Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

The photo was awarded pictures of the year inte the category "ISSUE REPORTING PICTURE STORY - FREELANCE / AGENCY": http://www.poyi.org/69/13/

"TOO YOUNG TO WED: THE SECRET WORLD OF CHILD BRIDES" Every year, throughout the world, millions of young girls are forced into marriage. Child marriage is outlawed in many countries and international agreements forbid the practice yet this tradition still spans continents, language, religion and caste. This project investigated the phenomenon of child marriage in India, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Ethiopia.

"Whenever I saw him, I hid. I hated to see him," Tahani (in pink) recalls of the early days of her marriage to Majed, when she was 6 and he was 25. The young wife posed for this portrait with former classmate Ghada, also a child bride, outside their mountain home in Hajjah. Nearly half of all women in Yemen were married as children.

If this is as widespread as the article claims, then it's a cultural normality, not just a pedophile who has a problem. Here is a video with more details. Watching this, I was struck by how lucky I am to have grown up in a civilized country. I can't imagine being married at 6. What the actual fuck.

If you are referring to my PDF link, it's a report by the United Nations. I think it's very accurate.

Actually, I linked to an article through the OP's link. I didn't click on your link. Appreciate the info.

I am the original poster, at least in this post.

duh, sorry, didn't come back to look. Anyway..... I'm sure your PDF, which I didn't look at, was accurate. I think I was more in shock that that many people fucking marry off their fucking kids, because that is some fucked up shit. I had no idea there were parts of the world was it is fucking normal to get married at 6.

Yeah, it's quite disgusting.

There are plenty of states in the US you can marry a 13 year old. You don't need to go looking to exotic lands when you can marry your 14 year old cousin in Alabama right here.

Wow, I didn't know that. Is it just straight out legal, or does it require any special circumstances, like the girl being pregnant?

[–]MuForceShoelace 0 points1 point ago

law says: Under 18 applicants need certified copy of birth certificate, both parents must be present with identification, or if you have a legal guardian they must be present with a court order and identification. If one or both parents are deceased, proper evidence of such must be provided.[88]

Wow, that's nuts. At least the girls got better looking guys :)

(Am I terrible for thinking that?)
