Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Why is jew not an acceptable word?

[–]LukaCola 82 points83 points ago

Proper nouns are not acceptable words.

[–]Armand9x 17 points18 points ago

Batman.

[–]dokydoky 10 points11 points ago

Jew can also be used as a verb. It may be offensive, but I think it should count.

[–]the_goat_boy 8 points9 points ago

I really got Jewed out of that one.

[–]Rikon 0 points1 point ago

"Thats so jew dude"

[–]Tobislu 5 points6 points ago

As a Jew, I use this in Scrabble all the time.

[–]Khuskan 0 points1 point ago

Only in the US. Mattel owns the Scrabble trademark in the rest of the world, and they recently updated the rules to allow proper nouns.

[–]Dbag_supremo -3 points-2 points ago

Why not?

[–]LukaCola 11 points12 points ago

Names are proper nouns.

Now think about why those would not be allowed.

...

Not gonna wait for a response in case you don't get it. The reason is that proper nouns can be anything.

Paul is a name right? Well I can also say Xzyqul is a name and get massive points. That would hardly be good for the game.

[–]SlurmNator 10 points11 points ago

Naming my baby Xzyqul.

[–]Parlock 2 points3 points ago

"ReadCommentWhileJizzing" would be a more appropriate name.

[–]dramaticlyreadsposts 0 points1 point ago

That was my first instinct, but reddit only allows for 20-character usernames...

[–]BobTheSheriff 0 points1 point ago

This is too good.

[–]iheartbakon 0 points1 point ago

Because that's the rule.

[–]Dbag_supremo 0 points1 point ago

I was asking why it was the rule obviously.

[–]BaneOfSorrows 2 points3 points ago

Ask Hasbro. They invented scrabble and that's the rule they decided on.

E: Well they didn't invent it but they own the rights now. Ask Alfred Mosher Butts I guess.

[–]BobTheSheriff -1 points0 points ago

Heh heh... butts...

[–][deleted] ago

[–]crampedstyl 0 points1 point ago

It's a word, so...

[–]AdrianDJones 0 points1 point ago

Maybe they hire people who think like my mother. She got in a tirade when she angry texted someone without proof-reading. Her android converted all the "he"s to "Jew"s.

After the other person called her out for the most racist text he had ever seen she spent two weeks proclaiming it should not have even been in the dictionary as Jew is not a real term and doesn't exist. There are Jewish people, citizens of Israel, and the old Hebrews, no Jews.

[–]Golden_Kumquat -1 points0 points ago

While there is a lowercase version of "jew", it is considered an offensive verb.

[–]Msj2705 46 points47 points ago

Somehow it is considered derogatory even though all of the jews I know call themselves and other jewish people jews. And nobody is ever offended ever.

[–]misandree 31 points32 points ago

No, it's just a proper noun. Proper nouns are not legal plays in Scrabble and Scrabble derivatives.

[–]dpwood 3 points4 points ago

WWF uses the ENABLE dictionary, which does contain JEW. Zynga made some of their own changes, presumably in the sake of avoiding offence. JEW was one of a handful of words they removed.

[–]Calypso440 1 point2 points ago

I haven't heard of WWF, but the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary agrees. Hindu, Christian, and Muslim are also unacceptable because they are proper nouns. The word "Jew" isn't offensive and has nothing to do with it.

[–]retrace 0 points1 point ago

When used as a verb, jew is not a proper noun. This usage is offensive.

[–]Calypso440 2 points3 points ago

As in "He jews, They jew"? You mean when the part of speech is used incorrectly it's no longer that part of speech? The word "jew" is not a verb. Someone using it that way is incorrect. Changing word usages is fine and all, but it doesn't change the part of speech. Also, you can use lots of words in derogatory contexts but that doesn't make the word itself derogatory (e.g. "Shut Up Woman")

[–]retrace -1 points0 points ago

Jewing someone is taking advantage of them; it is inherently offensive because it plays off of stereotypes that Jewish people are greedy and deceptive. I ninja-edited jew to include a Wiktionary link, so I don't know if it was there when you initially clicked "reply."

[–]Calypso440 0 points1 point ago

I'm not disagreeing with you that that usage is offensive, what I'm saying is that it doesn't make the word "jew" itself offensive, to merit exclusion from a dictionary. If that was the case any word that's occasionally misappropriated to be offensive would be scrapped, and we'd have no words to refer to lots of populations. Thankfully, that's not how language and dictionaries word (although apparently it's how some online word games work) EDIT: conclusion: It is correct to exclude it because it's proper classification is that it's a proper noun, not because it's an offensive word

[–]misandree -1 points0 points ago

I think you're looking for any excuse to be offended.

[–]Golden_Kumquat 1 point2 points ago

It is acceptable as a verb. It's considered offensive, so that's probably why it's usually not included.

