So... how did it smell?

[–]ingl0rius[S] 774 points775 points ago

Disappointingly average

[–]Borrybay 69 points70 points ago

Please post the smell please

[–]ingl0rius[S] 64 points65 points ago

You can download the photo to your pc, put your face right up to the screen and smell it that way

[–]Lampjaw 24 points25 points ago

Tears and semen?

[–]ANAL_QUEEN 6 points7 points ago

Sounds like a fun Saturday night.

[–]ingl0rius[S] 1 point2 points ago

Another great band name

[–]makopolo2001 24 points25 points ago

Smells like rainbows.

[–]DecentShrimp 10 points11 points ago

You're Canadian, right?

[–]feelingsofwhite 6 points7 points ago

oh that's right, other countries dont support smell:// protocol. I'm terribly sorry, sometimes we forget. Really, it's nothing that fantastic I wouldn't worry about it. have a nice day :) again, my apologies. sorry :)

[–]pluffmudpie 6 points7 points ago

OP will surely deliver.

[–]nodnarbiter 139 points140 points ago

Better than unexpectedly nasty

[–]fattyforhire 38 points39 points ago

Maybe all dvd's smell bad, so this one is both average and nasty smelling

[–]argen27 26 points27 points ago

We need to get a bunch of different DVD's to compare.

[–]eyereport 32 points33 points ago

I'll put together a grant application. You guys start finding test subjects. Remember, we need enough for a control group AND a placebo group.

[–]purenitrogen 12 points13 points ago

Burnt discs may give off a different smell as well, don't forget those.

[–]BigDaddyShitstain 15 points16 points ago

Memorex cds smell like maple oatmeal.

[–]purenitrogen 11 points12 points ago

Probably made in Canada.

[–]fullmetaljackass 7 points8 points ago

Glad it's not just me then. Those things totally smell like a really fake chemically maple syrup.

[–]Redequlus 1 point2 points ago

Probably not made in Canada.

[–]Cpt_Wolf 4 points5 points ago

So do my TDK dual layer +Rs!

[–]heathersak 3 points4 points ago

So do the new Canadian $100 bills.

[–]iUsedtoHadHerpes 2 points3 points ago

I can't remember the brand, but I've had some that clearly smelled like celery.

It's probably got something to do with the plastic they use, because I had to use these big bulky plastic envelopes for a job where I used to work, and they had the same exact celery smell.

[–]Woolio 3 points4 points ago

Was it a bio-plastic made from recycled plant matter?

[–]eyereport 7 points8 points ago

You've just added a good $2 million to our research costs, but it's worth it if we're going to be thorough.

We should probably also form a focus group to determine how people feel about the idea of discs smelling.

[–]TheSicks 3 points4 points ago

I would imagine that it's 'burned’, not 'burnt'.

[–]argen27 3 points4 points ago

Disc sounds like a great plan.

[–]speakthespeech 23 points24 points ago

Please no

[–]philly_fan_in_chi 10 points11 points ago

But this is the point in time that we as a Reddit community get to judge people's puns. It's entertaining to watch them evolve from decent to terrible within a span of about 10 minutes.

[–]speakthespeech 15 points16 points ago

Waiting for the one fool to push the joke too far. It's social Jenga.

[–]eyereport 12 points13 points ago

Remember, we only want reliable test subjects. No one that seems too CD.

[–]argen27 8 points9 points ago

Good point. They might scratch our plans.

[–]eyereport 8 points9 points ago

ISO-pose we could use just a few...

[–]qwertytwo 9 points10 points ago

Skip to it, we can't just laser round all day.

[–]CANCER_PUNCH 1 point2 points ago

a control group AND a placebo group.

Maybe thatsthejoke, but those are the same thing.

[–]eyereport 2 points3 points ago

Unless you're measuring placebo effect! :D

[–]rokinlobster 0 points1 point ago

Placebo is cds

[–]ItalianRapscallion 2 points3 points ago

All around the world, people begin sniffing their dvds

[–]ingl0rius[S] 2 points3 points ago

But for it to be 'strange' , wouldn't it have to smell different ?

[–]UNHDude 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes I smell nasty things just so I can feel alive.

[–]r0b0l0g0d0 -1 points0 points ago

FALSE

[–]DRUNK_CYCLIST 0 points1 point ago

Troll making thousands of people sniff dvd's

[–]trekore 5 points6 points ago

I had a dvd smell like old syrup...

[–]qridproqro 2 points3 points ago

I get DVDs like that all the time. Thought I was the only one.

[–]liquidben 2 points3 points ago

Jake: The thing with frogs is they got a real subtle smell. It's kinda like when you open a new thing of CD-R's.

Finn: Like...electric celery?

Jake: Yeah, but subtler.

