                          Fucking impressionist painters! A friend of mine has the puzzle of the "Exploding TARDIS" from Doctor Who, which in the show was painted by Van Gogh. It's so many blurs and swilrs with almost no hard lines that while you can sort pieces by color (or, more accurately, shades of color), you can't even begin to look at a piece and know where physically in the puzzle it's going to go.

                          We've spent full days on that thing, and it's not even close to done.

                                As a person who used to love doing puzzles, I tried something similar to this with a friend and it traumatized me and made me hate puzzles for life.

                                                    I did this puzzle a few years ago. It wasn't nearly as hard as you'd think, I finished it in about a week, maybe 40-50 hours of work. I didn't have a real job at the time.

                                                    The real trick is realizing that image is the same on both sides and rotated 90 degrees. This means that every single piece has a twin that goes in the same location reflected across the bottom-left-to-top-right diagonal.

                                                    The bottom right corner piece and the top left corner pieces are identical and interchangeable. As are the pieces that go above the bottom right and to the right of the top left. And so on in that fashion until the puzzle is finished.

                                                                                                      On Linux (and probably Unix) systems X11 is part of the system used to draw the graphical user interface (instead of a command line). Xorg.conf is the text based config file for it, if you edit it and get it wrong (easy to do) you are usually stuck in the command line until you can fix it.

                                                                                                                    I saw one of those in a store once. it was a bunch of M.C. Escher style stairs with guys walking up & down them.

                                                                                                                    I looked at the box for about 3 min... then decided that was as far as I was going to get on that puzzle, and put it back on the shelf.

                                                                                                                      I tried doing one of those. A rather large part of the picture is covered by some stupid banner with the name of the puzzle so I couldn't see what the picture looked like underneath. Also, the edges of the puzzle picture on the box don't represent the actual puzzles. Absolute hell.

They're crazy. They take 1000-piece puzzles, mix two together, remove all the edge pieces, then do them in a weekend. They even did a Magic Eye puzzle...which, if you're wondering, was a solid sheet of only slightly-patterned green.
