Writing Watchmen

[–]sydneygamer 194 points195 points ago

And the League of Extraordinary Gentleman. And V for Vendetta. And the Killing Joke.

He wrote some good shit.

EDIT: And Swamp Thing apparently. He wrote a lot of good shit.

EDIT2: And Promethea.

EDIT3: And From Hell.

EDIT4: And Neonomicon.

[–]Socrates2 64 points65 points ago

He wrote the best shit. FTFY

[–]jew_jitsu 18 points19 points ago

I don't know...

Transmetropolitan isn't one of his, but I guess he may have been the inspiration...

[–]muckraker12 18 points19 points ago

Yes. He is. Source: Wikipedia.

"Spider Jerusalem, main character of the series, gonzo journalist extraordinaire. Inspired by Hunter S. Thompson, and the spiritual cousin to Doonesbury's "Uncle Duke." His early, unshaved appearance is a direct reference to Ellis's friend and fellow comic author Alan Moore."

[–]jew_jitsu 4 points5 points ago

Beautiful.

[–]samuraimonster 2 points3 points ago

That's just good information.

[–]aliensonTeslaworms 11 points12 points ago

Also, lots of Swamp Thing - which is amazing.

[–]hgritchie 15 points16 points ago

And From Hell.

[–]Einchy 3 points4 points ago

From Hell was fucking amazing, maybe more so than Watchmen.

Expect for that one chapter where they ride around London talking about all the landmarks. Fuck that noise.

[–]lazerguidedawesome 0 points1 point ago

From Hell is his best work in my opinion. It was written as fiction, but a lot of it makes more sense that the official version. Smart bloke.

[–]theshindig 2 points3 points ago

And The Courtyard.

[–]sydneygamer 4 points5 points ago

I had a feeling he was the one who did Swamp Thing before Snyder and the Nu52, wasn't sure though.

Also, Swamp Thing is amazing.

[–]RevanFlash 6 points7 points ago

Alan Moore did Swamp Thing a long long long time ago. There have been a lot of writers who have worked on Swamp Thing since him

[–]sydneygamer 4 points5 points ago

I'm relatively new to comics (only been into them for 4 months or so) so I have the absolute bare minimum on knowledge about who wrote what and when.

[–]RevanFlash 7 points8 points ago

Don't worry, you'll pick up on stuff like that quickly because angry nerds like myself will get mad and yell at you.

[–]sydneygamer 3 points4 points ago

Good to know.

[–]boblahblah101 1 point2 points ago

Can't really go wrong with any of Moore's work.

[–]ELDRITCH_HORROR 5 points6 points ago

His run on Captain Britain was fantastic.

[–]PracticallyFloored 4 points5 points ago

PROMETHIA, guys. Promethia. Love everything by him, but that surpasses them all for me.

[–]Trancend 4 points5 points ago

Promethea is my favorite work of his.

[–]Ber0t 3 points4 points ago

don't forget the neonomicon ;))

[–]sydneygamer 0 points1 point ago

I've never read that, but if he wrote it it must be good. It also means that someone else must have tried to use it for something and it created a huge shitstorm.

[–]ThatGuyWhoPosts 2 points3 points ago

Neonomicon is a bit too much for the silver screen.

You probably don't believe me, but you'll see.

[–]Milhouse_is_a_meme 2 points3 points ago

Swamp Thing... "apparently"?

Holy fuck man, you need an education on Alan Moore's greatest fucking work ever.

[–]sydneygamer 0 points1 point ago

Well if it's anywhere near as good Snyder's current run (which I imagine it is) then I'll certainly give it a read.

[–]trolololobot 2 points3 points ago

And From Hell. The first ever graphic novel I ever read, so worth the wait.

[–]Time_and_a_half 2 points3 points ago

Top Ten

[–]WatchYourTone 4 points5 points ago

And that book that retold Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and The Wizard of OZ as a saga of pedophilia.

[–]EightandH 2 points3 points ago

Lost Girls. Which is absolutely gorgeous.

[–]bongo1138 1 point2 points ago

Great movies. ba-duh chissssh

[–]sydneygamer 2 points3 points ago

Killing Joke never got turned into movies, and V for Vendetta actually was a great movie.

