[–]Otterfan 335 points336 points ago

Context: this was part of a protest against a law that made Russian an official language of Ukraine. In other pictures the person spraying the tear gas can be seen wearing a shirt with the logo of All-Ukrainian Union "Svoboda" a far-right nationalist political party opposed to Russian participation in Ukrainian government.

Their platform includes:

  • Criminal prosecution for “Ukrainophobia”
  • The restoration of the Soviet practice of indicating the ethnic origin in passports and on birth certificates
  • Proportional representation on executive bodies of ethnic Ukrainians, on the one hand, and national minorities, on the other
  • Ban on adoptions by non-Ukrainians of Ukrainian children
  • Preferential treatment for Ukrainian students in the allocation of dormitory places, and a series of similar changes to existing legal provisions
  • Farmlands are to be state-owned and given to farmers in hereditary use
  • The state is to implement a firm pro-family policy
  • An explicit guarantee of accession to NATO within a set period of time
  • Ukraine should again re-acquire tactical nuclear weapons

Basically this guy is a member of a neo-Nazi party.

EDIT: Not that you would have to be far-right to oppose this law. Just saying that this guy is a far-right nationalist.

[–]LastRedCoat 110 points111 points ago

A lot of Ukrainians treated the Nazis as liberators. Then Hitler started killing them and that stopped.

[–]jonathanrdt 133 points134 points ago

"We've made a terrible mistake"

[–]wrc-wolf 61 points62 points ago

Considering what they'd been going through under Stalin, its understandable.

[–]Luno13 34 points35 points ago

+1000. All the facts must be considered. Ukrainians aren't necessarily pro-fascist by nature.

[–]DoorMarkedPirate 8 points9 points ago

Yeah I'm pretty sure more Ukrainians died due to Stalin's Forced Famine than due to Nazi invasion. Actually, I just looked it up and a similar number of Ukrainians died due to the forced famine as Jews died due to the holocaust.

[–]Slotos 12 points13 points ago

Ukraine was divided in three during that time. The ones that have been broken by USSR regime, the ones that were hoping to use Nazi to get their freedom and the ones who fought all invaders all at once.

All in all "Hitler" wasn't much different from "Stalin" in terms of political/ethnic cleansing.

[–]PsiAmp 2 points3 points ago

Of course they did, Stalin just killed over 7 million of Ukrainians in 1932-33 in Holodomor (famine-genocide). I guess their memory was still fresh on this "minor incident".

[–]NotTheDude[S] 40 points41 points ago

thank you for the context.

[–]bowei006 9 points10 points ago

Their platform is so weird, I can't even call it Neo-Nazi

Some of the stuff they want would benefit from Russia and or are reminescent of the USSR, but then...they want to join NATO. That can't be called neo nazi if they want to join Nato.

[–]ararphile 0 points1 point ago

So called third position.

[–]nikitakaganovich -1 points0 points ago

aside from joining NATO they are neo-nazis, and the only want to join NATO cause they don't want to fall under Russia's influence and this is the opposite of that. The only other "Soviet" thing is the identifying ethnicity on passports which is fascist as well, (alittle better then on the sleeve but more efficient to be sure).

[–]Luno13 8 points9 points ago

As a former Ukrainian citizen, I agree that Russia shouldn't stick it's fingers in Ukraine's government, and joining NATO might be ok, but everything else you listed is ridiculously xenophobic.

That said, Ukraine is pretty much a shithole right now thanks to corruption and other issues, and it seems like too many people are apathetic, treating everything as if it were the status quo. The only people who seem to by fighting for changes are extremists like this. It's a lose-lose situation.

[–]Pre-Owned-Car 4 points5 points ago

They're like death eaters

[–]thehollowman84 0 points1 point ago

Far right nationalists are not the same as neo-nazis. This Platform doesn't seek to revive nazism. Frankly, it has more in common with the GOP's platform.

