Reddit will beat this into the ground so fast.

[–]TheInsaneDane 378 points379 points ago

Just like everything else here on reddit.

WE ARE LEGION. FOR WE ARE MANY.

[–]ieatbutter 31 points32 points ago

How long until we see the .gif of Felix throwing out up-votes as he falls to earth?

[–]csonnich 3 points4 points ago

Yah, really. Any minute now...

Guise?

Guise???

[–]Llevel 18 points19 points ago

[–]boom_headshot1 65 points66 points ago

Good guy Felix: waits until the weekend to jump so everyone can watch

[–]all_my_rage 21 points22 points ago

It was Monday for Australians. About 3am to be exact.

I didn't get to watch :(

[–]HaydenTheFox 42 points43 points ago

Yes. Yes, yes, yes.

[–]DerpVonGroove 61 points62 points ago

[–]nickflow 12 points13 points ago

Shit! Forgot my cellphone

[–]xenoph3 3 points4 points ago

[–]Entourageman 71 points72 points ago

Much better when he shrinks until he's just a speck

[–]WildeNietzsche 88 points89 points ago

I actually wish they would have held it another second or two in order to add more eerie gravitas to the fact that he literally just disappeared in a blink by plumenting toward earth.

[–]shizzler 30 points31 points ago

eerie gravitas, i like that.

[–]viaGalactica 732 points733 points ago

[–]sk4nk 71 points72 points ago

SAIL!

[–]Baelorn 45 points46 points ago

[–]styxtraveler 14 points15 points ago

I watched the live feed from start to finish, but I managed to turn my head when he actually jumped. one moment he's crawling out, the next he's already falling. I was a bit pissed.

[–]clown_answer 8 points9 points ago

I on the other extreme, happened to come across the thread, clicked the link and as it loaded, he saluted and jumped. I was a bit pleased.

[–]KaeXIII 8 points9 points ago

I imagine the context of the salute in the frame of some alien flying by, and him waving before he jumps.

[–]AOEUD 30 points31 points ago

Salute.

A solute is something dissolved.

[–]ToeSawBagTron 490 points491 points ago

When he was spinning furiously! Holy shit that was nuts. Definitely got scared for a bit.

[–]HereIsWhere 161 points162 points ago

He was spinning and then they cut away suddenly. I thought something had happened.

[–]BigMcL4rgehuge 51 points52 points ago

As did I. Scary as shit!

[–]sikefoo 25 points26 points ago

That, plus when they would cut off the sound of his breathing..holy shit, my heart.

[–]p00pdog 267 points268 points ago

Seeing him get control was one of the most exciting things ever, though.

[–]TekNoir08 79 points80 points ago

The build up was great too. I was on the edge on my seat the whole time.

[–]flrrrn 37 points38 points ago

I almost shit myself. I can't even begin to comprehend what he must have felt like...

[–]TekNoir08 31 points32 points ago

He didn’t even hesitate either. My fingers would have been welded to those rails.

[–]Kinch_ 87 points88 points ago

He took a while to undo the oxygen tubes. That was pretty nerver racking when they told him twice to unplug them. I could feel the anxiety, mang.

[–]Moffee 20 points21 points ago

other than the initial jump- this was by far the outstanding moment. i was scared seeing him spin, then all of a sudden he gains control....needed a soundtrack because it was really a punch the air moment!!!

[–]Theboomman 25 points26 points ago

Yeah when he was spinning they switched the feed on the tv to the control room or whatever. Anyone know why they did that?

[–]Iszoli 59 points60 points ago

They said that they would cut away if something went wrong, and i'm no expert, but when he started spinning it looked like it was going to go terribly wrong.

[–]johnnytightlips2 34 points35 points ago

There was radio silence as well; beforehand you could hear him breathing, but as he was spinning it was silent. Very frightening.

[–]maffige 236 points237 points ago

part of me wanted it to go horribly wrong

[–]stiverino 129 points130 points ago

upvote for honesty

[–]PLUS_SIZED_SLUT 140 points141 points ago

downvote for sociopathy

[–]Anonazon2 45 points46 points ago

Strictly for scientific curiosity. Then we'd know how not to jump from the edge of space.

