It pisses me off the way Reddit works. There was a good write up on the inner workings of how threads get popularity etc, though it was a bit above my head.

I've never made a thread that's had more than a handful of replies, and it could be a genuinely interesting topic. Yet on the front page, you get CRAP with 1500+ upvotes. Oh, sweet, a screen cap of twitter/facebook? Fuck off.

I'm going to go back to just lurking and making the occasional post and not create threads at all from now on.

Major subs are hard to break into unless you repost/repackage content that has already shown to be successful. /r/funny is especially bad since noob upvoters click the orange arrow for any kind of "I suck at Reddit" gifspam. I think it's a combination of not having seen a particular gif enough for it to be old, empathy because they suck at Reddit as well, and general hurr hurr hurr funneee click. The Facebook/social media screencaps is basically upvoted because the other half of the noob lurker's internet experience is looking at Facebook. It's familiar, believable and flexible. It's also a fuck ton of unfunny bullshit on the front page.

Your best bet for better conversation or at least more comments is a sub directly related to what you want to talk about. Those kinds of subs may be a bit slower and not yield many upvotes, but they're generally more engaging.
