Video. Gotta love Granderson's reaction.

[–]youenjoymyself 38 points39 points ago

Meanwhile, the pitcher gave zero fucks as he walked to the dugout.

[–]FerriteLoL 42 points43 points ago

As a former pitcher I think his life just flashed before his eyes. That was real close to being really nasty.

[–]Tarblz 9 points10 points ago

I have to wonder, if that ball hits the pitcher, is it going fast enough to kill/maim?

[–]FerriteLoL 21 points22 points ago

In high school my buddy got hit in the mouth and was out the rest of the season. Every pitcher has seen somebody get hit once I think, and he was always a little afraid when he was on the mound the next year. When I see this pitcher walk off the mound like he doesn't give a fuck I like to think he's thinking, "Holy shit nice reflexes me."

[–]Dez_Moines 13 points14 points ago

As a former pitcher (AAU), getting back on the mound after taking a hit is pretty scary. After taking one to the forehead I flinched every time someone swung at a pitch for a year or two after. Getting hit in the chest years later kept me from pitching again.

[–]backmask 1 point2 points ago

Agreed. I took a line drive in the neck (throat) in high school once. I was pretty sure I was going to die.

[–]da1hobo 4 points5 points ago

I don't know about baseball but when my sis played softball in high school one of her friends on the team was the daughter of the coach. He was giving her a hard time on her batting and yelling at her to put her hips into it. She did.

I couldn't even follow the ball with my eye when it came off the bat and nailed her dad in the face and shattered his jaw. He eats through a straw now.

[–]AliasHandler 1 point2 points ago

That'll give you some daddy issues.

[–]LanguiDude 2 points3 points ago

That'll give your daddy some issues.

[–]sexybassman 2 points3 points ago

One thing I can say for sure is it will hurt like a bitch.

[–]carbajan 2 points3 points ago

If you consider fracturing a vertebra a form of maiming, then yes.

[–]Mitz510 1 point2 points ago

I'm on my iPod so I can't link you but last month Oakland A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy was hit in the head by a line drive and he had to go to the hospital and get surgery.

[–]Meanest_Phlebotomist 1 point2 points ago

Yes. A pitcher this season suffered a fractured skull, and a few years ago a coach was killed.

[–]danester1 2 points3 points ago

It's entirely possible. It's actually why they decided to regulate the bats again. Now all bats have to meet a BBCOR (Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution) standard which means the bats may only be made out of certain materials. This limits the exit velocity of the ball off of the bat in an attempt to remove some of the major risks associated with playing in the infield.

[–]jmblur 1 point2 points ago

This was actually prompted more by Commotio Cordis (heard fibrillation after being hit in the chest) than anything else. Of course, recent research has shown that a ball batted as slow as 35-40mph is actually MOST likely to cause Commotio Cordis... so while it gives more reaction time, being hit can still cause death.

[–]danester1 0 points1 point ago

You're completely right. It does follow that your more likely to be hit in the chest. There was a kid who lived a few neighborhoods away from me who died from being hit in the chest. When he was hit, the ball struck so in time with his heartbeat that Commotio Cordis came into effect and it was over.

[–]jmblur 0 points1 point ago

yep, there's about a 20ms window per heartbeat where CC can occur with a direct hit to the precordium. Without a pretty quick defibrillation, there's very little hope of survival. Nasty stuff.

Worked with a university trying to get a laboratory test set up to test chest protectors (my company's chest protectors worked best in initial testing, which was very gratifying!) so we could improve our product further, but with all the fuss around concussions in football the big test/standards agencies all focused on that.

[–]SuperGroverMonster 0 points1 point ago

I actually grew up in a small town where a first baseman on our high school team took a line drive to the head that killed him. After that the team switched to wooden bats and would only play with teams that would do the same, as well as putting helmets on the pitcher and infield. I believe they were actually banned from tournaments for a year or two for refusing to use the metal bats.

With a perfect hit it goes a LOT faster. No one can come close to throwing it out of a park.

[–]YesIamaWizard 1 point2 points ago

I understand your logic. But several players can throw it 330 feet.

[–]Penglishman 2 points3 points ago

with the vertical take-off too? i remember a baseball guy coming to the cricket club and destroying everyone for arm without trying, but surely the combined energy off the bat is higher?

[–]Veothrosh 2 points3 points ago

It is much higher if you calculate in the leverage you get from the bat

[–]acoustic_wave 0 points1 point ago

You really have to, don't you?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Elgar17 1 point2 points ago

So you mean a perfect bunt?

[–]JackOneill 0 points1 point ago

[–]7FoldSamurai 0 points1 point ago

baseballs are soft, try a cricket ball on for size

[–]Mike_McDeee 2 points3 points ago

As another former pitcher, your reflexes will always protect your face and your nuts.

[–]danester1 0 points1 point ago

As a former catcher who watched his ace's hat get knocked off by a line drive, it's terrifying. My friend was lucky because I told him to wear his hat right instead of flatbilling it. He straightened it out and next pitch is launched back at him, hits the brim and then his head. Scary shit man.