[–]Offensive_Username2 13 points14 points ago

Yeah, because the Republicans want to stop babies being adopted by members of other races and nationalize all the farms...

[–]Positron3 46 points47 points ago

This post is exceedingly brave.

[–]lvtrance 3 points4 points ago

They don't say it but they are similar, they are mostly western Ukrainians.

[–]psychroclasm 1 point2 points ago

I knew there would be a connection to soviet Russia in here somewhere.

[–]Phrodo_00 0 points1 point ago

Farmlands are to be state-owned and given to farmers in hereditary use

They suck at being right wing.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]nez-niz 0 points1 point ago

that is interesting, and makes a somewhat connection to the first thing that popped into my head when i saw the picture. Perhaps in bad taste, and terrible, but immediately thought of the old "in soviet russia" joke, with "in soviet russia, protesters mace you" seeing as it was so ass backwards to what you normally see in protest pictures.

[–]FullyCocked 21 points22 points ago

I bet that didn't go over well...

[–]Internet_Gentleman 8 points9 points ago

Protesters should be happy that the other side didn't go "Well, we tried using nonviolent methods like Mace, and you threw it back in our faces. I guess you didn't like that? Fine, fine, we'll go back to the old fashioned way: automatic weapons"

[–]tryALLthenames 16 points17 points ago

So that just went to the top of my list titled "things that will not end well"

I bet the guy that suggested that plan had a bad back or something that day....

[–]belialadin 11 points12 points ago

New update: Protestors arrest police.

[–]Hk37 5 points6 points ago

Of course, given that it's the Ukraine, it'll probably be:

Rioters dead after attacking police.

[–]95688it 43 points44 points ago

!!!! Why does he have 2 Right arms??

[–]WorstTypeOfScum 18 points19 points ago

E. Honda pepper spray attack!

[–]KoolAidPenguin 3 points4 points ago

The right... erm, arm that is SUPPOSED to be the right arm is a bit more buff than the left "right" arm. So either he masturbates a lot with his right arm, or its a different person with a coincidental shirt

[–]Jojii -1 points0 points ago

2 different people, look at the color of the sleeves and skin tone color.

[–]Calvarezz 6 points7 points ago

they still look the same lol

[–]Ihavetheinternets 7 points8 points ago

No, really?

[–]Fzero21 48 points49 points ago

If someone maces the police, they are not a "protester" they are a rioter.

[–]lakk 2 points3 points ago

police, damned if they do and damned if they don't. I like nice cops. I like nice protestors. I hate bad cops. I hate anarchists.

[–]Griddleman 413 points414 points ago

If that happened in the US there would be a lot of gunshots going off.

[–]alepov 508 points509 points ago

I don't think you know much about the ukraine if you think US citizens are worse off.. :p

[–]trampus1 208 points209 points ago

You know what the Ukraine is? It's a sitting duck, a road apple, Newman. The Ukraine is weak. It's feeble. I think it's time to put the hurt on the Ukraine.

[–]bynes21 83 points84 points ago

[–]the_goat_boy 68 points69 points ago

UKRAINE IS GAME TO YOU!?

[–]S_A_N_D_ 14 points15 points ago

I don't think he gets it.

If you die in Ukraine, YOU DIE IN REAL LIFE.

[–]Th3yS33M3Trolling 2 points3 points ago

In Soviet Russia...

Agh... Fuck it. I'm outta here.

[–]Occamslaser 27 points28 points ago

We don't think they're worse off we just think they would be shot in this case.

[–]borkborkbork 9 points10 points ago

But, Amerika is the worst country evar in the history of everything!!! I know because I read Howard Zinn once. Also, Noam Chomsky, etc. RON PAUL!!!

[–]Sarcasm- 60 points61 points ago

America=literally no freedom of speech rights=literally a Hitler state

Ukraine=literally Europe=literally Utopia

[–]InsideYourEar 18 points19 points ago

I wish this "literally Hitler," "So brave" shit would come to an end.