[–]ryptophan 1 point2 points ago

So, slightly strange is average? Well... I feel better about myself!

[–]Acheeze 2 points3 points ago

Tricks on you, they just wanted you to smell a DVD in public.

[–]enza252 1 point2 points ago

CGP Book?

[–]Madowx 0 points1 point ago

This was the reply I came here for. Thank you.

[–]lisabadcat 0 points1 point ago

What was the software?

[–]metalrader 38 points39 points ago

Like electric celery?

[–]eyereport 17 points18 points ago

[–]nermid 6 points7 points ago

I was so ready to subscribe to that... :(

[–]pseudolobster 11 points12 points ago

Try /r/bandnames instead. It's already established and has a few hundred subscribers.

[–]nermid 0 points1 point ago

Hooray!

[–]eyereport 5 points6 points ago

I'm willing to start it. I love hypothetical band names.

Actually, one of my favorite things is hypothetical business names. A friend of mine wanted to open a tapas restaurant where the wait staff doesn't wear shirts. We'd call it "Topless Tapas."

[–]Rightaway 16 points17 points ago

I want to open a same day service seamstress shop. Name it Tailor Swift.

[–]eyereport 3 points4 points ago

I just peed a little.

[–]anu26 4 points5 points ago

You're In Nation!

[–]scottagro 1 point2 points ago

With a name like that you KNOW those dudes always have weed.

[–]ingl0rius[S] 10 points11 points ago

That is surprisingly accurate!

[–]drumstyx 4 points5 points ago

I know exactly what you're talking about.

[–]Pwezem 9 points10 points ago

Yeah! Only subtler.

[–]bossrabbit 1 point2 points ago

This. A million times this. Lots of CDs smell like celery...

[–]superryley 1 point2 points ago

Awesome. I have long said that CD-RWs smell like celery seed. I am glad to see I am not the only one who smells this.

[–]daftfunkbot 5 points6 points ago

Like Big Foot's dick

[–]babysealsareyummy 2 points3 points ago

This is worse than the time the raccoon got in the copier!

[–]knighmare 1 point2 points ago

Like a thousand rotting steaks wrapped in dirty diaper on fire.

[–]treckooxx 0 points1 point ago

slightly strange

[–]jtisch 1 point2 points ago

Strange. Didn't you read the warning?

[–]PunchOfTheFalcon 130 points131 points ago

I'm willing to bet money that this is a CGP product, they're the masters of revision banter

[–]westyfield 43 points44 points ago

I bloody love CGP. Their awful puns ("What do you call a baby sheep standing in a river? A lamb-in-a-flow!") got me through A-level physics with my sanity intact.

[–]abusque 20 points21 points ago

What do you call a baby sheep standing in a river? A lamb-in-a-flow!

Not sure I get it, is it supposed to be a pun on "laminar flow"?

[–]orangefoodie 11 points12 points ago

It makes more sense if you imagine your typical British accent!

[–]misanthr0p1c 11 points12 points ago

It makes more sense if you to decide to be insane.

[–]TheBakedPotato 2 points3 points ago

Hello, CGP jokes!

[–]westyfield 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, it was in the section about fluid mechanics.

[–]glaedr 2 points3 points ago

I always found them irritatingly overcrowded with arrows and boxes...I couldn't learn from them at all. So I had to force myself to battle through the pun-free textbooks to get through A-Level Physics!

[–]misanthr0p1c 2 points3 points ago

Hah! You just think that's your sanity!

[–]zjbrickbrick 26 points27 points ago

You are correct.

[–]byte-smasher 9 points10 points ago

Cue hilarious Amazon reviews

[–]Itza420 3 points4 points ago

diasppointing it's empty

[–]mcguire 4 points5 points ago

Definitely a helpful review.

[–]Really_Likes_Nutella 5 points6 points ago

We used to go through them and rate the puns.

[–]ingl0rius[S] 4 points5 points ago

Spot on

[–]Dougie_J 56 points57 points ago

All CGP products have random funny things like that on the bottom corner. I just finished my A levels and my chemistry said something along the lines of "For indoor or outdoor use only".

And the maths one had a double page spread in the middle all about cows.

[–]LankyN 14 points15 points ago

One of the original writers of the revision guides were in my school, and they weren't even supposed to include the jokes on them. They did it purely to stop copying notes into it being so monotonous and keep them sane whilst writing

[–]IT_Derp 2 points3 points ago

CGP jokes were hiloursly bad...you would laugh at the point they even printed it.

[–]mindlessrambling 1 point2 points ago

I had that book! Page 18, the cow page. Unfortunately thats the only thing about maths i remember..

