I think it was:

Sometimes you have to get up really high to see how small you are.

[–]itspronouncedderek 114 points115 points ago

Yeah, the 'up' was in there. Making it less of a stonerism.

[–]universal_plague 14 points15 points ago

I want to believe.

But seriously, he should have thought of something more legendary... Like, "hey the cars look like matchbox, lol"

[–]Acolyte666 31 points32 points ago

Or "Hitler did nothing wrong"

[–]sspavvess 0 points1 point ago

''Justin Bieber is my biggest inspiration.''

[–]Acolyte666 -1 points0 points ago

"Parents are always wrong and hold you back."

[–]sspavvess -1 points0 points ago

''I dare you God, give me a push.''

[–]linkindude 0 points1 point ago

"Grab a jacket, Roland"

[–]verticaljeff 7 points8 points ago

Yep. Idiots deliberately misquoting for the lulz. You know that this misquote will be what everyone "remembers".

Assholes.

[–]Snookerman 0 points1 point ago

Not on my watch!

[–]compactexplore -1 points0 points ago

Wake and bake?

"Jump Forrest, juuuuuuuuuump!" - Joe Kittinger.

[–]AptMoniker 28 points29 points ago

I was having such a shitty night and then I read that. Reminded me of this.

[–]Augustus_Trollus_III 3 points4 points ago

I must go, my people need me

[–]Clitoris_Thief 148 points149 points ago

My first thought when I saw this was, so that's what he said! Couldn't here a word over the livestream. But now that I can read it it is a beautiful line.

[–]sqazm 339 points340 points ago

He stole it from r/trees.

[–]Hokie200proof 130 points131 points ago

Felix at a [128K]

Dude was high as Fuck.

[–]pretzelzetzel 0 points1 point ago

New meme: [128k] guy. Says profound shit that makes complete sense.

[–]godlessatheist 13 points14 points ago

He should be the new 10 guy

[–]Mazakaki 2 points3 points ago

[128k] guy.

[–]tarheel295[S] 17 points18 points ago

hahaha that was good

[–]sqazm 106 points107 points ago

I also just discovered he was born 4/20 1969, no joke.

[–]iamarturobandini 36 points37 points ago

Also, in the press conference after the jump the time for his freefall was given as 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

[–]xVerified 26 points27 points ago

Illuminati

[–]Shyamallamadingdong 3 points4 points ago

Illuminat-high

[–]whatevers_clever 6 points7 points ago

also he was probably pretty damn high on O2

[–]karmawhoredenier 1 point2 points ago

And a few Red Bulls.

[–]abovetheignorance 5 points6 points ago

I thought they were gonna make him chug one right before jumping out of the capsule.

[–]AaronToro 4 points5 points ago

In that case, I share a birthday with him. And hitler.

[–]cyrilio 6 points7 points ago

[–]tarheel295[S] -3 points-2 points ago

oh wow haha

[–]Reddit_Is_My_Life 0 points1 point ago

HOLY SHIT. My mind is blown

[–]WhatImMike -4 points-3 points ago

Here to report. Yes he did. [7]

[–]verticaljeff 10 points11 points ago

This isn't true. Stop spreading this myth.

"Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you are" - Felix #stratos #livejump http://win.gs/stratoslive

[–]eetzatrap1300 0 points1 point ago

I was really disappointed by that. I figured he would probably have something inspirational to say before he jumped, and all I got was static and mumbling.

Least I got to enjoy the awesome salute he gave.

[–]amazingboy97 29 points30 points ago

I bet his mom's last words before he jumped were: "Felix Baumgartner, you get down from there this instant."

[–]killingjokeoneshot 8 points9 points ago

"Don't make me come up there!"

[–]amysarah 102 points103 points ago

Great quote, but I will forever be disappointed he didn't follow it with "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

[–]imaceac 70 points71 points ago

Or.... "Redbull gives you WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINGSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS"

[–]UnholyDemigod 11 points12 points ago

I actually find it surprising they didn't pay him to say that. There's no way they can't run with it in advertising though

[–]Uberche 10 points11 points ago

Probably would have been pretty bad press if he died after saying it...

[–]UnholyDemigod 11 points12 points ago

True. But I think they realise that this is an astronomical (hehe) feat of humanity, and throwing in an advertising slogan would dishonoured it

[–]davidsmeaton 4 points5 points ago

i'm sure they were happy enough with the red bull stickers plastered all over everything.