It's fucking annoying and almost at the same level as Confession Bear.

The memes needs to die.

[–]IMakeUMad 49 points50 points ago

you fascist, trying to control what memes we use. You are literally hitler.

[–]Sarcasm- 25 points26 points ago

And I'm tired of seeing this, "the US is the least progressive country in the world," bullshit.

[–]AuRinBei 2 points3 points ago

It increases in relation to the level of circlejerk. I love it, because it only makes terrible subreddits worse without really affecting the good ones.

[–]zanep0 6 points7 points ago

SO BRAVE. Edit: in all seriousness confession bear should of never existed. It should have been whale biologist.

[–]poptart2nd 4 points5 points ago

should have*

[–]r0mster 5 points6 points ago

Ukraine is amazing, if you have money. If you're poor, then well, it's just as bad as everywhere else.

EDIT: Grammar Nazis.

[–]wild-tangent 38 points39 points ago

Riot cops don't go in with guns, the reasoning being that protestors might steal them and shoot the cops.

[–]Godenyen 43 points44 points ago

I'm on a "riot squad" and we have all our normal gear including our firearms. We just add soft armor and helmets. The only time you will see a US officer without their firearm is in a controlled area like a jail.

[–]Alphaeno 5 points6 points ago

Hmm. What if people rushed you and took your guns? 50 vs 500?

[–]Psyc3 59 points60 points ago

Aren't they more likely to just turn up with their own guns, it is American after all.

[–]Squirrelson 24 points25 points ago

As it turns out very few people actually carry their guns all the time.

It's really rare but it does happen. And no guns aren't constantly on our minds when we're out in public either in case you were wondering.

[–]HoagieBun 6 points7 points ago

If the people were going to riot wouldn't that be a time they might grab their guns?

[–]maomao2000 13 points14 points ago

Riots aren't usually planned in advance.

Checks schedule

Ah yes! It's Tuesday! I've got to grab my gun so that I can attend the local riot!

With that said, rioters could leave and come back with guns...

[–]Dr_V 12 points13 points ago

Dear maomao2000,

This is a memo from your office kindly suggesting, for the sake of team morale and productiveness, that you please consider holding off on posting on reddit during what is supposed to be our collaborative working time and instead consider waiting to post until you go home or eat lunch or while waiting for the subway or on the bus or while using the bathroom or ... really just any time other than during our group time. If you could focus your nearly inexhaustible energy away from arguing with cesspools like /r/worldnews and /r/pics (no offense to the five or six other reasonable users of these subreddits) and instead direct your intelligence and tenacity toward our team's projects, we'd all probably have Learjets by now. Please come back and join us in the real world.

We all miss you and we really need you!

/embarrassingly public memo

-- V

[–]Sickofguessing 3 points4 points ago

The fuck?

[–]stevegcook 2 points3 points ago

You're a terrible boss. If you wanted maomao2000 to stay productive and focussed, you probably should have let him take Tuesdays off.

[–]Squirrelson 4 points5 points ago

Most protests turn from peaceful to riot,

It's not often that people go to protests with the intent of rioting. Well we had that happen in Seattle, but that was a dumb situation.

[–]Godenyen 15 points16 points ago

That's why there are certain levels of retention on the holsters. Unless you know how to operate the holster it will take a minute to get it out. We've trained in the academy that whenever someone grabs your gun the fight is on. The tactics also change depending on the crowds. We have officers with pepperball guns to keep people back. Large batons to push, not hit, people back. If they are close enough to grab our guns then we are doing our job wrong. I suppose it is possible, but it will be a bad day for all if that happens. Just remember, grabbing at an officer's firearm is seen as a deadly force action and can be dealt with in a delay force manner.

[–]k3nnyd 3 points4 points ago

Imagine a group of people attempting to charge a phalanx of Roman soldiers and take their swords. Just having a riot shield and something in your other hand to attack with makes you quite a difficult adversary. Plus, if one person in formation can hit you, 2 others are likely to be in range also.