[–]bongo1138 0 points1 point ago

I meant... nevermind I already screwed it up.

[–]EightandH 0 points1 point ago

No. I could take "pretty good" but I have to disagree with great. It kinda missed the entire point of the comic, y'know?

[–]Ragnnohab 1 point2 points ago

Or bitching about them getting made into movies.

[–]Rekesz 0 points1 point ago

Also the Ballad of Halo Jones, Miracleman and Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

[–]Mechanikore 0 points1 point ago

Tom Strong. Nuff said.

[–]MrSamster911 22 points23 points ago

crying over the script for watchmen

[–]kylebutts 50 points51 points ago

That joke would only be funny if the script/story-board for the Watchmen film wasn't virtually identical to the book...

[–]N-DAR 32 points33 points ago

Except for the fact Alan Moore still hated it.

[–]Insanefoo 79 points80 points ago

Alan Moore hates everything.

[–]N-DAR 10 points11 points ago

EVEN ICE CREAM?!

[–]Insanefoo 20 points21 points ago

Probably.

[–]D3FEATER 3 points4 points ago

As a statistician, I can verify this.

[–]Sweetmilk_ 0 points1 point ago

Oh my good god Alan Moore watches cartoons. Holy fuck I'm making a British animated series and Alan Moore watches cartoons!

[–]iloveweednbjs 2 points3 points ago

how could he hate it? the script was written by fucking solid snake!!!

[–]Estragon_Rosencrantz 0 points1 point ago

I doubt he even saw it, so it isn't so much that he hates that particular take on it as it is that he was just done with Hollywood from previous bad experiences. I actually think he handles it pretty gracefully, despite his reputation as an eccentric grump. He doesn't try to stop movies based on his works from being made. He just doesn't want his name on it since the quality, good or bad, is out of his control. So he gives his share to the artist who originally collaborated with him, which is cool. He's basically saying that it's not his work so he'd just rather not be associated with it. I'm sure you can find some clips out there where he bashes on movies based on his works, but it's probably just because someone tracked him down and asked him and he was just giving an honest answer. He doesn't exactly seek out the press.

[–]farfigneugan 1 point2 points ago

His hatred stems from the botched job of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He pretty much wrote off Hollywood at that point, and has stuck to it ever since.

[–]kylebutts -1 points0 points ago

Stephen King hated The Shining. What's your point?

[–]vitalogst 1 point2 points ago

Except it isn't, at all. At All. They may have gotten the visuals the same, and some of the themes, but really read some of the great words Alan wrote when Doc is on Mars, and then read what is actually said by Crudup, it's sanitized for the masses, it's so facile as to lose any real meaning, and becomes empty platitudes. If I had written anything a tenth as good as Moore's Watchmen I would be over the moon, if I had written the tripe dialogue from the film I'd quit writing.

[–]wisdumb 9 points10 points ago

The movie was frame for frame the exact as the graphic novel (save for the lack of giant squid).

[–]Terazilla 17 points18 points ago

Also all the other stuff that was missing. All the world building newspaper content, some of the stuff with the old Night Owl, all of the Black Freighter, etc.

The ending was changed in a number of ways beyond the squid. In particular, in the film Night Owl goes out into the snow after Rorschach and is witness to Manhattan's actions. In the book the Night Owl just let him go and doesn't know what became of Rorschach -- because he's too busy banging Silk Spectre in the other room.

The squid being missing itself does have one major problem, notably that instead of being an attack from an (apparent) neutral alien third party, now the whole holocaust in New York was the responsibility of the propagandized american Dr. Manhattan. When you're trying to get people to overlook their nationalism that seems like it sends a rather wrong message.

Moore being Moore, it's not hard to see how he'd object to these sorts of changes.

[–]Not_The_Zombie 2 points3 points ago

another HUGE implication of the missing squid is the fact that without the squid you don't have the secret island of biologists artists etc, and without the island you don't have the comedian seeing something out of the corner of his eye while on a flight that disturbed him, no disturbing sight out of the corner of his eye no investigation into what was going on, no investigation no finding out the terrible dark secret, I forget how they wiggled it, but other than the hippy liberal douchebag 'we need to be more energy efficient' message in a world that should already have emission neutral vehicles there were plenty of things that were different between the movie and GN.