[–]conal- 12 points13 points ago

he said he almost blacked out during the freefall.. his audio cutting in and out... holy shit, i thought i was about to watch someone faint and end up seriously hurt.

[–]Grimorg 45 points46 points ago

Seriously hurt seems a bit of an understatement.

[–]AnimatedSnake 133 points134 points ago

That was pretty fucking fast!

Well done!

[–]palealepizza 55 points56 points ago

I was scared just looking at it. I'm glad there are people out there with more courage than myself.

[–]DrunkmanDoodoo 100 points101 points ago

Give me about 10 Xanax and I would do it. You might not get all those system checks from me but I would at least jump out of the thing without a care.

[–]meowcifer 35 points36 points ago

Xanax? Imodium AD for me.

[–]el__duderino 60 points61 points ago

Forgot the chute, meh.

[–]outyourblowhole 4 points5 points ago

If you didn't pass out in the time between going up in the capsule and the time you are supposed to jump.

[–]DrunkmanDoodoo 17 points18 points ago

Yeah. They would have to modify the capsule to just drop me out of the bottom or something.

[–]AnimatedSnake 19 points20 points ago

Yeah me too...

I will with the hand upon the heart say I shred a tear when he spoke, with the; Earth I'm coming down, or something along those lines, and then jumped.

It was just awesome...

[–]ZaneMasterX 40 points41 points ago

He said "Im coming home." if I recall.

[–]palealepizza 26 points27 points ago

I'd have fainted, fallen and gravity would have done the rest.

[–]AnimatedSnake 10 points11 points ago

You might have broken the speed of sound barrier then though, hehe :P

[–]Modernist1849 210 points211 points ago

Does anyone have the video?

[–]Cepheia 79 points80 points ago

So.. he didn't break the record for longest freefall?

[–]IsSuEat 103 points104 points ago

he left the longest freefall record to Joe Kittinger, the interviewer on ServusTV (redbulls own TV Chan) titled it as "typically Austrian behaviour". See interview here, in German though http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=tVZwd--HH-4#t=703s Baumgartner said "the record should be left with him (Kittinger), he held it for over 52 years"

[–]Cepheia 80 points81 points ago

[–]Paladia 191 points192 points ago

That's because he positioned himself in a diving position, with the head down and arms tightly along the body. It maximizes speed, as he was going for the fastest speed record, hoping to break the sound barrier.

If you want to go for the longest time falling, you position yourself horisontally instead with your arms stretched out.

[–]pinkcadillac28 83 points84 points ago

did he end up breaking the sound barrier?

[–]KAM1KAZ3 203 points204 points ago

Yes. Mach 1.24

[–]GeneralWarts 45 points46 points ago

Does the body feel anything when it breaks the barrier?

[–]KAM1KAZ3 99 points100 points ago

He said that he couldn't feel anything because of the pressure suit.

[–]Ag-E 38 points39 points ago

Could he hear anything?

[–]pdb01 180 points181 points ago

Even if he could hear out of the suit, he's travelling faster than any sound he creates, by definition.

[–]kixr4kids 25 points26 points ago

I don't believe so because there little to no air resistance. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

[–]Choralone 16 points17 points ago

There isn't really any such thing as a sound barrier - it's an engineering obstacle in denser atmosphere as shock fronts build up and that tends to rip stuff apart - but in thin air like this there wouldn't be much.

[–]Mechakoopa 10 points11 points ago

Was it the speed of sound at the altitude he was at at the time though? I thought above 20 km or so the change from decrease in pressure started to outpace that from the drop in temperature. I'm on my phone right now though and not sure how high he jumped from.

[–]deadpansnarker 29 points30 points ago

Preliminary reports have him at 833 mph (mach 1.24)

[–]GodRa 16 points17 points ago

Sound barrier changes with the atmospheric pressure.

[–]scottyd23 14 points15 points ago

The speed of sound is less at higher altitudes. Here is a nice graph showing how it changes as you gain altitude.

