They always gave me the fear. And still do.

Incidentally, bet they'd love this in /r/Moviesinthemaking

[–]jerrbearr 12 points13 points ago

Didn't know there was a sub like that, thank you so much!

[–]crampedstyl 5 points6 points ago

Little tidbit, in the books they aren't evil. They were forced to obey the witch and give her three wishes because she possessed a crown that bestowed that gift to whoever had it. Later they actually aid Dorothy and the gang.

[–]parcivale 3 points4 points ago

Well in the movie they did cheer when Dorothy killed her with that bucket of water. So it was clear at that point that the Witch had some power over them that was broken when she died.

[–]crampedstyl 1 point2 points ago

Ah yes you're right. I've been reading the books, forgot about that part of the movie.

[–]parcivale 3 points4 points ago

I understand there are something like a dozen of Baum's Oz books. And some of the later ones they aren't sure whether he wrote them or if some woman hired by the publisher ghost-wrote them for him.

[–]crampedstyl 2 points3 points ago

[–]mirth23 0 points1 point ago

Fourteen. Ruth Plumly Thompson was hired to continue the Oz series after Baum died and her books were attributed to her from the start. There's also been a couple later Oz book authors who also write under their own names.

[–]ellieD 6 points7 points ago

I have to agree, when I was a child, the flying monkeys scared the crap out of me in OZ. Even more than the witch!

[–]Xanthan81 2 points3 points ago

Really? Cause the shankings are what scared me!

;)

[–]elliosenor 0 points1 point ago

They sure are a lot less scary when they're just kinda standin' there like that.

[–]slugmaniac 46 points47 points ago

Is seth green's face based off this?

[–]Floor_Pepper 21 points22 points ago

I was thinking more along the lines of Ron Perlman

[–]OkRememberJosh 10 points11 points ago

I was thing Tom Waits...

[–]basrooting 8 points9 points ago

Incidentally, his voice was the inspiration for Heath Ledger's voice when he played The Joker.

Here is Tom Waits Here is Heath Ledger

[–]MOFUNKY 2 points3 points ago

That just blew my fucking mind

[–]vegandread 0 points1 point ago

Wow. I forget how amazing Ledger was in that role. I need to see that movie again, stat.

[–]Niam_Leesom 1 point2 points ago

Inspiration? more like direct copy.

[–]NeverTrustaMonkey 0 points1 point ago

EDIT:Got the wrong 'Sons of Anarchy' guy.

[–]BWLGeorge 8 points9 points ago

"Kill me..."

[–]yodaddadadda 3 points4 points ago

My three year old daughter really got into the Wizartd of Oz this summer, and to prevent her from freaking out during the winged monkey part, I would always say something like "Those silly monkeys!" and she would reply with a laugh and say "Yeah. Silly monkeys!" But now that's her favorite part and whenever anybody asks her about the Wizard of Oz, she tells them that she likes the winged monkeys and she always gets the craziest looks in return.

[–]electriophile 6 points7 points ago

[–]bebop-a-lula 2 points3 points ago

I'm getting more of a tom waits vibe

[–]bryanf445 1 point2 points ago

I searched for tom waits in this thread...Thank you.

[–]half_entente 1 point2 points ago

How did I miss the tiny hats they wore?

[–]weepingmeadow 1 point2 points ago

[–]ShipsPonys 1 point2 points ago

he looks like seth green.

[–]k3vk3vk3vin 1 point2 points ago

So is that the big bird-like creature you can see in the background at one point in the movie?

[–]iateyourbees 3 points4 points ago

IIRC, that was a crane. You can see it in the background earlier in the scene where the witch is throwing fireballs at the scarecrow.

[–]dee_007 1 point2 points ago

These things gave me nightmares!

[–]cerebralshrike 0 points1 point ago

They still creep the living crap out of me. Get away!

[–]Inugami 0 points1 point ago

After 20 years of fighting young heretics and killers!

[–]FoxBattalion79 0 points1 point ago

I thought that read "costume contest" and I clicked on it and I was like woah I bet that was the guy that won.