[–]SergeantStapler 64 points65 points ago

One time someone told me that the proper term is "Jewish person". When I told them that "Jewish" is derived from the word "Jew" they told me I was a racist. I'd call them a retard but I'll play it safe and just say they were a "retarded person".

[–]kraig2 5 points6 points ago

I also know a person like that, but it's fine as long as that person is the one saying "jew" and no one else. The thing is that very often, people will say that X is offensive or a racial slur, but what makes it like that? It only depends on your social environment and the derived culture. A concrete example would be that in an area/country where homosexuals rights aren't entirely recognized then in this area it might be considered offensive to say certain things that target homosexuals. However, if the same thing is said where homosexual's rights are recognize without a doubt it wouldn't be offensive at all. Same apply for the usage of certain expressions. Unfortunately, if you mix two group of different culture, one group will get easily offended by something that is casual for the second group. Then the first group will force the second group to bind to THEIR culture and stoping them to be so "offensive".

Btw, "Jewish person" is as stupid as saying "Canadian person". It's redundant and useless. It gets even weirder in other languages where it literally translate to "jew" and then it might offend someone. In french, jew is "juif" (about same length) which designate a person of the Judaism faith. Jewish, as in english, is an adjective (derived from the noun "jew") to describe an object or something. It's just... really wrong.. even in french.

[–]coveryfire -3 points-2 points ago

Racist neo nazi who wants to kill 6 million jews! A mythical number indeed.

[–]pgibso 6 points7 points ago

If it means anything Hitler isn't an allowable word either. I tried...

[–]Jew_Crusher 2 points3 points ago

Dang.

[–]greenflops 9 points10 points ago

I am not a complete Jew.. But I am Jew'ish

[–]beamoflaser 4 points5 points ago

Depends on the context. You can't go around throwing hard J's everywhere.

[–]Jew_Crusher 0 points1 point ago

When do you wanna hangout again?

[–]Amandrai 1 point2 points ago

I think you have to think about words like this in context. "Woman" is a common, innocuous word, but "Get me a beer, woman" is a completely different story. Someone said to non-Jewish me, for instance, "Don't be such a Jew" when I refused to hand something of mine over. Not to mention any other number of clinical names which have become insults (retard, spastic, cretin, etc.). Or to get "gypped" from supposedly just-a-proper-noun "gypsy".

I'm sure we could make a pretty big list of words that are totally ordinary and run of the mill, but really biting in an aggressive context, which shows how there is stigma attached.

[–]fu11m3ta1 -4 points-3 points ago

I think it's funny how nobody gives two shits when someone calls somebody a Jew, but when you call them a nigger, shits serious.

[–]BobTheSheriff 9 points10 points ago

Jew=not actual derogatory term

Nigger=actual derogatory term.

[–]sleeplessone 3 points4 points ago

In both cases it apparently depends on the context.

"Stop being a Jew" = derogatory term

Nigger when used between two black people = apparently not a derogatory term.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]arienh4 0 points1 point ago

And what if someone who is black is offended by another black person using that word?

Offense is personal. You're generalizing, and racist in a rather ironic manner.

[–]lolrsk8s_2 13 points14 points ago

Neither 'Muslim' nor 'Christian' nor 'Jew' is an official scrabble word.

http://www.hasbro.com/scrabble/en_US/search.cfm

[–]annul 8 points9 points ago

read these two links for more information. "jew" IS legal in tournament play (the only play that matters).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_Tournament_and_Club_Word_List

[–]lolrsk8s_2 -1 points0 points ago

Ok but I'm fairly certain Zynga just scraped Hasbro's site for the dictionary.

[–]annul 0 points1 point ago

yes, but jew IS an "official scrabble word" even if it is not in the OSPD.

[–]lolrsk8s_2 1 point2 points ago

I defer to your scrabble geekiness.

[–]lee1026 1 point2 points ago

The WWF dictionary came from the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon dictionary.

[–]Bite_It_You_Scum 6 points7 points ago

Funnier still is that "jew" isn't acceptable, while "jism" is.

[–]Pencilman7 11 points12 points ago

Jew is considered a proper noun, I believe.

[–]forbearance 7 points8 points ago

That's because Hitler didn't speak English.

[–]Not_a_necromorph 4 points5 points ago

Literally.Hitler.

[–]Ggdograa 0 points1 point ago

Hitler jokes...stay classy, Reddit...

[–]tmac717 -1 points0 points ago

I did this same thing, and it was a word for like 25 points or somethings... I know that feel bro

[–]CaptainScrambles 1 point2 points ago

I just tried to click OK...

I am a moron.

[–]indridcold137 0 points1 point ago

Yup. Strangely enough, 'Yid' works perfectly well.

[–]VAGINADICK 0 points1 point ago

What is this, words with villes?

[–]internetexplorerftw -1 points0 points ago

HITLER SPELLED NOYHING WRONG!

[–]dreadredheadzedsdead 0 points1 point ago

Fucking seriously, I had about an 80 point word with 'jew'. Would have just crushed my opponent.