[–]Inkwild 5 points6 points ago

Love the crowds reaction.

[–]hybris12 5 points6 points ago

Hes just like "I ain't even mad"

[–]palealepizza 187 points188 points ago

can't be recent; that's Toronto and this is mid-October.

[–]rustyarrowhead 24 points25 points ago

September 28th, vs. the Yankees....and yes it was a repost.

[–]palealepizza 37 points38 points ago

reposts don't bother me, I was just making a joke.

[–]JayTrain 15 points16 points ago

I got it, and it made me sad.

[–]e8ghtmileshigh -2 points-1 points ago

Yea it is. This was in September. And this is a repost.

[–]naquin69 27 points28 points ago

Would that still be out?

[–]anonymouscuzican 39 points40 points ago

Yes because the glove was in his hand when the ball hit it, and the ball forced the glove off his hand, then he caught the glove, making it a catch.

On the other hand, if a player throws their glove or hat at the ball and it makes contact, it's actually in the rules that the batter is awarded 3 bases. Guess the only good time to do that is if the ball is going over the fence.

[–]djm1st 9 points10 points ago

Wasn't there a debate over this at one point? Or was that in a movie...?

[–]NoNeedForAName 1 point2 points ago

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine that it had to have been debated at some point. Presumably the rule is in place to benefit the batter and punish the fielder. That considered, it doesn't make sense to allow the fielder to use the rule to his advantage.

[–]Im_At_Work_Damnit 7 points8 points ago

It's not an exploit... it's a clever use of game mechanics.

[–]NoNeedForAName 0 points1 point ago

I just can't think of any rationale for the current rule that wouldn't be furthered by modifying it to prevent throwing gloves to stop home runs, or that wouldn't be hindered by allowing them to throw gloves to stop home runs.

[–]SCMurgatroid 3 points4 points ago

I posted above that if someone tries to prevent a home run by throwing their glove or hat, the umpire may award the batter 4 bases (a home run, anyways.) There's also the chance that the ball carries the glove over the fence, and some lucky fan gets a ball and your glove.

[–]NorthernBoreus 0 points1 point ago

There wasn't a debate about it, but in the Little Rascals movie one of the kids throws his hat up to catch a ball.

[–]ModestlyMassive 4 points5 points ago

If it's going over the fence, the batter is awarded 4 bases. Umpire's discretion on the call.

[–]seagramsextradrygin 2 points3 points ago

So why doesn't anyone ever try it on a home run?

[–]oneyeartrip 5 points6 points ago

because they don't wanna be nailed next time they're at bat. There are lots of unwritten rules to ensure people don't act outside of sportsmanship.

[–]Meglomaniac 1 point2 points ago

I would imagine that the rule is in place not for home runs, but for throwing the ball at hits through the infield. Throw the glove at a ball and then try to go for a double play. Same reason there is the infield fly ball rule.

[–]SCMurgatroid 2 points3 points ago

Guess the only good time to do that is if the ball is going over the fence.

If, in the Umpire's judgement, it would have been a Home Run without the interference, the batter is awarded 4 bases.

[–]sobe86 4 points5 points ago

I hope it would be... If he dropped the glove, but the ball stayed in there, would that still be out?

[–]swth 0 points1 point ago

no, you can play without a glove. if you dont have the glove, you dont catch the ball

[–]Jojii 0 points1 point ago

No, the glove is just an extension of the body while it is attached to you.

[–]sobe86 0 points1 point ago

I don't claim to know the rules of baseball but from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch_(baseball)

A catch is legal if the ball is finally held by any fielder before it touches the ground.

So if he dropped the glove but then picked it up again without the ball touching the ground, that would be fine no?

[–]Jojii 6 points7 points ago

If the glove is no longer under control and it hits the ground with the ball then the ball is no longer under control and considered on the ground. The glove at that point is no different from grass or a base.

[–]loldudester -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, so if the glove hit the ground, it wouldn't be out. But if he catches the glove with the ball in it before it hits the ground, it would.

[–]Jojii -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, so if the glove hit the ground, it wouldn't be out.

It would be out unless the glove is under the control of the fielder.

[–]justapunkrocksong 0 points1 point ago

I can't find the video but what about the catch where it rolled off of one player's foot up into the air and another player caught it. They ruled it wasn't a catch.

[–]MJKauz 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Yes it would be. He caught the ball...

[–]Runding 34 points35 points ago

I don't really care for baseball but...

holy shit that was awesome.

[–]hbombto 2 points3 points ago

Silly. It's hockey season! Oh wait....

[–]wooden_spoon 1 point2 points ago

I suppose pitchers have to be pretty swift to avoid being hit by the ball, but that guy was fucking quick. That ball would have been 100 feet away from me before I realized where it even went.

