So apparently I went to the IT zoo (imgur.com)

Engineers are not the same as people who work in IT.
[–]imakitty 146 points147 points148 points 1 day ago
I was going to say that doesn't look like a sad closet with racks of computers and crushed dreams at all.
[–]muyuu 4 points5 points6 points 23 hours ago
The term IT has evolved into something coming out of IT Crowd, but it used to be quite generic. Basically someone working in Information Technologies (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering and also all around programmers without formal qualifications and "computer people").
[–]moodog72 49 points50 points51 points 19 hours ago
IT does not now, nor has it ever, covered electrical engineers. One builds the chips on a computer, the other loads software and installs them.
[–]davidzlocker3 5 points6 points7 points 17 hours ago
Wouldn't that fall under computer engineering? (Legitimate question...cause I don't know.)
[–]Propane 11 points12 points13 points 16 hours ago
Yeah. I got a CpE degree and we did more low voltage dc stuff and logic gates etc. The EEs at our college did all the high power and controls type stuff. There's a fair amount of overlap, though.
[–]Jerky_McYellsalot 0 points1 point2 points 10 hours ago
I'm aware of at least one top-ten engineering program in the USA that officially combines it into computer and electrical engineering.
[–]Propane 0 points1 point2 points 9 hours ago
I'm sure it happens, but that's not how my school did it. I'd also guess it's promoted as a combination of the two, and not just called EE, because the distinction is definitely still there - they are very different specialties.
[–]relet 5 points6 points7 points 13 hours ago
Where I studied, computer engineering was specifically designed to be the interface between computer science and electrical engineering.
We always were able to pretend we were more versed in the other domain.
[–]Manifesto13 1 point2 points3 points 10 hours ago
Most of my friends in EE have gotten jobs in the IT sector. Just my 2cents.
[–]muyuu -11 points-10 points-9 points 18 hours ago
EE is de facto very well into the field of Information Technology. Much more so than what nowadays most call "IT people".
[–]moodog72 0 points1 point2 points 17 hours ago
I believe you just made my point. What we call IT people are not electrical engineers. You said it better though.
[–]muyuu 0 points1 point2 points 15 hours ago
Well, this battle is lost (IT having stopped meaning what it actually stands for) but the point was that this wasn't always like this. Early 90s and IT was actually Information Technologies, a broad set of fields of study.
[–]Mizery -1 points0 points1 point 19 hours ago
false
[–]dilutedmorals -1 points0 points1 point 14 hours ago
So true.
[–]_WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW -122 points-121 points-120 points 1 day ago*
uh.. fucking GED.......
I'm an engineer you asshole. You don't get to my level of IT without being an engineer. Also, IT means many other things which there are engineers.
[–]too_many_legs 30 points31 points32 points 1 day ago*
Wow come on man, can't you just entertain his idea without being a dick about it. Be nicer to people when you correct them and you'll get farther in life.
EDIT: Also, just because you're an engineer that works in IT doesn't mean all engineers work in IT. i.e Mechanical engineers, Civil engineers, etc...
[–]choppedupbabies 21 points22 points23 points 1 day ago
He's not an engineer like a civil engineer; that's actually an insult to real licensed engineers. The real engineers are where people die when they fuck up, not jerks who pass a vendor exam and cop an attitude.
[–]Phrodo_00 20 points21 points22 points 1 day ago
well, technically there are situations where people could die because of a network outage, but it's pretty rare.
[–]jhmed 10 points11 points12 points 1 day ago*
What about the folks who drive the trains? Are they really engineers? Because if they don't blow the train's whistle people could die, so are they considered "real" engineers? If not, then why do they have that title?
[–]choppedupbabies 8 points9 points10 points 1 day ago
In my country (The US) the choo choo engineers are indeed licensed by the Federal Government, so yeah, I'd say they have more claim to the title than a CCIE.
[–]Titus70CE 11 points12 points13 points 1 day ago
Choo choo engineers are most best engineers.
[–]Malazin 4 points5 points6 points 1 day ago
There are plenty of engineering disciplines that don't require the possibility of death to be called an engineer.
-An Electrical Engineer
[–]Cuselax5 5 points6 points7 points 17 hours ago
In my field, if an EE fucks up people can get hurt/killed.
[–]Malazin 0 points1 point2 points 17 hours ago
Sure, but in mine the worst you'll get is maybe a small fire with some slightly toxic fumes (consumer electronics)
[–]Cuselax5 0 points1 point2 points 15 hours ago
This whole discussion is silly. There are lots of engineers in lots of fields that do a lot of different things.
[–]_WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW -56 points-55 points-54 points 1 day ago
I ranked myself
Also, "network engineer" is like "domestic engineer". Everyone understands that it's not real engineering. Being able to design and build networks isn't applied physics (engineering) it's applied technology (technician).
no your fucking wrong its engineering. Everyone calls it engineering. Look it up on job sites, wikipedia, acedemic publications. Its engineering you idiot. Look up "WAN Engineer" you idiot dumbass.
[–]GuardianReflex 30 points31 points32 points 1 day ago
And none of those qualifications would matter to a reputable employer if they saw how you spoke to people.
[–]therealflinchy 13 points14 points15 points 1 day ago
As some one in telecommunications, network 'engineer' is such a wank title
You're a highly advanced tech.
[–]imMute 2 points3 points4 points 18 hours ago
you're* it's* It's*
[–]Kruug 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
So because everyone else uses wrong terminology, you get by on a technicality. That's like saying underwater basket weaving is a real major...
[–]quaxon 0 points1 point2 points 16 hours ago*
They mean "engineering" like they mean "entry level" as in its just a word that doesnt mean what it actually means. Source, im an ME
[–]grubas 17 points18 points19 points 1 day ago
Apparently typing barely coherent English is a requirement of being an engineer...
[–]HeroOfCanton 8 points9 points10 points 1 day ago
You can't just call yourself an engineer without being one.
[–]WhyArentYouNMyOffice -3 points-2 points-1 points 16 hours ago
My company calls me a software engineer. So I just roll with it.
[–]McVader 6 points7 points8 points 1 day ago
So what do you actually do during the day? You, the person not the proverbial 'you' as 'What does a network engineer do'?
[–]kinnadian 10 points11 points12 points 1 day ago
He engineers networks, thought as much would be obvious.
[–]_WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW -52 points-51 points-50 points 1 day ago