[–]WK_of_Angmar 2 points3 points ago

I can confirm about the page about cows in the middle of the Maths revision guide: page 18 of the AS-level Mathematics revision guide. First paragraph reads:

The stuff on this page isn't strictly on the syllabus. But I've included it anyway because I reckon it's really important stuff that you ought to know.

Also, the CGP customer service staff are just great. I (jokingly) sent them an email not expecting a reply:

To Whom It May Concern,

Within page 3 of your CGP GCSE English book entitled "An Inspector Calls: The Text Guide" (ETI43) printed in 2011, there is a summation of all the characters in the play. There is a photograph image of each character, however the image of The Inspector (the seventh image if scanning the page from left to right, top to bottom) lacks the translucent shadow present within each of the other portrait photographs. I would recommend a rectification of this formatting inconsistency to help keep the photographs uniform and maintain the high quality standard present within every CGP book I have purchased thus far.

By the way, great books, I have no clue what I would do without them.

And received this reply:

Thanks very much for your email.

We’re really sorry that you’ve found a bit of a formatting error in our fab An Inspector Calls Text Guide. Having taken a good look at the book in question, we’ve found that you’re quite right. Although this isn’t a glaring error, we’ll make sure we pass the details over to the relevant department here, who can arrange for it to be rectified at the next reprint.

We’re chuffed to bits that you’ve found our books so useful and hope you’ll continue to do so for many years to come!

Best wishes

Proof.

[–]Noctox 2 points3 points ago

I've always thought new CDs smelled like syrup, but my friends all call me crazy. Glad to know there's a fellow cds-smell-like-syrup'er out there! (Sorry, couldn't think of a better name)

[–]Really_Likes_Nutella 2 points3 points ago

They smell disgusting. Not like waffles.

CGP? I have a few books with the following on the back:

  • Do not pass go. Do not collect £200

  • Do not use while sleeping or unconscious

  • Caution! This is not a protective device

  • Do not chew

  • CGP asserts its right to be recognised as the perpetrator of at least 5% of the silliness in the world today

[–]WK_of_Angmar 2 points3 points ago

  • CAUTION: This book contains more stuff than you can shake a stick at

(A2 level Mathematics revision guide, Exam Board: Edexcel -- MER61)

[–]lookandgasp 7 points8 points ago

that's a good old CGP product :)

[–]GotSka81 8 points9 points ago

I think the use of the word "mustn't" is just as odd.

[–]anelezel 4 points5 points ago

Electric celery.

[–]Brandon_Storm 5 points6 points ago

The band The County Medical Examiners has an album called Olidous Operattas that smells like rotting corpses.

I have it.

It's not a joke.

[–]Trident_True 1 point2 points ago

I have about 10 of those old CGP books stacked up in my cupboard now. They made revising slightly less boring.

[–]iam8up 6 points7 points ago

[–]timbartimbar 1 point2 points ago

I hate the smell of DVDs.

[–]mikem92 3 points4 points ago

Are you talking about the word "mustn't"? Because I'm not sure if that's a real word.

[–]Kerbobotat 10 points11 points ago

Surely you've seen the multiple TIL posts about contractions in the english language? You cou'dn't've missed it, although maybe I shou'dn't've assumed everyone had seen them, if you'd've seen them, you wou'dn't've posted this comment. So the only logical conclusion, is that you musn't've seen the posts. :)

Edit: Thanks newskul, I missed one :D

[–]newskul 3 points4 points ago

[–]coolnow 5 points6 points ago

[–]Platinumized 1 point2 points ago

If they make the CD then immediately package it, it could still smell. Most plastics have a unique smell when they are melting and being made. CD's are usually made of Polycarbonate.

Source: I'm in Plastics

Also, if you buy a brand new tempurpedic bed, it will smell out of the package for the same reasons.

[–]NotThisTimeDave 1 point2 points ago

TIL evil software companies trick people into smelling their DVDs.

[–]Waynker87 0 points1 point ago

Yes.. Please tell me you took a whiff.

[–]M3wThr33 1 point2 points ago

I ordered a DVD from Amazon once. Had a strange smell. Noticed spots on the data side. Sent it back for a replacement and noticed the same issue. I guess the whole batch was bad.

[–]ingl0rius[S] 2 points3 points ago

No warning?

[–]blowuptheking 0 points1 point ago

What does that bit on the right side of the picture say?

[–]argen27 0 points1 point ago

It's in 4d

[–]Riseofashes 0 points1 point ago

I remember the willy wonka and the chocolate factory DVD case smelt of chocolate. That was interesting...

[–]HarryLeeSmith 0 points1 point ago

what software is this?

[–]drcrunknasty 0 points1 point ago

Smells like honesty, which happens to smell like old ladies and hose water. Strange.