[–]fullmount 1 point2 points ago

The only positive thing to happen to our team all season. Fuck.

OH SHIT ITS COMING RIGHT AT ME GOTTA CATCH IT AHHHHH GLOVE WTF AHHH, wait its cool, I got it everyone

[–]Bonjoy23 1 point2 points ago

The blonde chick in the background was casting a spell on the glove while it was happening.

[–]supernatendo 0 points1 point ago

She really gets into the whole hand-expression thing.

[–]Bonjoy23 0 points1 point ago

she was probably saying "fus ro dah!"

[–]YesIamaWizard 0 points1 point ago

I have seen that before. What was the ruling on the field? To me that is a ground rule double.

[–]DanielGayLewis 0 points1 point ago

This is sadly the best thing that has happened to the Blue Jays since 1993.

[–]Evref 0 points1 point ago

hah, clicked on this right as Granderson came up to bat right now.

[–]Stonewall-Simpson 0 points1 point ago

I think I watched that all of 50 times.

[–]MagicHobbes 0 points1 point ago

Guys nobody panic. But I think the blue jays just did something awesome!!!

(I doubt anyone will get this reference)

Why is Bill Cosby announcing?

[–]nutsackhairbrush 0 points1 point ago

i want to see the rest of the play

[–]azuldev 0 points1 point ago

That pitcher has a crazy reaction time.

[–]gvendurf 0 points1 point ago

That's one of many things I don't understand about baseball. Aren't the throwers terrified of the ball hitting them in the face? Hard?

[–]Meanest_Phlebotomist 0 points1 point ago

Only if it actually comes close, and serious injuries are fairly rare. Getting hit in the head usually only means a concussion, if that, though a pitcher did suffer a fractured skull this year.

[–]singing_monster 0 points1 point ago

Hankook: New movie about a super-hero pitcher who gives no fucks, starring Ouiil Smith.

[–]itsuwaribito 0 points1 point ago

i think i laughed harder at the way the batter ran, still carrying the bat.

[–]AltoidNerd 0 points1 point ago

This is awesome but not funny.

[–]CallmePadre 0 points1 point ago

All I noticed was the ginger in the background distracting that girl and enjoying his hot dog. Soulless bastard! You had home seats!

[–]Musclecar123 0 points1 point ago

I was at this game! Aside from this play, it was one of the worst pitching performances I've ever seen.

[–]winesti 1 point2 points ago

I think "Go go Gadget" should make a come-back.

[–]GringoDeMaio 0 points1 point ago

years ago I saw a left-handed pitcher throw a pitch, and the batter hit a line drive to the pitchers left. The pitcher (no idea what he was thinking) threw his glove (which was on his right hand of course) behind his back and to the left. And the glove, in mid-air, caught the ball and fell to the ground. The pitcher ran over, picked the ball out of the glove, and threw the batter out at first. And I can't find video of it anywhere. I would think I had imagined it or it happened in a dream or something but I remember so distinctly the announcer flipping out saying "you could try that a million times: IT WON'T HAPPEN!!!"

Did anyone else see this? Am I crazy?

[–]tylermchenry 0 points1 point ago

If that happened, it was called incorrectly by the umpire. Per MLB rules, the batter should have been awarded three bases:

7.05

Each runner including the batter-runner may, without liability to be put out, advance --

(c) Three bases, if a fielder deliberately throws his glove at and touches a fair ball. The ball is in play and the batter may advance to home base at his peril.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/runner_7.jsp

[–]GringoDeMaio 0 points1 point ago

funny that this should come up not three hours after I was explaining some of the basics of baseball to my roommate and realized I no longer despise the game.

[–]HarietTubmanWasWhite 0 points1 point ago

Excellent title.

[–]sergev -3 points-2 points ago

Go go gadget repost

[–]zuhause -1 points0 points ago

i hate baseball, but this was pretty cool

[–]roger_podakter 0 points1 point ago

Would that be an out if he didn't catch the glove?

[–]WonkaKnowsBest -1 points0 points ago

No...The last time this was posted they had a whole debate on it and a guy that was an umpire said technically either way it wouldnt be an out because it left his hand, though because he didn't intentionally throw it, it could be called either way.

[–]Aviator8989 -1 points0 points ago

This isn't right at all... Players bobble catches all the time before gaining solid possession. The only time this makes a difference is on a throw to a base on a force-out. The ball never hits the ground, and is therefore a live ball.

[–]WonkaKnowsBest 0 points1 point ago

Apparently I wasn't clear enough. If the glove leaves your hand, it won't count.

[–]Aviator8989 -1 points0 points ago

Ah, I thought you were referring to the ball. And my argument to your point would be that the ball was in his glove before his glove left his hand...

[–]OperatorMike 0 points1 point ago

Id liek to know this too. Since it was on his hand when it was first caught.

[–]alexanderfsu 1 point2 points ago

No. It would not be an out if he dropped it.

[–]jarizzle151 0 points1 point ago

Only in Canada