[–]colucci 6 points7 points ago

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

[–]VCUMooSiE 18 points19 points ago

I was hoping he would yell "CANNONBALL!!!"

[–]amysarah 14 points15 points ago

or "Geronimooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"

[–]McRigger 51 points52 points ago

Or "Leeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrroooooyyy Jeeeeeeennnnnnnnnkkkkkkkkkkiiiiiiiinnnnnnnssss!!!!"

[–]Th3W1ck3dW1tch 10 points11 points ago

That might have broken the internet

[–]McRigger 2 points3 points ago

Woops.....

[–]IHateHumans 8 points9 points ago

On the way down he should of said; "I'm falling, with style!"

[–]ALL_in_A_days_WORK 5 points6 points ago

I know you're getting down voted, but I really would have liked a nice Buzz Lightyear reference.

[–]IHateHumans 3 points4 points ago

Only a cold hearted bastard would down-vote a Toy Story reference.

[–]aceoftrachs 1 point2 points ago

I would like to have seen him row an imaginary canoe while he was in free fall. That gag always cracks me up.

[–]beanso 68 points69 points ago

You used the wrong image. This is from the practice run.

Today's jump

Previous jump

Very similar but you can see the difference in the chest module thingy.

[–]CNDNFighter 28 points29 points ago

For my money at least, the additional height of today's jump is very noticeable in that picture.

[–]Alsweetex 5 points6 points ago

Unless it's lens distortion?

[–]CNDNFighter 6 points7 points ago

certainly a possibility, I suppose I don't really know enough about it, just going by what i see

[–]deltarob 1 point2 points ago

it is a lens distortion, they mentioned it on the feed

[–]beanso 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, definitely, I only noticed that after making my comment though.

[–]CNDNFighter 1 point2 points ago

Ah i gotcha. Either way, both are jaw-droppingly beautiful pictures.

[–]loldudester 13 points14 points ago

And.. you know.. the cameras..

[–]beanso 11 points12 points ago

Which aren't visible in the image that OP submitted.

[–]loldudester 3 points4 points ago

This is true.

[–]ems8 18 points19 points ago

"Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you are" https://twitter.com/RedBullStratos/status/257583511307964418

"The earth is the cradle of humankind, but one cannot live in the cradle forever." -Konstantin Tsiolkovsky

[–]mddelisle 45 points46 points ago

I watched all two hours of this. Quite excellent. The only thing I disliked was hearing the commentator constantly breathe in the mic and adjusting his dentures. Otherwise, fantastic.

[–]BeatKeaper 6 points7 points ago

I was inspired to make this about four hours ago, having not seen OP's submission. It's a little bit different, and the background image was my desktop wallpaper anyways :)

So, the quote as a whole is

"I know the whole world is watching right now and I wish the world could see what I can see.

Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you really are.

I'm going home now."

[–]b_f_o 1 point2 points ago

Didn't he say "baumgartner out" right before he jumped? Thought I heard that and it was badass!

[–]BeatKeaper 0 points1 point ago

No way... are you German? I must have not had an ear for that. If you can provide proof, then I will update the post.

[–]b_f_o 1 point2 points ago

No, I thought he was speaking English...I couldn't make out a single word, but thought he said that right at the end. With the shitty transmission, I probably mistook 'im going home now' for 'baumgartner out'

[–]BeatKeaper 0 points1 point ago

I want to believe. Either way, that's still a pretty cool thing to say at parties.

[–]lemoncaxe 14 points15 points ago

Ok, I'll be the grammar nazi on this... I can't appreciate a good quote with poor execution. The commas are unnecessary and the last one should be a period.

[–]Mezzy 11 points12 points ago

"Sometimes you have to be up really high to see how small you really are. I'm going home now."

Better?

[–]lemoncaxe 6 points7 points ago

Much better! It actually makes sense.

[–]UnholyDemigod -3 points-2 points ago

The first comma is meant to relay the way he said it. There was hesitation. To do Neil's:

That's one, small, step, for a man. One... giant leap for mankind

See?

[–]lemoncaxe 4 points5 points ago

Ever read Flowers for Algernon?

[–]UnholyDemigod -1 points0 points ago

Never even heard of it

[–]lemoncaxe 7 points8 points ago

Oh, well you must! It is excellent! But it also contributed to this feeling of having a seizure whenever I read with commas misused like that.

[–]Greendrivers 21 points22 points ago

The boys over in r/trees are going to love this.