[–]Nimbunaut 15 points16 points ago

Which makes sense, because although that ending was kick-ass for the book, it probably would have been terrible in a hollywood blockbuster.

[–]TheWildMiracle 11 points12 points ago

The giant squid is fucking awesome though. I was so looking forward to that when I went to see the movie and was horribly disappointed.

[–]lediablerouge 12 points13 points ago

If you went to the Watchmen movie for a giant squid... you need to reconsider why you go to movies.

[–]TheWildMiracle 8 points9 points ago

I love the graphic novel so I was stoked when I heard they were making it into a movie. I was curious to see what the end would look like in cgi and whatnot, but was instead shown a boring old explosion. A teleporting psychic squid is a much cooler way of destroying a city. If I wanted explosions I'd watch a Michael Bay movie.

[–]JakMon777 12 points13 points ago

I prefer the explosion, to be honest. The idea of Dr Manhattan causing the explosion and thus causing humanity to unite seems more plausible than a giant squid.

[–]c0horst 3 points4 points ago

I know its weird to call it more "plausible", but I agree.... made sense in a strange kind of way.

[–]TheWildMiracle 3 points4 points ago

Lol it's not supposed to be "plausible." The story takes place in an alternate universe. Dr Manhattan is not plausible in the least.

[–]el_loco_avs 0 points1 point ago

Seeing all those people after the squid had much now effect on me than just some crater though

[–]LouSydney 1 point2 points ago

Yeah seriously, who would ever go to a movie to see a giant monster reek havoc on a large city?

[–]amused_query_47 1 point2 points ago

I like both to be completely honest. The squid was really cool, and I agree that without it, you didn't really get to see a good enough reason for the Comedian to break down (I feel like he witnessed more messed up stuff than what the film implied pushed him over the edge). However, I think the explosion was also good. Having Dr. Manhattan as the supposed "villian" adds soemthing to the end. In a way, I think it was a good way to say, "hey, we don't need heroes anymore, even superheroes. We can deal with our own shit." It was like the nail in the coffin for the heroes when he left. If someone like him gave up, why should they keep fighting. Now, could they have done the same with the squid? I don't doubt it.

Not only that, but at least for me, the squid was really confusing when I first read The Watchmen. Why the hell did this thing show up? I had to re-read it a couple times before I got the connection. If you showed that in a theater, everyone who didn't read the graphic novel would walk out confused as fuck, unless they spent time explaining it in the movie. Also, the squid was such a minor "character" in the story, and it would have only shown up for maybe 1 minute in the film, but would still cost the team a few thousand dollars. I would like to think that Zack Snyder wanted to put it in, but got talked down by the producers and made the choice to alter the ending slightly to save time and money, and still be able to make the movie.

[–]terriblehuman 1 point2 points ago

the ending for the movie was actually pretty good.

[–]DrGDGonzo 5 points6 points ago

Actually, it was not; the change they made to Rorschach character when he confronts the guy in the cabin might seems small, but it is a huge deal and takes away from the character that Rorschach is. I could over look a lot in the movie and I still enjoyed it, but that one 30 second change made a world of difference and I really hated it.

[–]boardgamejoe 3 points4 points ago

I heard they changed that scene because of a similar scene in one of the SAW movies. I think the meat cleaver scene was probably even more brutal, and I loved the dialogue afterwards..

Tremors of impact shook my arm.

Warm blood splashed my face.

Whatever was left of Walter Kovacs died that night with that little girl.

From then on, there was only Rorschach.

See, doctor, God didn't kill that little girl.

Fate didn't butcher her and destiny didn't feed her to those dogs.

If God saw what any of us did that night, he didn't seem to mind.

From then on, I knew:

God doesn't make the world this way.

We do.

[–]boblahblah101 0 points1 point ago

That piece of dialogue gives me chills every time I read it.

[–]DrGDGonzo 0 points1 point ago

Well that is kinda the point, when he gives the guy who committed the crimes the choice to die or mutilate himself, he is actually giving him a chance at a bit of redemption. To at least stand up to what he has done and make the decision to save himself. Otherwise he is just an animal.

Eh, I thought it was a real powerful scene that they should have kept intact. I did like the dialogue after as well.

