      Not to nitpick, but he's actually a sessional lecturer, and not a professor. I only bring this up because he was at one time on track to be a professor, but then he dropped out of his PhD program to pursue his career in entertainment. He explained his disillusionment with academia once in lecture :)

        It appears to be hanging from his beard. So I think it's his creative way of demonstrating how something so easy to snap under tension, such as a human hair, can be tied together with many other hairs and become strong from their strengths combining.

        One science teacher I had in elementary school likened it to a big bully picking on a little kid. The bully will beat the little kid up easily. But if that little kid got a whole bunch of other little kids together and they came at the bully at the same time, the bully is probably going to get a beating. So this is why rope can be made of tiny little threads that can't hold you up by themselves, but when you wind them together they join strength and can hold you up now.

        it was a going-away gift, he works as a travelling performer and it was his last lecture of the semester. He's going to the PNE in vancouver for anyone out there, from the 17th to the 31st i believe.

        so no real lesson, just awesome.

          This was a couple years ago so I'm a little fuzzy on the specifics, but there was some dry ice in a bag with some water(I think) placed on a plate on the ground. He put a metal bowl over this upside down, then grabbed one of those huge grey plastic garbage bins and placed it on top upside down as well. Then, he continues to lecture about how there will be a spontaneous reaction producing gas and that we should wait for it.

          Time passes and nothing happens, he checks his watch, still nothing. The front row is shitting themselves and he's just watching and waiting. Finally, he approaches the garbage bin cautiously and about a step away there is a massive bang, like a gunshot. This garbage bin shoots straight up about 20 ft. Had he been one step closer, it would have smashed him in the face, he was completely surprised, but, like a boss, just shrugged it off and made fun of some girl in the front row who screamed.

              This guy is brilliant! I had the most engaging physics teacher, not up to this standard, but I felt compelled to sit at the front and hear every word. I never got below 80% and usually in the 90's every exam.

              Then he left. We had this boring teacher with no control over the class. Next exam I had 23%. That was the end of my physics career.

              Wow! The great Orbax! I saw him and his traveling freak show back in 08 at this little dive in Bellville Ontario. The show was great and very entertaining. His act is similar to the Jim Rose circus sideshow but better. He does this one act where he straps a live octopie to his bare chest and then has his assistant wrap his entire body in serene wrap. PETA probably isn't cool with that one but it's still entertaining none the less. I heard at the show that he was a physics professor but I didn't believe it. Guess it's true : ). I'd love to see his act again sometime.
