a videogame themed wedding then yea this would be cool but it looks like somewhat of a traditional wedding...with a videogame reference thrown in.

Look r/gaming, we need to have a talk.

This is not cool. You know it's not cool. We are adults here, and if you want to feel powerful by putting down another person by their looks on what is probably the happiest day of their life, so be it. But you need to understand that when you make comments about someone, that's a person. Not a single one of you would be able to say "whale" to her face, nor her husband. This isn't just rude; it's wrong, and you know it. There's a line between good fun and being hurtful, and you crossed that line a long time ago.

Oh, and the fact that I know damn well that I'm going to get downvoted into oblivion shows how much faith I have left in you at this point.

I'd like to see a picture of every guy I play with/against online. I think they'd keep the usual insulting comments to a minimum when many are found out to be rocking the same body type as the bride they're making fun of. I end up playing male toons on MMOs because I've been harassed, which I've found goes as a relative norm for fellow girl MMO players. It's not that males make up the majority, it's just that the women are hiding from their insulting antics. That's just my experience, though.

Nope. I play tabletop games too. Really any area where most of the individuals are from one demographic, and use that majority against the minority (whether it be by race, sexual orientation, gender, body type...) to put them down.

As piles of carbon and water, we are built to be objectified.

Even if you want to be all namby-pamby and subjective about it (or "spiritual"), your prefrontal cortex constantly demands that you objectify the opposite sex. Your entire mental capacity is streamlined for it.

Why? Because certain traits are not good for survival. Back before we beat the shit out of the traditional survival/natural selection, we looked for certain traits, more specifically the more opposite traits, to make the most resiliant offspring possible.

No matter what way you look at it, whether you be an objective moral nihilist, or a "white knight" of "all that is good of the land", objectification is good. The only ones who oppose it are those who haven't thought about it for more than ten seconds.

I wasn't talking about the objectification per se -- we all do that as part of being sexual animals, like you said.

What I have the problem with is that someone posts a wedding picture of two obviously nerdy people getting married, and then all of a sudden r/gaming feels the need to make the bride less of a person (by way of objectification that is not only a conscious decision but is also meant to hurt) by insulting her.

Imagine if almost a hundred people called you fat, or ugly, or whatever part of yourself you are sensitive about. The fact that we can't seem to rise above our animal objectification and learn some empathy is what really bothers me.

And bring on the downvotes, people. I can handle being put down for being empathetic.
