It seems like there's liquid in there.

He shouldve put the balloon horizontally when he lit it on fire.

Letting the flame get too close to the source. This would work better if he had some sort of a nozzle at the end that could handle heat.

Seemed like a flammable gas that was leaking out, causing a flamethrower type effect (even though flamethrowers actually use liquid). The pressure decreased, so the flame caught up with the rest of the balloon. Boom.