[–]skeletor100 174 points175 points ago

That wasn't it. He pulled his chute early. He wasn't supposed to pull it for another minute but he wasn't comfortable. You could hear him talking to Kittinger over the radio about how his visor was fogged up and he couldn't see. It seems like he freaked out a bit and pulled early as a precaution.

[–]mattzm 222 points223 points ago

I think if anyone is justified in being a bit freaked out, it's this guy. I can feel my balls retreating inside my body just watching the GIFs

[–]spacedicksmakestears 22 points23 points ago

I felt my balls retreating inside my body when he stepped off that teeny platform. Then I remembered I'm a girl.

[–]mattzm 30 points31 points ago

Anatomically this suggests your ovaries are cowering behind your lungs at this point.

[–]spacedicksmakestears 17 points18 points ago

I can accept that.

[–]brsfan519 26 points27 points ago

I think you're right. He was only able to hit the high speeds at the very early portion of his freefall due to low air resistance. And at that point, his body position didn't make a difference since it was essentially a vacuum.

[–]OneCrookedVulture 12 points13 points ago

During the press conference he said he only pulled 200 feet early.

[–]el__duderino 67 points68 points ago

False. The reason he fell so fast was because of his giant balls.

[–]ricodued 68 points69 points ago

False. Acceleration due to gravity is uniform regardless of mass. If anything, they would have slowed him down

[–]GodRa 56 points57 points ago

False. Acceleration due to gravity is uniform regardless of mass in a vacuum.

[–]jcbkmk13 8 points9 points ago

This problem takes place in the real world - not in a vacuum. Here the force of air resistance is probably very similar to quadratic drag. Hence, if he had heavier balls he would fall quicker as the force of drag would be working against his weight. Heavier things fall faster in the real world because drag affects them less - think about the concept of inertia.

You can see the effects of drag by looking at the velocity in the video. At first it increases rapidly but as the jumper's velocity increases the force of drag increases since it is proportional to the square of the velocity in the quadratic term. As one would expect the velocity increases at a slower and slower rate the faster the jumper moves - this is reflected in the video. In a vacuum, If you make the assumption that the force of gravity is nearly constant throughout his whole jump, you would expect the velocity to increase at a constant rate - which it doesn't.

[–]too_many_legs 36 points37 points ago

He was going about 100 mph faster than the longest freefall. So even though he fell further, he was going fast enough, and was aero enough that he had to pull his chute in less time.

[–]numb99 12 points13 points ago

no, Joe Kittinger still holds it. Baumgartner broke the highest fall record, though

[–]BeatKeaper 47 points48 points ago

A tribute to Felix Baumgartner

edit: Damn.. I know I don't lurk Reddit enough when the same thing in black font was submitted four hours earlier and is on the front page. Sorry everyone! I did make this by myself though, so no, I am not going to feel bad.

thank you

[–]kaajit 29 points30 points ago

I really wish that commentator would shut up.

[–]canDANIan 4 points5 points ago

Did they not have a camera on his helmet or anything? Because that would be a really interesting perspective to see. At least when he's in the controlled descent; when he's spinning in the freefall it would get really disorienting.

[–]biyabo 63 points64 points ago

That 7th one.

My throne atop the world.

[–]slow6i 13 points14 points ago

Dat 4th one. Beautiful.

[–]nimr0d 23 points24 points ago

I hope they have some high res pictures to release: http://i.imgur.com/Vhqnz.png this would make an awesome wallpaper without the stats at the top, and a more detailed view of the earth.

No he didn't, #20.

[–]El_Rey_de_Reyes 7 points8 points ago

This was so awesome.

What a weird species we are.

[–]millej 74 points75 points ago

If I can't do this in Just Cause 3, I'll be thoroughly disappointed.

[–]Magic_is_the_answer 155 points156 points ago

He is far more handsome than I expected. He'll be swimming in boobage.

Edit: Spelling

[–]toomuchtodotoday 296 points297 points ago

Free falling into a world of pussy, as it were.

[–]Magic_is_the_answer 18 points19 points ago

He's got the huge balls to go with it.

[–]pred 55 points56 points ago

He should be already. This is the guy who skydived to the top of a tower in Malmö, jumped down from that as well, before fleeing from the country in a speedboat.

