Duh, it's a medical device to hold them still for stitches and IV placement. It's not for the public, so parents don't get ideas!

[–]ChoadFarmer 26 points27 points ago

I worked at a psych hospital with a childrens wing, it's also used to keep them from harming themselves or other kids when they go berserk.

[–]mindglitch 8 points9 points ago

I needed stitches for a cut when I was six. These are actually quite comfortable.

[–]that_red_rooster 9 points10 points ago

When I was a kid I had to get stitches on my lips and I would not sit still so.... They strapped me down with one of these.

[–]OilySalmon 2 points3 points ago

I would scream bloody murder the whole time. I used to absolutely flip out when I even so much as went to get my teeth cleaned. I can't begin to imagine how terrible I'd be going through something that actually caused pain.

[–]kyleyankan 3 points4 points ago

Former EMT / Rescue Tech here - this is correct.

[–]glacius3000 10 points11 points ago

They put my little brother in one of these when he got his stomach pumped. He swallowed some pills and had to be taken to the hospital. They didnt want him to move and rip all the equipment out.

[–]Hithenameisbj 10 points11 points ago

My aunt works in a special needs school, some kids are mentally handicapped, some have bad anger issues. Anyway shit gets real prison yardy there sometimes, a mentally challenged kid ripped a teachers ear off once. If a kid turns violent they use special wrestling moves and devices like this to restrain them.

[–]dorky2 3 points4 points ago

It's not really wrestling moves. It's deescalation, calming, and restraint moves. Wrestling implies that there's some kind of strong-arming going on, and that's very rare. I'm only trained in the basic level, but I've seen more restrictive ones used. The techniques we use are not designed to take the kid down.

[–]Hithenameisbj 0 points1 point ago

Of course, 9 times out of 10, it's a mentally challenged kid who got spooked by something, and starts flailing. They straddle the kid from behind, wrap their legs around the kid's, while sort of putting the kid in a full nelson to restrain all of the limbs, and to keep the kid from smashing their face with the back of the kids head. They obviously don't do it aggressively, or in a manner to hurt the kid, they are just protecting themselves and other students.

[–]dorky2 -1 points0 points ago

No, this is false. It is a full nelson 0 times out of 10. We don't use wrestling moves on children.

[–]Hithenameisbj 0 points1 point ago

From what I was shown a full nelson is the best way of describing it, there is of course no intention to inflict pain, and the child's head isn't shoved downwards, but they placed their flattened hands infront of thier own face to protect it. I understand that you have teaining in this, and you seem to be offended by my over simplification of this, but short of drawing a diagram a full nelson with added descriptors is close enough.

[–]Crimyote 2 points3 points ago

Ripped the teacher's ear off... like... clean off?

[–]Hithenameisbj 0 points1 point ago

Kid just grabbed and yanked man, apparently it's not that hard to do.

[–]samyall 2 points3 points ago

There is a really interesting Louis Theroux documentary about this. Really opened my eyes at how difficult it can be raise an autistic child and just how amazing some of the parents and carers are.

[–]Hithenameisbj 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, its definitely a very challenging endeavor.

[–]HeWhoHungers 2 points3 points ago

Tonight on ESPN 8, Child Wrestling!

[–]verugan 0 points1 point ago

Like the DDT, classic

[–]Hithenameisbj 0 points1 point ago

Lol, you'd probably get charges pressed on you for that one.

[–]Flying__Penguin 29 points30 points ago

  • Optional Crown of Thorns if additional martyrdom is required.

*Spear sold separately.

[–]IAMGodAMA 10 points11 points ago

*Resurrection not included.

[–]karnim 5 points6 points ago

Oh, so only your son is important enough to get a resurrection? Way to be a dick, God.

[–]caleen 2 points3 points ago

"Fixing you people is tough. It took me an entire afternoon just to build the first one", God said.

[–]KamenRiderJ 7 points8 points ago

It's the new My Little Jesus set from mattel

[–]FakesNoveltyAccounts 5 points6 points ago

My Little Jesus: Salvation is Magic

[–]Jack_Half-a-prayer 2 points3 points ago

I was put in one of those when I was 6 because I was trying to hit anyone who would touch me. I had my ear nearly cut off with a wagon handle.

[–]TheNightsBane 0 points1 point ago

Perfect for the Roman Empire too!

[–]anathema30 0 points1 point ago

Perfect for scared kids, huh? You mean once you take it out and they see it?

[–]tuckfenpin 2 points3 points ago

I remember getting into one of these as a child, calm and collected. As soon as stitches went into my lip I screamed my lungs out

[–]IAteAMachine 4 points5 points ago

I'm not sure these people know what the spread-eagle position is.

[–]Ouizardus 1 point2 points ago

Oh, I think they know exactly what they're referring to...if you know what I mean.

[–]Fluffyunicorn12 2 points3 points ago

I was strapped into one of those when I was little after I ran into a railing and my two little bottom teeth went through my lip... Hahaha to say the least It was traumatizing and I'm convinced it caused my fear of claustraphobia ...

[–]LauretteOB 2 points3 points ago

I was put in one after I busted my chin open at the age of three, and I cussed at the doctor.

[–]Lilzillaz 0 points1 point ago

I used to get strapped in to one of these every time I went to the dentist. I haven't been back since I was like 12. I have black teeth but my sanity is intact!

[–]essenceofmeaning 0 points1 point ago

i was strapped into one of those when i was little!! they're awful and i loathed the doctors for years because of it. damn, i thought i'd suppressed that memory.