[–]ans84 1 point2 points ago

I was in a high school version of this circa 2000, and the flying monkeys rode around in roller blades. One of them threatened to drop kick my yorkie named Toto -- who played Toto -- into the mezzanine. I was terrified of the monkeys as a child, and that just solidified my terror.

[–]Apollonius_Cone 1 point2 points ago

"Fly you fools!"

"I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too!"

[–]adolfojacosta 1 point2 points ago

Aaaaand now I won't be sleeping tonight.

[–]GAMERBOB93 0 points1 point ago

poor Sid

[–]Mitochondria420 1 point2 points ago

Oy.

[–]Rocheasaurus 1 point2 points ago

and now my nightmares are complete

[–]coach_styles 0 points1 point ago

I think the general consensus here is, fuck those monkeys.

[–]Darkening 0 points1 point ago

And when they get off work, they go to their gig at Radio City.

[–]Forever_Awkward 0 points1 point ago

George Bush is such an angel!

[–]TheWarpedOne 0 points1 point ago

Chrisopher Lloyd is amazing!

[–]fourvalleys 1 point2 points ago

Looks like the best Sufjan Stevens concert ever.

[–]insideoutduck 1 point2 points ago

I don't know who that is but he looks completely awesome.

[–]fourvalleys 1 point2 points ago

Folk musician.

I like him, but if you like that style of music, you would already know who he is!

[–]insideoutduck 1 point2 points ago

Okay, well I've never really listened to much folk music but I'll give him a listen :)

[–]fourvalleys 2 points3 points ago

Old stuff first. The new stuff is electronic (and still fantastic...) but the old stuff, like the Illinois album, is phenomenal.

[–]insideoutduck 1 point2 points ago

Okay, will do, thanks :)

[–]JTyler82 -1 points0 points ago

Today on Jack ass

[–]Daveyg1two3 1 point2 points ago

He looks like TomWaits!

[–]KingToasty 0 points1 point ago

[–]floydbarber253 0 points1 point ago

Lol they underlined win.

[–]c53x12 1 point2 points ago

Still one of the creepiest fuckin' things ever put on film.

[–]metalgod 0 points1 point ago

Return To Oz: Wheelers.

[–]completelydiff 0 points1 point ago

Can one purchase a replica flying monkey anywhere online?

I have tried unsuccessfully a few times, and any suggestions would be welcome.

When I was a kid, biulding Frankenstein's Monster, the Werewolf and Dracula from model kits was almost required. A flying monkey has never to my knowledge been available, and I still want one, ether a model kit or a premade item.

[–]schmose 1 point2 points ago

Fezzes are cool.

[–]ozpunk 0 points1 point ago

[–]lightzout 0 points1 point ago

Scariest moment of my childhood!

[–]mr_nuggets 0 points1 point ago

Had nightmares about the flying monkeys...or more accurately, I was afraid to fall asleep.

[–]exwhale 0 points1 point ago

So many nightmares... shudder

[–]balancedchaos 0 points1 point ago

Well, I have my nightmare for tonight. Thanks.

[–]lawless6776 0 points1 point ago

The costume for the monkeys is a west point Cadet uniform (circa whatever). Because West Point would not let part of the movie to be shot at west point.

[–]GrandmaTITMilk 0 points1 point ago

I have and always will hate those fuckers. I was scared shitless as a kid because of them. Gave me nightmares for years

[–]ToadLickr 1 point2 points ago

Joseph Kittinger's Ikarus Mark II jumping gear.

[–]Piscator629 0 points1 point ago

I appreciate that if no one else does.

[–]dwohio 0 points1 point ago

It looks like a fuzzy George W. Bush.

[–]RonWisely 1 point2 points ago

This was my Halloween costume a couple years ago.

[–]VoluptuousOrange 0 points1 point ago

Elphaba + Chistrey = <3

[–]T_Dumbsford 0 points1 point ago

Hey OP, thanks for a great post that doesn't reference a movie from the past five years. Good stuff.