[–]Creeks42887 1 point2 points ago

I also took a picture of my words with friends when I tried to use the word Jew. Words with friends hipster, or great minds think alike?

[–]_shakta 0 points1 point ago

Jew isn't ok but shag is? All of my wat.

[–]ProfessorCaptain 0 points1 point ago

Wordfeud lets you play jew.

[–]BIG_AMERIKAN_T_T_S 0 points1 point ago

It's funny because Zynga is literally Hitler, amirite?

[–]annul 0 points1 point ago

read these two links for more information. "jew" IS legal in tournament play (the only play that matters).

[–]Jonny_Watts 0 points1 point ago

I saw a picture of this that said "Sorry, emo is not an acceptable word" followed by a picture of a depressed emo kid sitting on a railroad track.

[–]JHarbo327 0 points1 point ago

You also could have spelled 'Fire' or 'life'! And some other words.. I dunno, I was never good at scrabble, or words with bias.

[–]MrWolfies 0 points1 point ago

I kept clicking on OK, and not realizing it.

[–]laserbeanz 0 points1 point ago

My phone only loaded the top part, "u bit a shag pi hid" and I was like "why would hitler say that?"

[–]elio_x3 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone else notice the background? "You bit a shag pi" lol

[–]hatesyolo01 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one here who tapped the cancel button vigorously before realizing that it was just an image?

[–]machiavelly 1 point2 points ago

At a glance the two words in the top right looked like "shit bag" instead of "bit shag".

[–]allover_twist 0 points1 point ago

I once tried to play 'Jewish' with J on a triple letter score and hitting the triple word score. Zynga told me it wasn't an acceptable word. My reaction: "I can't believe I just got Jewed out of 138 points."

[–]APWTSIS 0 points1 point ago

Is "repost" an acceptable word?

[–]Fritoontheradio[S] 0 points1 point ago

If you want it to be, but I took this screenshot off my phone when I played the word, so perhaps the joke has been made before but this is my original content from my game.

[–]APWTSIS 0 points1 point ago

I've seen it posted here a few times before but I'll take you at your word.

[–]the_don_quixote -1 points0 points ago

Are people still playing this game?

[–]nlockie 0 points1 point ago

Tried this many times....they must not want you to get so many points from such a small word :(

[–]skyman724 -1 points0 points ago

Sorry, Jew is not an acceptable world.

FTUFY

[–]carrera594 0 points1 point ago

Is it sad that the first thing I thought was, "People still play this game?"

[–]Clownbaby94 0 points1 point ago

U bit a shag pi? That sounds like it could be dirty somehow. I'd like to bite her shag pie.

[–]topagae 0 points1 point ago

It's because Pincus is Jewish, it was almost impossible to ever get any damned bacon or ham.

[–]armydog830 0 points1 point ago

....I would have posted this last year......but I didn't know reddit existed......I'ma go kill my self for the 1000+ karma I could be enjoying right now.....

[–]raddisease 0 points1 point ago

Nazi is considered unacceptable by the game too.

[–]JennaIsMe 0 points1 point ago

Then i guess "Zynga" must be as well.

[–]Pantzzzzless 0 points1 point ago

I saw the top 3 words as: "you shit bag".

[–]n0w4yh0s4 0 points1 point ago

I had this a while back :( Didn't think to post it here haha.

[–]hardyrocker 0 points1 point ago

Jew is not an acceptable word, but 'Shag' is ?

[–]Fritoontheradio[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yes, because shag is a type of carpet, amongst other things. It's also a verb:

shag [shag] Show IPA verb (used with object), shagged, shag·ging. 1. to chase or follow after; pursue. 2. to go after and bring back; fetch. 3. Baseball . to retrieve and throw back (fly balls) in batting practice.

[–]Tylernator 0 points1 point ago

BA ZYNGA!

[–]LyTwLdR 0 points1 point ago

I tried to exit the picture by clicking OK.

[–]specialk_dn 0 points1 point ago

God Damn It, I knew I should have posted it when I saw it back in may. Nothing but another missed karma opportunity ;)

[–]Doctor-Goat 0 points1 point ago

Is shag an acceptable word?

[–]Eupho 1 point2 points ago

Bazynga!

[–]fondue_me 1 point2 points ago

Neither is "nazi" though.

[–]Droviin 2 points3 points ago

Correction: Nazi. It's a proper noun

[–]manton11 0 points1 point ago

Nazi is just short for National Socialist, and if I'm not mistaken shortenings aren't allowed in Scrabble.

[–]misandree -1 points0 points ago

In fairness, "der grossdeutchesreich" is also an unacceptable word.

[–]IAMAFilmLover 6 points7 points ago

I believe it is das Großdeutsches Reich.

[–]lookFreeCandy 0 points1 point ago

It is " das Großdeutsche Reich" without the "s". Just FYI, not to be a grammar nazi

[–]scurvebeard -3 points-2 points ago

You bit a shag pi?

HIDE!