[–]drewsus 169 points170 points ago

Funny how this gives me a strong feeling of vertigo, but the proper one does not.

[–]Snookerman 237 points238 points ago

Probably because in the original, you see him fall, but in the reverse, it looks like you're falling towards him.

[–]drewsus 166 points167 points ago

I shall ponder this.

[–]rainman18 43 points44 points ago

And then I shall meet with the High Council.

[–]DeliriumSC 16 points17 points ago

Same here. Kind of weirded me out and made my legs feel numb watching it backwards, yet forwards it didn't phase me.

[–]acrowsmurder 45 points46 points ago

It's not jumping, it's falling with style.

[–]FuBaR1218 22 points23 points ago

Does anyone know what he said before he took the leap?

Something about not realizing how small you are until you are way up high or something?

It was tough to hear what exactly he was saying.

[–]MathrixD 105 points106 points ago

I know the whole world is watching right now. I wish you could see what I can see. Sometimes you have to be up really high to realize how small you are. I'm going home now.

[–]Cminor7 13 points14 points ago

Holy shit. That is epic. Time to do something with my life I guess.

[–]sammwwise 108 points109 points ago

[–]Rhetorical_Answers 21 points22 points ago

He didn't really jump, but white men can jump

[–]hayashirice911 2 points3 points ago

Too bad we no longer have any more manned space programs in America :(

[–]TijuanaTacoMonster 50 points51 points ago

It's like he's zooming in on Google Earth

[–]xaoq 85 points86 points ago

Nice try, people-who-claim-Earth-isn't-flat

[–]spider2Ybanana 17 points18 points ago

What part of the Earth is he actually falling toward? There seems to be a group of islands in the center.

[–]Babahoyo 15 points16 points ago

idk what those "islands" are. he's over new mexico/texas

[–]UselessWidget 33 points34 points ago

At such a height, what would happen if he pulled his helmet off just standing there?

[–]samantha42 100 points101 points ago

Death...it's near-vacuum at that altitude.

[–]dickseverywhere444 31 points32 points ago

He'd suffocate. Probably become frostbitten as well, but suffocation would kill him first.

edit I feel suffocate is the wrong word..

[–]LowerThoseEyebrows 44 points45 points ago

asphyxiate?

[–]tachyon534 37 points38 points ago

The fluid would evaporate from his eyes and mouth, his face would swell and he would asphyxiate.

[–]empire_strikes_back 9 points10 points ago

Didn't they say all the liquid in his body would boil?

[–]PhilGuitar 16 points17 points ago

I wanted to know what the red button was for.

[–]Deradius 33 points34 points ago

Some guy in Prague is wondering why his lights are turning on and off.

[–]billypowergamer 18 points19 points ago

From watching them go through the checklist when it was happening, I think the button was to activate the cameras on his suit. I could be wrong though.

New greatest way to commit suicide, if you can afford it.

[–]torokunai 40 points41 points ago

too much time to change your mind -- if you ask me

[–]JoshwaarBee 27 points28 points ago

Take a parachute in case you do.

[–]SirZoidberg 10 points11 points ago

So then you live the last few moments of your life with some small regret. No bid deal.

[–]never_mind_sir 146 points147 points ago

[–]dan2737 16 points17 points ago

Well thanks for making that gif, I love it.

[–]Obalanserad 41 points42 points ago

This is the anti-gif of "I don't want to live on this planet anymore"

He basically was away from earth, and dived right back.

[–]Godloseslaw 36 points37 points ago

Apparently, Red Bull does not give you wings.

[–]brendanmccue 38 points39 points ago

"Red Bull gives you a balloon and a parachute" just isn't as catchy

[–]martinzky 20 points21 points ago

I wish more of the world's resources went to fund shit like this.

[–]rickyrockwell 19 points20 points ago

Watching this part of the free fall was the craziest part

[–]SprechenSieDich 24 points25 points ago

The part where he spun like a madman was pretty intense too.

[–]Vuchetich 11 points12 points ago

Watching this live, i was fucking amazed at how fast he accelerated!

[–]AiKantSpel 30 points31 points ago

If he was the only guy in the capsule, then who was holding the camera? Nice try hollywood.