[–]architect_son 2 points3 points ago

Not even close... "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" <---what the hell...

Massive Spoiler Alert!

[–]goblinpiledriver 0 points1 point ago

I don't remember the cleaver-to-the-head part in the graphic novel. Took me by surprise in the movie.

[–]cephalopod11 3 points4 points ago

And the fact that nowhere in the graphic novel are the characters actually called the Watchmen.

[–]valetodo 0 points1 point ago

It was exactly the same except for the part where it wasn't.

[–]SwellFellow 1 point2 points ago

Also all the bits of prose and the whole comic book parallel arc.

[–]Einchy 0 points1 point ago

Couple of weeks ago the thought popped in my head that if the endings were switched that I would like the movie's ending more. But having read the novel than watched the movie, I'll never really know.

[–]MrSamster911 0 points1 point ago

coughthe fucking endingcough

[–]iTimmeh 1 point2 points ago

Actually, the first screen play for the movie was pretty true to the comic. The studio said no fucking way they'd make it because it was so batshit insane.

[–]unicornon 1 point2 points ago

woah, I didn't realize he wrote Watchmen too.

neat.

[–]PracticallyFloored -1 points0 points ago

Came here to make this exact comment.

[–]shatonamime 1 point2 points ago

also Watchmen Babies in V for Vacation

[–]d_bo 0 points1 point ago

But then being a general asshole.

[–]gedDOh 0 points1 point ago

No love for Miracleman?

[–]livinglogic 116 points117 points ago

That's fucking Alan Moore, this man is a legend.

[–]HORSEtheGAME 22 points23 points ago

As well as a Writer/Wizard/Mall Santa/Rasputin Impersonator.

[–]RevanFlash 164 points165 points ago

It's getting extremely old seeing Alan Moore's picture posted by some moron who has no idea who he is.

[–]erryday_IAm_rustling 24 points25 points ago

The upvoters are more to blame than the reposter.

[–]The_Blackening 5 points6 points ago

One cannot survive without the other.

[–]leorising 2 points3 points ago

The man is a genius. I have been on Reddit for almost a year and I've downvoted this pic at least a dozen times.

[–]0VERT1ME 48 points49 points ago

I wish he was at my school on career day: BECAUSE IT IS FUCKING ALAN MOORE.

I was gonna say; brits, saying mall ?? ಠ_ಠ

[–]SirKibble 8 points9 points ago

We use it, but it usually refers to a single row/arcade of shops rather than a whole shopping centre. Or, to refer to THE Mall.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]bobasp1 1 point2 points ago

That's true, the arcade santa sounds cooler. As a kid my first time to an arcade out of the US was a disappointment. D:

For those who aren't aware, arcade typically means an entirely different thing in and out of the US.

[–]ReactsWithWords 5 points6 points ago

Oh, sure, Alan Moore can retcon all he wants, but if anyone retcons him...

[–]Crimyote 1 point2 points ago

I would have believed wizard was on there too. If only for the fact that he claims to be one.

[–]SoulLessGinger992 28 points29 points ago

I don't think he'd like you very much. He's a notorious hermit. I think he only came out one other time to tell the people who wanted to make Watchmen into a movie not to. He was right, I think.

[–]rumckle 11 points12 points ago

He also came out to say that the V for Vendetta movie was shit.

[–]Salvius 16 points17 points ago

I'm not sure he ever specifically said the V for Vendetta movie was shit. As I remember it, the sequence of relevant events went something like:

  1. The Return of Swamp Thing movie shits all over the Alec/Abby romance Moore wrote in the comics.
  2. From Hell movie fucks up one of Moore's many masterpieces.
  3. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie sucks extraordinary balls.
  4. Constantine movie casts Keanu Reeves in the title role (nuff said).
  5. Producers of V for Vendetta say in a press conference that Alan Moore loves the film, despite the fact that Moore hasn't actually seen it.

At this point, Moore announces, angrily, that he never said any such thing, and asks to be completely disassociated from the film. I got the feeling he was primarily angry about the endorsement he didn't actually give; but really, at that point, can you blame him for just expecting that the film would be an abomination?

[–]rumckle 13 points14 points ago

Hmm, perhaps he didn't actually say it was shit, but he was upset with it because they made the film about America's problems, not Britain's (despite it being set in Britain), and he also disliked them trying to make it seem more British.