[–]Askesis 4 points5 points ago

By the time of the Republic, the phalanx was no longer in use by Rome (except in the case of the triarii). It was the flexible manipular formation that contributed to many of the victories over those still using the phalanx.

Edit: Also, a phalanx by nature is armed with spears, not swords.

[–]robert_ahnmeischaft 3 points4 points ago

Quite bluntly, if it got to that level of violence in the streets in America, there's a good chance that at least some of the protesters would be armed themselves.

[–]wild-tangent 1 point2 points ago

Really? Odd. Most of the protests I've been to where police are standing by, they don't have firearms.

[–]Godenyen 4 points5 points ago

It may be different else where, but in my city/state we always have our firearms on us. If some starts shooting we are nothing more than witnesses.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 4 points5 points ago

I believe civilian police when it comes to protests/crowds have gas masks to prevent this kind of attack.

[–]redditor-for-2-hours 12 points13 points ago

It's not that the Ukrainians aren't going to get shot for this, it's just that they're Ukrainian, so they don't give a shit.

[–]withinmyown 26 points27 points ago

Yeah that would last about 5 seconds in the US.

[–]MoralisticFaggots 146 points147 points ago

You must be some kind of moon man to think that Ukranian police are more humanitarian than US police.

The people on the right were taking their lives into their hands there.

[–]bowei006 6 points7 points ago

And on that note, is there an update on if they are .....still there?

[–]MoralisticFaggots 1 point2 points ago

Good question. Given that it looks like the crouched over policeman has some sort of automatic weapon hanging over his leg and that they were all wearing vests, it would be reasonable to speculate that they. . . were not.

[–]bowei006 2 points3 points ago

I thought they did too but with the pic posted by Otterfan here:http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/11ffhu/in_ukraine_protesters_mace_the_police/c6m1s02 and another talking about why they didn't carry guns. ....they didn't have guns.

[–]Mercutioo 4 points5 points ago

Moon man, typical redditor, just about equally sheltered

[–]Jabberminor 7 points8 points ago

If that happened in the UK, we'd all just stop and calmly talk about it over a cup of tea.

EDIT: It was a joke about stereotypes.

[–]Sacoud 4 points5 points ago

talk

If you want to go to jail!

[–]hefnetefne -1 points0 points ago

a lotta dead people.

[–]Grimpost 108 points109 points ago

In communist Russia (Ukraine), crowd maces you!

[–]Steadyeddy25 96 points97 points ago

there it is

[–]Grimpost 13 points14 points ago

Yakov demands worship!

[–]sethboy67 7 points8 points ago

Yakov, quiet down, Stalin is trying to talk.

[–]Norsak 7 points8 points ago

No mace for Jakucha.

[–]Woftles 8 points9 points ago

I get that reference. Also it's Jakucha.

[–]Joe_12265 7 points8 points ago

No. With a setup this obvious you must do better.

[–]LastRedCoat 6 points7 points ago

When the pitch comes in slow and straight you're not supposed to swing?

[–]Joe_12265 9 points10 points ago

You are but you don't get applause if you line drive it to the first baseman.

[–]PumpValve 2 points3 points ago

Isn't that pretty much what the headline says?

[–]punkrockerwee 2 points3 points ago

you have to say it in a Ukrainian accent, that makes all the difference

[–]MerryMortician 2 points3 points ago

UKRAINE IS JOKE TO YOU?!

[–]throwaway-b31480acf7 54 points55 points ago

Ahh, oh my god this hurts! Is that what we've been doing to people?!

[–]helium_farts 88 points89 points ago

Cops know what it feels like because they have to be pepper sprayed as part of their training.

[–]wild-tangent 23 points24 points ago

American cops, perhaps. I can't say for Ukranian cops.