[–]b33r33b 0 points1 point ago

This movie was ahead of it's time. Love.

[–]teh_man01 0 points1 point ago

We had to watch this movie for language arts in school a couple weeks ago.

[–]p0enut 0 points1 point ago

The flying monkeys always creeped me out. That movie was WAY ahead of its time in terms of makeup/effects/cinematography. A true classic....but...yeah..the monkeys? scary as shit.

[–]applegrumble 0 points1 point ago

ON OF THE SCARIEST THINGS OF ALL TIME. AAARGH.

[–]A_Midsummer_Poop 0 points1 point ago

So, that's what a nightmare looks like.

[–]harbingeralpha 0 points1 point ago

Horrifying and fantastic.

[–]audiofreque 0 points1 point ago

absolutely the scariest thing ever.

[–]bitwise97 0 points1 point ago

These things gave me nightmares when I was kid. I would say their test was a success.

[–]DonaldRaper 0 points1 point ago

LARGE WIN

[–]YoSoyElDiablo 1 point2 points ago

Was briefly considered by Felix Baumgartner for his jump.

[–]superanth 0 points1 point ago

When does he make his jump from 24 miles into space?

[–]fishforbrains 0 points1 point ago

Just me or a strong resemblance to Bush?

[–]EvilGeniusCartier 0 points1 point ago

Wow, Jerry Stiller has been in the business a long time.

[–]ZXMFYU 0 points1 point ago

Those things scared the hell out of me when I was little.

[–]fulham 0 points1 point ago

Best. Movie. Ever.

[–]ermahgerditsAMY 0 points1 point ago

This movie is positively wonderful. There's an entire book regarding the making of the movie with the original costume tests for all the major characters, as well as other actors who were considered along the way.

There was a huge possibility that Dorothy would be played by Shirley Temple.

[–]Paraptorkeet 0 points1 point ago

I've always thought the winged monkeys looked a bit like Tom Waits

[–]LordLeRoy 0 points1 point ago

Interesting story. When I was a child and my mom and I would go to the store (a local Meijer for anyone who is around the great lakes region), she would point out this man that worked there that was extremely old and rather short and she always told me that he was one of the monkeys in The Wizard of Oz. Well I just got around around to doing my research and his name is Danny Windsor. It always made me excited when she would point him out to me. I don't think he still works there though. I haven't seen him in many years. Source http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_anyone_who_acted_in_the_Wizard_of_Oz_movie_still_alive

[–]Piscator629 0 points1 point ago

I have known the lead monkey for years . He was a good friend of my mothers. He worked as a door greeter at a local Miejers supermarket (basically a walmart) for years. He was only 16-17 when he worked on Oz. he did say that those people knew how to party and he hung out with Mickey Rooney and Judy Gardner for years after the film.

edit He was also fabulously Gay.

[–]eldonte 0 points1 point ago

Ridiculous Halloween costume

[–]BigHurt0313 0 points1 point ago

Ben Stiller?

[–]Deconstruction_Z 0 points1 point ago

It's Wes Borland

[–]piclemaniscool 1 point2 points ago

TIL many people have a fear of the winged monkeys. And here I thought it was just my uncle.

[–]SheWasAHurricane 0 points1 point ago

I don't know about any of you, but I just clicked back and forth between this link a few times, just to fully grasp how hilarious he looks in that costume.

[–]zerg886 0 points1 point ago

Grandpa?

[–]skonen_blades 0 points1 point ago

Man the guy in that costume gives no fucks. Look at him. He's just like "Yeah? So?"

[–]hummingbird910 0 points1 point ago

Mom would come running when the flying monkeys came on because we all started screaming.

[–]another_old_fart 0 points1 point ago

Those are the LARGE wings? Wow.

[–]bondinferno -1 points0 points ago

I just pooed a little

[–]section111 0 points1 point ago

People in this thread have said Seth Green, Ben Stiller, but I submit this looks like the incomparable Jason Flemyng.