[–]ThingsHappen -5 points-4 points ago

That's really quite sad. And this is coming from a smoker of 15 years.

[–]Adventurer_Ted 2 points3 points ago

How is it sad? People enjoy seeing references by famous people doing famous things. If he had said, "Do or do not, there is no try", I doubt any Star Wars fan would say it was sad. Infact, they'd all say the opposite and appreciate the comment. Why can't you?

Besides apparently OP forgot the word "up" in there.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Greendrivers 3 points4 points ago

Yeah sure, but they don't use the Internet silly. ;)

[–]BonHary 4 points5 points ago

When it happened I only heard the last part, made me tear up.

[–]fudg3z 7 points8 points ago

Really thought the quote didn't quite hit personally but fuck it the guy accomplished an amazing feet i'm not gonna critique his wordsmanship!

[–]SpeedofSilence 16 points17 points ago

As he is Austrian it is very likely that his first language is not English, which explains some of it.

[–]Mazakaki 0 points1 point ago

What other language would he have grown up speaking?

[–]Pihlbaoge 0 points1 point ago

German? You know, the language they speak in Austria?

[–]Mazakaki 0 points1 point ago

Oh. I misread it as Australian. I'm sorry.

[–]Mazakaki -2 points-1 points ago

What else would he speak? Isn't AUS part of the Commonwealth?

[–]DORTx2 0 points1 point ago

Oh, your Austrian! Well lets go throw another "shrimp on the barbie".

[–]Whatevs4888 3 points4 points ago

*feat

[–]ledd 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure he just has a foot fetish.

[–]fudg3z 0 points1 point ago

cheers I was torn between the two

[–]FullSexWithAWoman 4 points5 points ago

This is bullshit. It was actually; FUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKK

[–]smalec 2 points3 points ago

He had 5 hours to come up with this. So surely he delivers

[–]CaptainDickbag 3 points4 points ago

He's in his 40's, so he's had a lot longer than five hours to figure out what to say.

[–]LastRedCoat 0 points1 point ago

That's one giant leap for man, one fairly significant step for mankind.

[–]Mazakaki 0 points1 point ago

A man! A man!

[–]Meh_its_Andrew 2 points3 points ago

  • Felix Baumgartner [8]

[–]mikeyb89 2 points3 points ago

I get really high and then buy those pony beer bottles and feel like a giant. But he feels small, that's cool too I guess.

[–]fotzenwasser 1 point2 points ago

That's a picture from his practice jump not the "real" one. The real one looks much more impressing

[–]RIP_Adrienne 0 points1 point ago

I can't help but think that he HAD to have some form of sex incase he died

[–]cobaltgiant -1 points0 points ago

I wonder if r/trees will pick this quote up

[–]Hokie200proof 0 points1 point ago

I swear he said "I'm really hauling ass now" when he got out of the spin.

I'm really hoping he did.

[–]creep_creepette 0 points1 point ago

That's what she said!

[–]alagusis 1 point2 points ago

The punctuation is horrendous.

[–]Hildolfr 1 point2 points ago

View from the space station would have been phenomenal. They were probably thinking, "ya think he'll do it?"

[–]DrizztInferno -1 points0 points ago

This belongs on R/trees

[–]custerb11 0 points1 point ago

Brutal punctuation

[–]Bryz_ 0 points1 point ago

"I'm going home now" should be a separate sentence.

[–]Cremblar 0 points1 point ago

Can anybody put this to facebook dimensions for me, im really struggling :(

[–]no_talent_ass_clown 0 points1 point ago

Did he have any other way down besides jumping?

[–]2D_Captain -1 points0 points ago

Wrong pix

[–]eldonte -1 points0 points ago

When I hike to the top of a mountain and I'm about to snowboard down, I think about how tiny I really am

[–]ShipyardShellShock 0 points1 point ago

This was kind of a letdown for me honestly. I don't want to be an ass, but this is probably the pinnacle achievement of this guys life and an incredible thing to watch. I was expecting him to say something more epic. You know "one small step..." kind of thing.

[–]stifffits 0 points1 point ago

Very close, but not what he said. Or at least not what he said he said. This just happened today. Imagine how much we fuck up the words people say 20 years ago, 10 years ago, 10 days ago.

[–]earthwang -1 points0 points ago

I think this belongs in /r/trees.

[–]dragonboltz 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure everyone posting this shit is paid by the Red Bull marketing department.