[–]Loki_SW 16 points17 points ago

US cops have to be hit with a taser before using one, not sure about mace.

[–]Sirspen 9 points10 points ago

Pretty sure a cop said he did in an AMA quite a while back.

[–]iliketurtl3s 10 points11 points ago

One of my friends is a mall cop and even they have to be pepper sprayed before being equipped with one. This shit isn't taken lightly anywhere.

[–]theconservativelib 3 points4 points ago

Same thing for mace. Military police get a taste of it as well.

[–]febrezey 4 points5 points ago

It's not a fun feeling at all.

[–]nazihatinchimp 4 points5 points ago

I belong in here.

[–]SpinUpAndDown 12 points13 points ago

Well that's a nice way to treat other people...

And then the next time they'll complain that they haven't been treated with respect by the police.

[–]nofelix 4 points5 points ago

unless they were literally the same people both times that'd be perfectly reasonable

[–]IWasSurprisedToo 7 points8 points ago

Don't do it. Every fiber in your being is vibrating with excitement, urging you to make the Yakov Smirnoff "Soviet Russia" joke. DO NOT DO IT, MAN. Think! You're better than that! We're better than that! Do not fucking do it!

[–]Takes_Best_Guess 2 points3 points ago

In Soviet Russia, joke makes you!

[–]Takes_Best_Guess 4 points5 points ago

I can imagine how that conversation went:

Protester #1 - "Hey, you know what would be fun?"

Protester #2 - "What's that?"

Protester #1 - "You know the guys that carry guns? Lets attack them with chemical sprays!"

Protester #2 - "That sounds like a great idea!"

Spray spray, Bang bang.

[–]mcoree 7 points8 points ago

Ah, I love reddit

If cops were macing protesters the 15 year olds would be up in flames about this. But nope. No context, just people spraying cops, so reddit doesnt care

[–]Offensive_Username2 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, as stated above, these "protestors" are neo-nazi racists. I have no idea why everyone is siding with them.

[–]Mahdii7 2 points3 points ago

... And police shoot the protesters

[–]Mayo_on_the_Rocks 1 point2 points ago

That guys got two right arms... That's pretty neat I guess.

[–]skekze 4 points5 points ago

One word, "Bearspray" and if they shoot your friends, well, we're all gonna have a bad day.

[–]Woftles 4 points5 points ago

That was, like, at least 3 words.

[–]panders2reddit 4 points5 points ago

What?

[–]SlugsOnToast 24 points25 points ago

It's like a flamethrower, but it shoots bears instead of fire. They're awesome. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

[–]Heroshade 2 points3 points ago

I agree, and it's also great for keeping pests off your lawn like spiders or salmon. It's actually legal in most states too if I recall.

[–]SociallyStandard -1 points0 points ago

One, two, three... I'm no linguist, but I'm pretty sure that's more than one word.

[–]skekze 2 points3 points ago

Sorry, I was looking thru my republican monocle. It distorts reality quite immediately.

[–]lychee-twist 4 points5 points ago

If the Ukrainian police force is anything like the US police force, they've been trained to act offensively if maced. All of my being sees this as a terrible idea. Most any police officer who was hired in the last couple of years has probably been maced at least a half dozen times with eyes and mouth wide open.

[–]TitusUMMS 2 points3 points ago

My experience with pepper spray indicates that everyone in that picture was pepper sprayed.

[–]ntv0rk 0 points1 point ago

In Soviet Russia, protestors mace you!!!

[–]Hopper_ 2 points3 points ago

Oh come on.

They are just doing their job.

[–]grimreaperx2 -5 points-4 points ago

Government should fear the people not the other way around. Good on Ukraine.

[–]IStandUpForYou 79 points80 points ago

Or nobody fear anyone? That sounds much better.

[–]grimreaperx2 21 points22 points ago

The government should fear the people in the sense they respect the people and do what the people ask of their government. Our government today does what it feels like and keeps feeding people BS with pointless arguments to keep the real issues at bay. They have divided the people and created hatred between fellow Americans. As soon as the cameras go off they laugh at the stupidity of the people.