[–]reddell 14 points15 points ago

Where's the video?

[–]gokukillnaruto 30 points31 points ago

did he land in a glass of water?

[–]mister_universe 15 points16 points ago

How do you guys upload gifs this quickly?!

[–]MrMilkshakes 72 points73 points ago

They took a quick break from masturbating

[–]enzo32ferrari 23 points24 points ago

Hi, my name is Felix Baumgartner,

and this is Jackass

[–]Breial 9 points10 points ago

Highest freefall achievement unlocked!

[–]Xoebe 42 points43 points ago

Damn, how many people were jumping out of that thing? I didn't have time to watch all of them.

[–]Sleep45 28 points29 points ago

Will someone explain to me without being a dick why doing this would be hard? I imaging its just falling and using a parachute.

[–]marvin 74 points75 points ago

Okay.

(1) He is actually skydiving, which requires a set of skills in itself.

(2) He's wearing a spacesuit, which makes all physical movements, including the art of flying and landing parachute, much more cumbersome. A spacesuit limits your movements much more than its bulk would imply, since the pressure differences add to the forces required to move a limb, for instance.

(3) The first part of the ascent has a single point of failure. If anything had gone wrong with the balloon or gondola connection, Baumgartner would be guaranteed to crash with no opportunity to bail out. Also, there is no turning back once the gondola leaves the ground. Baumgartner is committed to jump, no matter what happens. There is no "quit game" option.

(4) The spacesuit has a life-support system, which must be maintained. This is why the team has so many checklists. The greatly varying temperatures throughout the atmosphere create complications, such as for instance the potential for fog on the visor, which would cause disorientation and maybe loss of control, including spinning so fast you lose consciousness and die, either because the parachute gets deployed incorrectly/tangled, or because the centripetal forces kill you. This is a problem regularly faced by high-altitude skydivers, including special forces soldiers. Any equipment malfunction can be deadly.

(5) There are no visual references with regards to the speed during freefall, and the thin atmosphere makes attitude control at low speeds impossible. This adds to the risk of losing control and just tumbling wildly until the centripetal forces make you lose consciousness.

(6) No one has ever broken the sound barrier outside an aircraft before. Although this has been simulated, there was a risk that the supersonic shockwave would adversely affect Baumgartner's aerodynamic control and either damage his spacesuit (causing pressure loss, loss of consiousness and death) or send him into an uncontrollable tumble.

So....yeah.

[–]GoHomeGapers 22 points23 points ago

Not exactly

3 - If any of his systems fail, he can ride the gondola back to the ground via its parachute. He is not committed to jumping.

6 - Fighter pilots have exceeded the sound barrier outside of their aircraft during ejections, but this is the first time it has been done on purpose.

[–]Rarehero 19 points20 points ago

Re-entry into denser parts of the atmosphere can kill you. They had an automatic drop chute, that would have avoided the worst, but who knows; a few Gs too many and the blood in your head might kill you. Saying that this was just "a jump with parachute" is a bit like saying, that Chuck Yeager's first supersonic flight was just "a flight with a plane". And that speeds little failures could lead to a catastrophe.

All it needs is an "abandon thread" caption.

What is the force of gravity at that altitude?

[–]malefic_puppy 24 points25 points ago

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=gravity+37+km+above+earth+surface

For the lazy; 9.69 m/s2

Definitly not much of a difference

[–]X_Sync 13 points14 points ago

Even at 400Km (around the altitude of the ISS) it's close to normal, 8.68. But they are orbiting the Earth, not just standing in a spot so that's why they don't fall out of the sky/space.

[–]hopperface 38 points39 points ago

Or more (less) precisely, they are in freefall over the earth except they're moving so fast sideways that they keep missing the ground

[–]XZenogear 28 points29 points ago

that's how you fly isnt it? Throwing yourself to the ground and missing.

[–]RobinBennett 6 points7 points ago

37Km sounds high, but it's not much compared to the radius of the earth, so gravity is virtually the same.

Just watching this makes me feel ill. So much respect for Felix!

An insane jump. It made my heart skip.