EDIT

Alan gave some details about bits of the V For Vendetta shooting script he'd seen. "It was imbecilic; it had plot holes you couldn't have got away with in Whizzer And Chips in the nineteen sixties. Plot holes no one had noticed."

What Moore found most laughable however were the details. "They don't know what British people have for breakfast, they couldn't be bothered. 'Eggy in a basket' apparently. Now the US have 'eggs in a basket,' whish is fried bread with a fried egg in a hole in the middle. I guess they thought we must eat that as well, and thought 'eggy in a basket' was a quaint and Olde Worlde version. And they decided that the British postal service is called Fedco. They'll have thought something like, 'well, what's a British version of FedEx... how about FedCo? A friend of mine had to point out to them that the Fed, in FedEx comes from 'Federal Express.' America is a federal republic, Britain is not."

[–]MrSamster911 3 points4 points ago

i fucking loved v for vendetta actually,

[–]SoulLessGinger992 0 points1 point ago

I second this, I actually liked is a hell of a lot as well.

[–]MadHatter69 2 points3 points ago

wat

[–]MrSamster911 0 points1 point ago

that broadcast scene is so fucking cool, though hugo weaving is a little fat at times

[–]brienzee 1 point2 points ago

I liked the movie, then I read the comic.

[–]Gyaruson 9 points10 points ago

I really enjoyed Watchmen as a film - well, the directors cut. And that's from someone who loved the graphic novel. I think that they made it as good as they possibly could given the time contraint, but I also think it would've been better as a six-part miniseries or something.

[–]Hosfac 3 points4 points ago

The directors cut was good, but the theatrical version was a steaming pile of shit.

[–]SoulLessGinger992 2 points3 points ago

Ah, I never saw the directors cut. I was so disappointed when I saw it in the theater, I never went back to look again. I was actually kind of excited when I heard about the casting and that Zack Snyder was directing. He did a good job with 300 so I had hope. But I think ultimately, Watchmen was just too much. I will still say though, I absolutely loved the guy that played Rorschach. I thought he did a great job.

[–]kylebutts 2 points3 points ago

The directors cut had ~30 minutes more to it, which was mostly comprised of the "Black Freighter" sidestory...

[–]Insanefoo 4 points5 points ago

Actually the Black Freighter isn't in the Director's Cut. There are three versions:

Theatrical Cut - the one seen in theaters

Director's Cut - Theatrical Cut + Deleted Scenes

Ultimate Cut - Director's Cut + Black Freighter

[–]kylebutts 0 points1 point ago

My mistake, thanks for correcting me.

[–]NightHawk929 0 points1 point ago

I really loved reading watchmen but the movie was a real let down. I did, however, like V for Vendetta.

[–]ElPotatoDiablo -4 points-3 points ago

Turns out not. The movie version of Watchmen was fantastic, delivered the story and ideas of the graphic novel, and had a way better ending. There is no way that anyone can say the holographic pussy faced alien invasion from the end of the graphic novel is better than faking Dr. Manhattan attacking mankind. It may be hip and cool to say the movie sucked, but it's just not accurate.

Sure, Malin Akerman delivered a flat performance (no pun intended), but that was always the weakest character in Watchmen to begin with, and it was more than made up by the exceptionally good job of the rest of the cast. In particular, Jackie Earle Haley nailed Rorschach and Jeffery Dean Morgan elevated The Comedian's character beyond what was presented in the graphic novel.

Most of the time a direct adaptation sucks, but this is one of the rare times where it absolutely succeeds. And let us not forget that Alan Moore, while incredibly gifted a writer, is also batshit insane. So not everything he says is right.

[–]DanielDoh 15 points16 points ago

Oops, you confused opinion with fact.

[–]lurked2long 2 points3 points ago

Honestly, it just felt flat to me. I didn't get drawn into the characters. Nothing really felt like it developed correctly to me. I loved the novel, but the movie just didn't have the same pull. There were some great lines, good deliver from Jackie Earle Haley, but aside from that lots of the story just felt gimmicky to me. There wasn't as much of a focus on the early Watchmen, and the story just seemed to float along leading into a train-wreck of a happy ending.