I guarantee the internet would be fine if you suddenly vanished off the face of the Earth.
[–]Stingray88 31 points32 points33 points 1 day ago
Actually, I think the internet would improve if he suddenly vanished off the face of the Earth.
[–]_WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW -40 points-39 points-38 points 1 day ago
no I have a CCAr. I bet you dont even know enough to pass net+, plebe
[–]imakitty 11 points12 points13 points 1 day ago
Oh Cisco Certified Architect, So... Project Manager. Do you even put out Cat 6, Test Wireless Zones, or Work with Switches these days or is it just diagrams? Or are you just throwing out Net Related certifications, because the way you type online I know of no organization that would willingly hire you.
Project Manager
no, you shittard. Im also a CCIE.
no I use fiber because I'm not a CCNA plebe.
I work with multilayer switch routers which have the ability to reconstruct packets in the data link layer. This is before the NRZ-I catches errors and uses a complex spanning tree to prevent the network from bringing down. Also, SONET is used to multiplex and create a standard ring protocol. This literally cost millions of dollars. You probably wouldn't understand it anyways.
I happen to let you know that I'm employeed by a organization.
[–]Rentun 6 points7 points8 points 15 hours ago
Yeah, you don't have an IE.
What the fuck is a "switch router?" NRZI doesn't catch anything, it's a signaling method, not a protocol with error checking and packets don't exist on the data link layer. They're called frames, and if you had anything close to an IE, you'd know that.
It sounds like you just grabbed a bunch of networking jargon from some site and pasted them into your post.
Also, everyone who is employed by someone other than an individual is employed by "an organization"
[–]imakitty 10 points11 points12 points 1 day ago*
You probably wouldn't understand it anyways.
That's a pretty bold assumption there broseph.
Well I wouldn't tell them about you reddit account.
Well now I know you're a moron, thanks for clearing that up though. Alright I take that back... you're just being an unnecessary dickbag.
Implying that CCNA's don't work with Fiber all the time, in fact implying that having a CCNA doesn't require knowing most of the modern items used at the Physical Layer. MFW