[–]ItscalledCannabis 0 points1 point ago

I think this should be reposted to /r/trees.

[–]Backupusername 1 point2 points ago

I saw this on /r/all and had to doublecheck it wasn't from /r/trees.

[–]ZiggityHuff 0 points1 point ago

Wonder if he said it with the comma in that spot...

[–]Cliqey 0 points1 point ago

New mascot for /r/trees

[–]roque72 0 points1 point ago

this quote would be good on the stoned guy meme

[–]Tannz0rz 0 points1 point ago

I'm beginning to think that before anything considered relatively monumental happens, they create an inspirational quote to be said upon execution of their task.

[–]aznsteviez 0 points1 point ago

Ok I've been holding this back for hours, but the grammar with the commas is annoying the crap out of me.

[–]angelaslashes 0 points1 point ago

That comma bothers me.

[–]andrewinmelbourne 0 points1 point ago

Was expecting "Jesus...fuck"

[–]smelly_discharge 0 points1 point ago

It is nice and all, but it misses the zing of "I can see my house from up here".

[–]TheSonar 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one who noticed all the grammatical errors and downvoted. Guess I'll go circlejerkby myselfmyselfmyselfmyselfmyself

[–]TheSonar 1 point2 points ago

Fack me right? Fackfackfackfackfack

[–]TheSonar 1 point2 points ago

I would slay that grammar error so hard. So hardso hardso hardso hardso hardso hardso hard

[–]SCARfaceRUSH 0 points1 point ago

I haven't found anything profound in this phrase. Nothing that would make go "true..." nods slowly

[–]TheLegitMidgit[M] 1 point2 points ago

This post has been removed because you did not include a brief snippet of the quote in the title

[–]pretzelzetzel 0 points1 point ago

Not to seem like a dick, but why is this impressive? Has he done anything to advance human knowledge, or has he simply utilized technology of others' device to push daredevilry to its limit?

[–]Tuckmo 0 points1 point ago

Thought the same thing on LSD.

[–]uhhnon 1 point2 points ago

Downvoted for grammar.

[–]kaajit -1 points0 points ago

Someone x-post this to /r/trees please.

[–]Stittastutta -5 points-4 points ago

Take that Neil Armstrong. This is how not to fuck up your lines.

[–]DirtPile 5 points6 points ago

What the fuck are you talking about?

[–]DiversityOfThoughts 4 points5 points ago

I imagine sittastutta is talking about Neils' line which was meant to be:

one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.

It seems sittastutta thinks that Neil messed it up when actually it was a blip in the transmission (bad quality) that removed the "a".

[–]DirtPile -1 points0 points ago

Exactly.

[–]imakitty 0 points1 point ago

Well that or The Silence

[–]gnovos 0 points1 point ago

when actually it was a blip in the transmission

This was an excuse by NASA not to "spoil" the momentous achievement. Neil had said in interviews that he had indeed screwed it up.

[–]Stittastutta -2 points-1 points ago

Neil admitted he fluffed the line on a couple of occasions later in life. Link above.

[–]Stittastutta -5 points-4 points ago

Today you learned Neil Armstrong fluffed his lines... http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2012/aug/25/neil-armstrong-moon

[–]DirtPile -5 points-4 points ago

lol, The Guardian. You can't be more wrong. It was a blip in the transmission, not a flub of the line.

[–]Stittastutta 0 points1 point ago

"Damn I really did it. I blew the first words on the moon, didn't I?" Neil Armstrong.

[–]verticaljeff 0 points1 point ago

Except that's NOT what he said. The "quote" is inaccurate. Listen to it again.

[–]kegman83 -3 points-2 points ago

Has someone informed /r/trees about this?

[–]gosling_el_operator -3 points-2 points ago

that nigga was high as fuck

[–]WithForte 0 points1 point ago

I would have shouted Geronimo!

[–]MoSlinky 0 points1 point ago

Great. Big. Gigantic. Huge. Balls.

[–]Audiovore -2 points-1 points ago

"Dude, are we in space, or am I just really high?" "We're not low!"

[–]The_Reddinator 0 points1 point ago

"Steel Balls Baumgartner"

[–]Zuran 0 points1 point ago

The last sentence sounds so... terminal. :|

[–]chickenmew -2 points-1 points ago

I know I'm in the minority with this thought, but I've been skydiving before at 10,000 feet. I don't see a difference in what he did to what I did, either way if something ones wrong you die. His jump just cost a whole lot more than mine.