[–]War_and_Oates 3 points4 points ago

The movie had great visuals but absolutely nothing below the surface. There was just no subtext- Watchmen is all subtext. It was just like a really elaborate cosplay re-enactment of the images from the books without any emotional depth.

[–]Fuego_Fiero 0 points1 point ago

EXACTLY. The book is so subtle in it's message, and just when you think you've a handle on it, you notice something you didn't before. The movie felt like the characters of 300 set in the world of Watchmen. Zach Snyder was good enough for 300, but not nearly good enough for Moore's caliber of talent. I really wonder what sort of film we would've gotten if someone like Christopher Nolan or Paul Thomas Anderson had taken a crack at it.

And for the record, I really liked the Wachowski's version of V (for Vendetta). I felt like they updated and adapted it very well.

[–]SoulLessGinger992 0 points1 point ago

I actually never said that the movie sucked, I just said I agreed with him that I didn't think it should be made into a movie. The best part of it for me was the actors. Notice in my later comment, I mentioned how much I liked Rorschach's actor. Jeffery Dean Morgan was also fantastic. I've always found that when people try to make a movie out of a story that is so damn complex, too much is often left out. I didn't hate it really, I just didn't think it did the comic justice. I think it would have been much better represented as multiple movies or a miniseries or something. I mildly enjoyed watching it, but I just didn't feel like it did the depth of the comic justice.

And Moore is definitely crazy. All you have to do to be sure is read Watchmen.

[–]unbearablerightness -1 points0 points ago

The ending made absolutely no sense in relation to the rest of the movie, I find it genuinely baffling anyone can prefer it to the book. The whole idea of solving the problem with a paradigm shift, foreshadowed with Alexander and the Gordium knot, is completely lost and you're left with a standard crappy Hollywood superhero induced CGI explosion.

And Moore is on record as admitting to playing up his eccentricity to save having to spend time talking to the credulous so your final comment isn't covering you in glory.

[–]7Year1tch 1 point2 points ago

The guy is the Richard Stalman of comic books.

[–]Pierre_bleue 1 point2 points ago

Swamp Thing went on to being my favorite Comic/Graphic Novel series of all time. ever.

[–]bbandolier 1 point2 points ago

The Anatomy Lesson is everything you need to know about comic books in one issue.

[–]KING_UDYR 2 points3 points ago

Clearly OP must be 12.

[–]bbandolier 4 points5 points ago

Saving Swamp Thing from cancellation, thereby setting the stage for The Sandman and Hellblazer, and by extension Vertigo comics.

You think you can just take Alan Moore as a mentor? Were you even born in a lake of fire? Have you even sacrificed your first born yet? Did you even begin just PLANNING your climb to the top of Mount Everest so you can do the ancient dance of immortals?

You are a fool sir, you're nothing more then a lark looking for a good time, but let me tell you this. You are doomed if you continue this fantasy. The dark one will consume you before you even know whats happening. You'll spend eternity in his belly writhing around wishing for a true death that will never come. Turn back now, and stop this foolish talk.

Go as him for the ultimate halloween costume.

[–]stussy-one 2 points3 points ago

Being a god amongst mere mortals.

[–]Zinnwaldite 2 points3 points ago

I love Alan! He lives near me and we go to the local muffin cafe from time to time.

[–]barset 0 points1 point ago

That would be fantastic. I haven't read all his works, but the shit I have is brilliant.

[–]Sweetmilk_ 1 point2 points ago

We? I'm gonna need more here

[–]ElPotatoDiablo 4 points5 points ago

Being batshit insane and writing some of the greatest graphic novels ever.

[–]Kaziticus 7 points8 points ago

Hiding in a cabin in... Maine, I think? Hating you and all the rest of humanity.

[–]Sweetmilk_ 2 points3 points ago

What? He lives in Northampton. I thought everyone knew that, he's tied to the place like Harvey Pekar was tied to Cleveland.

[–]primecutpuddingcup 2 points3 points ago

I want to go to the next New York Comic Con as Alan Moore.

[–]chimchim64 2 points3 points ago

I'm sure he'll never tell where he was on career day.

[–]ARYAWILLKILLYOU 2 points3 points ago

He was hanging out in his magic cave (no shit, he has a magic cave on his property in Northampton).