Lol plebe, you love that word
I build 4g mobile networks and you don't see me talking down to anyone
[–]gockets 0 points1 point2 points 15 hours ago
This makes so little sense for so many reasons. Poor effort all around.
[–]Mizery 0 points1 point2 points 19 hours ago
Is your name Nick Burns?
[–]MegaZambam 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
Either way, just because you specifically are an engineer working in IT does not mean that all engineers work in IT.
[–]roger_ranter 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
Be honest- you got a little help from Al Gore.
So, you work for ICANN? Otherwise you don't make the internet work. You make your company's intranet work and make sure they can access the real internet...
[–]Kruug 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
I know quite a few network admins who never got their diploma. They learned what they needed to know and did their jobs. They didn't flaunt around student loans like it's a source of power...

IT != Engineer.
[–]absentmindedjwc 38 points39 points40 points 1 day ago
Indeed. Some in IT may be engineers, but not all engineers are in IT.
[–]bunbun22 -8 points-7 points-6 points 1 day ago
And not all in IT are engineers.
[–]absentmindedjwc 21 points22 points23 points 1 day ago
Some in IT may be engineers
As I said
[–]Whamolabass 2 points3 points4 points 1 day ago
Affirmative. Particularly.
[–]mypetridish 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
So some IT may be engineers, and some engineers may be in IT?
[–]sbjf 1 point2 points3 points 20 hours ago
What bunbun22 said is a stronger statement than your first part. "Some in IT may be engineers" means "People in IT are either a real subset of engineers or not" (which actually holds no information whatsoever), while bunbun22 said "And not all in IT are engineers", which means "People in IT are NOT a real subset of engineers".
[–]compactexplore 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
And some engineers may be in IT.
[–]ProfessorPoopyPants 4 points5 points6 points 21 hours ago
That is clearly an AC power lab. Look at those oscilloscopes!
[–]_WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW -68 points-67 points-66 points 1 day ago
network engineer, kido. I'll happen to let you know that I'm not only a CCIE, but a CCAr. I've graduated top of my ph.d class in network engineering. Don't tell me I'm not an engineer you cuntflap.
[–]Arx0s 13 points14 points15 points 1 day ago
Lol network "engineer". I enjoyed your modified 4chan copypasta though.
[–]_WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW -38 points-37 points-36 points 1 day ago
that's what its fucking called you shittard.
google it
look it up in acedemic publishcations.
You're a fucking noob

Publishcations? Did you print your own diploma?

Network Engineer != Technician
[–]Jaxzoid 4 points5 points6 points 1 day ago
Where in the name of Celestia did you pull out Technician?
[–]Kazurik 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
We need more terms in here! We can not rest until we have insulted everyone!
[–]NegativeK 3 points4 points5 points 1 day ago
I'm in IT, but I'm not an engineer. Different sets (with overlap.)
[–]meatpuppet79 2 points3 points4 points 18 hours ago
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.
[–]hnrqoliv182 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago

[–]Grant638 73 points74 points75 points 1 day ago
You're a big fat phony.
This is a repost, so you didn't go anywhere.
Your title makes no sense. Engineers and IT are two completely different things.
[–]hayden_evans 15 points16 points17 points 1 day ago
Ugh I hate it when people equate engineers to IT. It's an insult!
[–]Tier4 13 points14 points15 points 23 hours ago

[–]Ntopper 29 points30 points31 points 1 day ago
I can't seem to find the science part of that facebook group. Is there a mistake?
[–]gigitrix 23 points24 points25 points 1 day ago
Nope

He's still going strong and even makes videos that troll (as in, the original definition of trolling, not the beaten-to-death one of today) people who don't know it's mostly satire. Seeing and hearing him is immensely funny.
Also, he's a redditor. Though I guess that's not a very special title to claim anymore.
[–]plazmatyk -1 points0 points1 point 10 hours ago
But I'm a redditor and I like to think I'm special...

There's this one place that sells little cups of juice, and if you hold them out to the engineers they will fly over and land on you, and drink the juice out of the little cups you're holding.
