Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

How is that done?

[–]wellihaveamonacle[S] 4 points5 points ago

Its a technique called "light painting" you do it by keeping the shutter of your camera open and moving a glowstick/sparkler/source of light around and making a figure

[–]kur1j 2 points3 points ago

I want to know how people actually "paint" it to look accurate. When I try to light paint stuff (e.g. my name) it looks terrible bc I can never get the spacing correct.

[–]orangespinach 3 points4 points ago

It's hard because you can't see where you've been, but if you're conscious of how the final image should look it's do-able. It's like drawing on a piece of paper with your eyes shut.

Here are a few I've done. I used a point-and-shoot camera, which could only hold the shutter open for 3 seconds, so I was also under a time crunch.

Self portrait Name Batman

[–]Dexter_of_Trees 0 points1 point ago

But won't it just catch you moving all around too?

[–]orangespinach 0 points1 point ago

Yep, it does. But it picks up the bright light easiest. In OP's photo you can see his feet all over the ground, etc. On mine, you can see my face and movement of my body in one of the photos, too. Since I'm dark, it doesn't "see" me very well.

Before I read your post I was convinced this was shopped. Now I'm even more convinced.

If they ever made a 4th Nolan film in some alternate universe -- they could cast this dude as an extra when Batman needs to strike some symbolic fear into the hearts of his enemies. Along with these guys as the villains.

[–]McRodo 1 point2 points ago

Wow that's one of the most annoying and obnoxious blog articles I've ever read.

[–]VinceMcMannequin 0 points1 point ago

I rather liked it. I thought a lot of the choices could work well. Any reason as to why?

[–]McRodo 0 points1 point ago

Just the way it was written. Maybe it's because I'm finding this geek fad to be really fucking annoying by now, I used to be humiliated in school because I liked comic books, now it's like it's a social norm for "cool".... and nothing sells more than "cool". It's annoying because it reads like a COSMO article, it has no depth whatsoever, the choices are inconsequential and really poorly thought out (really, Clive Owens in a cameo role? How do you sell that to his agent?), it just seems like the guy googled which actors are hot at the moment and he just looked for characters that kind of fit their profile. I found the article to be obnoxious because the author seems to be more interested in name dropping obscure Batman villains to show how much of a geek he is than actually write something of content. I mean look at the Riddler choice, it either comes down to Johnny Depp or "that guy who played Doctor Who" (because you know... geeks love Doctor Who, they will agree with me).... as a matter of fact ALL of these actors are actors that can be tied to the not so underground anymore subculture of "geek".

Overall I found the article to have no real thought or original ideas, it was just a list of name drops.

[–]VinceMcMannequin 0 points1 point ago

I think the article is more of a dream-cast scenario as opposed to a proposition towards agents/Hollywood execs for making a real movie. I thought it was fun to read... I also wasn't expecting War and Peace or a Roger Ebert critique on filmmaking either going into it, so maybe that's where you and I differ.

I didn't infer the same vibe that you're getting from the article, that is someone trying to be "cool by showing how nerdy they are" -- and I never saw the "that guy who played Doctor Who," line mentioned anywhere. Do you have some kind of personal bias?

I agree that the "geek fad" with girls like Olivia Munn proclaiming "how nerdy they are" is a little annoying, but only as much as you let it be. If you truly think it's just a fad -- then the phonies will fade away as soon as the fad does and we can all go back to singing koombaya and the 1967 Spider-Man theme around the campfire.

He should have moved more when painting the symbol. Other wise really cool.

[–]valkyrio 1 point2 points ago

Looks like a bunny.

[–]themuseful 0 points1 point ago

batman with bunny ears :D

[–]ofiveo 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a rabbit/bat hybrid.

[–]penisinthepeanutbttr 0 points1 point ago

So, long exposure+some kind of road flare or sparkler?

[–]LoraCine 0 points1 point ago

no, not so cool.

[–]ConSWAG 0 points1 point ago

Not to sound like a novice, but I always wondered how people made pictures like this.

[–]Cullly 0 points1 point ago

/r/lightgraffiti

Basically they set their camera somewhere. Dark places work better. They make their camera take a photo on as low ISO as possible to pick up the light properly for say 30 seconds. You will have to experiment to get it right. Use a remote to turn on your camera. Get a little torch or light source and write stuff in the air... try to finish before the 30 seconds is up. Stuff that stays still will look clear and someone running around messing with a light will be so ghosted that you will not see them (if done right).

[–]vaderxman 0 points1 point ago

I really love slow shutter pictures and this is one of my favorites! Did you use sparklers? I never thought to use those. This is great!

[–]Bozzler -1 points0 points ago

Awesome idea, does anyone have the heart to tell him that the logo isn't quite right?

[–]sleepchomper 3 points4 points ago

I was about to say that, but then found out how it was done... It might be a bit off, but he did a pretty damn good job.

[–]Bozzler 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, definitely a good job! I shouldn't have pointed it out, I feel like a tool now!

[–]BrickWiggles 3 points4 points ago

To be fair, there's a shitload of batman logos.

[–]Bozzler 1 point2 points ago

Ah fair enough, I'd not seen all of those to be honest.

I do like that last one though, classic!

[–]ICouldEatAKnobAtNite 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure that bottom left one isn't a batman logo, but a comb that somehow snuck in there.