[–]inmatarian 2 points3 points ago

Rasputin Impersonator.

I think there's a point at which you're no longer impersonating it, you're living it.

[–]LUSTYHAPPYCRACK 1 point2 points ago

i met this guy at an expo in northamptonshire. really cool guy

[–]Geeez_Louise 0 points1 point ago

Wicksteed park baby! First convention he's done in years. He might keep himself to himself, but I know a few people who've seen him out around Northampton.

[–]xxkillerxx2000 1 point2 points ago

Wow. There is a chance that I sat on this mans lap as a kid. shiver

[–]Dinocologist 1 point2 points ago

Alan Moore is an anagram for "O, more anal". Christians: 1 Athiests: 0.

[–]Fordhamconner 4 points5 points ago

Writer, Wizard, Mall Santa, and Rasputin impersonator.

Thats going on every resume I ever write from now on. My word is my bond, so the unemployment line awaits.

[–]mowens87 1 point2 points ago

He was clearly loving the Russian queen.

[–]Darkersun 1 point2 points ago

Fuck me, I can't even get ONE job...

[–]Rodrocks 1 point2 points ago

[–]aliensonTeslaworms 0 points1 point ago

His best work: "machine. Unexpectedly, I'd invented a time"

[–]amused_query_47 1 point2 points ago

Being a bad ass.

And growing his awesome beard of bad-assness.

[–]hatteshizzle 0 points1 point ago

Isn't he supposedly writing a huge new novel? Will that ever get finished?

[–]All_Hail_Figgleforth 0 points1 point ago

Read comics much?

[–]TheAtron 0 points1 point ago

I've always said we need more Rasputin impersonators.

[–]tee_dogg 1 point2 points ago

He's a don!

[–]Puddlefish 0 points1 point ago

His hair makes me think of cotton candy for some reason. Man its been forever since I had some cotton candy.

[–]Pr1vateD0nut 0 points1 point ago

I thought about going to college for Rasputin impersonation, but I ultimately decided that clown school was the better option.

[–]TheJucheisLoose 0 points1 point ago

One of the greatest living writers of fiction. But yeah, looking the way he does, he basically deserves to be ridiculed. Sorry, Alan.

[–]some1inmydictionary 1 point2 points ago

Umm... what about his under-celebrated masterworks, Miracleman and Halo Jones? Go read those, you guys who like the other stuff. And Swamp Thing too, if you haven't.

[–]Rephlex -1 points0 points ago

A beard worthy of song and tale!

[–]JudgeOfBeards -1 points0 points ago

[–]DannyDarko84 0 points1 point ago

I've never read V, liked the movie though. I LOVE Watchmen, awesome book.

[–]anthonybsd -1 points0 points ago

I would call you a nincompoop, but since that term doesn't feature prominently in Justin Bieber lyrics you probably wouldn't understand what I meant and I will have wasted both of ours time.

[–]EvOllj 0 points1 point ago

phew. if hes a famous writer he likely knows to tell fiction apart from reality. Was concerned for a while if they let people be mall santas that also believe to be wizzards.

[–]Browntown8P 0 points1 point ago

Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepost of a repost

[–]MaxFuturespace 0 points1 point ago

I wrote my senior paper on Alan Moore. I thought I was so cool. And I was, it turns out.

[–]ExLegeLibertas 0 points1 point ago

Alan Moore never stops looking hilarious. Every photo of him looks in some way disheveled or disconnected from reality or like he just tumbled down off of a mountain. He's awesome.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

[–]DannyDarko84 0 points1 point ago

I Fucking love Watchmen, one of my favourite books.

[–]josephanthony 1 point2 points ago

He wasn't early, nor was he late. He arrived in your life precisely when he meant to.

[–]ronton 1 point2 points ago

How has every person in the world not seem this picture before? I've seen it more than I've seen pictures of myself

[–]Nicombobula 1 point2 points ago

That's quite the resume he's got there.

[–]glowtop 0 points1 point ago

He wrote a little story called 'The Killing Joke'. It is about a couple of guys and their wacky adventures. You may have heard of them, Batman and Joker? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_The_Killing_Joke

[–]DrossGnostic 0 points1 point ago
