he got arrested for this

[–]Tm0 1 point2 points ago

It was overturned as it counts of freedom of speech.

[–]MrSamster911 0 points1 point ago

oops, i was thinking of a different incident http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3Gup2fvfSs&feature=plcp

[–]sixbluntsdeep 0 points1 point ago

Yep, I have been giving a "stern" warning before about such behavior.

[–]verugan 0 points1 point ago

happened in Houston as well

[–]Griffter4 0 points1 point ago

How is this illegal?

[–]julius_sphincter 5 points6 points ago

They can charge you with disturbing police activities. While it might not stand up in court, getting arrested, spending time fighting it, etc, really makes it not worthwhile.

I think I need someone to explain why they think speed traps are unethical. If you are speeding, and a cop is waiting to catch speeders, I do not understand how that is entrapment or anything wrong on the part of the cop.

So if we accept that speed traps are an ethical way to stop people from breaking the law, that person with the sign is allowing speeders to stop breaking the law so that the cop will not witness them breaking the law. In other words, he makes it possible for speeders to not be punished for speeding.

This is assuming he is warning of a speed trap of course.

I have no problem with cops checking speeds on highways.

But hanging out around a corner or the bottom of a hill that has a very sharp speed limit reduction (Say from 55 to 25), and they can sit there all day and catch people still slowing down who didn't see the sign right away?? That shit is PATHETIC.

[–]julius_sphincter 0 points1 point ago

It's happened to me, the cop sitting at the bottom of a steep hill, in a residential 25 zone. I got nailed for 5 over. I payed a lawyer to make it go away. Sucks, but it is what it is.

The sweet justice? He was there at the request of a few busybody, holier-than-though moms that lived in the neighborhood. I saw at least three of them get pulled over as well

[–]nitefang 0 points1 point ago

Well yea, that is wrong and I hear it is actually illegal in Canada. I was talking just a straight out speed trap with a car hiding behind a tree or something to find people going over the speed limit.

[–]Griffter4 -3 points-2 points ago

But what law was he breaking to get arrested? Speed limits are just money grabs any way.

[–]nitefang 0 points1 point ago

Not really. Things like the autobahn do not work everywhere. Speed limits actually do save lives in a lot of places. Sure on a straight track 100mph and 80mph aren't a lot different if everyone is doing the same but on a canyon road or anything with more aggressive turns in it and now going too fast is dangerous.

Also he is interfering with police business. It is illegal to hinder the police in enforcing the law.

[–]blueboybob 2 points3 points ago

Multiple ways technically, but all case I have seen go to court have sided with the defendant not the cops. Usually under free speech.

[–]HotRodLincoln 4 points5 points ago

Anything you can do can be disorderly conduct.

[–]Veothrosh 7 points8 points ago

In my area you flash your brights to alert oncomers of a speed trap

[–]Digg1 0 points1 point ago

In my area you do that to fight people

[–]Rixxer 1 point2 points ago

Why are you assholes speeding? You deserve to get caught...

[–]julius_sphincter 4 points5 points ago

Is the air thin up there, wayyy up on your high horse? You've never exceeded the speed limit? I bet you're one of those folks going 1 under in the passing lane on the highway. "I'll keep these hooligans from exceeding the speed limit! My way or no highway!"

[–]jaapz 7 points8 points ago

Actually here in holland it is completely legal to be speeding somewhat over the speed limit when you are taking someone over. And we also have a correction of about 8km/h so you can go a little over the speeding limit, legally.

But when you are going 50km/h in a place where the speed limit is 30 km/h? We can all agree when you do that you are an asshole.

[–]julius_sphincter 1 point2 points ago

That's true here too actually, I believe you can exceed the limit by something like 7 or 8mph when passing on a two lane. And you're right, asshole blasting through a residential or populated road, need to be cracked down on.

[–]jaapz 0 points1 point ago

Cool! Here, have an "I agree" high-five!

[–]Cynical_Bastard_ 3 points4 points ago

You're assuming that every speeds on accident and everyone should get a break.

[–]julius_sphincter -2 points-1 points ago

No I'm not. But where I live, the cops are in full crackdown mode, and pulling folks over for 5 over in a 70 isn't uncommon. I admit I use to go by the rule "safe if you're w/in 10% of the posted limit" but I can't/don't anymore. I'm not in enough of a hurry to get anywhere when it'll cost me a couple hundred bucks if I get caught.

But you're right, people doing 15, 20 over or more? Bust 'em

[–]Rixxer 0 points1 point ago

Cops don't pull over people going 5 over. The only people who would be grateful for this man are the people who know they're doing something wrong. Don't act like I'm shouting from atop a high horse just because you're guilty of being an extremely impatient asshole.

[–]julius_sphincter -3 points-2 points ago

Au contraire, I have been pulled over for doing 5 over. And I've been in court when people were pulled over for 3 over. Over the speed limit is over the speed limit when it comes to the law, although there is some lenience for 2 over, at least here in WA, as it's an error margin in the radar (for lasers, they're stricter).

Almost anyone driving a car and sees a speed trap, immediately at least taps their brakes. It's impulse, whether you were speeding or not. I appreciate someone flicking their headlights at me to warn of a speed trap (also illegal) because it gives me a second to check my speed and prepare, so I don't get that quick adrenaline rush when I see the cop.

[–]Rixxer 0 points1 point ago

They can pull you over for doing anything other than the exact speed limit, but they normally won't unless you're doing over +5. Either way, I stand by my statement that the only way you'd feel grateful for that man with the sign is if you're doing something you know you're not supposed to... There's no getting around that fact.

[–]julius_sphincter 0 points1 point ago

You've never looked down at your speedo, and realized, "shit, I'm speeding!"? What if you were letting your mind drift a bit, or having small talk with your passenger, when you suddenly saw this sign. You look down, and whoops! I'm doing 7 over in a 30! You wouldn't feel grateful then?

[–]Rixxer -3 points-2 points ago

Honestly, no I don't.

[–]verugan -1 points0 points ago

I live in Houston, it's a requirement to speed, unless you're asian or driving a white contractors van.

[–]Meestah_Feesh -1 points0 points ago

I always speed. Speeding doesn't necessarily equate to reckless though. And since I travel the same route frequently I know where cops might be and slow down accordingly. I'm usually 5-10 over on average.