[–]Fancy_Frogglin -1 points0 points ago

You're actually in something like this for a C-Section. Not a fun time. Then it is sorta. Then it's not fun again.

[–]quarktheduck 1 point2 points ago

I had a C-section a little over a year ago and I was not strapped down in any way...

[–]Fancy_Frogglin -1 points0 points ago

Don't know what to tell ya, you probably should have been for safety.

[–]that_car_girl 1 point2 points ago

I Got out of one of those When I was like 5. Grandpa is a dentist. Fun times

[–]needsmusictosurvive 0 points1 point ago

upvote for literally four minutes of laughter

[–]Crownowa 1 point2 points ago

Seen these type of restrainment units used at the dentist.

[–]well_hello_there 0 points1 point ago

All right, I don't have kids, but from what I understand, it's ridiculous. I am fairly sure you don't have kids either, because people with kids, I think, understand the desire--the need, even--to occasionally immobilize their children with velcro.

[–]Campollia 0 points1 point ago

Oh god, i just remembered a nightmare i had was actually real.

was a little kid, and got hit in the face with one of those Nintendo 64 duck hunt guns, and got taken to the hospital, where i freaked out when they gave me stitches, so they had to put me in one of these things. That, plus shoving a needle in my face freaked me out soooooo bad.

They are pretty effective though, if you want to also traumatize the kid at the same time.

[–]TheeFlipper 1 point2 points ago

What are they doing to Jonathan Lipnicki!?!

[–]Psych277 0 points1 point ago

I work in a juvenile detention facility. I wish we could legally use these.

[–]generichenle 0 points1 point ago

While this does look pretty... Stupid/scary. It does serve a good purpose. While helping out the Special ED class at my school. There was a student that would hit himself on the head repeatedly, even to the point where he drew blood. So we would have to use this type of device for a few minutes for him to calm down. So I could give the classic, "well it's for his own good." but that just sounds wrong.

[–]Jatacid 0 points1 point ago

They used to use these in dentistry lol

[–]DocWarlock 1 point2 points ago

Once upon a time these kids were too pussy to get a frisbee out of a tree. I gave no fucks so I went to go get it. While climbing, I managed to catch a branch in the eye, it tore my eyelid and I needed stitches. They had to put me in one of these.

[–]dorky2 0 points1 point ago

Must we have this conversation every couple of months? These are for kids with disabilities, and should only be used when their safety depends on it.

[–]Crimyote 0 points1 point ago

also to secure children at the doctors for the ones that flip out at the sight of a needle.

[–]dorky2 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Again, only used to assure the child's safety.

[–]verugan 0 points1 point ago

Especially when duct taped to the hood of a car going 70

[–]mirglof 0 points1 point ago

it was weird when i read that there was a spread eagle position and only became not weird when i saw in the comments that these aren't for public use.

[–]DavidJudilla 0 points1 point ago

This is actually a big deal in the medical field. There was a news headline about a dentist who forced child patients to use this and not telling the parents that they were using it.

[–]Crimyote 0 points1 point ago

I love how the kid in the picture just has an expression of, "This shit again? Seriously?"

[–]TiredMedic 0 points1 point ago

This is also used for children who've possibly sustained an injury to their neck or back, as an immobilizer. preventing further injury. also the arm restraints are great if their care provider has to start an IV.

[–]MiddAlien 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who got stitches as a kid and wasn't restrained?

[–]snuffs 0 points1 point ago

Great for crucifixions as well as water boarding!

[–]Troyster94 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a very fucked up rape toy

[–]alwayswithglee 0 points1 point ago

They're used in hospitals. I'm not going to lie. I was totally strapped into one of these when I was a kid. I had an allergic reaction to an insect bite and they had to draw blood. I was trying to run away. I ask myself sometimes, where the heck was i planning to go?

[–]Rehauu 0 points1 point ago

Wow, I just got pinned by like 4 nurses and a volunteer firefighter who happened to have been walking by. I must have been strong for an ~8 year old girl...

[–]toofine 0 points1 point ago

Or for people who really love children, amirite?

[–]wanker_bob 0 points1 point ago

When I got stitches as a kid I had a cute nurse hold my hand.
Not so much luck these days.

Nobody fucking cares.

[–]Kenpochad -2 points-1 points ago

It's for neck or spinal injuries.

[–]Backpack_Stargazer 4 points5 points ago

It has a medical use but not quite what you're thinking. A C-Collar and board would be a much better option than this.

[–]mrshootzy -2 points-1 points ago

Perfect for your everyday child rapist available at your local CVS or Walgreen's.

[–]CoyoteStark 0 points1 point ago

That's gonna lead to some weird fetishes later on in life.

[–]Rabbl -2 points-1 points ago

Honestly this could REALLY go wrong.

[–]Skulljanik 0 points1 point ago

Also used for immobilization during circumcision.

[–]Finleigh -1 points0 points ago

The usual just-plopped-out-of-Mom's-gash circumcision, or for (heaven help the little guy) getting the tip nipped at an older age?

[–]Skulljanik 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, for the 2-day-old babies. I actually had a patient who had a circumcision at 92 years because of phimosis from poor hygiene. He was pretty grumpy.

[–]Absolum -2 points-1 points ago

/r/atheism could prolly put this post to even better use. This is hilarious.

[–]zorospride -2 points-1 points ago

This was probably invented by a Therapist to ensure future business.