[–]SmokeyMcDabs 1 point2 points ago

Ya know what I noticed? No software for American students would cost so little...my books and software would have come to about $1000 if I didn't buy most of it in International Editions...saved about $800

[–]Poorpauls 1 point2 points ago

Smells a bit like molases. In Canada we just got new 50 and 100 dollar bills that are plastic and they kind of smell the same. I'll bet it's the exact same chemical.

[–]BadAim 0 points1 point ago

....wat

[–]ubc2015[!] 0 points1 point ago

Was it by CGP by any chance? I used to use CGP study guides for my GCSE/A-Levels, and they had some histerical back cover captions

[–]brock_lee 0 points1 point ago

I sell a CD online. I have the surface printed at a place in Indiana. They use some kind of "digital silkscreen" they call it. The discs smell horrible when I first get a batch.

[–]Catch22af 1 point2 points ago

This looks like a more sophisticated version of the "if you have cancer your hand will be bigger in relation to you face" and then as you bring your hand closer to your face to check, your asshole friend smacks your hand so you hit your face.

[–]Kidd_Funkadelic 1 point2 points ago

So what did it smell like?

[–]the_advice_line -1 points0 points ago

OP trolls everyone to start sniffing dvds.

[–]jjp3217 0 points1 point ago

Right now I'm at work taking a shit while on reddit and getting paid for it.

[–]7ewis 1 point2 points ago

Haha they have messages like this on the back of 'CGP Revision' books, I have a few at home!

[–]munchies1122 0 points1 point ago

Im sitting in a porta-potty that reaks of ammonia and when i read that the smell intensified 3 fold. Fucking nasty

[–]Radico87 0 points1 point ago

You have the perfect get-out-of-jail-free card. Flatulate to your bowel's desire knowing you can shift blame onto the dvds.

[–]beefer 1 point2 points ago

Cheap burnable cds and Dvds use a pthalocyanine dye that isn't archival so they do tend to smell chemically when you open them. The longer you leave them, the more they break down and off-gas. Less so with the burnable Azo based Dvds (like the verbatim blue). So maybe they just burn this software instead of having them stamped.

[–]Walletau 0 points1 point ago

I swear to god, this particular brand of burnable cd's had a distinct curry smell.

[–]palewailer 1 point2 points ago

Maybe it's only a smell Britons can sense.

[–]random_echo 0 points1 point ago

something slightly odd

[–]philanderopist 0 points1 point ago

Scratch n' Sniff porn? Fucking technology man!

[–]JohnnyRyall 0 points1 point ago

I always smell my new DVDs. Don't judge me.

[–]tawke 0 points1 point ago

My cd of R.E.M. - Monster had a more than slightly strange smell. It was incredible and indescribable and still retains a slight aroma if anyone wants to pop round and try to describe it.

I've no idea how the smelling of my R.E.M. cd came about though.

[–]Wagnerian 0 points1 point ago

Well, what DVD/software is that?

[–]Nick_12 0 points1 point ago

Scratch and sniff, or just sniff?

[–]yasahirod 1 point2 points ago

Since when do DVDs have an ISBN?

[–]EternalRemnant 0 points1 point ago

So what I'm getting from this is that I need to smell and categorize all my DVD/cd's by a smell hierarchy...FOR SCIENCE!

[–]grant007 0 points1 point ago

I saw this on pics and had to double check because I thought it would be on r/wtf...

[–]thepseudonym12344 0 points1 point ago

That would be a CGP Science book, they all have weird things wrote above the barcode, the one i have to hand says "trade in before november 2010 for a free horse". Also is it a DVD? it has a ISBN code...... isnt that for books?

[–]ipeench 0 points1 point ago

I once got a cd that smelled like a petting zoo. It was .... Weird.

[–]Hefeweize 0 points1 point ago

Mustn't!

[–]pizza_bro 1 point2 points ago

I still remember the smell of Amiga games when you opened the box.

[–]GMonsoon 0 points1 point ago

"Woodsy, with a piquant aftersmell reminiscent of aged cheese"

[–]baracudaboy 0 points1 point ago

Have you ever smelled a new DVD, they smell like caramel popcorn!

[–]Stony_Brony 0 points1 point ago

Be careful, you don't want that lingering around.

[–]Twitch8605 0 points1 point ago

What's "Mustn't"???

[–]joelpub 0 points1 point ago

Is it the word "mustn't"?

[–]samettleman 1 point2 points ago

Is it made by CGP? The same style warning appeared on the back of my revision guide.

[–]kkkilla 0 points1 point ago

i don't know why, but i expected the UPC number to be "8675309". cause that would be awesome.

[–]the8atman 0 points1 point ago

Some dipshit probably sued the company for assaulting his sense of smell.

[–]jimbromley 0 points1 point ago

[–]Retrokicker13 0 points1 point ago

Also... the usage of mustn't seems really strange to me.
