Simple answer is that if you want to mass produce beer which can be transported large distances, and survive a decent length of time without spoiling, be served through modern, faster and colder taps, and be more forgiving if the barrels are not handles carefully, you will sacrifice quality. All the advantages to making a bland beer outweigh the disadvantages by a huge amount if you are simply looking at ability to shift a lot of product, and make a lot of money.

I don't think that it is necessarily a lack of taste buds. Most cheap, mass produced lagers don't have a strong flavour, so they go down easy. As they are available everywhere, and are made in enormous quantities, people know that they can get their regular drink anywhere they go, and know exactly what they will be getting, rather than having to go to a pub in the same town as the brewery and possibly get a pint from a sub-par batch. Consistency, affordability and inoffensiveness go a long way with consumers as well as with distributors. There will always be people willing to support their local breweries, but for most people beer is not an important enough part of their life for them to care much beyond convenience.

I wouldn't read anymore into it, this is British culture in a nutshell.

"Does it taste ok enough that is doesn't make me wretch? Does it make me drunk? Fine, eight please."

Personally I almost exclusively drink strongbow in pubs because it's the cheapest most alcoholic cider on tap in every pub.

I don't like the way it tastes, but it does the job and whisky is usually prohibitively expensive at pubs.

This is why you go to small, divey bars. There's almost assuredly an emphasis on local breweries. And there are a metric fuckton of amazing breweries scattered across the country.

There's this fantastic bar I used to go to in Seattle that had 64 beers on tap at all times. About half of them were Belgian imports, maybe an eighth of them were Washington beers and the rest of them were a constantly rotating assortment of beers from all across the united states.

Fuck, I miss that bar. No shortage of fancy beers to be had. It was amazing.

I live in the midwest, Indiana, and there are quite a few places to get good craft beer. Two out of the three bars in my town either have at least one or two good beers on tap, plus whatever they happen to have in bottles. Local restaurant also has $2.50 craft beers on Sundays.

If you're ever in Indianapolis, check out Tomlinson's Tap Room. I think it's something like 16 taps, all from Indiana breweries.

Yep! I lived mere blocks away about two years ago. It was my spot during that time. Though I usually like smaller, dirtier bars.

Check out The Kraken (formerly The Galway Arms pub) for a great duvet metal bar experience. That was my spot before I moved to Portland.

No, that bar is not small or divey. It's pretty massive and expensive, but its still amazing. Though, as a general rule, in my experience smaller dive bars tend to get more into local microbreweries than bigger crowded bars. The place I was talking about is just a specialty bar.

The mistake that he made was pouring it into a glass before dropping the Mentos in. This releases a good deal of the carbonation, and makes the reaction less dramatic than if he had dropped it directly into the bottle. Also, if you pay close attention, you can see that he was hit by a truck.