[–]sltkr 5 points6 points ago

The government should fear the people in the sense they respect the people and do what the people ask of their government.

And the people should fear the police in the sense that they respect the law.

In the ideal situation, the police protect the good and innocent from those that would harm them. But even in that situation the monopoly on violence must lie with the state. Protesters macing the police isn't a sign of a healthy society any more than the police macing peaceful protesters (à la OWS the US).

Before you proclaim the guys with mace in this photo champions of the people, you might want to read Otterfan's explanation of the protestors' opinions.

[–]ToStateTheObvious 2 points3 points ago

Governments and people should be one and the same thing. Every person should be a part of the government in some way.

[–]filmguy100 0 points1 point ago

I beleive that is soviet russia.

[–]HardtoReadIlIllIlllI 1 point2 points ago

If I upvote this I feel like Im going to be put on a terrorist list

[–]Modus_Pwninz -1 points0 points ago

Ironically, the easiest country to pull this off in could probably be the USA.

You can buy huge cans of mace made for fighting off bear attacks in many sporting good stores, and pretty much anywhere online. They're not exactly illegal nor hard to come by.

[–]The_PiedPiper 1 point2 points ago

In soviet russia...

[–]finalbowser 0 points1 point ago

And now I now why most riot cops wear clear shields over their face.

In Soviet (Ukraine),

protesters spray YOU

[–]grand_theft_otto 0 points1 point ago

I came on here looking for Soviet Russia jokes, but I surprisingly haven't found any, which makes me very happy.

The guy has two right hands

[–]BoulderBaker 1 point2 points ago

In the US the police definitely would have shot this guy.

[–]GrooveCombo 1 point2 points ago

I don't take pleasure in seeing images such as this, nor do I take pleasure in seeing protestors maced.

[–]SummerDays 0 points1 point ago

Technically Ukraine was part of Soviet Russia. So, the joke still applies! In Soviet Russia, protestors maces you!

[–]skullbeats -1 points0 points ago

This gave me a justice boner

[–]Skwee -1 points0 points ago

It looks like the guy has two right hands

[–]maddox44 -1 points0 points ago

Are all Ukranians born with two right arms?

[–]beenhazed 1 point2 points ago

Ctrl-F "In Soviet Russia", upvote.

[–]film_geek 1 point2 points ago

Don't you mean in Soviet Russia, police don't spray you with mace, you spray mace at police?

[–]Mrrogersguns -1 points0 points ago

It looks like 2 right hands from the same guy. Unless he's holding one can very strangely. The thumbs look strange to me.

In formerly soviet russia.......

What a county!

[–]YNot1989 0 points1 point ago

Still not as badass as Buddhist monks setting themselves on fire.

[–]orangematter99 -1 points0 points ago

Is it just me or does the guy in the blue shirt have two right arms? Never mind someone already commented this

[–]ChoTai 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me that thinks this is just as bad as the police doing it?

[–]RageLife -1 points0 points ago

Realistically I doubt the guy has 2 right arms. It's probably just someone with the same color shirt and all you can see is his one arm. The only real evidence I have to support this theory is the fact that both hands are holding the mace differently, one is spraying with the index finger and the other hand is spraying with the thumb. If it was the same guy he'd probably hold the mace the same way in each hand.

And then the world complains when the police retaliate.

[–]TheMightyDuck1234 0 points1 point ago

The only thing i love more than rioting, is irony.

[–]Redkast 0 points1 point ago

I can only assume they are shouting something along the lines of "HOW DO YOU LIKE IT MOTHERFUCKER?!"

[–]brakzilla 0 points1 point ago

F the police

[–]MadMojo 0 points1 point ago

I can imagine some kids doing that in America, thinking they have rights. Until the police shoot them, it would be legal. It has been done before...
